Notes: After a highly successful 1959 season in which Jacono won 129 trophies, he followed it with an equally special 1960 season. His best time in 1959 with the car was 9.97 at 145 mph. He scored numerous Top Eliminator wins at Vineland in 1960, also setting a new track record on Aug. 28. Racing against Walt Arfons Green Monster #16 at Langhorne Speedway, he set a national 1/8th-mile record on Nov. 6. Photo: Hot Rod, 2005, p. 60 - MB |

Notes: Joe made his first trip into the "7" second bracket on June 13 at Mason-Dixon. His time was good enough to qualify #2 for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he blew his engine in the first round and lost to the Reese Brothers. Also ran 8.21 at Cecil County. We need to validate the exact 7 second ET from Mason-Dixon. |

Notes: 1 of 3 Woody lightweights - All magnesium & titanium components & body - 1285 lbs. wet. Joe was driving this car its new owners on May 31 at Capitol for an eight-car show. During qualifying, he pulled the 'chute, and the motor mounts broke. The big Chrysler engine moved back, and a fuel line ruptured. The spraying fuel caught fire, and Joe got the dragster stopped. He was OK, but the same could not be said for the dragster as the fire had damaged it pretty badly. |

Notes: Jacono's first flopper was an SOHC powered former Tasca Mustang in 1970 which burned up in his driveway before it had a chance to be sorted out. 7.44/195 were the first full runs on the car. Joe drove Al Graeber's car at Maple Grove for one run in Jul-70. Bought Mazmanian car later in 1970. |

Notes: Former Mazmanian Cuda, still has some remaining lettering from Mazmanian on front and rear fenders. | East Coast Drag News race promo from 3/26/72 cited a 216 mph Atco track record and a 222.22 speed and a defeat of Don Prudhomme at the CARS Magazine meet at Atco. We need to confirm those were in 1972 and need to confirm it was the funny car and not an earlier dragster. |

Notes: Delaware's "Joltin' Joe" Jacono, circa 1973, ran an East Coast schedule with his popular funny cars. Following Top Fuel efforts in the 60s, Jacono's first flopper was an SOHC powered former Tasca "Brief Encounter" Mustang in 1970 which burned before it had a chance to be sorted out. He followed up with a former Big John Mazmanian "Brief Encounter" Cuda in 71/72 and ultimately, this Woody Gilmore chassied "Rollin Stoned" entry. Cartoon character on car was a parody of Jacono's Caveman nickname. Despite his limited schedule, Jacono was competitive as evidenced by his second place finish in 73 NED WCS flopper points race. Car was campaigned mostly on a "match race" basis through 1976. Arguably his biggest win came at the 75 NHRA National Open at Cecil County over Bill Leavitt. |

Notes: Jacono won the Cecil National Open on April 21. His opponent, Bob Mayer, broke in the final, and Jacono ran 6.71/172.74 for the victory. Shortly after that (May 4), he competed at York US 30 for its Funny Car Nationals. He failed to reach the finals there. He was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 opener the following day. Unfortunately, he fouled against Bob Lagana in the first round. Joe was at Maple Grove in May for the Spring All-Pro Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.77/177.51 beat Al Bergler. In the semifinal, he defeated "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.74 with a 6.71. But he had to face JJ again in the final as Bob Palmer had won his semifinal race but broke and could not run. Jim returned on the "break rule," and in the final, his 6.61/209 beat Jacono's 6.66/211.76. |

Notes: Joe's last year of competition until the 2000s. It also had a very clean white-on-red panel paint job. Jacono was at Suffolk in April for an eight-car show. His 6.79/189.07 advanced in the first round when Jim Wemett's car broke. In the semi-final, he shut down to 13/52.17 with problems against Arne Swensen's 6.75/200. Joe was at Empire Dragway in August for its Gold Cup Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.96/177.16 lost to Dodger Glenn's 6.56/218 in the "Frantic Ford."He was back at Suffolk in September for the Dixie Drag Classic. In the opening round, his 6.62/196.96 beat Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car. An off-pace 7.40/129.31 in the semi-final lost to eventual winner Pee Wee Wallace's 6.57/216. |
