Notes: Bill Jenkins sold Frank his first Lenco in 1973. Ran 9.26 at NED. Ran 9.443/145.80 DNQ at NHRA Englishtown and 9.47/147.05 DNQ at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73. Those were Frank's only two NHRA national events in 1973. Frank was at Suffolk in April for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 9.36 (Low ET), and in the first round, his 9.41 beat Carl Hobbs' 9.63 in the "Super Fats" Camaro. In the semifinals, he spun the tires against Dave Strickler and lost. Shortly after that, he was in Connecticut for another eight-car show. It was an interesting day for Frank, as he fouled away a 9.67 against Bob Judd in the first round, but returned to the show on the "break rule." He fouled again in the semifinals with a 9.46 going to waste against Charlie Castaldo's 10.16. But Charlie's Mopar broke, so Iaconio found himself in the final against Richie Zul's big-block Camaro. Now Frank was a little gun shy after fouling twice. His late 9.44/146.57 finished runner-up to Zul's 9.50/144. In May, he went to Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic race. Once again, it was an eight-car field, and Iaconio qualified #5, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Carman Rotonda. It was no contest, as Frank ailing Vega lost to Rotonda's similar car at 9.30/142. He was back in Connecticut for its Memorial Day Championships, where he finished runner-up to Frank Russo's 9.46/146 with a 9.50/140.18. He was at Englishtown for an eight-car show in mid-June, but his opening round 9.48/146.57 lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.42/146. Almost 50 cars attempted to qualify for the 32-car field at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals; Frank's 9.44 got him the #28 spot in the show. |

Notes: Frank Iaconio and Ray Allen debuted their new Monza at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Ray was supposed to drive, but did not have his license renewed. So, Frank drove and continued to drive. He qualified #15 at 9.003/151.77, and in the opening round, his 8.985/152.26 lost to Richie Zul's 8.929/152.54. It didn't take long before the car became a contender. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, an 8.814/153.58 qualified #6. Frank ran 8.804/152.02 to beat Bob Ingles at 8.88/151 in round one. He ran 8.821/153.06 to beat Roy Hill's 8.90/152 in round two. Frank’s best run came next with an 8.791/154.10 over Joe Satmary's 8.86/152 in the semifinals. He faced the AMC Hornet of Wally Booth in the final. Booth's winning semifinal ET was 8.69, so Frank took a chance on the 'tree. He fouled away an 8.815/145.86 while Booth picked up the victory with an 8.68/155. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Englishtown 77 runner-up to Larry Lombardo. | Team earned three runner-up finishes and a fourth place in points in the team's first full season. - CompetitionPlus.com. | Ran 8.84 at Gainesville, 8.74 at Columbus, 8.68 at Englishtown, 8.75 at Indy, and 8.59 (twice) at Seattle. | Frank got harder and harder to beat as the season progressed. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he lost to Wally Booth in the second round. He qualified #3 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with an 8.67/156.25. The race was postponed due to rain, and some cars didn't return for the rain date, so Iaconio got the first-round solo and ran 8.79/153.58. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden. He made it into the final at NHRA's next event, the Springnationals, where he qualified #6 with an 8.74. He beat Bob Gardner in round one, and in round two, his 8.76 beat Larry Lombardo's 8.81 in Bill Jenkins' Monza. In the semifinals, he beat Joe Satmary's big-block Camaro. This set up a final-round meeting with Don Nicholson. It was a good race, but "Dyno's" 8.78/153 won over Frank's 8.80/153.30. He was runner-up at the next NHRA race as well, the Summernationals at Englishtown. An 8.70/155.70 qualified #4. Don Campanello fouled against him in the first round, and Frank advanced with an 8.71/155. An 8.75 in round two beat Ronnie Manchester, while a quick-leaving 8.75/155 in the semifinals beat Nicholson's quicker 8.67. He faced Lombardo in the final, and both ran 8.68 (Iaconio at 156.52), but Larry got the win. A week later (July 16), he won the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at York US 30. It was an eight-car show and a final round 8.73/156 beat Manchester's 8.92/152. Another week later, he was runner-up to Lombardo at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove. He also ran 8.65/156 in a match race with Bobby Yowell at Suffolk in September. Frank was running legal weight and lost three straight. |

Also 8.666/155.44 at Pomona Winters 2/78 (#3 qualifier), and 8.60 at Gainesville. | Frank Iaconio started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.91/151 qualified #3. He beat Tom Chelbana in round one, before losing a close race in the semifinals that saw his 8.94/151.51 fall to Sonny Bryant's 8.94/153. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 8.66/155.44 qualified #3, and an opening-round 8.68/157 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.92/153. In round two, his 8.72/154 stopped Chelbana's 9.00/146, but a semifinal 8.73/157.34 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.69/154. Frank won his first NHRA National event at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #2 with an 8.60/157.61 behind Glidden's 8.54/153. In the first round, his 8.66/155 beat Mark Yuill's 8.80/154. An 8.67/155 in round two took out AMC's lone hope in the field, Wally Booth, at 8.70/154. He ran Larry Lombardo driving Bill Jenkins similar SRD-built Monza in the semifinals, and Frank's 8.68/155 prevailed over Lombardo's 8.70/155. He was up against Glidden in the final, and Bob had been running about a tenth faster all through eliminations. Smart money was on the Pinto to win, but Bob fouled away an 8.58/159 while Frank eased it through with a 9.06/123.45 to pick up the money. Frank was runner-up to Lombardo at the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown when the Monza broke on the line in the final. He repeated that finish at the next Division 1 race held at Cayuga. His 8.61/157.61 finished second best to Larry's 8.59/157. He didn't run as well as he would have liked at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.75/155.17 only qualified #9, and it set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Warren Johnson. Warren was over a tenth quicker (8.63) in qualifying, so Iaconio took a chance and fouled. He had to try as he still ran 8.87 while Johnson advanced with an 8.74. He was also runner-up to Lombardo at the Division 1 race at Maryland, where Larry's 8.61/156 topped his 8.68/155.70 in the final. An 8.64/156.52 qualified #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and an opening-round 8.68/156.52 advanced. But in round two, he slowed to 8.71/156.25 and lost to Joe Satmary's 8.65/157. Frank's next stop was back at Maryland for the US Pro Stock Open. Unfortunately, there he lost in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran 8.66 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. Frank got a great light in the first round, that saw his 8.77/153.58 hold off Ronnie Manchester's quicker 8.72/154, but, in the semifinals, his 8.73/154.63 lost to eventual winner Glidden's 8.55/149 in his new "boxcar" Fairmont. |

Notes: Frank won the 1979 NHRA Fallnationals on an 8.49/157.06 to 8.47 holeshot over Bob Glidden in the quickest Pro Stock race ever at the time. - CompetitionPlus. Also, it ran 160.14. | This is the year that Frank Iaconio broke out as the quickest of the Chevy Pro Stock contingent. He didn't run at Pomona, but at the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with an 8.58/157.34. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Yuill's 8.76/153 in the first round, with an off-pace 8.83/146.10. He then won the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown, stopping Larry Lombardo in the final. Frank also didn't run at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 again at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.68/155.70, and he beat Ronnie Sox with an 8.77/153.84, and an 8.79/154.10 in round two beat Kevin Rotty before fouling away an 8.84/150.25 against eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.66/157 in the semifinals. Another NHRA Division 1 race win came on June 24 at Maryland International. Once again, he faced Lombardo in the final, and Frank's 8.64/154.63 got a close victory over Lombardo's 8.65/156. He skipped going to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. On July 8, Iaconio went to Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race and came away with another win, stopping "Dyno" Don Nicholson in the final. The following week (July 15), things went really well for Frank at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He picked up his second career NHRA Pro Stock title. He qualified #2 behind Glidden, and these two would work their way to the final. Frank started by beating Sox with an 8.62. His 8.58 took out Lee Shepherd in round two, and a semifinal 8.61 beat Wally Booth. He had Bob concerned enough in the final that Bob fouled, and Iaconio ran 8.60/156.52 for the victory. Nicholson stopped Iaconio in the final at Maryland International's US Pro Stock Open, but Frank was strong there, running low 8.7's. He then traveled up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 8.57/157.34 qualified #2 behind that Arrow from Whiteland, Indiana. It would come down to another final round showdown between these two. Frank had run 8.60 and 8.48 to beat Ronnie Manchester and Lombardo to reach the final. Glidden had lane choice with an 8.46 in his semifinal win. Frank ran a good 8.53, but it wasn't enough as Glidden won with an 8.47. He took some comfort by winning the fourth NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove shortly after that. He beat surprise finalist Larry Sengstack. He also won the final Division 1 race held in New England. There he also set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.64/155.97. His next stop was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Frank's 8.58/160.42 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Glidden's 8.58/158. In the opening round of eliminations, he beat Booth. But in round two, he was upset by Lombardo. Larry's 8.67 beat his slightly quicker 8.66. That was a tough loss for Iaconio. He made up for it at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Once again, he qualified #2 with his 8.48/157.89 following Bob's 8.46/159. A first-round 8.54/151.00 stopped Lee Hunter, and in the second round, his 8.52/156.79 beat Lee Shepherd's 8.64/155. In the semifinals, he quickened his pace to 8.48/157.06 to put Joe Satmary's 8.68/154 Camaro on the trailer. Glidden had run just a tick quicker in his semifinal race, an 8.47/157. So the final was close. And was it ever! Frank got out ever so slightly on the Mopar, and his 8.49/157.06 held on for the victory over Bob's closing in 8.47/158. |

Notes: Also 8.47/159 at 1980 Cajuns. If it weren't for Bob Glidden and Lee Shepherd's dominant performance, Frank would have easily been the 1980 Pro Stock World Champion. He still ran really well but was just a tick behind the performances of those two. He started the NHRA tour by qualifying third with an 8.51/161.57 at the Winternationals and lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against Kevin Rotty. Frank ran well at the Gatornationals, where he qualified #6. He beat Lee Edwards in the first round, with an 8.52, but he fouled against Shepherd. He stopped off at Capitol Raceway for the Spring Pro Stock Championships. Fourteen cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. Frank set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.54/161.00. A first-round 8.57/159.81 beat Jim Cook's 8.89. Another 8.54 at 157.98 beat Larry Lombardo in the semifinals. He was to face Carlton Phillips in the final, but it was rained out. The next NHRA national event was the Cajun Nationals on April 27. It was only an eight-car show, and Iaconio qualified #2 with an 8.46/161.21. (Top Speed). An opening round 8.50/157.61 beat Jim Kinnett's 8.67/157. In the semifinal, he stopped Bill Jenkins with an 8.47/159. In the final, he met Shepherd. A quicker run of 8.55/145.86 lost to Lee's 8.60/159. He won the Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 4. Frank qualified #1 with an 8.55/158.73 and then ran 8.58/157.34 to beat Bob Ingles' 8.75/155. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with an 8.51/158.73 over "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.73/155. A final round 8.53/153.45 beat Jenkins' 8.73/157. He then went to Richmond for an eight-car show. Ingles' 8.73 fell to Frank's 8.55 in the first round, but in the semifinals, his Camaro broke and slowed to 9.01 against eventual winner Lombardo's 8.64. Frank qualified #3 with an 8.63/156.79 at the NHRA Springnationals. He beat Brad Yuill and Jenkins in the first two rounds before losing to Glidden's 8.53/154 in the semifinals with an 8.60/156.52. I'm not sure if he failed to qualify or just skipped running the Mile High Nationals, but he wasn't in the field. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, he qualified #3 again, behind those "other two guys" with an 8.52/157.61. He beat Johnny Downey with an 8.56/157.69, and in the second round, another 8.56/157.89 beat Andy Mannarino. In the semi's, Glidden ran an 8.50/158 to trailer the Camaro's 8.60/157.06. Frank won the Division 1 race at Maple Grove, setting Low ET at 8.57 and beating Jenkins again in the final with an 8.58/156.52, dropping the "Grump's" 8.77/153. Jenkins returned the favor at the Division 1 race at Maryland, where Bill beat Frank in the final. The NHRA tour traveled up to Canada for the Grandnationals, where an 8.59/157.06 qualified #3 in the eight-car show. He beat Alban Gauthier in the first round, with an 8.63/156.52, but a semifinal run of 8.60/157.61 failed to win against Shepherd's 8.41/158. At the Division 1 final at New England on August 17, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.53/157.61 in qualifying #1. A first-round 8.60/157.61 advanced when Jenkins fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.57/157.06 beat Doug Noblet. A final round 8.58/157.61 beat Ingles' 8.79/150. He took his customary third spot in qualifying with an 8.52/160.71 at the US Nationals. Again he ran well until he met up with Glidden in the semifinal, and a good 8.53/160.42 lost to Bob's 8.46/160. At Seattle for the Fallnationals, Lee didn't run as well as he normally did, and as a result, Frank's 8.45/159.01 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 8.35. Frank worked his way through the field until he met up with Shepherd in the semifinal and fouled out, giving Lee a free ride into the final. At the World Finals, he was back in #3 in qualifying with an 8.56/159.01, but this time, he made it into the final against Glidden. A final round 8.56/159.29, lost to a championship-hungry Glidden who won with an 8.42/159.85. |

Notes: Frank and Ray Allen parted ways when Ray went to drive for Bill Jenkins. Frank raced on his own and won two national events. Also 161.29 at Sanair 8/81. | Frank continued to chase Bob Glidden and Lee Shepherd in '81 just as he had in '80. If one of those two slipped, he was quick to capitalize on it. He started the season by qualifying #3 behind those two at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.50/159.57. He made it into the semifinals before losing to Glidden. Things went much more in Iaconio's way at the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he qualified #3 behind Bob and Lee with an 8.39/161.29. Another 8.39/157.34 beat Roy Hill's Mopar in round one, while in the second round, he beat Don Nicholson with an 8.41/161.29. Frank got one back on Glidden in the semifinals when Bob got out of shape and shut down while Frank moved into the final with another 8.41/161.29. It wasn't Shepherd he had to race in the final; it was Pat Musi, who had beaten Shepherd in his semifinal race. Iaconio won his fourth NHRA National event with an 8.39/161.29 when Musi fouled against him. He had another good run at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. An 8.41/160.71 (Top Speed) qualified #2 in the eight-car field between Lee's 8.40 and Bob's 8.44. He ran 8.53 to beat Mark Yuill in the first round, and in the semifinals, another 8.53/158.17 beat Nicholson. He faced Shepherd in the final, and his 8.55/157.89 finished second best to Lee's 8.48/159. Still, a win and a runner-up in the first three NHRA events was pretty good. It got better when he won the NHRA Eastern Regional at Englishtown on May 3. In the final, he set a new NHRA speed record when his 8.39/164.57 beat Andy Mannarino's 8.48/159 for the victory. Another win came at Cayuga for the second NHRA Eastern Regional on May 17. There, his final round 8.45 (Low ET) at 160.14 beat Alban Gauthier's 8.62/158. Earlier he had also set Top Speed at 160.42. A week later (May 24), Frank was at the State Capitol for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Shepherd, and in the first round, he beat Bob Ingles, but in the semifinals, both he and Mannarino ran 8.57, with Andy getting the win light. At the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.58/158.45 qualified #3, and he improved to 8.55/158.17 in the first round, over a fouling Don Coonce. In round two, his 8.56/158.45 beat Yuill. He faced Shepherd in the semifinals, and his 8.56/158.17 lost to Lee's 8.53/158. |

Notes: First backed up 500-inch National record at 7.822 at the 82 Winternationals, which he won over Lee Shepherd. Qualified #2 there, 7.87/174.41. Won Indy 82 with a 7.803 to 7.809 against Bob Glidden's EXP, after qualifying 4th at 7.790/174.75. | As mentioned, Frank started the '82 season by setting the NHRA record and winning the first 500 cubic inch NHRA race at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.87/174.41 behind Shepherd's 7.84. Frank picked up to his 7.82 in the first round, with a speed of 173.41 to beat Jerry Eckman's 8.06/168. In round two, his 7.84/171.75 took out Jerry Janke and a semifinal 7.86/173.41 beat Rickie Smith's 7.95/172, setting up a Shepherd vs. Iaconio final. Both had been the only cars running 7.8s in eliminations. Lee's semifinal 7.84 gave him lane choice, but he fell off to 8.02/156 in the final while Frank got the victory with a 7.83/174.08. The battle between these two moved on to the NHRA Gatornationals where Frank's 7.83/174.75 again qualified #2 behind Lee's 7.77. In the first round, both ran 7.8s with Iaconio's 7.89/173.41 beating Mark Yuill. A second-round 7.90/173.74 beat Joe Anderson and in the semifinals, his 7.90/173.07 got him into the final against Shepherd. The two Camaros had a close race, but Lee's 7.88/174 got the win over Frank's 7.89/172.74. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Southern Nationals. Of course, the two Camaro's qualified one-two, but this time Iaconio led the pack with a 7.82/174.08. But he was upset in the first round, by Bob Glidden who qualified #5 in the eight-car field. Lee went on to win the race. Both Shepherd and Iaconio took their 500 cubic inch cars to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals to test how their cars would do against the mountain motored cars. They did pretty well as once again the two Camaros met in the final. It was another close race, but Shepherd's 7.89 got the victory over Iaconio's 7.92. By this time, Frank must have been getting sick of a certain white Camaro from Texas, but he kept on running into it in the finals. It happened again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Frank's 7.88 qualified #2 behind you-know-who's Camaro at 7.81. An 8.04 in round one, beat Jim Meyer's surprising Mopar while a 7.94/173 beat Warren Johnson's Starfire in the semifinals. Lee and Frank lined up and once again Lee grabbed the victory with a 7.90/173 over Frank's 7.93/173. Things went a little different as Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Frank's best of 7.84/173.74 in qualifying slipped to the #3 spot in the field. This was due to Glidden slipping his little EXP into second behind Shepherd in the qualifying order. What this ended up doing was setting up a Shepherd vs. Iaconio match in the semifinals rather than the final. Lee caught a great light and his 7.96/173 held on to win over Frank's quicker 7.93/172.41. At least Glidden stopped Shepherd in the final, which was good for Iaconio as far as the points went. He grabbed a win at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove near the end of June. He beat Don Campanello and Bob Ingles to reach the finals with times of 7.96/170.77 and 7.94/171.10. In the final, he faced Andy Mannarino and his 8.02/171.10 took home the trophy over Andy's 8.12/170. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals early in July. He qualified #3 and lasted until the semifinals before losing to Shepherd. He slipped to the #5 (7.93) spot in qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. An opening round 7.95 beat Dave Hutchens' 8.01, but he lined up against Shepherd in round two and he attempted to gain an advantage on the 'tree and fouled. After that, Frank was at Atco for a mid-week Pro Stock race. He was performing really well, running 7.75 twice and a 7.77 at 178. Unfortunately, he lost to Warren Johnson in the final. Frank then won Indy, over a great field of cars. His best times came at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals at Fremont, where he ran 7.747 at 176.12. |

Notes: Frank came close to winning the 1983 NHRA Pro Stock championship but lost to a controversial run at the World Finals. After qualifying number one at 7.650, the points leader was upset by Reid Whisnant in round one. Whisnant clocked a stunning 7.620, the quickest run ever by a Pro Stocker in NHRA competition, after running 7.80s all year. | Frank won the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #2 with a 7.83. A 7.80/175.43 beat Mark Yuill in the first round, while a 7.79 (Low ET and a new track record) at 175.43 beat Rickie Smith's 7.96/173. He slowed to a 7.83 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Whisnant's 8.05. He ran low qualifier Bob Glidden in his new T-Bird in the final. Iaconio won with a 7.81/175.78 over Glidden's off pace 7.99/174. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 7.71/180.00. Once again, he worked his way to the final by first beating Bubba Corzine with a 7.69 and then Don Campanello with an even better 7.67. He stayed tough in the semifinals, beating Smith with a 7.68. That set up a final-round meeting with Lee Shepherd's low qualifying Camaro. Lee had run as well as 7.64 during eliminations, and that might have been on Frankie's mind in the final, as he bulbed with a 7.75/180.36 while Lee scored the victory with a 7.68/180. In April, Atlanta hosted the NHRA Southern Nationals, and Frank headed the Pro Stock show with a 7.80/178.92 (Low ET and Top Speed). He got out of shape and lost to Whisnant in round two. On May 1, Maple Grove held its US Manufacturer's Pro Stock Championships. Iaconio set the meet's Low ET at a new track record 7.80, and he also had Top Speed at 178.51. Unfortunately, in round two, he got out of shape and shut off to an 8.08/159.57 that lost to Bob Ingle's 7.97/171. He had another runner-up finish to Shepherd at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Warren Johnson before losing to Lee in the final. The next NHRA race was the Springnationals in mid-June. Frank qualified #3 with a 7.79/177.16. Again, he worked his way to the final by running 7.85, 7.84, and 7.83 over Sam Gianino, Joe Lepone Jr., and Don Coonce in that order before meeting Glidden in the final. It was a rematch of the Winternationals final, only this time Bob's 7.79/178 prevailed over Iaconio's 7.83/174.08. Another runner-up finish came in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 behind Glidden and worked his way to the final, fouling against Shepherd. Frank always ran well at the NHRA Summernationals, and '83 was no exception. He set a new track record 7.73 while qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 178.92. In the first round, he beat Lepone's 7.89/175 with a 7.76/178.21. In the second round, he ran identical times to beat Johnson's Cutlass at 7.78/178. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.80/177.51, but it easily covered Butch Leal's 8.02. It was Frank against Lee in the final, and this time Shepherd must have felt that Iaconio had the upper hand as he fouled away a 7.78 while Frank motored to a 7.85/177.16 for the win. He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, but he was at Martin, Michigan's US 131 for the PHR Championships. He set Low ET while qualifying #1 for the eight-car show with a 7.65 at 180.72. He made his way to the final, where he faced #2 qualifier Johnson. Warren knew Frank was tough, so he pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled. Iaconio won with a 7.72/183.29 (Top Speed). He found himself in another final round at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Shepherd's 7.74 with a 7.76/178.57. A 7.84 in round one beat Roy Hill's Capri. In round two, his 7.87/176 dropped Don Campanello, while a holeshot 7.88/175 beat a quicker WJ at 7.83. But in the final, it was Frank who lost to a holeshot by Glidden. Bob's 7.87/176 beat Frank's quicker 7.85/176.81. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the US Nationals at Indy. Iaconio ran 7.75/178.57 to qualify third behind Glidden and Shepherd. In the opening round, he improved to 7.74/181.81 to defeat Andy Mannarino's 7.92/176. He stopped Smith's 7.81/176 in round two with a 7.77/177.86 before losing a tight battle with Glidden in the semifinal that saw both drivers run 7.74 (Iaconio at 177). Notes: Frank was out to improve on his NHRA standings. He had finished second behind Lee Shepherd for the last two seasons and was determined to do better in 1984. The season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Frank had won the event the previous two years. Things went pretty well; although he had "only" qualified #5 with a 7.73, he reached the final. He had beaten Nick Nikolis, Butch Leal, and a fouling Warren Johnson to earn the right to face Shepherd in the final. It was always a good race between these two and their semifinals times were 7.77 and 7.78, with Iaconio having the quicker ET of the two. But while both picked it up in the final, Lee picked up more. His 7.71/178 got him the victory over Frank's 7.76/174.41. The NHRA Gatornationals had 46 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. A 7.67/182.18 qualified #5. His opening round, 7.71/180.72, beat Ronnie Manchester's 7.84/178. In round two, he got some revenge on Shepherd by beating his 7.77/179 with a 7.71/176.47. In the semifinals, Frank ran 7.75/179.00 to drop Don Coonce at 7.77/180. This time he faced Johnson in the final. Once again, both had run similar times in the semifinals as Warren had advanced with a 7.74. But in the final, WJ really stepped it up, running 7.64/180 for the victory over Iaconio's 7.73/180.00. Still, two runner-up finishes gave Frank the points lead. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Frank qualified well, running 7.73/179.28 for the #2 spot behind WJ's 7.70/181, but Frank's off-pace 7.93 in the first round, lost to Manchester's 7.82. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 7.75/181.45 qualified #6 and a 7.83/180 advanced past a fouling Jeff Velde in the opening round. In round two, Don Coonce broke on the line against him, and Frank ran 7.82/176.81. But he lost to Leal in the semifinal. Best 1984 NHRA national event times were 7.677 at Gainesville and 182.92 (Top Speed) at Indy. |

Notes: Frank joined a Kenny Bernstein-led Budweiser super team. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. | Frank was known for running Chevys since the late '60s. He had done very well with the bow-ties, finishing second in NHRA Pro Stock standings for three years. He had won 10 NHRA national events and 19 runners-up. So, it was very strange to see him in a Ford for '85. Kenny Bernstein first approached Iaconio at the '84 Cajun Nationals about joining his Budweiser-Motorcraft Ford team for '85. Arlen Fadely had also approached Frank to run an Olds for the '85 season. Near the end of '84, Frank decided to join the Ford team. He had run Don Ness cars for several years, so of course, Ness was contracted to build the T-Bird. It was Ness' first Pro Stock Ford. The car failed tech inspection at its debut at Pomona for the Winternationals. Don Ness fixed the roll cage issue on the spot, but Frank's 7.78 best (third alternate) missed the show when qualifying ended. Things went much better at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. He qualified #5 with a 7.70/182.11. In the first round, Sam Gianino fouled against him. In round two, his 7.71/183.00 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.55/184. At the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, he again qualified #5 with a 7.75/179.06. He faced a poorly qualified (#13) Glidden in the first round. Iaconio had problems and shut off to a 12.31 that lost to Bob's 7.93. Glidden got Frank again at the next event, the Cajun Nationals. It took Iaconio four attempts to qualify. He shut down in the first three passes, but a 7.73/179.28 on the fourth pass qualified #9. In the first round, he ran 7.75/175.09 to beat low qualifier Bruce Allen in Reher-Morrison Camaro, who shut off to 8.50. In round two, his 7.78/178.92 advanced when Gordie Rivera got out of shape and shut off to 8.17/135. The semifinals saw his 7.73/179.06 fall to Glidden's 7.68/182. Frank got another semifinal finish at the next race, the Springnationals. A 7.66/180.94 qualified #4, and a first-round 7.73/179.49 beat Ron Manchester. A 7.74/178.92 in round two beat Jerry Eckman and advanced him into the semis to meet Allen. Allen's 7.68/176 beat his 7.74/178.42. The next stop on the NHRA trail was in Canada for the Grandnationals. Frank qualified #3 with a strong 7.55/183.89. An off-pace 7.71/171.36 in the first round, lost to Don Campanello's 7.68/180. At the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #5 at 7.62/184.65, but fouled against Frank Sanchez in the first round. Budds Creek held its annual Pro Stock Open race, and Frank lasted until the semifinal before losing to eventual winner Roy Hill. It was then off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Frank's 8.08/170.13 qualified #6, and in the opening round, his 8.09/170.77 beat Hill's 8.24/168. He ran his best time of the weekend, an 8.05/171.10, in round two, but it wasn't enough to get past Warren Johnson's 8.01/172. NHRA's next race was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Frank qualified #10 with a 7.76/179.28. He improved to 7.68/180.72 in the first round, but lost to Allen's Low ET charge of 7.55/181. Iaconio had racked up enough points over the past 12 months to qualify for one of the eight spots available for the NHRA Pro Stock Challenge race held at Indianapolis in conjunction with the US Nationals. In the Challenge race, he lost to Butch Leal's 7.68/180 with a 7.72/182.26. He did pretty well at the US Nats. There, 45 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and his 7.69/182.26 qualified #8. Ken Dondero fouled against him in round one, and Frank's 7.75/179.49 advanced. In round two, he fell to a holeshot by Tony Christian. Tony's 7.76/177 beat his quicker 7.72/179.76. He was closer to home when NHRA stopped at Maple Grove on September 15 for the Keystone Nationals. Frank's 7.59/181.08 qualified #6, and a 7.64/179.49 got around Rivera's broken Camaro. In round two, his 7.68/180.07 lost to Johnson's 7.58/182. Best NHRA national event times were 7.556 at Sanair and 184.65 at Englishtown. |

Notes: Frank was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 6. It surprised a lot of people when he showed, as he had not competed at an IHRA event for quite some time. He made a timed run of 7.43/191.08 before qualifying #7 with a 7.47/191.80. He then went 7.46/191.48 in the second round to beat Bruce Allen, who had his Camaro break at half-track. Iaconio debuted the car at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where he was the fourth alternate at 7.573/183.78. Notes: Frank started the season by qualifying #4 at the Winternationals with a 7.36/187.81. A first-round 7.40/186.79 beat Don Coonce's 7.42/186. In the second round, he beat Kenny Delco's 7. 43/186 with a 7.36/187.57. In the semifinals, a 7.39/185.83 beat an off pace Morris Johnson Jr. In the final, Iaconio stayed consistent with a 7.37/186.79, but he lost to Bob Glidden's 7.29/188. At the next NHRA race, the Supernationals, Frank qualified #10 and once again Glidden got him. Only this time Bob beat him in the first round. At the Gatornationals, a 7.35/187.53 qualified #4. He beat Larry Morgan in the first round, with a 7.36, and a 7.42/186 beat Butch Leal in round two. He showed his driving skill in the semifinal when he beat Bruce Allen's 7.36 with a quicker-leaving 7.39/186. He was in the final again in two out of the three NHRA events run in '89. This time, he met the Dodge of Darrell Alderman in the final and despite a quicker 7.38/186.72 he lost to Alderman's 7.39/186. The next event on the schedule was the Southern Nationals on April 23. Iaconio's 7.39/185.95 qualified #7 and he was upset in the first round, by Delco. Another first-round loss came at the Mid-South Nationals. He had barely qualified with a 7.40/187.30 giving him the #15 spot. Don Beverley dealt him his loss. The Cajun Nationals was the next stop on the tour and a 7.47/184.95 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. He met top qualifier Bruce Allen in the first round, and lost. Frank's luck changed somewhat at the Springnationals. He qualified #6 with a 7.39/185.45. He beat Delco in the first round, before losing to Allen's Beretta in round two. The NHRA tour headed to Canada for the Grandnational Molson event on June 25. Frank again qualified in the top half of the field with a 7.40/185.72 holding down #5 spot. He beat Joe Folgore in the first round, with a 7.45/184.42. A 7.48/185.07 got past a fouling Glidden in round two and a semifinal 7.43/184.42 beat Rickie Smith's 7.51/182. Unfortunately, he ran Allen in the Reher-Morrison car in the final, which had been beating him quite a bit lately. Allen did it again with a 7.37/185 beating Frank's 7.43/185.07. The ninth race of the season saw the tour at Englishtown for the Summernationals, a race where Iaconio always runs well. He qualified #11 with a 7.41/186.95. Even though he had won this race on a number of occasions, this time, he was dealt a first-round loss by Beverley. In the thin air of Denver, Frank ran a 7.90/173.77 to qualify #10 at the Mile High Nationals. He lost again in the first round; this time, Larry Morgan got him. At the eleventh race of the season, the California Nationals, a 7.39/187.69 qualified #13. A trend was developing with Leal running a 7.38 in the first round, that dropped Frank's 7.41/187.30. From there it was off to Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Iaconio's 7.37/186.76 qualified #6. A first-round 7.41/186.02 lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.44/185. Thing went much better at the Northstar Nationals where Frank used a 7.47/184.31 to qualify #7. He beat Jerry Haas in the first round, and a 7.50/184.50 beat Leal's slightly quicker 7.49/184 in the second round. In the semifinals, Iaconio fouled to Glidden, but it was still a shot in the arm by making the semi's after a streak of first-round losses. Unfortunately, it didn't last, as at the US Nationals, he lost to Glidden's 7.40/186 in the first round, with a 7.43/185.64. Frank qualified #10 for the race with a 7.39/185.91. The NHRA tour's next stop was at Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. A 7.36/186.48 qualified #7 there and a first-round 7.38/186.10 beat Ismael Pastrana's 7.42/185. He ran a consistent 7.39/186.21 in round two, but lost to Alderman's 7.38/186. After running so well and qualifying at all the races it was somewhat surprising that he failed to qualify at the Chief Nationals and the Fallnationals. He got it back together for the season-ending World Finals where he ran a 7.40/186.76 to qualify #15. He beat Delco in the first round, before losing to WJ's 7.38/187 with a 7.41/186.68. He ended the season sixth in the NHRA Pro Stock points chase. |

In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.39/188.00 lost to Larry Morgan's 7.38/187. He barely made the field at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he qualified #15. In the first round, his 7.38/187.18 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.30/189. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals at Houston, and once again, Frank qualified #15, and once again, he lost in the opening round. This time he lost to the eventual winner Darrell Alderman. Gainesville was the next stop on the calendar for the Gatornationals. Iaconio continued to qualify, but just. There, he was #14. He and Jerry Eckman had a close first-round race that saw Eckman's 7.35/187 beat his 7.35/187.30. He also qualified #14 at the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.37/187.11. This time eventual winner Bob Glidden, beat him in round one. |

Notes: Frank qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.26/189.63. He lost to Bruce Allen in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he ran 7.29/188.71 to qualify #9. In the first round, he improved to a 7.26/189.75 to beat Bob Glidden's 7.34/189. He lost to Jerry Eckman in the second round when he fouled away a 7.33/188.44. He was disappointed at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals when his best of 7.27/188.83 failed to qualify (second alternate). At the NHRA Gatornationals, he just made the field, running 7.23/190.83 for the "bump" spot. In the first round, a 7.21/190.71 lost to low qualifier Scott Geoffrion's 7.16/192. He was at Rockingham in April for the NHRA Winston Invitational. He qualified #14 with a 7.28/189.83, but he again lost in the first round, this time to Warren Johnson. Iaconio qualified #7 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.26/189.51. An off pace 7.49/172.64 lost in the first round, to Lewis Worden's 7.28/188. After that, it was off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, where his 7.35/189.35 best was good for the fifth alternate. The seventh NHRA race of the season was the Springnationals in June. Frank qualified #13 for the show with a 7.33/188.71, but he lost to WJ in the first round. Frank must have been getting sick of losing early by this time, but the rut continued in Canada at the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #10 with a 7.28/190.43, but once again, he lost in the first round, when he slowed to a 7.67/147.29 that lost to Jim Yates' 7.24/191. His best NHRA ET was 7.190 at Seattle. Frank also went 191.24 at Seattle and Maple Grove but ran it at Sonoma first. |
