At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 9.80/142.85 qualified #18 in the 32-car show. He lost early in eliminations. Larry qualified #3 with a 9.58 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He worked his way to the final of the eight-car show, stopping a tough Bill Bagshaw in the semifinals. In the final, he ran Bob Lambeck and his 9.47 took the victory over Bob's 9.60. A week later (March 11), he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 9.37/145.86. Once again, he worked his way to the final, running a strong 9.26/147.28 in round two while beating Sonny Bryant's 9.38/144. In the semifinal, a 9.28 beat Larry Breaux's 9.35. In the final, he faced low qualifier Landy, who had set Low ET in round two with a 9.07. Huff tried hard in the final, but his 9.32/147.29 was no match for Dick's 9.12/150 and Larry had to settle for the runner-up spot. It was then back to OCIR for the final All-Pro race ran on March 24. Huff qualified #4 and in the opening round to beat Ken Van Cleave with a 9.36. A second round 9.28/146.34 beat Jim Baker, but he lost to Landy in the semifinals. He got another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace in April. There, his final round 9.88/142 lost to Bob Coleman's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet pass of 9.44/144. The Challenger was starting to get dated by 1973 standards, but he was still doing pretty well with it. On May 24 he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grand American held there. He qualified #5, but failed to reach the finals. In June he was at Denver's Century 21 Dragway for the AHRA Springnationals. Once again, he failed to make the finals after qualifying #4 with a 10.01. He went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals the following week (June 10). A 9.53 got the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car field, but a 9.71 in the first round, lost to Bob Riffle's 9.51. |

Notes: Qualified third at AHRA Fremont at 9.054/151.77 on 3/30/74. 8.99 at St. Louis 74. | Larry had one of the strongest Mopars in '74, even when running in NHRA competition with their 7.00 lbs per cubic inch weight break for Hemi powered cars. At the AHRA Winternationals, Larry qualified #10 with a 9.24. A first-round 9.25/149.75 lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.92/153. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he was one of three Mopars to qualify. His 9.22/149.25 put him in the #13 spot for the show. Once again he lost in the first round, this time Wally Booth's 9.09/150 stopped his 9.34/148.02. As mentioned above, he qualified #3 at the AHRA Northern Nationals where he lasted until the semifinals where his 9.07 lost to Bill Bagshaw's 8.93. On April 6 he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. Huff set Low ET at 8.96 in qualifying #1 and lasted until the final where he fouled away a 9.11/151.77 while Bagshaw motored to the victory with a 9.04/152. His next good showing came at Green Valley on May 8 where he qualified #1 with an 8.91 (Low ET). Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He won the next AHRA Grand American race at Dragway 42. Jenkins fouled against him in the final and Larry took the win with a 9.10/153.58. Another win came at Spokane where he won the AHRA Springnationals by stopping Pete Kost in the final with a 9.19/149.50. The next AHRA Grand American race was the Drag Nationals at Kansas City on July 7. Huff's 9.14/148.51 qualified #2 behind Jenkins' 9.04/150. These two would work their way to the finals. Larry beat Jerry Haas in the first round, with a 9.15 while in the semifinals a 9.18/148.76 advanced when Ronnie Sox fouled. Jenkins ran 9.05 twice to reach the finals against him. In the final, the Vega fell off to 9.09/149, but it was still more than enough to beat Huff's 9.26/148.76. He got back into the winner's circle at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There he set Low ET at 8.98 and in the final his 8.99/152.07 beat Warren Johnson's 9.10/152. The tables were reversed on August 25 at Tulsa for the AHRA American Challenge race. This time Johnson beat a fouling Huff in the final. Times were close with Warren's 9.22/150 getting the win over Larry's 9.21/149. |

Notes: Larry Huff's big Dodge was very competitive in match race trim. Early in July, he was at Fremont for a best of three match against Bill Bagshaw. The Funny Cars of Sush Matsubara and Dave Condit were there also for a best of three match. Condit had to swap motors in the "Plueger & Gyger" Mustang and could not make the first race of the match, so Huff went over to Joe Pisano, owner of Matsubara's ride and asked if they would race him with a 2-second handicap. After the snickering stopped, they agreed. The crowd was really up for the match, and Huff won, running 8.81/155.70 to beat Sush at 6.71/216.89. It was close as the Vega flew past in the traps. In the actual match with Bagshaw, Larry's 8.78/155.70 beat Bill's 8.82/154 in the first race, but Bill came back to win the second with an 8.83/156 over Huff's quicker 8.80/155.44. Larry took the win and the match race victory in the tie-breaker with an 8.87/155.70 to beat Bagshaw's 9.01/155. Later in the month, he faced Dick Landy in a best of three at OCIR. |

Notes: Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Runner-up to Scott Shafiroff at IHRA Bristol 6/75 with a best of 9.01/150.75. Also 9.03/153.58 at Indy 1975. And 151.26 at AHRA West Salem 75. | Newspaper from Ontario 10/12/75 cites Woodland Hills (LA) as the hometown. We need to confirm. | Huff had one of the quickest Pro Stock Mopars in '75. He started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he lasted until the semifinals before he fouled against Wally Booth. The NHRA weight breaks were unkind to the Hemi-powered cars, but Larry went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and ran 9.04/150.75 to qualify #9. He was the quickest Mopar in the field, but in qualifying where he did, he faced the low qualifier, Wayne Gapp, in the first round. Gapp's four-door Maverick was tough, and sure enough, Larry's 9.16/148.51 didn't stand a chance against Gapp's 8.81/154. He had to choose between going to the NHRA Gatornationals or the AHRA Grand American West at OCIR since they both ran on March 16. He must have been tempted to go to the NHRA race since NHRA issued new lighter weight breaks for the Hemi-powered cars, but Huff was the strip manager for OCIR, so he had to race at his own track. Only 13 cars showed for the sixteen-car Pro Stock field at OCIR, and Huff qualified #2 with an 8.95. He made his way to the semifinals with a best of 9.15/152.54 before losing to Gary Hansen. Shortly after this, Huff quit running OCIR, and the track sat idle until Bill Doner took over. He did find out just how well the Hemi ran with the new NHRA weight breaks at Seattle during the Northwest National Open. Larry qualified #1 with an 8.77/154.10. He then ran times of 8.83 and 8.91 to win the event. It was a strong showing for a Mopar under NHRA rules. On May 4, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Southwest Grand American. A 9.07/152.28 qualified #2 in the eight-car field, and he beat Warren Johnson in the semifinals with a 9.09. This put him into the final against Ken Dondero, driving one of Bill Jenkins' Vegas. Ken got the win with a 9.08/152 over Huff's runner-up 9.13/151.77. At the fourth AHRA Grand American race, the Grandnationals at Dragway 42, Huff again qualified #2 with an 8.86/155.17. Unfortunately, he was upset in the first round, by Booth's AMC. His next good showing came at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he ran 8.99 to qualify #4. He ran 9.01 and 9.08 twice to reach the final, where he faced Scott Shafiroff's wounded Mustang II. Scott's motor had been hurting for the last few rounds. In the final, Huff fouled, and Scott still ran 8.99/150 to win. At the NHRA Springnationals, Larry qualified #6 with a 9.03/150.25. He was the quickest of the four Mopars that made the field. Huff beat Dick Landy's 9.16 in the first round, with a 9.05, but in round two, he lost a close one to Richie Zul when both ran 9.07 (Huff at 150.25), but the Camaro got the win light. He won the NHRA Division 4 race at Oklahoma City. There he qualified #1 with a 9.14/148.02. An even better 9.11/148.51 beat Lynn Harrison's 9.35/144 in round one, and a semifinal 9.12/149 took out Fred Shafer's 9.23/144. He faced the AMC of Dave Kanners in the final, and Dave had just set Low ET with his semifinal 9.09. It was a good race with Huff getting out on Kanners and holding on to take a 9.18/147.29 victory over Dave's quicker and faster,9.12/148. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Once again, four Mopars qualified. Larry's 9.05/150.00 qualified #10. In the first round, his 9.15/130.05 lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.97/152. This was followed by a trip to Minnesota for the third NHRA Division 5 race. Larry's 9.24/146.57 was upset by Tom Haller's 9.17/146 in the opening round of competition. Early in August, he competed at the AHRA Drag Nationals held at Kansas City International. He lasted until the semifinals before his 9.12 lost to Johnson's 9.10. Huff had the quicker Mopar at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 9.05 got him the #10 spot in the field. That didn't do much, as Bill Jenkins' 8.90 in his new Monza stopped his 9.12 in the opening round. |

Notes: We need confirmation on these numbers. Were they run in 1976 or 1977? Confirmed 8.77 and 8.78 at 155.17 at Fremont WCS 3/76. Huff was running well at the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with an 8.82/153.06. In the opening round of competition, he beat Dale Falk with an 8.92/151.51. An 8.91/152.28 in round two dropped Gary Hansen's 9.05/148. It looked like he was on his way to winning his semifinal race against Tom Chelbana, but the Dodge broke at the halfway mark, and Tom advanced into the final with a 9.03. |
