Notes: Ran 6.91/210.77 at Epping on July 4/1971, beating Jungle's 6.95/207.37 in Round 2. | The Hill brothers were at Aquasco for an eight-car show in April. In the first round, his 7.82/182.92 advanced when his opponent, Tommy Grove, had to shut down on the line with a small fire. The semifinals saw Hill's car lose fire, advancing eventual winner Leroy Goldstein in the "Ramchargers" car. In May, they were at Island Dragway for an NHRA Funny Car Circuit race. It was another eight-car show and Pete's 7.89/188.67 in the first round, beat Tom Prock in Al Bergler's car. But in the semifinals, he lost to the strong Chevy-powered car of Charlie Therwhanger. The team went to Maple Grove on June 26 for the NHRA Division 1 race. Pete qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 7.28 and in round one, he made an 8.35 solo when Tom Sneden broke and was unable to run. In the semifinals, his 7.41/203.16 lost to eventual winner Casey Powell's 7.19/197.

Notes: Pete was at Connecticut in July for the Summer Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car field and Hill ran well. In the opening round, his 7.08/207.37 beat Frank Federici. A round two 7.08 beat Ken Poffenberger's 7.38, and in the semifinals, his 6.90/218.44 beat Roy Harris' 6.96/196 in the "Frantic Ford." He faced Phil Castronovo in the final who also ran 6.90 in his semifinal win. But Hill slowed to a 7.13/191.89 in the final that lost to Castronovo's 6.96/218.

Notes: Hill was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 6.510/218.44 to qualify #6. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.843/187.89 lost to Al Bergler's 6.53/220 in the "Motown Shaker." Hill was at Englishtown early in April for a six-car, round-robin race. In his first race, his off-pace 8.04/118.42 lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.83/210. He raced Jim again in his second race; this time, his 7.08/208.32 beat Liberman's 7.12/214. In his last race, he went up against Pat Foster. Pete got out of shape and shut down as Foster ran a stout 6.37/230. Shortly after that, he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. He lost to Pee Wee Wallace in the opening round. He failed to qualify at Cecil County on April 15 for its National Open. Pete was back at Englishtown for another eight-car show. He made a solo in the first round when Tom Sneden broke in the Bob Banning car. Hill ran 6.92/198.23 to advance. But in the semifinals, his late leaving 6.84/213.77 lost to Jake Crimmins' 6.88/210 in the "Swensen and Lani" Mustang. The Hill Brothers were in Connecticut in September for its East-Coast Mini-Nationals. In the first round, Pete's 6.74/211.76 beat Jake Crimmins' quicker 6.71/216. A 7.01/213.77 lost to eventual winner Jimmy King's 6.75/216 in the semifinal. Shortly after, they were at Lebanon Valley for the All-American FC Showdown. The track was slick, and all eight cars there slipped and slid in the first round prompting the track to have all cars run in the second round, with the two Low ET cars racing in the final. Pete's 7.36 lost to Roy Harris 6.90 in the "Frantic Ford." Hill's ET failed to advance to the final. New England held its annual 32-car FC Nationals soon after that, and Pete lasted until the second round before his 6.67/207 lost to Bob Mayer's 6.68/196. He also ran well at Suffolk's Dixie Classic. A quick-leaving 6.79/188 in the first round defeated Wayne Oxner's 6.60/204. He improved to 6.69/214 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough as Mayer beat him with a 6.60/215. Hill was back in Lebanon Valley in October for an eight-car show. In the first round, he beat Marsh Bagg, who got out of shape with a 7.35/173.70. In the semifinal, Shirley Muldowney's 7.23/136 fell to his 6.69/196.50. Hill faced the "Ramchargers" Demon driven by Clare Sanders in the final. Sanders was running well, and his 6.34/218 in the final easily covered Pete's 7.04/186.03 runner-up effort. Maple Grove held its Fall FC Finale in the middle of the month, and Hill's 6.81/210.77 lost to Jake Crimmins' 6.59/218.44 in the first round. Pete also ran 6.69 at Suffolk, VA, in 1973.

Notes: Hill was at Epping in July for an eight-car show. He qualified on the bump with a 7.86/176. While that might seem slow, Raymond Beadle, the "Frantic Ford," and the "Alabamian" all failed to better his time. In the opening round of eliminations, he improved to 7.01/190, but it wasn't enough to beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.79/175. On July 25, he competed at the All-American Series race at Maple Grove. His off-pace 7.96 in the first round, lost to Al Segrini's 6.57. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74.

It was an eight-car show that had all the cars run three rounds of racing, and the two Low ET cars would then meet in the final. Pete had problems on his first run, shutting down to 12.09 in a loss to Ivo's 7.28. In his second race, the car got crossed-up, and his 8.02/156.79 lost to Bruce Larson's 6.76/205. He made his best pass on his third run, a 6.77/175.43, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.41. In August, Hill was at Empire Dragway for its Gold Cup Championships. It was an eight-car field, and in the first round, he fouled against George Johnson.

Notes: In March, Roy was at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #14 with a 9.703/139.96. An opening round 9.83/139.96 lost to Stuart McDade's 9.68/141. He had a bit of luck on his side at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. In the first two rounds of competition, both Linwood Craft and Bruce Walker in Barry Setzer's Camaro fouled against him. Unfortunately, he missed a shift in the semifinals against eventual winner Ronnie Sox. Hill was at the USRT event at Capitol Raceway in May, where although he lost early, he recorded a 9.69 in qualifying. In June, he had one of the 32 Pro Stock cars that showed up to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #13, but in round one, his off-pace 10.51 lost to Mike Fons' 9.89. Roy qualified #22 at Englishtown at 9.844/138.24 but lost in round one, to Dick Landy, 9.69/142 to 9.840/138.88. At Indy, Roy qualified #20 at 9.847/137.19. He lost to Carmen Rotonda in round one, 9.84/134 to 9.889/137.19. Roy also ran 9.69 at Blaney SC.

Notes: Hill was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals in January. He qualified #8 with a 9.40/144.46. Hill beat alternate Kevin Rotty in the first round, with a 9.34/143.54, but in round two, his 9.36/143.77 lost to Melvin Yow's 9.34/146. He qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 9.55/142.63. But he left due to the rain delay. At the NHRA Gatornationals on March 18, a 9.32/144.00 qualified #11. A first-round 9.36/145.36 lost to Ronnie Sox's 9.15/147. Later in March, he was at Warner Robins for an eight-car show. Roy qualified #2 behind Melvin Yow in Billy Stepp's Demon. Hill ran 9.45 in the first round to beat Max Smith's 'Cuda, and in the semifinals, he got a "bye run" and ran 12.24. The meet was then rained out and never completed. In May, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Roy qualified #11 with a 9.29. In the first round, he beat Don Nicholson's 9.35/141 with a 9.33/140.00. In round two, he ran 9.37/141.95 but lost to Ronnie Lyles' 9.28/146. On June 2, he was at Blaney Drag Strip for the third NHRA Division 2 race. Unfortunately, he fouled against Oscar Roberts in the opening round. Hill qualified #5 at Columbus with a 9.52 for the NHRA Springnationals. But a first-round 9.77/140.84 lost to Yow's 9.51/148. Early in July, he went to Kil-Kare Dragway for its Pro Stock Showdown race. It was an eight-car field, and in the first round, his 9.39 defeated Jeg Coughlin's 9.65. In the semifinals, he faced the AMC Hornet of Wally Booth. Wally fouled away a 9.32 while Roy advanced with a 9.32 of his own. He faced Wayne Gapp in the final. The Pinto had the edge as Wayne was running 9.2's. Sure enough, Roy's 9.33 in the final finished runner-up to Gapp's 9.21. Shortly after that (July 15), Englishtown hosted the NHRA Summernationals. Roy qualified #13 with a 9.30. That wasn't bad, considering almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify for the 32-car field. He beat Lyles in the first round, but a 9.36/144.69 in the second round lost to Yow's 9.18/150. Roy qualified #12 at Bristol on September 16 for the IHRA All-American Nationals. The car broke in the opening round against Ronnie Sox. In October, he competed at the IHRA Nationals at Lakeland. It was a sixteen-car field, and a 9.34/137.61 in round one beat Hubert Platt. He fouled away a 9.43/143 against Gapp in round two. Near the end of the season (November 25), he was at Gainesville for the Turkey Trot National Open. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 9.25/147.05 behind Reid Whisnant's 9.12/149. in the opening round, his 9.27/138 beat Max Smith. Not sure how they did their eliminations, as this was an NHRA run, but usually, the #1 and #2 qualifiers don't meet until the final. But here, the two met in the semifinal, and Roy lost to Reid's 9.04. Also ran 9.30 at Cecil County and 9.38/145.63 NHRA Indianapolis.

Notes: Due to NHRA's Pro Stock wight breaks, Hill did not spend much of his time racing Pro Stock in '74 as he was running his SS/B Plymouth in Super Stock. In March, he was racing his Pro Stock car at Charlotte Speedway for the IHRA Southern Nationals. The track was 1/8 mile, and it was an eight-car field in the PRO categories. Roy qualified #5, meaning he would race low qualifier Lamar Walden in Barry Setzer's Vega in the first round. After a great 5.90 in qualifying, Lamar slowed to 6.08 in the first round, and lost to Hill's 6.00/118.57. Hill's 6.06/117.95 beat Sam Carroll in the semifinals and moved him into the final against Wayne Gapp. Roy ran a good 6.05/117.95 in the final, but Gapp ran a strong 5.80/123.11 for the victory. He also ran the Duster at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race in April. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 9.09 lost to eventual winner Wally Booth's 8.93. At the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, Hill's 9.07/151.51 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. At the third NHRA Division 2 race, Hill didn't win or even reach the finals, but he showed that he was making some upstairs horsepower when he ran 149.75 for Top Speed. He qualified #7 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.20/150.50, and in round one, his 9.26/149.75 beat Kenny Hahn. In round two, Ken Dondero fouled away a 9.22/150, and Hill advanced with a 9.51/127.11. He got another easy run in the semifinals when Bobby Yowell's Dart failed to start. Roy soloed with a 9.44/127.84. In the final, he faced Bob Glidden. Bob's Pinto had been running 9.1's throughout eliminations, so Hill gambled on the tree and lost. He fouled away a 9.22/150.00 while Glidden ran 9.11/153 for the win. The following week (June 16), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 9.201 qualified #3 behind the Pintos of Glidden and John Lingenfelter. In the first round, he fouled away a 9.35 against Al Baldwin's 9.53. Hill won over an eight-car field in July at Colonial Beach. He set Low ET in qualifying with a 9.10 and then ran 9.22/146.78 to defeat Sam Auxier's 9.53/141 and 9.13/145.39 in the semifinal over a fouling Carl Hobson. He went up against Bruce Larson in the final, and Hill's 9.11/147.50 (Top Speed) got the victory over Bruce's 9.22/146. He ran really well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 9.13 only qualified #12, but in the opening round of eliminations, his 9.17/150.00 beat Richie Zul's 9.24. Only three Mopars qualified, and he was the only one left after round one. A 9.23 in round two defeated Kelly Chadwick's 9.28 and moved him into the semifinals. There was one of each brand in the semis, his Mopar, a Ford, A Chevy, and an AMC. Unfortunately, Hill's 9.34/148.76 lost to Wayne Gapp's 9.04/151. Shortly after that, he was at Maryland International for the second running of the Pro Stock Open. It was a sixteen-car field, and Roy qualified #10. in the opening round, his 9.21/149.25 lost to Bob Glidden's 8.91/153. Former Butch Leal Duster. Ran 8.95/151.00 at PRO race at NY National at 6.75 pounds per cubic inch. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Roy ran 9.036/149.71 at NHRA Ontario 10/74. Butch ran 9.06 at Suffolk, 9.201/150.50 at Columbus (runner-up), 9.139/152.28 at Englishtown (semis), and 9.30 at Indy.

Notes: Roy was at Capitol for a six car invitational Pro Stock race. All cars made three runs, and they ran at 6.5 lbs per cubic inch. In Hill's first race, he ran 8.86/154.26 to beat Richie Zul's 9.08/149. In his second race, he beat Ken Dondero in Bill Jenkins' Vega, but the clocks didn't record his ET. The speed on the run was 154.11. On his third run, his 8.87/154.56 lost to Herb McCandless' 8.83/153 in Brooklyn Heavy's car.

Notes: Also ran 8.97/150.75 in reaching the semis at IHRA Bristol June 1975. | At the IHRA Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood, Hill qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden, which he lost. Roy was at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was curious to see what NHRA's new 7.10 lb. weight break for the Hemi-powered cars would do for his performance. He ran 8.999 to qualify #12. Five Mopars made the field, but none were able to crack the top eight spots in qualifying. Hill's 9.02 in the first round, lost to Dave Kanners' Hornet at 8.98. The Pro Stock Open was run at Southeastern's 900-foot track in April. Roy did really well, running an opening round 7.51 over Billy Ewing and a semifinal 7.56 that narrowly beat Hubert Platt's 7.57. It was an all-Mopar final as he went up against Reid Whisnant for the title. Reid had been running a bit quicker on this day, and his final round 7.45 gave Hill's 7.60 the runner-up spot. He was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Hill ran 9.13 in the first round, to beat Ronnie Sox, and in round two, he soloed with an 8.92 when Lamar Walden broke in the Barry Setzer Vega. His run ended in the semifinals, where his 8.88/150.00 lost to Glidden's identical 8.88 at 152. Roy did get the Top Speed of the meet at 154.37. Roy was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race, and while he qualified for the eight-car field, he failed to reach the finals. He qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.15/149.50. Another 9.15/149.50 in the first round, beat Don Nicholson's late 9.05/149. In round two, he faced Glidden. Bob had problems and ran an off-pace 9.34 while Roy advanced with a 9.13. He had a bit more luck on his side in the semifinals when Richie Zul fouled away a 9.09, and Hill's 9.12 got the win light. This put him into the final against Bill Jenkins. Roy's 9.16/149.75 finished runner-up to Bill's 8.98/152. At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, he ran 9.01 to qualify #5 in the sixteen-car show, but once again, he failed to reach the finals. On July 13, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 9.04/151.51, setting up a first-round meeting with Wayne Gapp's low qualified 4-door Maverick. Hill tried hard in their match, but his 8.990/152.54 finished behind Gapp's 8.96/152. After Englishtown, most Pro Stock racers made a stop at Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open on July 18. It was a sixteen-car field, and Hill won the show. He started with a 9.03 over Carl Hobson, and in round two, he ran 8.98 while losing to Richie Zul's 8.94. But he got back in on the "break rule" as Low ET loser from the previous round when Jenkins broke and could not run in the semifinals. Roy made the best of his second chance by beating Nicholson's 8.97 in the semifinals with a quick-leaving 9.03. He made his best run of eliminations in the final, where an 8.97/151.76 got him the victory over Scott Shafiroff's 8.99/150. Roy got a runner-up finish at the IHRA Nationals at Dragway 42 in August. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 9.01/153.58 and then beat Tim Lysikowski in the first round, with a 9.12/153.58. A 9.06 in the semifinals beat Larry Huff's quicker 8.94. This put Hill into the final against Nicholson. The two had a close race, but "Dyno's" 9.00/154 prevailed over Roy's 9.04/153.84. | Roy ran at Southeastern Dragway in April at an eight-car show. He ran at least as quick as 7.56 at the 1000 foot track. | Best NHRA national event times were the 8.990/152.54 in round one, at Englishtown.

Notes: Roy had probably the strongest Mopar on the NHRA trail in '76. He started the season at Irwindale's Grand Premier race, setting Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at 8.79/154.63. The closest anyone could get to him in qualifying was Lee Hunter's 8.90 way back in second. But in the opening round, Hill fouled against Gary Hansen. At Tucson, Arizona, for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with an 8.80 but lost to Ken Dondero's 9.06 in the first round, with an off-pace 9.18. He then went to Beeline for the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic, where he qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field with an 8.98. He beat Jack Schorr in the first round with a 9.00/152.54 before losing to Richie Zul in round two. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with an 8.84/156.25. His 8.86/155.17 stopped Shelby Jester in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.86/155 with an 8.93/154.10 in round two. Hill ran strong at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornats. There he qualified #6 with an 8.82. A even better 8.80/155.70 beat Larry Ford's 8.99/150 in round one, but he was slow off the line in round two, where his 8.84/155.44 lost to Dave Kanners' 8.88/153. until the second round, where his 8.84. He then made the trip to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Roy lasted until the semifinals before his 8.81/156.79 lost to Scott Shafiroff's 8.77/154. He ended the month of March with a win on the 28th at Warner Robins NHRA Division 2 Opener. He qualified #1 with an 8.91 and then got the "odd lot" solo in the first round, where he advanced with an 8.94. Roy set Low ET in the semifinal when he ran 8.85/153.05 to best Reid Whisnant's 9.08/151. He ran 8.85/154.63 (Top Speed) for the victory over Lamar Walden in the final. Roy showed that the Mopars could still run under NHRA's weight breaks by qualifying #2 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals (8.89) and setting Top Speed at 154.63. Unfortunately, he broke the motor and was unable to run eliminations. It was interesting to note that he still sat third in the NHRA Pro Stock points after this race behind Warren Johnson and Glidden. He also looked strong at the IHRA Dixie Nationals at Atlanta on May 23, where he reached the final against Glidden only to break on the line. He had run 8.88 in the semifinal, beating "Dyno Don" Nicholson. On June 5, he won the third NHRA Division 2 race at Blaney, South Carolina. He needed only a 9.23 to win as Wally Booth broke a clutch in the final. The following week (June 13), he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. Only two Mopars qualified, and Hill was the quickest with an 8.88 (#3). The two Mopars met in the opening round, and Roy's 9.14/148 beat Bobby Yowell's 9.22/150. But in the second round, an ailing 9.39/120.00 lost to Charlie Reed's 9.07/138. His performance was off at the NHRA Summernationals, where he was the #12 qualifier. In the first round, his 8.95/152.02 lost to Kanner's 8.81/155. He did better at Suffolk for the fourth NHRA Division 2 race the following weekend. He finished runner-up to Richie Zul's 8.79/153 with an 8.79 of his own at 154.37 (Top Speed). Petty Built.

In the first round, he fouled against Wally Booth. Two weeks later, he was at Warner Robins for the NHRA Division 2 Opener. There he finished runner-up to Don Nicholson. He was also runner-up at the next Division 2 race held at DeSoto. Hill set Low ET and Top Speed, but in the final, his late 9.13 lost to Lamar Walden's 9.15. Number 18 at Indy with a 9.003 152.80 .

Notes: Roy Hill was definitely a fan of this type of "no-rules", mountain motor racing. He started the season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. An 8.50/162 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. A first-round 8.39/163 beat Calvin Nabors' 8.62/161 and an even better 8.36/165.13 beat Pat Musi's 8.50/161 in the semifinals. It was a Ford vs Mopar final as Hill went up against Wayne Gapp's Pinto. But the Pinto got out of shape in the final and Wayne shut down while Hill ran 8.39/164 for the victory. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where his 8.38/165 qualified #3 behind the Chevys of John Brumley and Lee Edwards. An opening round 8.49/163 beat Sam Carroll's 8.67/155 and an 8.50/162 in round two took out alternate Ellis Milner's 8.75/155. He moved into his second IHRA final of the season by running an 8.54/165 in the semifinals against a fouling Brumley. Unfortunately, he faced the strong Vega of Edwards in the final and lost. He did not attend the next three IHRA event and in August he was at Budd's Creek, Maryland, driving Musi's Monza.

Notes: Hill started the '79 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals before fouling against Kevin Rotty. Roy qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.80/156.79. In the first round, his 8.82/155.17 advanced when Tom Chelbana's Starfire broke. Ronnie Sox's Omni broke in round two, and Roy moved into the semifinals with an 8.80. Unfortunately, his Arrow broke in just off the line in his semifinal race with Joe Satmary. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationalsand at Columbus for the NHRA pringnationals where his 8.88 best was only good enough for the third alternate. Roy failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He blew an engine so badly during qualifying that the rods coming out of the engine actually damaged the frame. His 8.89/154.10 best was good for the sixth alternate.

Notes: Also 8.74 at NHRA Columbus 6/80. Roy qualified #10 at the NHRA Winternationals but lost to Bob Glidden in the first round. He did better at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he was runner-up to Randy Humphrey's 8.54/154 with an 8.72/156.52. He was runner-up again at the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins, where he fouled away an 8.78/154.37 in the final. Roy had the misfortune of qualifying #9 at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.74/156.24. It was unfortunate because he again met Glidden in the first round. This time Roy's car broke on the line giving Bob a single into round two. Roy was at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals, where he used an 8.71/156.24 to qualify #13. Unfortunately, he could not run in the first round, and alternate Sam Gianino took his place in the field. Lee Shepherd beat him in the first round, at the US Pro Stock Open at Maryland International. At Indy for the US Nationals, Roy just made the field with an 8.71 that held for #16. He lost early. Hill spent a lot of time with his big match race, IHRA motors, and skipped many NHRA events, including the High Nationals, the Grandnationals in Canada, and the season's final two events, the Fallnationals and the World Finals. He was one of many that were unhappy with the weight breaks for the Chrysler cars.
