Notes: In August, Harris made his Pro Stock debut at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. His 7.46/186.02 (tenth alternate) failed to qualify. At Indy, he tried hard to qualify for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, but he was the nineteenth alternate with a 7.30/189.15 best. He then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where he failed to make the show with a 7.32/187. He got much closer at Topeka for the NHRA Heartland Nationals. He was the fourth alternate there at 7.28/190.31. He made his first show at the NHRA Chief Nationals held at the Texas Motorplex. A 7.18/191.91 qualified on the "bump." But it was pretty impressive as guys like Rickie Smith, Frank Iaconio, Tony Christian, George Marnell, etc., were all outside looking in. Unfortunately, Harris got out of shape in the first round against low qualifier Warren Johnson and shut off. He ended his season by qualifying on the "bump" again at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals. A 7.165/191.81 got the spot. Once again, he faced low qualifier WJ in the first round, and he lost again. But this time, he made a run, and his 7.183/192.30 fell to WJ's 7.08/196. These were Chuck's best times of the year. Photo from the 1994 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. |

Notes: Rick Howard (qualifying) photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Columbus winner Chuck Harris qualified 12th at 7.09/195.18 for the Big Go. Got so loose in round one, against Kurt Johnson, that he almost hit the wall. (Jim Yates team car. Confirmed 7.003 at Gainesville '96. Where was the 6.952 run?) |

Notes: Coming off some successful years in gassers with multiple wins and records in BB/GS, this was Holt's first Alabamian funny car. Holt, who passed away in October 2007, recounted in an online post that this Logghe-chassis car was built in 1970 and burned at Gainesville, Fla., later that year. - RT |

Notes: Won Division 2 in 1972. Ran a 6.16 at Lions in 2/72 and was the quickest in the sport at the time, beating Don Garlits' 6.21. Of course, the Top Fuel cars hit the fives by the end of the year. Number one qualifier at Indy at 6.138/229.00. This was Jack McKay's new rear-engine car, not Clayton's Moon Burst front-engine dragster. Also ran 6.13 in the first round of the 1972 Supernationals. Clayton ran 6.11 and 6.25 at Suffolk 4/72 and 6.15 at Lions 7/72. Low qualifier at Lions Grand Premiere at 6.15 and Summernationals at 6.20. The 6.25 was a National Record but was retired on 5/01/72 due to a rule change. Ran 6.130 at Ontario Supernationals 72, 6.62 at Pomona, 6.21 at Gainesville, 6.55 at Columbus, 6.20 at Englishtown, 6.13 at Indy, 6.13 at Ontario. Won Phenix City WCS race 6.58/209.30. Harris was runner-up at the NHRA Amarillo World Finals with a 6.215. |

Notes: You had to wonder what happened to Clayton Harris in '73. He had been on top of the world in '72, with many saying that he was the next Don Garlits of the sport. He set records everywhere during the '72 season, but that all changed in '73. The performance just wasn't there as it had been the year before. Yet despite that, he won his only NHRA title at the Summernationals at a race he didn't even qualify for, and he won the NHRA Division 2 title. Harris' '73 season started unspectacularly at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified for the show, but he lost early. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #19 in the 32-car field with a 7.13/218.44. Traction was horrible, and low qualifier was in at 6.75. Clayton did well in eliminations, however. He won the first round over Danny Ongais, 6.772/221.13 to 7.002/225.56. He then took it easy at 10.15/73 when Ray Stutz lost fire in round two. In round three, he ran quicker than his opponent but lost to a fast-leaving Jack Martin, 6.876/223.32, to Clayton's 6.794/220.58. The next big event was the Bakersfield March Meet. It was another 32-car show, and his 6.55 qualified #7. He lasted until round two, where an off-pace 6.97 lost to Jim Herbert's 6.71. Gainesville was his next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. He looked strong in qualifying, running 6.25 and 6.21. The 6.210 qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field, but he fireballed an engine in round one, while losing to Pat Dakin. In April, he was at Phenix City for the NHRA Division 2 race, where he finished runner-up to Flip Schofield in a 6.64 to 6.65 final. On April 29, he was running really well for the second Division 2 race at Suffolk. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final while winning over Schofield with a 6.02/229.34. That was probably one of his best showings of the year. The following week (May 6), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #2 with a 6.28, and in the opening round, his 6.77 beat Alan Starr's 6.90. In round two, a slower run of 6.66/211.26 won over John Hilton's 6.80/201. His run ended in the semifinals, where eventual winner Tommy Ivo's 6.33/226 beat his 6.44/227.00. Beech Bend held its third annual Memorial Day Championships, and while Harris didn't reach the final, he did reset the track record to 6.12. He faced off against Jeb Allen at a best-of-three match race at Englishtown. Unfortunately, he lost all three races. He debuted his new Peek Bros.-built car at the NHRA Springnationals. Clayton qualified #2 with a 6.289/233.16, but in round one, his ailing 7.068/168.85 lost to Dakin's 6.458/210.77. The car did much better at Bristol the following week (June 17) for the IHRA Springnationals. He ran 6.40 over Jim Hundley in round one, and a 6.33 took out Charlie Moulder in round two, and in the semifinals, he picked up to a 6.25 over Ivo. This put him in the final against Marvin Schwartz. Clayton was late in, and despite setting Low ET at 6.22 (at 231.00), he lost to Marvin's 6.30/230. He then won the Division 2 race at Blaney, where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.29 (Low ET). A first-round 6.41/198.66 beat Dale Thierer, and a 7.27/167 advanced over Don Plunkett in the semifinals. A slow 7.06/190.06 was enough to win over Don Powell's 7.76/208 Chevy effort in the final. Then came the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Not only did Harris fail to qualify, but he was also actually the second alternate for the field. When Gary Beck broke, Chuck Kurzawa was the first alternate and was asked to fill in. He was unable to, so Harris was put into the show. In the opening round, Herm Petersen fouled against him, and Harris advanced with a 9.10. In round two, Dave Settles failed to show, so a solo 10.78 advanced into the semifinals. He faced Schwartz, and Marvin had his 'chute fall out, so Harris' tire-smoking 7.30 entered the finals. His opponent was none other than Jim Bucher's strong Chevy-powered car that had been running 6.30s on the way to the final. No one gave Harris much of a chance in the final, but Bucher's Chevy broke, and Harris sputtered and popped to an 8.72/149.50 for his only NHRA victory. His best ET in eliminations had only been a 7.30! Sometimes you can't beat racer's luck. He ended the month of July by winning the Division 2 race at Miami-Hollywood, where Moulder fouled in the final and Harris' 6.25/218.44 got the win. If July had been good to him, August was not. He went to Canada and was helping Moulder attempt to get his car qualified, and broke his leg. He had already qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.35 but was unable to race. Because of his injury, Moulder was going to drive Harris's car at the PHR Championships, but the team failed to qualify with some 40 cars attempting to make the sixteen-car field. Dale Funk drove Clayton's car at the NHRA World Finals, qualifying with a 6.50 and winning a 6.29 to 6.50 contest over Dave Settles in round one. But another 6.50 fell to Gaines Markley's 6.30 in round two. | Did Clayton run 5.92/234.98 and 233.76 somewhere in 1973? We formerly listed those times, but need confirmation. | On 7/1/73, Leroy Goldstein defeated Harris in a best 2 of 3 match race at Magnolia Dragway in Gulfport, MS. R1 Harris 6.30 def Goldstein 6.55. R2 Goldstein 6.37/226.70 def Harris. R3 Goldstein 6.47/221 def Harris 6.85/205.47. - Julian Roberts |

Notes: Ran 6.26 at Rockingham, 6.31 at Columbus, 6.34 at Englishtown, 6.28 at Indy, 6.06 at Ontario. Clayton debuted this car in spring of 74. It had a 254-inch wheelbase, which was one of the longest fuelers out there at that time. It replaced his 73 Peek Bros. car, which won the 73 Summernats. Tim Simplot |

Notes: Clayton began his NHRA national event season at Columbus, qualifying #4 at 6.094/239.36 (top speed). He improved to 6.052/239.36 to beat Dale Funk's 7.313/143.34 in round one. He continued his tear in round two with a 6.062/227.27 decision over Dave Settles' respectable 6.211/231.95. Clayton fell off to a 6.353-225.00 in the semis, enough for Marvin Graham to slip by at 6.307-221.18. Clayton qualified #4 again at the Summernationals with a 6.156-231.95. However, Dale Funk returned the first-round favor with a 6.376/236.84 to 6.427/229.59 decision. At IHRA Bristol in June, Clayton beat the Edwards Bros.' 6.51/223.32 in round one with a 6.31/222.22. He improved to 6.29/221.13 in round two to beat Charlie Moulder's 6.65/181.08. Clayton smoked the tires against Don Garlits in the semis and shut off against Don's 6.18/230.76. He had a rough outing at Indy with a 6.460-184.04 #14 alternate effort. That was the team's last NHRA event of the year. Some wire reports cited Clayton's hometown at Columbus, MS, this year (82 miles southwest of Haleyville). Photo from 1974 IRP WCS D3. |

Notes: Harris didn't race at any events until March when he showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.070/209.30. He lucked out in round one; after he fouled, opponent Bob Edwards crossed the centerline and was disqualified. Harris's 7.056/148.27 won, but he had some engine damage and could not return to race Jim Bucher in round two. He then went to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. The race was supposed to be run in February, but it was rained out and rescheduled until March. Due to that, Clayton's first-round opponent, Don Garlits, could not show for the rain date, and Harris got to make an opening round solo. He advanced with a 6.18/218.97. In the semifinals, his off-pace 6.60 lost to Pat Dakin's 6.23. On March 28, he won the NHRA Division 2 opener at Warner Robins. Harris really cleaned up there. He qualified #1, got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 6.36/209.77. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 6.02/234.37 that beat Bucher's 6.34. And in the final, he also set Top Speed with his 6.23/234.98 victory over Dale Wilch's 6.80/188. The following week (April 4), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He made it into the final only to lose to Dakin. He reached another final the following week (April 11) at DeSoto's NHRA Division 2 race. Only five cars showed, and his 6.41/224.43 qualified #1. He got the first-round single and ran 6.37/232.55 to advance. Harris really improved to the semifinals, beating Bucher's Chevy-powered car with a 6.06/239.29 (Low ET and Top Speed). Unfortunately, the pass took its toll on the engine, and Clayton could not return for the final against Bob Edwards. Breakage also did him in at a race in Baton Rouge. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.37/206.47. But he broke against low qualifier Richard Tharp in the first round. He made a trip to Englishtown to compete at the NHRA Division 1 opener on May 9. His 6.43 qualified #3, and he got a solo in round one and ran 7.45 to advance. He and Hank Endres had a very close race in the semifinals that saw both run 6.16 (Harris at 226.70), but the win light came on in Clayton's lane. In the final, he ran 7.01/209.30, and that was enough for the victory as his competition, Larry Bucher, crossed the centerline and shut off. Shortly after that, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #3 at 6.15. In round one, his 6.43/221.13 beat Ted Wolf's 6.57/192 in the "Jade Grenade." His opponent, Jim Kowchefski, had problems in the semi-final, and Harris hurt his engine on a 7.27/171.13 pass. Clayton was unable to show for his final round race against Hank Endres. In June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.212/180.00 qualified #10. His 6.338/226.70 in round one lost to Tharp's 6.13/233. The following week (June 20), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. While he failed to reach the finals, he ran well at 6.11/229.59. Clayton qualified #5 at the NHRA Englishtown event at 6.040/226.70 but fell off the pace and lost to Hank Endres in round one, 6.26/226 to 7.258/145.39. Clayton found the fives at Indy with a #9 qualifying 5.955/241.28. He improved to his best ET of the year in round one with a 5.921/241.28 victory over Dwight Salisbury at 6.18/220. In round two, he lost to Gary Beck, 6.10/205 to 6.135/233.16. That was Clayton's last NHRA national event of the year. He won Division 2 in 1976 and finished second in the NHRA championship. |

Notes: Wore number 2 after finishing second in the NHRA championship in 1976. Photo from 1977 IHRA Summernationals Union Grove. Ran 6.125 at Indy Nationals 9/77. | Clayton didn't run nearly as many races in '77 as he had in the past. He qualified #10 at the NHRA Gatornationals and in the first round, advanced when Shirley Muldowney fouled. In round two, Tom Kaiser fouled against him and he found himself in the semifinals. Unfortunately, he broke on the line giving Pat Dakin a single into the final. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.46, but he lost in round one. He qualified #2 behind Don Garlits at the IHRA Dixie Nationals at Atlanta, but failed to reach the finals. At the second NHRA Division 2 race held at Blaney, he broke against eventual winner Don Powell in the opening round. The IHRA Springnationals at Bristol were postponed by rain until June 26. Clayton was there and qualified #3 with a 6.14. He had himself a little nap on the line in the first round, and his 6.07/233.14 lost to Marvin Schwartz' 6.14/220. A week later (July 4), he was at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field and in round one, his 6.04/214.79 beat Jack Revelle's 6.39/221. A semifinal 6.03/216.34 put the "Jim and Allison Lee" entry driven by Lee Weller on the trailer. This set up a final round meeting with low qualifier (5.94) Garlits. Both had run 6.03 in their semifinal races so it was expected to be a close race. Unfortunately, Clayton slowed to a 6.28/204 to finish runner-up to "Big Daddy's" 5.95/240. The month of July ended with Harris running at the NHRA Division 4 race at Riverside. He qualified #1 with a 6.22 and he set Low ET with a 6.19 in the first round, while beating Steve Stephens' 6.81. But in the semifinals, he was down a cylinder and his seven cylinder 6.89/158 lost to Jimmy Edwards' 6.75/222. Harris was back at Atlanta in the first week of August for the IHRA Nationals. He lasted until the semifinals where he had problems and shut off against Schwartz. Rockingham was his next stop for the IHRA US Open. Harris' 6.24 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field, but he lost to Paul Longenecker in the opening round. The US Nationals at Indy had 60 cars attempting to qualify for the 32-car show. It was surprising to see Harris qualified on the "bump" with a 6.17. He picked up to 6.12/227 in the first round, to beat Jeg Coughlin's 6.20/227, but a 6.23/218 in round two lost to Dennis Baca's 5.98/233. Baca would go on to win. A win finally came his way on September 18 at Atco for the IHRA Fallnationals. He had only qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but in round one, his opponent Mark Howick (who was in as an alternate) broke on the line. In the second round, he advanced with a 6.48 when Longenecker broke. This set up a final against Garlits who had run 5.90 in his semifinal race. Everyone expected Don to win easily, but Harris won a tire spinning dual with a 6.30/231.95 over Garlits' 6.50/219. Later in the month he was at Suffolk for a best of three match race against Weller driving the Lee's machine. In their first race a 6.35/186.33 lost to Lee's 6.25/214. But Harris came back to win the second race with a 6.54/161 when Weller lost fire on the line and in the third race, a strong 6.06/228 won him the match over Weller's 6.40/188. He also won the Dixie Finals at Blaney, stopping Powell's Chevy in the final. |

Notes: 1978 IHRA champion. Best NHRA times were 5.920 (240.64) at Columbus and 243.24 (5.991) in Indy 1978 eliminations. | Harris was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 6.10/239. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.27/227 beat Bob Struksnes' 6.44/230. But he had problems against Marvin Graham in round two and shut down. The following week (March 19), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show and his 6.43/212 qualified #2 behind Don Garlits' 6.36/229. He then set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.14/234.98 that stopped Dick LaHaie’s 6.23/226. In the semifinals, Harris' 6.24/197 advanced when Lee Weller lost fire on the line. Clayton faced Dale Thierer driving the "Jim and Allison Lee" car in the final. Harris clearly had the performance advantage and it showed in the final as Dale shut down to a 6.81/177 while Harris' 6.27/234 got him the victory. He also ran well at Rockingham in April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.16/234. A first-round 6.48/224 beat Mark Howick and he got the "odd-lot solo" in round two and ran 6.69/174 to advance. Unfortunately, a semifinal 6.85/157 lost to Weller's 6.44/229. |
