Notes: John "Tarzan" Austin was the full-time driver starting as early as mid-summer 1973 and all during 1974. Austin drove the Hot Tuna during 1973 using competition number #714, but switched to competition number #214 by the 1974 Gatornationals. I believe he also moved from California to Florida during this period, thus necessitating the change in division numbers. John's first NHRA national event was the Summernationals, where he was the fifth alternate (times unknown, but the bump spot was 6.324). He was the 29th qualifier at Indy at 6.289/232.55 and lost to Dave Settles in round one, 6.271/213.27 to 6.381/226.13. At the NHRA Supernationals, John was the fourth alternate at 6.258/207.37. Notes: John was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.129/227.84 to qualify #12. In the first round, he lost to eventual winner Gary Beck, 5.960/239.36 to 7.73/100.00. The next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, was not kind to Austin and his crew. A blower exploded during qualifying, but they made the show, qualifying #5 at 6.300/236.22. Then, in the first round, against Jim Murphy, John had a clutch go, which saw pieces blow out of a tire. The tire then ripped the wing off the car. John got the car stopped and was OK, but the car needed work. On March 31, the team was at Warner Robins for the NHRA Division 2 Opener. Austin's 6.42/221.20 beat Bogie Kell in the first round, but in the semifinals, his 6.36/231 lost to Don Powell's Chevy-powered car at 6.30/225. The next Division 2 race was at Suffolk in April. Again, Austin lasted until the semifinals, where he shut off against Powell again. On May 12, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.95/181.81, but he lost early. At the third NHRA Division 2 race, he again made it to the semifinals before losing; this time, Paul Longenecker stopped him with a 6.47/193 to John's 6.60/182.18. The team was the third alternate at the Summernationals (times not reported) and the 11th alternate at Indy (6.36/204.54). That was the team's last NHRA national event.
