Notes: Also, 9.65 at Portland 72 and 9.64 at Irwindale. | Bill probably had his best season in '72. The season for him started at the first OCIR All-Pro race. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, "Dyno Don" Nicholson, who had set a 9.44 track record. Bad luck was on Bill's side as the Maverick's shifter linkage broke and Bagshaw's 9.84/141.06 advanced. But in the semifinals, Bagshaw broke a rear end and had to watch as his opponent, Bob Lambeck, soloed into the final. He was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where his 9.79 qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field. Bill beat Carmen Rotunda and Bobby Yowell before running alternate Lynn Harrison in the semifinals. A 9.99 dispatched the Camaro and moved Bagshaw into the final against Butch Leal. Bill tried hard in the final, but his 9.75/141.06 was no match against Leal's winning 9.66/143. At the second OCIR All-Pro race, he ran well lasting until the semifinal of the eight-car show. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #9 in the 32-car field. He lasted until the second round, where his 9.85 lost to eventual winner Bill Jenkins' 9.62. The following week (February 13), Bagshaw was at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. A first-round 9.80 beat Sonny Bryant, but in the semifinals, his 9.75/141.73 lost to Leal's 9.70/143. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. There he lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against Bob Lambeck. At the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont, Bagshaw was running well. A second-round 9.68/143.54 beat Harrison, but he broke a driveshaft against Lambeck in the semifinals. He won the NHRA Division 7 Opener, stopping Leal in the final. Bill was at Sacramento on June 24 for the NHRA Division 7 race. While he didn't reach the final, he was the low qualifier for the eight-car field with his 9.59. He got another win on July 8th at the NHRA Division 7 race held at Lions. He faced Leal in the final, and Butch fouled away a 9.67/143 while Bagshaw ran 9.66/141.28 for the victory.9.79 NHRA Pomona CA 2/72. |

Notes: At the AHRA Winternationals, Bill ran 9.57/145.39 to qualify #11 in the sixteen-car field. A opening round 9.58/143.54 lost to eventual winner "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 9.41/143. A 9.53/144.69 qualified #8 in the 32-car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In round one, a 9.74 beat Tom Jacobson's Camaro. In round two, Bill Jenkins got out of shape and slowed to a 10.12 while Bagshaw motored to a 9.69/144.69 for the win. In round three, he lost to Jack Roush's Pinto. Bill was still running his Challenger at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He lucked out in the first round, when Butch Leal's Duster broke against him. In the semifinals, he lost to Larry Huff. A week later (March 11), he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. A 9.37/147 qualified #3 and he lasted until round two where he fouled against Ken Van Cleave. Bagshaw was runner-up to Dick Landy at Sacramento for the California State Championships. He ran 9.48 in the semifinals to earn the right to face Landy in the final. Landy's 9.17/148 was too strong for Bill's old Challenger's 9.37/146.72. |

Notes: Did Bill really go this quick in 1973? | Irwindale held an eight-car show with the cars running below legal weight in November of '73. Bill won this race beating Don Nicholson in the final with a 9.00/152.28 over "Dyno's" quicker 8.98/151. Earlier in the race Bill ran a career best (to this point) of 8.87. |

Notes: Low qualifier at AHRA Fremont on 3/30/74 at 8.922/153.84. Also ran 8.93 at Fremont, then won the event over Sonny Bryant. | Bill ran 8.94 to qualify #4 at the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he was a little tired and his first-round 9.25/149.75 lost to Sam Scott's 9.45/144. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 9.034/150.75 qualified #6. In the first round, he beat Bob Coleman's 9.17/150 with a 9.12/149.25. In round two, a 9.22/144.92 lost to Wayne Gapp's 8.99/151. Bill did not run any other NHRA national events after the Winternationals. He was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he cleaned house. He qualified #1 with a 9.10; the next closest qualifier was at 9.30. Bagshaw went on to win the event, setting Low ET and Top Speed at 9.08/149.50 along the way. As mentioned above, he won the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont on March 17 with all the honors: Low ET, Top Speed, and number one qualifier. He took his third big win of the young '74 season on April 6 at the AHRA Grand American at OCIR. Bill qualified #2 with a 9.00 and in the final, he beat low qualifier Larry Huff with a 9.04/152.54 (Top Speed). Bill went on to win the next AHRA Grand American as well. It was held at Green Valley in May. A 9.02 qualified #,2, and he went on to beat Warren Johnson's 9.21 in the final with a 9.11. At NHRA's second Division 7 race held at Sacramento in June, Bill qualified #3. He won the event with a 9.21/145.17 in the final over Sonny Bryant's late 9.10/150. He won the next Division 7 race as well. It was held at Irwindale, and there, his final round 9.11/149 stopped the Pinto of Lee Hunter. Bill had an unfortunate accident in St. Louis in July. He was there running at the AHRA Gateway Nationals when his car got out of control and crashed into the stands. Two people died and another 19 were injured in the crash. |

Notes: Bagshaw attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his 9.09 best failed to crack the 9.06 "bump." Things went better at the Bakersfield March Meet, where an 8.95 qualified #3. He reached the final against upstart Tom Chelbana and a 9.00/150.25 gave him the victory over Tom's fouling 9.12/138. He also won the second NHRA Division 7 race held at OCIR. He beat Chelbana in the first round, before running a great 8.87/155.17 (Top Speed) to beat Lee Hunter's 9.02/128 in the semifinals. He picked up to an 8.82 (Low ET) at 154 in the final for the victory over Kevin Rotty's 9.06/150. Bill also won the OCIR Funny Car 500 at the end of May. There he stopped Mark Yuill in the final. Times and info from National Dragster, 3/19/76. Ran 8.90/152.06 at Fremont Raceway WCS 3/76. |

Notes: Chassis built in late 60's as Fuel Altered. Originally the car had a tip-up Fiat Topo body. Mayhem is an old school Altered with a 96" wheelbase. I've updated the chassis to run Super Pro or Top ET classes. Or, pull out the D-Box and run Nostalgia. The Logo is the Insane Mayhem Shrimp. |
