Notes: Ray showed up at Pomona on January 23 for the Jackpot Pro Circuit Fuel race. Thirty-four cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Ray ran a 7.83/196.22 to qualify #6. He failed to reach the finals. He was at Irwindale on April 2 for another sixteen-car show but fouled in the first round. The next day he was at Carlsbad for the Division 7 Opener. There he lost to Tom McEwen in the first round. On April 23, he made the field at Irwindale's sixteen-car show, and he advanced past the first round with a 7.99/191.88. In the second round, an 8.02/193.12 lost to Mike Snively's 7.55/190. One week later, Ray was back at Irwindale (April 30). A first-round 7.83/201.78 advanced to round two, where Snively again stopped him with a 7.97/181 beating Ray's 7.95/193.96. On June 4, the Wilton and Doss car was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. Ray qualified the Chevy-powered car #5. In the first round, a 7.89/191.88 lost to Steve Porter's 7.87/199. He got back into the show when Andy Clary could not make his semifinal race. Unfortunately, the Chevy failed to fire. Ray was back at Irwindale on June 18 for another eight-car show. He qualified #6 but fouled against Snively in the first round. A week later (June 25), Ayres was at Lions for an eight-car show. He lost to James Warren's 7.62/207 in the first round but managed to set Top Speed of the meet while losing with a 7.81/208.30. Ray qualified #1 while setting Low ET of the meet at Lions for an eight-car show on July 2. A 7.36/211.76 got the spot. He advanced past the first round with a 9.31 as Bob Downey fouled in the "Howard Cam Special," but in the semifinals, he shut off with problems, losing to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 7.59/201. |

Notes: Ray Ayres took over the Atlas car for the rest of 1967, beginning in August at the OCIR Grand Opener. He qualified for the 8-car field with 7.27, getting eliminated by low qualifier Tom McEwen in the first round. Tied for Top Speed at the Indy with a non-qualifying 223.76 mph. Best ET for the car was a 6.95 at OCIR in October. Ayres stayed with the car through early 1968 until Steve Carbone returned after a stint driving for Pete Robinson. |

Notes: Ray Ayres' original car owner was Bill Hermes. Hermes tried to drive the car himself after Ayres left, but to no avail. He put John Martin from the Savage into the seat for the rest of the year. | On July 8, Ray won over a sixteen-car field at Irwindale. He beat the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in the first round, with a 7.34/172.02. An improving 7.29/210.76 beat Mike Sorokin's 7.40/210 in round two and a semifinal 7.33 took out Dave Beebe's identical 7.33. This set up a final round meeting with Jim Dunn. Ayers got the victory with a final round 7.34/207.36. |

Notes: On April 13, Ray drove Crossley's car to a runner-up finish at an eight-car show at Lions. He qualified #7 with a 7.12 and in the first round, he beat Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian" with a 7.32/218.44. In the semifinal, an off pace 7.99/208.80 lost to Larry Dixon's 7.55 in the "Fireside Inn" roadster, but he was reinstated when Larry hurt some parts and was unable to make the final. Ray lost the final with a 7.59/214.28 that was second best to Don Cook's 7.55/220.58. He was back at Lions on May 11 for another eight-car show. Ray qualified #4 with a 7.31/189.86, but a first-round 7.50/218.44 lost to Jimmy Boyd's 7.55/204. A week later (May 18), he was at Las Vegas for the Stardust Raceway Top Fuel race. He fouled away a 7.33 in the first round, that lost to Tommy Larkin, but Larkin was unable to run in the semifinals so Ayers was reinstated. Unfortunately, a 7.62/204.54 lost again, this time to Dave Beebe's 7.39/196. On May 25, Lions held another eight-car show and Ray qualified #2 with a 7.29/217.38. He beat Jack Jones gas-burner in the first round, with a 7.18/193.54, but a semifinal 7.64/218.44 lost to Dick Huerta's slower 7.94/196 in the "Instant Trouble." |

Notes: Lou had a bit of trouble in April at Miami-Hollywood's Big Go South race. He had one of the ten Funny Cars attempting to qualify for the eight-car show. He failed to qualify the car but returned later to make a check-out pass. Unfortunately, the accelerator jammed wide open while backing up from his burnout. The car bounced off the retaining wall before hitting some cars in the staging lanes. The only one hurt in the mishap was Dempsey Hardy, who was taken to the hospital and released shortly after. Lou's pocketbook probably took a hurting, too. After getting the car repaired, he reportedly won 65% of his match races, beating some of the better-known drivers/teams. Included in that list were the "Ramchargers," the "Mr. Norm" car, Tom Hoover, Fred Goeske, and Mike Burkhart, among others. The best ET and speed during '72 was a 6.81/210 at New York National on August 20. - Car actually debuted in 1971, as Azar ran it (and DNQ’d) at the NHRA Supernationals in 11/71. - JM |
