Notes: Runner up at inaugural Ennis All-Stars race. Set 6.195 national record at 87 Chief Auto Parts Nats at Ennis (I don't understand why the 6.173 wasn't saved as the National Record - the 6.195 would have backed it up within one percent). Also ran 222.80 at 87 Gators. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Winter 87/88, Volume 2, Number 9. | Pat started his season at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 7 Opener in January. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.63/213.77. This set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Mike Grieco. Austin stepped up to a 6.38/216.86 to beat Mike's 6.40/215. Vern Moats had problems in the semifinals and shut off, while Pat advanced to the final with a 6.44/216.86. The new season started great with a final-round victory over Brad Anderson. Pat's 6.43/215.82 beat Brad's 6.57/182. He almost did it again at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There he qualified #3 with a 6.31/218.18. A first-round 6.34/219.88 took out Rick Henkelman, and in round two, another 6.34 at 220.31 beat Lou Gasparelli's 6.43/218. In the semifinals, Grieco's 6.64/215 lost to Austin's 6.33/220.21. So for the second straight event, Pat was in the final. This time his opponent was Chuck Phelps. Unfortunately, Pat broke a rod and slowed to 8.68/96.57, losing to Chuck's 6.53/214. Set 4.893 National Record and low qualifier at 92 Winternationals. | The season didn't start so well for Pat. He was at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in Jan, and on his very first pass of the new year, the car went into a wheelstand and landed hard. It sheared the left A-Arm, and the team spent all day Saturday repairing it. On Sunday, Austin came back out and ran 5.15 and 5.03/279.67. Pat qualified #1 at the Winternats with a 4.89/291.54. He ran a 4.90/291.07 in the first round, over a broken Bruce Walker and a second-round 4.92/289.48 beat Bobby Baldwin before he lost to Jim Head in the semis. At the next event, the Arizona Nationals, he continued to qualify well with a 4.96/291.35 (Top Speed) qualifying #2. In the first round, he beat Kenny Bernstein with a 4.99/287.90 and a 5.08/286.07 took care of Head in the second round. In the semifinal, Pat left first running a 5.07/287.44 that beat Mike Brotherton's quicker 5.04/281. In the final, he met Doug Herbert and won with a 5.06/286.25. At the NHRA Supernationals, he qualified #10 with a 4.96/295.27.

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Fifth member of the Slick 50 300 mph Club on April 23/1993, with a 300.80 in Commerce, Ga. Also 296.54 from the same race. | Austin was the second alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.07/286.80. He did much better at the NHRA Motorcraft Arizona Nationals where his 4.97/293.54 qualified #13. Pat improved to 4.90/288.46 in the first round, to beat Mike Dunn and an even better 4.89/294.88 in round two beat Doug Herbert's 5.01/284. He moved into the final on the strength of a 5.19/260.41 that stopped Jim Head who had his 'chute fall out at 5.27/213. Pat faced Eddie Hill in the final, and he gave him a good race, but his 4.93/288.46 fell just a little short of Eddie's 4.92/290. Austin continued to run well at the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. A 4.92/299.80 qualified #13, but a consistent 5.93/295.17 lost to Herbert's 4.85/298 in round one. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals the team had nothing, but problems and his 5.96/150.02 best failed to qualify.
