Notes: The Torino had a number of paintjobs; unclear what year this photo shows. -- RT | On September 7, Ivey was at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Grand American held there. In the first round, his 7.89 beat the "Hemi Hoss" of Hunt and Taylor. In round two, a 7.82 beat Gitthens and Allen, but in the semifinals, the Torino lost fire on the line and Terry Pringle singled into the final in Gene Snow's Dart. -- RH |

Notes: One bad car. Tom won Top Eliminator at Lions & Santa Ana with this car and drove it home. LaSalle transmission.; At Santa Ana, he ran in B/SR, but at Pomona, he ran in A/SR, mostly running on gas. On June 9 at Pomona, he set a strip record with 113.63 mph. At San Fernando, on June 30, he turned 115.53 mph running in the non-fendered fuel roadster TX class. After that race, he pulled his big Buick motor out of his roadster and put it in his new dragster for its first outing at San Fernando on July 7. Photo: Rodder's Journal, no. 32, p. 67 - MB |

Notes: Ivo recounted his story about his first drag car: "I saw this roadster [the Kookie car] that Norm Grabowski had at Bob's Drive In and went up to him and asked, 'Do you mind if I build one like yours?' 'Sure kid,' he said, 'I get asked that all the time.' Of course Norm didn't think I would follow through. So I built a T-bucket just to go to Bob's on Friday nights. I bought a Buick motor and put it in the roadster. When I got it done, I took it to Santa Ana to see what it would do. The thing ran like a streak. It was never defeated in its class and held the record at every track that I ran at. I built that car to go to Bob's but then I built a bigger motor for it with Hilborn fuel injectors." Before he put the bigger injected Buick in the roadster, it was a rough-looking car with a blocky-radiator and engine cowling. It wasn't much for looks, but it could haul. He took a class win in A/SR at Santa Ana on Mar. 17 with 114.94 mph, good for a new strip record. He had been racing at Santa Ana for a few weeks previous with little success as he tried different carb and injector set-ups. He repeated his A/SR win at Santa Ana a week later on Mar. 24 with 116.73 mph. On Apr. 7 at Santa Ana, he won B/SR class with 111.94 mph. He was runner-up in the top eliminator final to Don Little driving Ken Lindley's B/D. Strong winds slowed the times of the racers. At San Fernando on May 5, he took a class win with 115.48 mph. During top eliminator eliminations, he won the first round with 12.50 at 114.25 mph. He lost in the second round to the Forsythe Brothers dragster. At San Fernando on May 12, he took top eliminator with 114.06 mph. On May 19 at San Fernando, he won his class with 115 mph. On June 15 at Colton, he won A/SR class with 112.64 mph. He repeated his A/SR win at Colton on June 23, but the clocks had been wrecked the week prior by a dragster so no times were registered. On July 6 at Colton, he won the A Open Gas class with 121.17 mph, undoubtedly running on fuel. He took top gas eliminator with 95.13 mph. He set a new strip record in A/SR class at Colton on July 13 with 113.49 mph. On August 10 at Colton, he won the A/SR class with 115.38 mph, another new track record. The next day on Aug. 11, he set another strip record at San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip with 113.20 mph in A/MR. At San Fernando on Sep. 8 he took top eliminator with 117.03 mph. He also set a new class record for modified roadsters with 120.80 mph in 12.44 seconds. He took the win in the B/SR class at Colton on Sep. 15 with 119.56 mph. According to the report in Drag News (9/21/57), Ivo denied that the fox tails were "speed secrets." He took top gas eliminator at Colton on Sep. 22 with 118.36 mph. On Sep. 28 at Colton, he set another new A/SR class record with 120.64 mph. On Oct. 13 at Santa Ana, he took the A/SR win with 107.52 mph. Note: We have a claimed ET of 9.145 at San Gabe and a Top Speed of 160.00 at San Fernando, but both marks seem questionable. The Top Speed at the '58 Nationals for A/D was 156.25 - an NHRA record - and for B/D was 130.05. Winning ET for A/D was 10.04 and for B/D was 10.77. - RT |

Notes: Unblown Buicks mounted side by side. 87 inch Kent Fuller chassis. Once Ron Pellegrini purchased the Twin Buick from Tom Ivo, it was campaigned as the SpeedCraft Twin Buick. On 2/05/1960, Tommy became the first 8-second run (8.95) on gas. Set new world speed record at 170.45 at Lions on March 13/1960, then reset it at Lions on 4/23/60 at 172.74, and then reset it at 173.07 at Lions on 5/14/60. Did Tom really go 193.54 in 1960? |

Notes: Four injected nailhead Buicks in a 4WD Kent Fuller chassis. Way too heavy to compete successfully as a gas dragster, but phenomenally popular during its long life as an exhibition runner. - RT |

Notes: Ivo had a best of three match race against Tom McEwen at Lions on January 26. In the first race, Ivo soloed with an 8.42/185.94 when McEwen lost fire. It was Ivo's turn to lose fire in the second race. In the third and deciding match, Ivo won with an 8.02/188.66. Another match race was held at Ramona on February 2. This time, Ivo won two straight with a best of 8.12/184.05 over opponent Norm Weekly in the "Frantic Four." Shortly after this, he got his runner-up finish at the NHRA Winternationals, running a second best 8.24/191.48 in the final to lose to Jack Williams' 8.16/193. On March 15 he was at Kingdon for a fuel meet. In the first round, he beat Art Malone with an 8.29. But in round two, an off pace 8.64 lost to Don Garlits' 8.24. He had a match race against Ron Goodsell at Kingdon on April 5, but he lost that match. Tommy was at Lions on April 18 for an eight-car show, but he lost to Jeep Hampshire's 8.29/192 in the first round, with an 8.48/188.66. He was at Dragway 42 on July 19 to make a few exhibition runs. Ivo had magneto problems on his first pass and went 8.35/182.54, but after getting things straightened out he came back out a ran 8.23/191.88. A third pass resulted in the car going into a wheelstand so Ivo shut it down. |

Notes: Indy Top Fuel format in 1965 was 'Class Eliminations' on Sunday, where all ran. 36 cars ran in Round 1 of TF. The winner was Don Prudhomme, who sat out the Monday Top Fuel eliminations of the top 16 qualifiers. Tommy Ivo won this and then met Prudhomme for the overall title, which was won by Prudhomme 7.50/207.33 to 7.81 202.70. Tommy had earlier run a best of 7.65/205.95 |

Notes: Steve Swaja designed. The streamliner was active through late spring 1965, often match racing other streamliners. By July, TI was touring with a conventional car. It was definitely not the Video Liner Runner-up at Indy. It went 194.80 at Lions (spring 1965); Ivo debuted this streamliner at Fremont on Mar. 15, turning 8.24 at 192.30 mph. Five days later, he ran at Lions without the body shell, turning 8.39 at 194.80 mph. A week later, running with the body back on at Lions, he turned 8.90 at 183.66 mph. He appeared at Puyallup International Dragway on Apr. 10. At Lions on Apr. 17, he turned 8.11 at 193.96 mph. He ran at Fontana on May 1, turning 8.03 at 192.30 mph. He then focused his attention on preparing for a national tour and parked the streamliner. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Tommy was the number two qualifier at Pomona Winters 67 with a 7.239/215.30. Ran 7.092/213.28 at Indy US Nationals on 9/67. Ivo made a lot of money, mostly running match races. As mentioned, Ivo's 7.23/215 at Pomona qualified second behind Leroy Goldstein's 7.22/219. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.44/206.42 fell to "Sneaky Pete" Robinson's Ford at 7.33/205. On April 2, he was at Fremont to take on Connie Kalitta's Winternationals winning Ford-powered car. In their first race, Kalitta's 7.49/205 beat his 7.54/206.88. Ivo got to even the score in the second race when the SOHC failed to start. Tommy wrapped up the match race win by running 7.74/210.28 in the third race that covered Kalitta's 7.86/209. On April 9, he was at Motor City Dragway for a best of three against Don Garlits car driven by Emery Cook. Ivo lost this match two straight. In the first race, his 10.17/136.15 lost to Cook's 8.08/179, and in the second, he ran quicker with a 7.97/192.70 but lost to Emory's quick-leaving 8.03/193. They had a rematch shortly after (April 16) at Englishtown. Ivo got some revenge by winning this one. It didn't come easy as he cracked a cylinder wall while winning his first race with a 7.61/201.78 that beat Cook's quicker 7.60/197. Ivo then unloaded his backup car to face Cook for the next race. This time Emory fouled while Ivo ran 7.56/205.46 to win. Connecticut was his next stop for a best of three against "Sneaky Pete" Robinson's Ford. Ivo won the first race with his 7.91/196.92 getting the best of Pete's 8.33/196. But in round two, Robinson tied up the match by running 7.64/193 to defeat Tommy's 7.78/200.88. Ivo lost the match when he smoked the tires hard in the third race, and his 7.90/202.70 fell to the Ford's 7.55/199. Tommy raced at Cecil County's Mr. USA top fuel meet at the end of July. He blew his engine in the first round while beating Fred Forkner with a 7.73. After changing engines, he faced Don Garlits in round two, but a series of wheelstands forced him to shut off and lose to Don's 7.36/202. On December 10 at Half Moon Bay for an eight-car show, Ivo ran a first-round 7.41/214.28 before losing to Don Cook's 7.43/223.32 in the semis with a 7.27/219.80. |

Notes: East Coast Drag News race promo in 1972 claimed 231 for Tommy in 1969 on a run where his clutch exploded. We need confirmation. | Ivo was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and although it was a 32-car field, he and 49 others failed to qualify. He did a lot of match racing, even beating Don Garlits two straight at Island Dragway in New Jersey on April 13. Tommy ran 7.24/212.76 and a 7.13 at a questionable 238.72. He also faced Chris Karamesines in a best-of-three match at York US 30 on April 26. He lost the first race with a 7.08/183.66 to the "Greek's" holeshot-aided 7.18/216. But he returned to win the next two rounds and the match with a best run of 6.56/215.82. At the end of May, Ivo was at Martin, Michigan, for a UDRA race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, his 7.07/205.94 beat Cliff Zinc's 7.12/205. In round two, he shut off early to a 7.43/150.00 loss against eventual winner John Mulligan's 6.60/230. On July 6, he went up against "Sneaky Pete" Robinson's Ford for a match race at Suffolk. Pete was having problems while Tommy's car was running great. He beat the Ford driver three straight with times of 6.97/199.10,6.95/216.34 and 6.98/213.76. Pete's best run was 7.27/164. Later in the month, he took on Tom McEwen at Kil-Kare. This time McEwen had problems and had his clutch lock up in their first race. Ivo won with a 7.51. Tommy came out for a solo run to win the match two straight, but the solo run cost him an engine. |

Notes: 4-engine Buick raced against 4-engine Mustang at Englishtown 1971. Mustang won the match with a best of 10.74/115.53 to the Buick's 10.97/110.66. Ivo ran it one last time at the '82 Finals, then, in full firesuit and helmet, burned his gloves on the starting line held with a pair of tongs.
