Notes: Roy Hill started his '81 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals in January. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but an opening round 8.64 lost to Pat Musi's 8.32. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with an 8.56/159.01. In the first race, he faced low qualifier Bob Glidden, and his 8.66/157.34 fell to Glidden's 8.41/159. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #11 with an 8.54/158.45. In the first round, his 8.57/158.45 lost to the eventual winner Frank Iaconio's 8.39/161. Did Roy go 8.355 at 165.59 in 1981? It's listed as match race times. Roy recorded his best NHRA legal times at the World Finals at OCIR: 8.505/159.85. |

Notes: Formerly listed in Legal Pro Stock at 8.355/167.59 in 1981. Those are very likely match race times, so the speed remains listed here. Confirmed 8.13/166.35 in Atlanta Raceway Mountain Motor Challenge on 10/10/81. |

Notes: Qualified #5 at first 500 inch Pro Stock race at the 1982 NHRA Winternationals with an 8.016/173.74. He was the quickest of the three Mopars that qualified for the show. Unfortunately, a troubled 10.84 in the first round, lost to John Hagen's 8.45. He also had the quickest Mopar in qualifying at the NHRA Gatornationals where his 7.960/171.42 qualified #8. A first-round 8.19/164.53 beat Jerome Bradford, but he lost soon after that. An 8.00 at the IHRA Winternationals qualified him sixth, but he fouled against Lee Shepherd in round two. Hill then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car field and he was the second alternate with an 8.03/174.01 best. Roy continued to try and be competitive with the Mopar, but he was having a tougher and tougher time making the fields. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals. He pulled the plug on his Mopar program and showed up at Indy for the NHRA Nationals with a new Mercury Capri. |

Notes: Qualified 12th at 82 Indy Nationals at 7.931/174.41, where he debuted this new Mercury Capri. Unfortunately, a great 7.895 in round one, lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.80. Those were Roy's best NHRA times of the year. |

Notes: Roy started the '83 season by debuting his new Capri at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where a 9.00 qualified #5. He lost to Jim Feurer in the first round. He impressed at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he out-qualified many heavy hitters with a 7.857 173.41, good for #3 in the field. In the opening round, his 7.86/174.08 beat Butch Leal's 7.90/177. He soloed in round two as John Brumley left for another race. Roy got as far as the semifinals, where an 8.12/168.53 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.88/176. At the Gatornationals, a 7.84/176.81 qualified #14, but his 7.99/159.01 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.76/175 in the first round. He did not race at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Hill was also running hard on the IHRA Circuit, and in May, he destroyed his new Capri in a crash in North Carolina. He was not hurt and used his old Capri until a new car was ready. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. It was just an eight-car field, and Hill's 7.84/175.43 qualified #6. In the opening round, his 7.92/177.16 fell to Frank Iaconio's 7.82/177. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, a 7.92/174.41 qualified #10. Unfortunately, the car broke in the opening round against Glidden. He had difficulties at Englishtown and could only run a best of 8.15/167.91 (fifth alternate) in qualifying. He did not attend the NHRA Mile High Nationals but was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, where his 7.99/172.41 qualified #10. He lost to Iaconio in the first round. Almost 50 cars showed at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals as everyone wants to do their best for their sponsor. Hill's 7.88/174.75 qualified #14. In round one, his 7.91/175.09 defeated Don Campanello's 7.90/176. In the second round, his 7.92/175.09 fell to Lee Shepherd's 7.76/178. Roy ran 7.775 at NHRA Fremont and 180.00 at the World Finals for his best NHRA times. |

He was racing in both IHRA and NHRA events this season. Roy started the NHRA season by qualifying #10 with a 7.83 at Pomona for the Winternationals. His 7.85/176.81 lost to eventual winner Lee Shepherd's 7.73/178 in the first round. At the Gatornationals, 46 cars showed up to qualify for the 16 spots, and he again qualified #10 (7.75/178.57). A first-round 7.87 beat Bob Glidden's quicker 7.81, but in the second round, the Capri broke and gave opponent Butch Leal a free pass into the semifinals. Hill just made the field with a 7.87/174.75 (#16) in Atlanta on April 15 for the Southern Nationals. He fouled away a 7.96/174.08 in the first round against Ken Dondero. Baton Rouge was NHRA's next stop for the Cajun Nationals. Roy qualified #9 with a 7.80/177.16. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Warren Johnson and upset him with a 7.84/176, beating Johnson's 7.89/179. Unfortunately, his 7.89/178 lost to Glidden's 7.74/182 in the second round. His next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The next stop on the NHRA schedule was the Mile-High Nationals in Denver. Hill's 8.28/168.95 qualified #13 but in round one, his off-pace 8.69/146.81 fell to Butch Leal's 8.20/166. He also lost in the opening round at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Indy had 42 cars show up and attempt to qualify for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Roy's 7.90 best failed to crack the 7.83 "bump." Shortly after that, he was at Moroso Motorsports Park for its Pro Stock Challenge race. It was an eight-car show, and Hill set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at 7.76/178.21. In the first round, his 7.87/174.75 defeated Johnny Dowey's 7.85/173. In the semifinal, he fouled away a 7.88/175.43 against Reid Whisnant, who advanced with a 7.87. He ended his national event season as the second alternate for the NHRA World Finals with a 7.85/175.78. But at that event, he was driving his new Topaz. Formerly listed 7.550/184.61 for 1984, but that was too quick to be a legal run. Was it at match race weight and inches in 1984 or legal weight in 1985? |

Notes: Confirmed 7.695/182.18 at IHRA Cincinnati in 1984. | Hill's Capri wasn't short on horsepower. The car was strong, but tire shake did him in more often than anything else. At Darlington for IHRA's season-opening Winternationals, Roy qualified #7 with a 7.68. He beat Mickey Stephens in the first round, with a 7.65 and an even better 7.62 at 185 advanced in round two. Unfortunately, he got a little nervous facing Lee Shepherd in the semifinals and fouled. He also ran well at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he failed to reach the finals. He qualified in the top half of the field at Bristol(#7 at 7.70/185.18) for the IHRA Springnationals and a 7.62/183.67 advanced past a fouling Leo Clark in the first round. But in round two, he fouled against Joe Lepone. In July, he was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The little Capri showed just what it could do, resetting the IHRA speed mark to 189.07. Tire shake did him in during eliminations, but it was still a strong showing. While he was running his IHRA combination, he was still trying to sort out his "legal" 500 cubic inch motor for NHRA. His next stop on the IHRA tour was at Edgewater for the Summernationals. Roy qualified #3 and ran as well as 7.69/182.18 during eliminations before losing to Shepherd in the semifinals. It was then off to Maryland for the Mountain Motor Nationals. Hill qualified #2 with a 7.55 at a track record speed of 184.61. In the first round, his 7.57 beat Clark's 8.08. But in round two, he lost to Don Nicholson. Near the end of August, he went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. A 7.57/184.04 qualified #4. Roy then beat Lou Tabillo, Bob Olson, and Billy Ewing (in that order) to reach the final, where once again, he went up against that Camaro team from Texas. Hill was looking for a performance advantage and pulled the tree too hard, giving Shepherd another victory. He was back at Bristol in September for the IHRA Fallnationals, where he again ran well, but failed to reach the finals. The IHRA season came to a close at Rockingham for the US Open Championships. Roy's 7.55 qualified #5, and in round two, he even beat Shepherd. In the semifinals, he beat Lepone and moved into the final against Rickie Smith. Both cars ran 7.57 (Hill at 183.29), but Smith got to the finish line first. |

Notes: After having Dick Landy building his engines in '84, starting with the season opener at Pomona, Roy was now running engines built by Jon Kaase. Hill ran 7.692/182.11 to qualify ninth at the NHRA Winternats, but he fouled away a 7.73/180.36 against Glidden in the first round. At the Gatornationals, 48 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car show. The bump spot was a 7.76, and Roy's best of 7.80/178.07 failed to make the field(third alternate). The third NHRA event of the season was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Hill ran 7.82/176.60 to qualify #11, but a first-round 7.86/177.23 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.71/179. At Baton Rouge for the fourth NHRA National event, the Cajun Nationals, Roy was the third alternate with a 7.77/178.64. A 7.79/178.64 was the first alternate at Columbus for the Springnationals with a 7.79/176.64. He qualified eleventh at 7.71 at the NHRA Summernats. He lost in the first round, to Allen. He grabbed a win at the Pro Stock Open at Maryland International. At the Mile High Nationals in Denver, Hill's 8.19/169.17 qualified #14, but he lost early. Hill lost three engines due to a broken shifter pin trying to qualify for the US Nats, but his 7.79/178.63 best wasn't enough to make the field. He also qualified for the NHRA World finals with a 7.75/179.78, which was fourteenth, but he lost in the first round. In November, he debuted his '86 car with a win at the Snowbird Nats, running 7.91, 7.88, 7.77, and a final round 7.80. The Pomona Winters times were Roy's best of the year. |

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI 85. | Hill qualified fifth at the IHRA Winternats with a 7.59/183, but he fouled in the semifinals. At the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, Roy had the same fate as the other Fords, tire shake. He ran two unofficial runs of 7.56 and 7.57 at 185, but could not get a good official run in to qualify. He won the MIR Mountain Motor Nats in August, using a 650 cubic inch Boss motor. Roy qualified second with a 7.65/184 and ran a track record 7.52 in the first round. He then won the PHR Championships with steady 7.50's. At the IHRA World Nationals on August 25, he qualified third with a 7.44/189.47, but lost to Bob Glidden in the semis. On September 22, he showed up with a 672 cubic inch Boss motor at the IHRA Fallnationals and qualified third with a 7.50/185.95. He lost to Rickie Smith in the semifinal. And while he didn't win at the Stroh's Nationals on October 6, he became the first Pro Stocker in the 7.30's with a 7.36/187.11 backed-up with a 7.39. |

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. Roy qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.685/181.81. A first-round 7.69/179.64 lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.63/176. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, running 7.770/177.69. After that, he didn't attend any other NHRA events until the World Finals, instead concentrating on the "big inch" match races and IHRA events. He was a 7.729/178.89 DNQ at the Pomona Finals, but was that in the Tempo or another car (possibly the Pennys’ Firenza out of Chicago)? |

Notes: Hill showed the world that he had the quickest Pro Stock car in the world when he showed up at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. Roy qualified #1 with a 7.233 (Low ET and new track record) at 191.48. He then ran 7.33/190 over Bob Olson and 7.32/189 to beat a tire-shaking Charlie Peppers. He fouled against Billy Ewing in the semifinal with a 7.31/192.30 (Top Speed). It was unfortunate, as Ewing advanced with a 7.44/186. At the second IHRA race of the year, the Bayou Nationals, he finished runner-up to Bob Glidden in an all-Ford final. At the IHRA Pro-Am, Roy qualified #2 with a 7.35/189.87 behind Bruce Allen's 7.34 in the Reher and Morrison car. In round one, Harold Robinson fouled against him, and a holeshot 7.55/187.11 beat Terry Adams' quicker 7.45/187 in round two, but he fouled against Rickie Smith again in the semis. He won MIR's Spring Mountain Motor Championships, stopping Smith in the final. He also set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.42/187. On June 1, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 7.49/188.20 qualified #3, but he fouled away a 7.57/184.42 against Olson in Gary Stewart's Firebird in the first round. At the IHRA Gateway Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 7.50/186.33. He made his way to the final by beating Jerry Yeoman, a breaking Allen, and by holeshotting Darrell Alderman with a 7.55/186 that beat Darrell's 7.49/191. In the final, he fouled again, only this time against Glidden. He needed to try as Glidden ran 7.39 compared to his 7.59. The next IHRA event was the Northern Nationals held at Milan Dragway on July 6. Hill's 7.45/193.54 qualified #6. His 7.50/189.87 advanced over a fouling Olson in the first round. Unfortunately, in round two, Hill fouled against Alderman. A 7.48/187.11 qualified Roy second at The IHRA Summernationals behind Glidden's 7.37/189. In the first round, he beat Ronny Smith, but his 7.57 lost to a holeshot aided 7.62 by Billy Ewing in round two. Thompson Dragway held their Independence Eve Championships, and Roy was there. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, while beating Alderman with a 7.65/191.48. In the semifinals, he fouled against Joe Lepone. The PHR Championships were held under IHRA rules. Hill qualified #12 with a 7.79/186.33, and in round one, his 7.60/180.36 advanced over a fouling Olson. His Topaz got out of shape in the second round, and his 7.67/187.50 lost to Smith's 7.48/183 Mustang. Hill won the next IHRA race, the World Nationals. He qualified #3 and ran a 7.47 in the first round, over Al Waters. In round two, a 7.45 stopped Jim Ruth's "Party Time" Firebird, and he made an easy pass in the semifinals when Alderman's Camaro broke. In the final, he got the victory with a holeshot over Smith. His 7.47/186.17 beat Smith's 7.43/185. He was in another IHRA final on September 7 at Rockingham for the US Open Championships. He qualified #6 and had made his way to the final by beating Walters, a tire-shaking Allen, and Alderman in the semifinals. In the final, he lost to Smith. The next day (September 8), Hill won the MIR Mountain Motor Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 7.40 and then ran a 7.34 (track record) at 189 to beat Mike Bazell. A 7.44/188 in round two took out Charlie Garrett's 7.69/179 and a 7.35/188 in the semis beat Bob Harris' Firebird. In the final, he was up against Carlton Phillips, driving Al Waters' Firebird. As stated, Roy won the race with a final round of 7.37/189 over Carlton's 7.51/183. At Piedmont, a 4.76/152.10 one-eighth mile track record was set. Bristol held the Hurst-sponsored Pro Stock shootout the day before (September 20) the IHRA Fallnationals. Roy fouled in the first round, against Ruth. The next day at the IHRA Fallnationals, he beat Alderman in the opening round before losing to eventual winner Glidden's 7.35 in round two with a 7.54. Notes: Roy Hill had a great year driving for Joe Penny in '87. He started his IHRA Campaign at the Winternationals, qualifying eighth with a 7.41/185. The car kept on running quicker. In round one, his 7.38/189 beat Bob Harris' 7.51/190. A second round 7.34/190 beat Jim Ruth's "Party Time" Firebird. In the semifinals, he ran his best of the weekend, a 7.30/191 to beat Billy Ewing's 7.43/191. That set up an all-Ford final against Rickie Smith. In the final, Roy's car was unable to stage as it kept creeping forward before fouling. Roy hesitated and then hammered it getting a strange 7.83 time at a speed of 194.80. Rickie won with a 7.17/191. At the Rockingham Pro-Am race, he qualified second with a 7.40/188.67, but he had problems in the first round, and his 8.01/187.11 lost to alternate Kenny Tripp's 7.93/173. Terry Adams' holeshot 7.53/190 beat Hill's quicker 7.44/188 in the semis at the Springnationals. At Atco for the Summernationals, he qualified with a 7.21/192. Hill ran 7.30/191 over Rickie Smith's quicker 7.26 in the semis before losing to Bob Glidden's 7.23 with a 7.27 in the final. Roy set Low ET at 7.25 and ran a career best speed of 196.07 at Milan for the Northern Nationals. He made it into the semifinals before his 7.31/192.30 lost to Smith's 7.28/193. But he won the next race, the World Nationals at Norwalk. There, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.31. A first-round 7.32/188 beat Smith while a round two 7.37/189.08 beat Glidden's out of shape machine. A 7.33/190.27 in the semifinals stopped Tim Nabors' 7.44/189 from advancing. In the final he faced Jerry Haas. Jerry fouled and Hill ran 7.32/189.87 for the victory. |

Notes: Roy Hill did not have an enjoyable start in '94. He was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he ran 7.08/199.60 early in qualifying. He came back out for another qualifying attempt. The car got out of shape and ended up flying 20 feet into the air, then barrel rolling down the track and over the guardrail. It was a pretty horrific wreck, but Hill was OK. In April, he was back on the IHRA tour for its second event of the season, the Dixie Nitrous Nationals at Carolina Dragway. It was a 1/8 mile track, and Roy's 4.49/159.77 qualified #3. The car was consistent, running 4.50/158.75 to beat Steve Spiess in the opening round and another 4.50 at 159.74 to beat Robert Patrick's 4.53/158 in round two. He slowed slightly to a 4.51/158.33 in the semifinal, but that was more than enough to beat Charlie Garrett's 4.67/153. He faced Floyd Cheek in an all-Ford final, and while Floyd qualified #1 with new track records of 4.47/161, he had slowed somewhat during eliminations to high 4.5s. Hill had a slight edge going into the final, but Cheek got out on him, and his 4.56/159 got the victory over Hill's slowest run of eliminations, a 4.55/158.25. It was a close race. His next stop was at Tulsa for its annual Springnationals race. A 6.88/199 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field, and a 6.93/200 beat Darrick Nykaza in the first round. In the second round, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline losing to Darrell Warren. In the first week of June, Hill was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Four Fords qualified for the field, and his 7.03/199.20 (Top Speed and just shy of his own 199.95 track record) was the second quickest of the blue oval bunch but #4 overall. In the opening round, his 7.09/197.54 dropped Jim Revis' 7.19/195. In the second round, eventual winner Robert Patrick strapped a slight holeshot on him, and his 7.12/194 beat Roy's 7.11/196.07. The Ford's were really starting to perform on IHRA's big-inch Pro Stock class, and it showed at Alabama where Hill's 6.88/202.61 (Top Speed and Low ET) qualified #1 for the IHRA Supernationals. There was no stopping him on this day. No other car ran a "six" during eliminations, and Hill's was running them with ease. A 6.90/201.02 in the first round beat Patrick's 7.06/194. In round two, he belted out a 6.98/191.32 over John Konigshofer's 7.07/196. Garett's 7.14/190 in the semifinal lost to the T-Bird's 6.94/199.82. In the final, he faced #2 qualifier Craig Hankinson, and Roy ran another 6.94 at 200.08 for the victory over Hankinson's 7.08/199. He totally dominated the Pro Stock program of the race. His next stop was at New York International in July for the IHRA Empire Nationals. His 7.04/197.93 was the second quickest of the six Fords that made the field and was #5 overall. A 7.10/197.10 in the first round defeated Tim Nabors' 7.12/198. In round two, he fouled away a great 6.95/199.82 against Harold Denton, who advanced with a 7.07/199. The following week (July 17), he was in Morocco, Indiana, at U.S. 41, for the IHRA Summernationals. Cheek qualified #1 at 6.87, but Hill was right behind at 6.90. Fords took three of the top four spots in qualifying. He easily got past the first two rounds. His 6.89/201.38 over a fouling Terry Leggett in round two was the Low ET of that round. But in the semifinal, he had problems and shut down in a loss to Billy Huff's 6.99/201. Twenty cars showed up at Virginia Motorsports Park in August, and Hill qualified #1 with a 6.84/202.11. He went on to win, stopping Patrick in the all-Ford final,6.89 to 6.95. He debuted yet another new Haas-built T-Bird at the Nebraska Motorplex in mid-August for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals. The first pass with the new car in qualifying was 7.09. He improved to 6.98/198.85 to qualify second to Patrick's 6.97/199. Once again, he was tough to beat, and no one did. In the first round, Nabors shut off with tire shake, and Hill ran 6.95/199.64 to advance. Jerry Yeoman fouled against him in round two, and Hill ran 6.94/199.86. Another 6.94 at 199.64 in the semifinal beat Huff's 6.96/199. He faced Patrick in the final, and the Mustang driver shut down due to tire shake while Roy reset the track record to 6.91 at 200.00 to take the victory. We need to confirm that the Dinwiddie 6.84 was the 6.849 we had listed already. Please confirm the third digit if you know it. |

Notes: Roy debuted his new Probe at the third race of the IHRA season, the President's Cup Championships at Maryland International. He qualified well, but in the first round, he lost to a holeshot by Steve Williford. Steve ran a 6.93 that beat Hill's quicker 6.90. Roy made up for the first-round loss by going out and winning the next race, the Springnationals at Bristol. He was running steady 7.0s with a second-round 7.03 over John Konigshofer and, in the semifinals, a 7.01 beat Robert Patrick. In the final, he ran Carlton Phillips, and a 6.99/198 got the victory over Phillips' 7.02/198. The next race went to Roy as well, the Empire Nationals at New York International. This time, his final round victim was Billy Huff. A 7.08 got the win over Huff's 7.18. His streak ended at the next IHRA race, the Summernationals, on July 9 at US 41 Morocco, Indiana. He qualified #1 with a 6.86 (Low ET) at 201.65, but in the first round, the Probe broke on the line, giving Jerry Yeoman a single into round two. Hill qualified second behind his hired driver, Mike Bell, at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. His 6.86/201.70 followed Bell's 6.86/201. Craig Hankinson fouled against him in the first round, and Roy's 6.90/199.95 advanced. In the second round, his 6.92/199.11 defeated John Montecalvo's 6.99/199. In the semifinal, both he and Doug Kirk ran 6.97 (Hill at 198), but Kirk got the win light. Hill got some revenge when his driver, Bell, beat Kirk in the final. |
