Notes: Head was the 5th alternate at Pomona with a 5.983 at 239.39. He ran 6.008/212.76 at NHRA Gainesville, qualifying #15. He lost in round one, to Danny Danell, 6.20/239 to 6.36/164. The following week (March 20), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Jim Barnard. Head was the third alternate at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.993/236.84. He qualified #15 at Columbus with a 6.046/237.46 but slowed to a 9.16 against Gene Snow in Round one. He then went to Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Head qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Connie Kalitta in the opening round of eliminations. Jim qualified #15 at Englishtown as well, and his 6.064/234.37 got into this show. Jim best alternate Bob Simmons in round one, with a 5.866/236.22 when Simmons lost fire. He lost a close decision to Connie Kalitta in round two, 5.97/220 to 6.019/234.37. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified on the "bump" with a 5.96. He improved to 5.87/236.22 in the first round, but it wasn't good enough to beat Dick LaHaie's 5.81/233. Head was the fifth alternate at Indy with a 5.957/233.16. That was Jim's last NHRA national event for the year. Photo from 1983 Springnationals, Columbus, Ohio.

Notes: Jim qualified #13 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.23. He lost in the first round. He was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he again qualified #13 with a 6.01/246.57. He lost to Tom McEwen in the first round. Early in May, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Head's 6.02/241 qualified #7. In the opening round, he defeated Eric Caskey's BB/FC with a 6.03/250.00. Raymond Beadle smoked the tires in the "Blue Max" in round two, and Jim advanced with a 6.09/250.69. In the semifinal, his off-pace,6.30/240, fell to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 5.73/252. As mentioned, he did well at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3, and in round one, his 6.02/246 beat Frank Hawley's 6.01/241 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He then beat Al Segrini in the second round with a 5.99/245. In the semifinals, a 6.08/245 beat a tire-smoking Mark Oswald. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and despite a good 6.01/245.90 run, he lost to Meyer's better 5.92/249. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Twenty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen car field, and his 5.98/243 qualified #15. Unfortunately, his 6.07/240.00 in the first round lost to Denny Savage's 5.97/248. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan's US 131, Jim ran a 5.77 track record to qualify first in the sixteen-car show. He stayed strong with a first-round 5.78 over Tom Hoover. In round two, a 6.06 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.13. His 6.10 in the semifinal fell to eventual winner Hawley's." He went from top qualifier to the last qualifier when he ran 6.00/247.25 to qualify #16 at the NHRA Springnationals. A first-round 6.07/243.90 lost to Beadle's 5.97/238. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Nationals on June 24, and Jim qualified #4 for the eight-car field with a 5.89/249.30. But in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Bruce Larson. At the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, he qualified #9 with a 5.92/250.00. He failed to reach the finals. The following weekend (July 8), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Jim was running really well here as his 5.73/257.87 (#4) in qualifying attests. In the first round, his 5.76/250 beat Bob Gottschalk's 6.09/247. He turned some heads in round two, where his 5.68/260.86 beat Tom McEwen's 5.81/235. In the semifinal, he slowed to 5.80/257.87, which lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.81/255. After such a great performance, Englishtown was not so great. His 5.91/250.69 qualified #14 for the NHRA Summernationals, and he lost to Hawley in the first round. Jim surprised everyone by winning the prestigious US Nationals over Kenny Bernstein. His best NHRA times were 5.844 at Brainerd and 255.68 at Indy. Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. | After a great season in '84, Jim returned to the Funny Car wars in '85 hoping for more. He started the season by qualifying #12 with a 5.94/249.44 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he slowed to an off pace 6.25 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.80. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.23 and lasted until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.89/244.69 qualified #14 and in the first round, he had problems and shut off to a 14.60-56.13 that lost to Dale Pulde's 5.87/243. Jim was having a tough time getting past the first-round and it continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lost to Jody Smart in the first frame. On a good note, he was qualifying for all these shows, a hard thing to do. He almost didn't make the field at the NHRA Southern Nationals where his 6.02/248.89 qualified #15. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. He made up for those early losses at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge on May 26. There he qualified #13 with a 5.98/246.44. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, and in round two, Prudhomme broke on his burnout, advancing Jim into the semifinals. In his semifinal race, a 5.93/245 beat Ron Correnti, putting him in the final against Bernstein. Head would have rather raced for the win than take a solo trip, but Bernstein broke on the line and Jim soloed with a 5.93/248.48 for the victory. Things reverted back to "normal" at the next few races. His next event was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot of the sixteen-car show with a 5.98, but he lost to Pulde in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.95/234.13, but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The pattern continued at the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.83/251.53 and lost early. Jim went on to win NHRA Brainerd. His best NHRA times were 5.718/254.66 at the Keystone Nationals. Did Jim run 261 on the IHRA tour this year or was that from another year?

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Qualified on the bump at 2006 US Nats at 5.809. We need to confirm these best times for 2006. Ran identical 5.531 at Ennis Fall 87. Drag Racing List has 5.686/261.62 in the 86/87 issue. | Head started the '86 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 5.90/247.93. In the first round his 5.93/257.14 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86/245. Jim attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.16/205.47 failed to make the field. Atlanta held an eight-car show early in the year and Jim qualified #5 with a 6.39/188.28. Unfortunately, on his qualifying pass, the blower let go and it tore up the tinwork in the Firenza. He was unable to run and alternate Steve Hodkinson replaced him in eliminations. The car was fixed in time for Gainesville and the running of the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #11 with a 5.89/253.52. He lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he ran 5.91/250.41 to qualify #10. He beat Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round, and in round two, both he and Paul Smith smoked the tires with Jim's 6.22/248.48 getting the win. In the semifinals, Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian," fouled against him, so he motored into the final with an 8.38/108.93. In the final, he ran Ed McCulloch and although both ran 6.00 (Head at 250.13), Ed got the win. Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals was NHRA's next stop and Head was there, qualifying #8 with a 5.94/250.97. A first-round 6.07/214.18 beat Jerry Jefferson, but in round two against Billy Meyer, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline.

Notes: Jim's answer to Bernstein's Batmobile car. Jim was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he failed to qualify. He exploded a supercharger on one attempt, and his best of 5.85/243.04 was good for the second alternate. Atlanta held an eight-car show in March, run in conjunction with the NHRA Division 2 race. It was initially scheduled for the 8th, but it was postponed one week to the 15th due to rain. Jim qualified #2 in the field with a 5.85/222.22. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the first round, with a 5.94/237.46. In the semifinals, he ran an easy solo pass when Johnny West could not run after hurting his engine in the "Hawaiian." In the final, Jim was up against low qualifier Tom Hoover. Head reset the track record with a 5.66 at 234.37 to get the victory over Hoover's 6.01/228. Due to the rain delay, Jim could not race at the IHRA Winternationals as it was run the same day as the Atlanta event. So, the following week (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.76/251.81 qualified #12. A first-round 5.70/253.30 beat a tire-smoking Beadle, but in round two, he smoked the tires to 6.75/119.11 and lost to West's 5.81/248. The next stop was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was an eight-car field, and Jim's best of 5.71/254.88 failed to make the show. Head debuted his new "Batmobile" Firenza at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he ran 5.81/256.41 to qualify #10 for the show. Only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying was easy. In the first round, he had a blower explode, and he slowed to 6.10/187.03 in a loss to John Force's 6.01/253. Shortly after that, he went to Maple Grove for the Spring Funny Car Nationals. He qualified for the final by running 5.82. The other finalist was Bruce Larson, who had run 5.79. Jim got off the line first in the final, and his 5.78/222.22 held off Bruce's quicker 5.72/247 for the title. He was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 5.81 behind Kenny Bernstein's 5.67. These two would work their way to the final. Jim ran 5.91/250.00 over Scott Kalitta and 5.93/247.93 in the semifinals to advance when Mark Oswald broke in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Bernstein had the edge as he had run 5.70s to reach the final. Sure enough, Kenny reached deep into his bag of tricks in the final and came up with a 5.61/256 to win over Jim's runner-up effort of 5.89/248. The Cajun Nationals was the second NHRA national event in a row that only had sixteen fuel funnies show. A 5.93/233.28 qualified Jim #6, and in round one, his 5.95/246.23 beat Pat Walsh's 6.09/232. He improved to 5.88/225 in round two to advance when Force broke on the line. But in the semifinals, he had problems and slowed to 7.42/132.17 in a loss to West's 5.68/253. In June, Jim was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.92/244.56 and an opening-round 5.89/242.98 beat Larson. He surprised a tire-smoking Hoover in the second round with another 5.92 at 250.27 to advance into the semifinals, where he would meet Dominic Santucci. Jim ran his best ET of the weekend, a 5.84 at 246.23, to beat Santucci's 5.99/247. In the final, he faced Billy Meyer, who had not won an NHRA event since 1984. Meyer changed all that by running 5.84/251 to claim the victory over Head's troubled 7.07/132.80. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The field was one car short, but Jim still reeled off a 5.85/248.62 to qualify #6. An opening round 5.90/241.61 beat Jerry Caminito's 6.08/236 but in round two, his off-pace 6.33/156.63 fell to Ed McCulloch's 5.88/247. Back in the US for the NHRA Sunmmernationals held at Englishtown in July, he was the first alternate at 5.87/235.47 when twenty-four cars attempted to qualify. Not long after that (July 26), he was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Head qualified #12 with a 6.01/235.29, but he went out early when his 6.05/234.92 lost to Oswald's 5.90/247 in the opening round. Twenty-one cars showed to attempt to qualify at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals held in Mid-August. Jim got the #11 spot in the field with his 5.73/244.89. A tire-smoking shut-off 12.37 lost to Meyer's 5.70/259 in round one. RH

Notes: Head started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.67/252.38, and he won his opening round race against Tripp Shumake, who lost a blower and crossed the centerline. His opponent, Brad Tuttle, smoked the tires in round two, and Jim's 5.66/258.76 advanced. Mark Oswald smoked the tires in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinal, and Head ran 7.66/123.59 to go into the final. There he would face Dale Pulde. Dale had been running 5.4s, so it looked like he was in trouble. It turned out that both smoked the tires, and Pulde recovered first to a 6.02/223 to take the victory over Jim's 6.38/184.95. He was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 5.70/248.48 qualified #13, and in round one, he beat Johnny West, who was driving the "Hawaiian."Both had problems, and Jim's 7.29/138.29 beat West's 9.67/87. But his 8.78/97.91 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.06/218 in round two. He then raced at the IHRA Texas Nationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.58/236.53. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. He qualified #5 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he windowed a block while running 5.65/253.37 in defeating Darrell Amberson in the first round. After changing the engine, he smoked the tires against John Force in round two. The following week, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.59/254.95 qualified #3. Amberson broke against him in round one, and Jim advanced with a 5.98/245.23. In the semi-final, Oswald fouled, and Jim ran 5.72/248.61. In the final, he went up against low qualifier Ed McCulloch, and Head fouled. He shut down to 6.33/175.00 while Ed ran 5.68/261 for the victory. Jim showed up using a new high-gear only, AFT 5-stage clutch at Memphis. It seemed to pay off as he ran 5.55/264.00 to qualify second to John Force's similar,5.55/263. In the first round, Head's 5.68/253.02 beat West's 5.86/247. In round two, he used a 5.71/255.02 to defeat R.C.Sherman's 5.82/259. He and Oswald had a close race in the semi-final that saw Mark's 5.62/268 beat his 5.65/264.70. Still, Head was now up to fourth in NHRA points with the semi-final finish. Photo from Columbus 1988. Jim started running top fuel beginning at Indy in 1988 and continued in that class in 1989. The Memphis and Columbus times were his best of the year, but Jim was a solid qualifier in the 5.50s and 5.60s and nearly reset his bests at Seattle with a 5.565/267.06 pass.

Notes: Jim started the year by just making the field at Pomona for the Winternationals with his 5.36/261.32 qualifying #16. He had problems in the first round and lost to Gary Beck. At the second NHRA event of the season, the Supernationals, he qualified #13. He ran a first-round 5.15 in beating Eddie Hill, but he lost to Joe Amato in round two. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #11 and again made it into round two before he broke on the burnout before facing Earl Whiting. Jim was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. Rain canceled out qualifying, and the eleven cars that showed for the eight-car field were given one crack at making the show. Jim's 5.35/274.44 got him the pole. In the first round, he improved to 5.24/271.14, but his opponent, Gene Snow, also improved, and his 5.16/265 won. Atlanta and Memphis were the next two stops on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals, and the Mid-South Nationals and Head failed to qualify for both. He ran well at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where his 5.27/264.12 qualified #2 in the eight-car field. He had a close first-round race against Connie Kalitta that had both drivers run 5.33 (Head at 261.90), but Jim got the win light. Both he and Jack Ostrander smoked the tires in the semifinals, but Jim again came out on top with a 6.72/103.88, advancing him. In the final, he faced Pat Dakin, and it was another tire-smoking battle. But Jim prevailed for the victory with a 6.90/143.69 over Dakin's closing 6.98/170. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, his 5.16/271.16 qualified #12. In the opening round, his 5.23/271.49 defeated Frank Cook. Both he and Dick Lahaie smoked the hides in round two, where Head's 5.51/264.39 finished first. He got off the line late in the semifinal, where his 5.29/254.95 lost to Hank Endres' 5.31/269. He made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationls and qualified #11 with a 5.33/263.38. His 5.32/267.85 in the first round lost to Joe Amato's 5.22/275. He also lost in the first round to Eddie Hil at Englishtown after qualifying #14 with a 5.23/273.88 for the NHRA Summernationals. | At the IHRA Loctite Nationwise World Nationals, Head qualified #5 with a 5.365/260.67 & Drew #4 Qualifier Pat Dakin in Round 1. During the run the Timers failed but via the ESPN Cameras showed Dakin got the win.

Notes: Jim qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.18/261.78. His 5.29/261.78 in the first round, lost to low qualifier Gene Snow's 4.98/255. He was the first alternate at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.31/260.94. At Houston, for the NHRA Supernationals, he fouled against Dick Lahaie in the opening round after qualifying #15 with a 5.12/268.85. Head also qualified #15 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.22/266.35, but once again, he left early, as in round one, when he and his opponent, Lori Johns, smoked the tires. Johns' 6.11/214 finished first, ahead of his 6.30/255.89. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. His 5.06/271.41 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In the opening round, he improved to 5.02/276.32 to defeat Johns, but an off-pace 5.48/259.36 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.02/276 in the semifinal. He just made the top half of the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 5.06/274.97 qualified #8. He beat "the Greek" Chris Karamesines in round one, with a 5.13/270.27, but in round two, Joe Amato's 5.14/273 stopped his 5.21/265.80. Only 15 cars showed at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Head got into the field in the #12 spot. He lost to Kenny Bernstein in the opening round. Baton Rouge was also one car short for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Jim qualified #8 with a 5.20/261.78. But once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Snow. Columbus was the next race on the NHRA schedule for the Springnationals. Head qualified #10 with a 5.21/263.46. This time, Frank Bradley beat him in the opening round. The Noodle Car. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 4, Fall 1990 issue has 282.60. We believe that was a mistake and that it was the 262.61 from the World Finals. We need to review the IHRA races to validate.

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from the 1992 US Nationals. Jim started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #13 with a 5.06/273.22. He lucked out in round one, when Cory McClenathan had troubles and Head advanced with a 7.15/236.77. In the second round, Mike Brotherton broke and Jim advanced with a 23.26/63.76. He ran over eighteen seconds quicker in the semifinals when his 5.06/277.00 beat Pat Austin. In the final, he was up against Kenny Bernstein and despite running his best time of the meet, a 4.98/279.93 he lost to Kenny's 4.96/281. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.11/273.88 qualified #10. He beat McClenathan in the first round, with a 5.09/272.80. In round two his 5.14/268.25 lost to Austin's 5.08/286. Houston was NHRA's next stop for the Supernationals. Jim qualified #15 with a 5.04/279.93. He picked up to 4.99/280.46 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner Joe Amato's 4.98/287. Jim had nothing, but problems at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and he could only muster a best of 8.98/100.12 that obviously failed to qualify. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.07/280.37 qualified #13. He fell off to 5.18/272.06 in the first round, that lost to Amato's 4.94/283. Memphis was NHRA's next stop for the Mid-South Nationals. Jim qualified #10 with a 5.07/279.32, but a first-round 5.23/273.30 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.09/284. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals with a best of 5.23/274.30 that was good for second alternate. Up in Canada at the end of June, he was at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.20/279.24 qualified #11. Unfortunately, his first-round bad luck persisted and a 5.30/264.70 lost to Amato's 5.09/281. He failed to make the show at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.12/284.16 was the second alternate. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals or Sonoma for the California Nationals.
