Notes: Dave qualified #20 at the AHRA Winternationals. His 7.50/200.33 in the first round lost to Mike Snively's 7.17/214. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Things went well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He reached the final of the 32-car show by beating Bobby Hightower in the first round with a 7.03/199.55. He took out Tommy Allen in round two and a 6.98/212.76 put Gary Cochran on the trailer in round three. Both he and Steve Carbone ran 6.96 (Dave at 213.87) in the semifinals, but Babler got the win. He faced "Fireman" Jim Dunn in the final, and his 7.00/214.38 finished runner-up to Dunn's 6.94/215. On March 16, he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships, where he qualified #17 in the 32-car field with a 7.08. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jack Mitchell. Dave slowed to 7.29/216.86 in their race and lost to Mitchell's 7.07/221.; Photo: Drag Racing Hero's: Dragsters website - MB | Les Green was at least one of the owners.

Notes: Dave's best NHRA national event times were a 7.088/195.22 qualifier at Pomona (and a 14.660/57.47 eliminations run). This was the only time he drove the car in national event competition this year.

Notes: Baca was at the NHRA Division 7 race in Palmdale in September. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #4 with a 6.44/214.14. He beat Greg Daebelliehn in the first round, and in round two, his 6.31/217.88 stopped Billy Williams' 6.51/214. Another 6.31 at 217.62 in the semifinals beat a tire-smoking Lou Gasparelli and moved him into the final against Brad Anderson. "Bad Brad" had been running 6.2s all day, and in the final, he set Low ET with a 6.21/220 win over David's 6.74/154.85. He was at Firebird Raceway in mid-October for the NHRA Fallnationals. His 6.17/224.71 qualified #5. In the opening round, his 6.22/219.45 stopped Jim Epler at 6.27/223. But in the second round, his 6.24/214.03 lost to Pat Austin's 6.07/230. Notes: Baca was at Firebird Raceway in February for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. His 6.13/228.89 qualified #6, and in round one, he improved to 6.11/238.94 to defeat Tom Bristow's 6.30/217. He ran even better in round two, where he fouled away a 6.10/229.88 against Cruz Pedregon, who advanced at 6.08/230. The following week (Feb. 25), he was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Division 4 opener. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.04/232.55 qualified second behind Pat Austin's 5.98/233. David fell out of the pace in the opening round, where his 6.20/228.23 beat Todd Simpson's 6.21/226. But a 7.04/130.96 in the semifinal lost to Gary Rettell's 6.46/180. At NHRA Columbus, David qualified 16th at 6.25/226.41. He was a no-show against No. 1 qualifier Gary Rettell for round one. Rick Howard photo from 1990 NHRA Budweiser Springnats, Columbus. Notes: Baca qualified #19 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.14/205.01. He fouled in the first round, against Leroy Goldstein. On October 19, Baca qualified #1 with a 6.74 at the Fremont Fallnationals. He ran a first-round 6.77/205.92 over Jerry Ruth and in the semifinals, a 6.84 advanced over James Warren, who broke a rear end. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Unfortunately, his car failed to fire. It was sad because Prudhomme put a rod through the side of his block and could only coax a 20.94 out of it.

In the first round of the 32-car show, both he and Les Allen ran 6.91, but Dennis got the win. He had another close race in round two when his 6.83/209.30 beat Tony Nancy's 6.85/209. In round three, he ran Dave Uyehara and they both broke, but Baca won the coasting contest with a 7.20/172.08. Luck was on his side in the semifinals when he lost a rear end and ran 8.94/105.63, but still won when Carl Olson shut off to a 9.48/138. In the final, he faced James Warren. Baca's luck ran out as his 6.78/201.78 lost to Warren's 6.68/230. | NHRA best national event ET was 6.550/225.56 at the Indy Nationals. Also ran 6.68 at Fremont 1970 and 209.30 at Irwindale 10/3/70.

Notes: Dennis qualified #16 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field, and his 6.903/218.44 got him the spot. He beat Bill Dunlap in the opening round, 7.02/211.26 to 7.29/213.77, but his shut off 7.56/161.57 in round two lost to Gerry Glenn's 6.87/215.82. The following weekend (February 14), he was in Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.89 qualified second to Tommy Allen's track record 6.73. He improved to 6.82 in the first round to beat Clayton Harris, and a 6.77 in round two advanced when Tom Kaiser fouled against him. Unfortunately, it was he who fouled in the semi-final against eventual winner Rick Ramsey. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #6 at 6.73. He beat Bob Noice in round one, but a tire-smoking 8.14/129.11 fell to Don Garlits' 6.68/210 in round two. Shortly after that, he was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals. He qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field before rain delayed the race until April 4. While waiting for the rain, he went to Fresno on March 21 and won over a sixteen-car field. A 6.72/186.32 beat Dwight Hughes' 6.91 in round one. That was followed by a 6.84/188.36 over Gary Ritter in round two. In the semi-final, Larry Dixon blew his engine against him, and Dennis advanced at 6.79. He faced Dwight Salisbury in the final, and Dwight fouled, letting Baca run an easy 7.52 for the win. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 27, and Baca was there. All the OCIR All-Pro races were eight-car shows except the final, a sixteen-car field. Baca beat Leland Kolb in round one before losing to John Wiebe in the second round. He then returned to Fremont to finish the running of the Northern Nationals. He defeated John Anderson in the first round. Baca lost a close race against Hughes in the second round, where his 6.86/191.08 fell to Hughes' 6.85/218. Dennis qualified #14 at the Dallas Springnationals at 6.706/195.65. He beat Brien Budd in round one, 6.84/198.23 to 6.84/212.76. Dennis could not show for round two, sending Tom McEwen on an 11-second single. Dennis debuted a new rear-engine car at Indy.

Notes: Dennis Baca debuted his new rear-engined car at Bonneville Raceway on August 22 for the NHRA Division 7 race. The car showed great promise, qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.75. He improved to a track record 6.71 in the first round to beat Tony Nancy's 7.04. Unfortunately, while getting ready to race Tom Kaiser in his semifinal race, he discovered he had hurt his motor in the first-round race. He qualified #12 at Indy with a 6.533/226.70 but could not race in eliminations and was replaced by Gary Cochran. Dennis qualified #7 at Ontario at 6.720/199.18. In round one, he beat Gaines Markley, 6.80/182.18 to 7.45/143. He lost to Jeb Allen in round two, 6.64/221 to 6.76/212.31.

Notes: Baca started the season by winning the Fremont New Year's race on January 2. He qualified #1 with a 6.44 and beat a fouling Dwight Hughes in the first round, with a 6.60. He had another easy run in the semis when Flip Schofield fouled, but he beat Gary Ormsby with a 6.43 track record in the final. He didn't do quite as well on January 28 at the Lions Grand Premiere, as a 6.47/229.59 lost to James Warren's 6.44/231 in the first round. Dennis ran well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.51/231.95 (Top Speed). He ran 6.50, followed by an easy single, a 6.56/231.95, and a 6.73 to make the final over, in order, Hank Johnson, Frank Bradley, Don Moody, and Dale Funk. In the final, he smoked the tires to a 7.33/214.79 that finished second best to Carl Olson's 6.74/219. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #3 with a 6.65. Unfortunately, he lost the race against Dwight Salisbury when his motor blew at half-track in the first round. He ran well at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, going all the way to the semifinals before Don Garlits beat him with 6.18/236.22 times. Dennis still ran a 6.4, but it paled compared to Don's run. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Irwindale's NHRA Division 7 Opener with a 6.38 but failed to reach the finals. Dennis ran his best ET of the year at 6.14 at the Last Drag Race, Long Beach, CA, 12/02/72. He ran 6.297/229.59 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge (runner-up to Moody). Also ran 6.175/230.76 at Ontario 1972 and 6.16 at Lions WCS 72, which was half of the quickest side by side run in history (Don Moody 6.13). AKA Carpetbagger.

Notes: AKA the Carpetbagger. Dennis' nickname came from the fact that he owned a carpet company. Baca hired Jim Davis to build the 238" chassis for his new car for '73. It took three months and $12,000 to build. The engine was a 426 Hemi that used an Ashland Crank to up the cubes to 486. The bore remained stock. KB rods were used with Brooks pistons. Engle was his camshaft of choice. A Cragar manifold held a Larry Bowers-built blower in place. The 85% nitro mix was fed to the engine by Enderle injection. The estimated output was 1,800 hp. The dragster used a Detroit Locker rear with 4.10 gears. Dennis started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. He ran 6.47 to qualify #4 in the sixteen-car show. In the opening round, he improved to 6.41/225.56 to defeat Randy Allison's 6.49. In the second round, he slowed to an off-pace 7.04/158.73 that lost to eventual winner Frank Prock's 6.42/222. He had another early loss at the second OCIR All-Pro race. He had run 6.24/230.76 (Top Speed) to qualify second in the eight-car field behind John Wiebe's 6.22. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires to a 6.90/222 in the first round, and lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.51/212. There was no traction at Pomona for the Winternationals, and Baca's poor 7.03/220.58 still qualified in the top half (#12) of the 32-car field. He beat Rick Ramsey and Steve Carbone in the first two rounds. In the third round, a 6.73/225.56 beat Carl Olson. In the semifinals, a 6.72/227.27 beat Gaines Markley's 6.84/225. Unfortunately, a final round 7.07/213 gave Baca the runner-up spot to Don Garlits' 6.74/235. The following week (February 25), Dennis went to Sacramento for an eight-car show. His 6.71 qualified #5, and just like the previous week, he lost to Garlits. This time, it came in round one, where he smoked the tires while "Big Daddy" advanced with a 6.60/223. Shortly after that came the Bakersfield March Meet. It was another 32-car affair, and Baca qualified #13. But in round one, his troubled, shut off, 7.15 lost to Fred Mooneyham. Fresno Dragway held its Winter Race of Champions event on March 18, and Dennis qualified on the pole for the sixteen-car field with a 6.14. An opening round 6.40/231.95 advanced when Dwight Salisbury pitched a blower. In the second round, Baca fouled against Bill Dunlap. In April, he competed at the California State Championships held at Sacramento. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #7. In the first round, his 6.48/218.98 lost to the eventual winner James Warren, who ran 6.16/225 to advance. On May 12, he was back at OCIR for its Constructor's Championships. It was a 32-car field, and Baca's 6.43 got him the #6 spot. An opening round 6.41/228.42 beat Carl Olson's 6.83/198 in T.B. Smallwood's car. He ran an easy solo (8.62/104.52) in round two when Les Allen's goggles broke, and he could not run. But in round three, Dennis smoked the tires and shut off to a 10.69/73.95 loss against Billy Tidwell's 6.66/218. Dennis ran 6.43 at Orange County's Big 4 event on 5/12/73 and 6.286/231.36 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73.

Notes: Baca did not tour as much in '74 as he had in previous years. He did not qualify at the Pomona Winternationals, but that was his only NHRA national event all year. He qualified #1 at the Sacramento Grand Opener in February with a 6.08. The time held for Low ET, but Dennis failed to reach the finals. He was back at Sacramento for another Top Fuel race in March, but again failed in his bid to reach the final. His next race was the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont. There he was running strong. A 6.39 qualified him #5 in the sixteen-car field and a first-round 6.27/213.27 advanced when Gerry Glenn shut off. In round two his 6.21/231.36 beat Dan Richins and another 6.21/234 in the semifinals stopped James Warren who lost an engine at half-track. This put Baca into the final against Don Garlits. Both had smoky runs in the final, but Garlits' 6.86/231 nipped Baca's 6.87/225.56. He did not race at the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Pomona, but he was at the second Division 7 race held at Sacramento. His 6.25 qualified #4 in the twelve car field. But in round one, his dragster broke, handing the win to Don Durbin. Early in July, he faced off against James Warren in a best of three match race at Fremont. Unfortunately, this was not Baca's day as he lost all three races. A couple of days later, he was at Irwindale for another NHRA Division 7 race. Frank Bradley's 6.42/213 beat his 6.64/226.13 in round one. He then had a rematch against Warren at OCIR. James won the first race, but then Baca's 6.25/231.36 won the second. The tiebreaker for the victory saw Warren take it with a 6.06/217 over Dennis' 6.35/233.76. The Top Fuel teams returned to OCIR for the PDA Championships on July 26. There were 56 cars attempting to qualify for the 32-car show. Baca qualified and then out drove a sleepy Bradley in the first round, where Dennis ran 6.38/223.32 over Frank's 6.34/230. In round two, Rance McDaniel thought that it was time to show just how powerful his Chevy was and he laid down a 6.01 (Low ET) to beat Baca's 6.36.

Notes: Dennis failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.160/230.17. He qualified #15 at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.19/233.76. An opening round 6.26/194.80 advanced when Shorty Leventon fouled. He ran a career-best (to this point) 6.03/230.76 in round two to beat Dave Uyehara's 6.24/228. But his 6.19/231.95 in round three (32-car field) lost to Gary Ritter's 6.09/234. Dennis’s second NHRA national event was the finals at Ontario, but he did not qualify (no time) there.

Notes: AKA The Carpetbagger. Best times at NHRA Ontario at 5.870/234.37. | Baca started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.07/216.86 best failed to make the field. His next showing was at the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.09/229.00 qualified #10 in the 32-car show. But he was a little late off the line in the opening round, and his 6.18/226.13 lost to Gary Cochran's 6.22/224. Later that month, he won an eight-car show at Sacramento. Dennis had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.01, and in the first round, his 6.31/193 beat Shorty Leventon's 6.41/218. Gary Ormsby was shut off on the line with a fuel leak in the semifinals, and Baca's 6.15/227.85 advanced. He faced Shirley Muldowney in the final, and she had problems and shut down to 9.61 while Dennis got the victory with a 6.25/202.24. At the end of March, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 Opener. His 6.25/231.95 qualified #12. He faced Gary Beck in the opening round, and Beck had run 6.07 in qualifying, so it looked bad for Baca. But Beck's car sounded rough, and sure enough, it spit and popped to a 27 second time while Dennis advanced with a 6.46/220.58. However, his fun was short-lived as in round two, eventual winner Frank Bradley's 6.23/214 sent Baca's 6.37/231.36 packing for home.

Notes: Photo from the 1977 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Lots of 5.80s in winning the Ontario World Finals. Qualified at Ontario at 5.971/238.72. Ran 5.93 at Sacramento. | Dennis was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.97/247.93 and in round one, his 6.07 beat Jim Plummer. A round two 6.00/233.16 took out Bruce Walker, but in the semifinals, his 6.13/239.36 lost to Garlits' 6.08/242. He also made it into the semifinals at the Bakersfield March Meet. Once again, it was Garlits who stopped him. Dennis won NHRA Indy and the World Finals. Confirmed 5.845 at NHRA Ontario. Did Dennis run 5.81 somewhere this year?

Notes: Lost in round one, at Indy 1978 with a 6.20/220. | Baca failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals, running 6.109/236.22 for the 4th alternate slot. But he turned around and won the Bakersfield March Meet. Baca qualified #5 with a 5.97 in the 32-car field. He lost a blower belt in the final and slowed to a 7.14/130.43 but still held off Graham Light, who smoked the tires and lost. On April 2, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 race. His 6.11 qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field. But in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.29 lost to John Kimble's 6.13. He took another win at the NHRA Division 7 points race at OCIR. He didn't look too strong in qualifying as he only qualified #12. But a first-round 6.06/217.91 beat Larry Sutton followed by a 6.00/212.76 that beat Jim Murphy in round two. He won a major battle in the semifinals where Baca ran 6.03/215.82 to beat James Warren's 6.21/187. He soloed for the victory when Gary Beck was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. Baca still ran 6.06/233.16 on the solo pass. Dennis qualified #14 at Indy with a 6.092/236.22, equalling his Pomona Speed. He lost to Gary Beck in round one, 6.09/233 to 6.20/220. Dennis finished as the second alternate at the Ontario World Finals (times not available).

Notes: Dennis was the second alternate at the Pomona Winters at 6.055 (speed unavailable). Baca was the third alternate at the US Nationals with a 6.04/230 best. After failing to qualify at Indy, Baca went to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, where his 6.01/233.16 qualified #15. Unfortunately, he blew his engine on the run and stayed up all night, replacing it with a new one. While warming up that engine, it also let go, and the third alternate, Dwight Salisbury, replaced him in the show. In October, he went to the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway, but he failed to qualify there (times unavailable). Photo from Indy 1979.

Notes: Dennis qualified #3 at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race on April 20 with a 5.94/227.84. The race was rain-delayed, and many cars did not make it back for the rain date. Because of this, Baca got to solo in the first two rounds before he lost to the eventual winner Marvin Graham, in the semifinals.
