Notes: Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Holcomb had lots of problems at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and as a result, his best of 6.57/191.08 failed to make the field. He also failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals where his best of 5.91/244.56 failed to make the show. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, his best of 5.87/242.19 was good for the second alternate. He bettered that position by one at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Raceway near Baton Rouge. There his 5.91/182.40 best was the first alternate for the show. It wasn't until mid-June before he finally qualified for an NHRA event. It came at National Trail for the Springnationals where his 5.78/238.85 qualified #14. Richard lost to Joe Amato's 5.64/256 in the first round, with a sub-par 5.98/232.07. Holcomb qualified for the next NHRA race as well, the Grandnationals in Canada, where he ran 5.97/183.89 for the #13 spot. He improved to a 5.79/228.31 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as once again he lost to Amato at 5.54/256. The next event on the NHRA schedule was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Richard qualified #15 with a 5.63/242.45, but again he lost early. He got his best qualifying effort at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals where he ran 5.69/230.12 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, he slowed to a 5.93/222.44 in the first round, that lost to Larry Minor's 5.78/246. He failed to qualify at both the NHRA Northstar Nationals and the US Nationals where his 5.64/250.06 best was second alternate. Holcomb was third alternate at the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove with a best of 5.83/226.47.

Notes: Richard attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He was the first alternate, running a best of 5.86/232.55. He also attempted to make the field at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he was the third alternate with a 5.81/236.03. In the first week of July, he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and he failed to better the 5.64 "bump." A week later, he was an Englishtown and 20 other TF drivers attempting to qualify for the NHRA Summernationals. He ended up as the fourth alternate at 5.67/256.92. Holcomb was the first alternate at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.64/255.95. When Earl Whiting broke, he got into the field but lost to Eddie Hill in the first round. Indy had 30 cars show for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, and Richard qualified #15 with a 5.539/263.69. He had problems in the first round and shut down to 7.03/139.08, losing to Hill's 5.44/266.

Notes: Holcomb did not race at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Darlington in mid-March for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.45/260.86 beat Jack Ostrander. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semi-final and lost to Joe Amato. The following week, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.29/276.07 qualified #11. He lost to Frank Bradley in the opening round. Shortly after that, he was at DeSoto Dragway for the IHRA Supernationals. Holcomb's 5.43 in the first round beat Earl Whiting but his 5.46/252 in the semi-final lost to eventual winner Darrell Gwynn's 5.25/262. Richard was the third car in the four-second zone with a 4.998 at Dallas on October 15, 1988 (third entry in the Cragar 4 Second Club for Top Fuel). The car had a rear end SO narrow that the wing struts had to be mounted around the engine. It was an aerodynamics trick to move the HUGE rear slicks out of the wind. Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Richard didn't run at the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Houston for the Supernationals where he qualified #4 with a 5.02/273.30. He lost to Gary Ormsby in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. Holcomb was at Rockingham in April for the NHRA Winston Invitational race, but the track was damp after rain showers canceled qualifying. It was an eight-car show and all cars were given one shot to make the field. Richard's tire smoking 8.77/93.75 was the first alternate. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There he ran 5.24/259.66 to qualify #11. In the first round his 5.23/251.23 lost to Lori Johns' 5.15/275. In early May, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He qualified #15 with a 5.19/267.45. In the first round to lost to Hank Endres. On May 21 Holcomb was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified last in the eight-car field with a 5.40/245.31, but lost to low qualifier Gene Snow in the first round. The following week (May 28), he was at Baton Rouge's State Capitol Dragway for the NHRA Cajun Nationals where a 5.27 qualified #13 in the field. There he lost to Frank Bradley in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, Richard's best of 5.32/266.58 failed to qualify (sixth alternate). He qualified #1 at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals with a 5.273/263.16. A 5.308/260.12 beat #8 qualifier Paul Smith's 5.430/214.60 in the first round, and in the semifinals Richard advanced when Pat Dakin broke on the line with Holcomb running a 5.52/254.24. He faced Snow in the final and despite running a strong 5.336/263.16 he lost to Gene's 5.227/267.86. | He had not run a NHRA race since the Springnationals, but he went to Indy for the US Nationals where he qualified #14 with a 5.12/267.37. Unfortunately, he lost to Johns in the first round. A week later (September 10), Holcomb was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. Only six cars showed and his 5.38/260.30 qualified #4. But in the first round, his car broke giving opponent, Snow a free ride into the semis.

Notes: Holcomb did not race at the first two NHRA events of the year, but he was at Houston for the Supernationals. He ran a best of 5.164/255.68, but the "bump" was 5.13, and he was the fourth alternate. The following week (March 11), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. His 5.25/264.40 qualified #1 for the eight-car field, and he went on to win by running 5.35/263.25 in the opening round of eliminations over Mike Smith. A 5.29/266.30 defeated Fred Farndon in the semifinal. He faced Wayne Bailey in the final, and a strong 5.29/265.28 gave him the win. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.252/262.77 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round, his shut-off 12.66/77.12 lost to the eventual winner Darrell Gwynn's 4.98/280. He attempted to qualify for the eight-car show at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was the second alternate with a 5.27/261.17 best. Holcomb was at Bristol was the IHRA Springnationals at the end of May. Only eight cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, he belted out a 5.47/261.05 to qualify #5. Notes: Frank was driving Walt Barbin's car at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, an opening-round 6.67 lost to Junior Kaiser's 6.50. On the NHRA national event trail, Walt drove at Pomona but failed to qualify. Holden took over and was the second alternate at Gainesville at 6.260/234.37 and the #9 qualifier at Columbus at 6.205/220.04. He lost to Shirley Muldowney in round one, 6.07/228 to 6.532/200.89. Frank also ran 6.08/231.95 at IHRA Bristol Spring 1976. The team was the fifth alternate at Englishtown (no times available but slower than #4 alternate Ted Wolf, who ran 6.259). Barbin drove at Indy but was the third alternate. That was the team's last NHRA national event for the year.
