Notes: We need to confirm that Bill drove this car in 1972. Definitely drove it at the 71 Finals.

Notes: The car that revolutionized Pro Stock racing. In addition to NHRA wins, won Bristol Springs at 9.56 at 143.31. Low qualifier, Low ET, Top Speed, and winner at Tulsa PRA race at 9.395/146.57. Then wrapped up with a win at World Finals at 9.340/148.02 (but had to holeshot Bob Glidden in the final 9.381 to 9.379). The 9.340/148.02 were Bill’s best NHRA national event times. He did run 149.00 at the IHRA Empire Nationals. NHRA record holder at 9.42/147.63. Ran 9.77 and won the NHRA World Finals at Amarillo. Ran 9.44 at NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville. Ran 9.47 at Grandnationals. Won NHRA Winternationals in debut. Ran 9.37 at New England. | This car changed Pro Stock forever. Before this Vega was built, Pro Stock cars were built around stock cars with the frame that came with the car. Even Bill probably didn't realize how stout this combination was. It started out innocently enough when he showed up at Pomona for the Winternationals. He ran a 9.90 to qualify #17 in the 32-car field. There were 13 Mopars and 3 Fords that qualified ahead of him. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Stuart McDade in Billy Stepp's car. Jenkins had fooled around with the jets in the carburetors before eliminations. In the race with Stuart, Bill put the mighty Mopar on the trailer with a 9.63/142.18 to Stuart's 9.75/142. The Chevy fans were screaming. It had been almost two years since a Chevy had won an NHRA National event. In the second round, he beat Bill Bagshaw with a 9.62 and again the fans went wild cheering on the Vega. NHRA had a new superstar. The Mopar brass were not liking it. In round three, a 9.73/136.57 beat Melvin Yow. In the semifinals, Bill came up against Chrysler's in-house car, "The Mopar Missile," driven by Don Carlton. Jenkins' 9.68/140.18 thumped Carlton's 9.82/141. Chevy fans went nuts. Only one more Mopar to beat for the title. In the final, he ran Don Grotheer. Don ran a good 9.82/141, but Jenkins took the win with a 9.68/140.18. The Vega breezed through tech at the Gatornationals. It was said that Bill could have cut the roof off and run as a convertible and NHRA would've said OK because of the fans flocking to the races to see him run. The same tech guys flunked a Maverick for having Comet taillights. So, Bill rips off a 9.44/144.69 (Low ET & Top Speed) in qualifying #1. That was the quickest ever time in NHRA legal pro stock. As good as he was running, he wasn't even around for the semifinals. A first-round 9.62/141.95 beat Herb McCandless' 9.75/141, but in round two, the little Vega's tires broke loose and his 9.77/141.06 lost to Reid Whisnant's 9.63/140. Later in March, he faced off against Ronnie Sox at LaPlace. Jenkins lost the match, winning just the second race while Sox won the other two. Sox beat Jenkins again at the AHRA Pro-Am Championships at West Palm Beach. This time, Ronnie got him in the semifinals. Shortly after that, Bill was at Bluegrass Raceway for a best of three match against McDade. Jenkins won all three races with a best of 9.58/143.31. Near the end of April, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. It was rained out after the first-round, but Bill did beat Bobby Yowell with a 9.58/144.92 which was Low ET and Top Speed. He then went to Capitol Raceway for a USRT race. The cars were run under NHRA weights, but rosin was allowed. Jenkins ran 9.54 during qualifying and in the race for the first place honors, he beat Sox's 9.38/144 in the semifinals with a quick-leaving 9.42/146.10. He faced Dick Landy in the final and the Vega's 9.47/145.29 just nipped Landy's Challenger at 9.48/144. On May 28, he was at the New England National Open where he reset the NHRA Pro Stock record to 9.42. He won the race with a 9.50/143.08 in the final. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, “Grumpy" qualified #1 with a 9.65. Carlton was close behind at 9.66. Only one Camaro (Bruce Walker) qualified in the field and Bill's 9.77/141 beat it in the first round. He set Low ET in round two where his 9.62/143.08 stopped Mike Fons' 9.77. The two Pro Stock kingpins, Jenkins and Sox, met in the semifinals. Bill’s 9.63/143.31 turned back Ronnie's 9.66/142. Once again, Bill faced Grotheer in a NHRA National event final, and once again, the results were the same. Bill’s 9.67/143.63 easily took the win over Don's 9.79/141. Jenkins didn't race at the IHRA events, but he made an exception to run at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 with a 9.74, but Sox was breathing down his neck with his new Duster that qualified #2 also at 9.74. But Jenkins just got quicker during eliminations. An opening round 9.68/144.00 beat Reid Whisnant. In round two, his 9.68/141.50 advanced when Fons fouled against him. In the semifinal, McCandless' 9.77 lost to the Vega's 9.63/142.85. He faced Butch Leal in the final. Leal was a strong runner in Pro Stock competition in '72 and if it wasn't for Jenkins domination, Leal would have had the car to beat. Butch had gotten around a fouling Sox in the other semifinal race. But Leal's times were at least a tenth off of Jenkins’ pace here and it showed in the final, where Bill set Low ET with a 9.56/143.31 to win over Leal's 9.75/141. In July, Bill was at York US 30 for another USRT race. He ran 9.51/143.76 to qualify for first place honors. But in the semifinal race between him and Sox, Bill got beat. Ronnie’s 9.40/145 beat the Vega's 9.43/142.40. Seeing Bill lose as '72 went on was rare. Another victory came over a 32-car field at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Bill qualified #1 with a 9.50/144.46. He dropped that a tenth in the first round, where his 9.40/144.69 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Wally Booth's new Gremlin at 9.82. A round two 9.52/137 beat Whisnant's 9.72 and in round three, his 9.41/144.69 beat Fons' 9.50/144. He had two more Mopars he go. In the semifinals, McCandless went into a huge wheelstand while Bill advanced with a 9.46/144.46 and in the final, he was up against Landy. Dick lost a wheel on his Challenger and Jenkins ran 9.48/144.23 for yet another win. No other car at Englishtown had run a 9.4; the closest was Fons' 9.50. Bill had had so much fun at Bristol that he decided to run another IHRA race. So, he won the Empire Nationals on July 23. He was really running well. His 9.43/148.54 qualified #1. A first-round 9.37/146.34 stopped Arlen Vanke and in the semifinals, his 9.44/148.27 beat Carlton. It was another good-old Sox vs. Jenkins final. But there was no stopping the "Grump" on this day as his 9.38/149.00 claimed the victory over Sox's 9.42/146. He lost to McCandless in the final of the USRT race at Englishtown early in August, but that was a minor setback as he went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals and dominated that event. His low qualifying 9.41/146 was over two tenths quicker than the second qualifier. After an easy first-round win, he beat Booth in round two with a 9.42/144.23. A semifinal 9.47/143.31 stopped Ron Hutter's similar Vega at 9.68/139. Larry Breaux was his final round victim and Larry fouled so Jenkins got the victory with a 9.47. No other car at the race was able to run below 9.63.

Notes: The car that revolutionized Pro Stock racing also was a terror on the match race trail. Used a bigger motor for this run and less weight. The 9.08 was done in tire testing. Confirmed 9.19 in match race trim. Also 9.31 track record at Englishtown 72.

Notes: This car replaced the almighty '72 car that was destroyed in a crash. Got a '74 nose in '74; raced until '75 maybe early '76. - JB | A "For Sale" ad placed by Jenkins in a late '74 drag paper advertised the availability of the '73 SRD car with or without engine/driveline for a starting price of $9,000. Jenkins said if purchased complete he would deliver the car to the new owner at a local track "in competitive trim" and conforming to '75 NHRA rules. - RT | Jenkins became the first to lose with an eight second run, 8.91 to 8.96 to Wayne Gapp. Jenkins received an invalid 8.64, 8.647, and 8.90 times at Ontario. - Danny White | Bill Jenkins would never have as successful season as he had had in '72. But having "Grumpy Jenkins" at your track was sure to draw a crowd. The '73 season was labeled the "year of the Fords" as the weight breaks favored the 351 Pinto combination. Jenkins was still tough and he was still the top Chevy in Pro Stock. He started the '73 season at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. His 9.53/144.92 qualified #9 and that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Ronnie Sox. Bill had quite a snooze on the line in their race as his 9.25/146.34 lost to Sox's 9.40/145. The NHRA Winternationals at Pomona was mainly remembered for the rain. It took three weekends to finally complete the race. Bill qualified #3 in the 32-car field with a 9.42/148.76. He backed up the speed for a new NHRA record. Eliminations did not go so well for the "Grump.” He beat Sonny Bryant in the opening round with a 9.54/147, but in the second round, he got out of shape against Bill Bagshaw and shut down to a 10.12/109 loss. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 9.15/147.05. But in the opening round, his front brakes locked up and his front tire smoking 13.96 lost to Paul Blevins' 9.37/148. His team did get the award for "best appearing crew" so they didn't leave empty handed. In May, he was at National Trail for the second NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 9.33 and in the first round, set Low ET and Top Speed with a 9.21/148.27. He lost in the semifinals. A couple of weeks later, he won the AHRA Grand American race at Dragway 42. Bill qualified #1 and he beat Arlen Vanke in the final. In June, he was at Maple Grove for the USRT event. He broke against Don Grotheer in the first round, but during qualifying, had reset both ends of the track record with a 9.14/147.78. He had won the NHRA Springnationals the year before, but the competition improved for '73. Bill "only" qualified #13 with a 9.49. Only two Vegas qualified and they were paired together in the first round. Blevins had been pushing hard to displace the "Grump" as the #1 Chevy in Pro Stock. But Bill took him down a notch here as in their race, his 9.46/145.86 put Paul's 9.51/145 back on the trailer. Unfortunately, Jenkins’ 9.48/145.63 in the second round lost to eventual winner Don Carlton's 9.45/146. Shortly after that, he was at Century 21 Raceway in Denver for the AHRA Springnationals. Only ten cars showed for the hoped for sixteen-car field. Jenkins' 9.86 qualified #2 behind Dick Landy's 9.76. These two would work their way into the final. Bill ran 9.70, 9.66 (Low ET), and 9.69. Landy’s best in eliminations was 9.67 so the final was close. But Bill fell off to a 9.87/137 and lost to Landy's 9.68/141. Things went well for Jenkins at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Almost 50 cars showed up to attempt to qualify for the 32-car field. Bill’s 9.14/150.25 qualified #2. But during eliminations, he improved by more than a tenth. An opening round 9.02/151.00 beat alternate Ron Manchester. Another 9.02/150.25 beat Wally Booth's AMC effort at 9.32/144. Sox's 9.20/147 fell to the Vega's 9.06/150.00 in round three and yet another 9.02/150.50 stopped Blevins' 9.20/148 in the semifinals. He faced the strong Mopar of Butch Leal in the final. Beside Jenkins, Leal was the only other car in the 9.0s with a 9.07 best. But Bill ran a consistent 9.02/150.25 to take the victory over Leal's 9.13/151. Jenkins' 9.02 was Low ET. Bill received a crazy 8.640 ET at the Supernationals that was in no way legit. His top NHRA national event speed was 151.77. The 3 finish number indicates the 1972 world championship in pro stock. Back then, NHRA assigned 1 and 2 to the top finishers in top fuel and pro stock.

Bill started his march by running 8.92/153.06 to beat Larry Huff's Mopar at 9.25/149. In round two he took out Mike Fons' Mopar with an 8.93/152.80 to Mike's 9.06/149. A semifinal 8.87/153.84 stopped Wayne Gapp's 9.03/151 Pinto effort and advanced Jenkins into the final against Glidden. It was expected to be a close race as Bob had run 8.88, 8.91, and 8.94 to reach the final. Unfortunately, Bill was going to be a bit "Grumpy" after his late start coupled with an 8.85/154.01 lost to Glidden's slower 8.93/152. He had some consolation in that he set a new AHRA ET record on the run. After that, Jenkins had things go his way at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 behind the Fords of Glidden and Gapp with an 8.98/152.28. In the first round, he met Paul Blevins who was pushing hard to beat Bill as the #1 Chevy, but his off-pace 9.33/148 lost to the "Grump's" 9.05/151.77. In round two, an 8.92/152.02 beat Melvin Yow's 9.12/152. He faced Glidden in the semifinals where a Low ET of the meet 8.91 at 153.06 put the Pinto's 9.09/143 on the trailer. The final was another Ford vs. Chevy match and Bill ran 8.93/152.54 to nip Gapp's close 8.94/152. He qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 9.06/151.00 and in the first round, improved to 9.03/150.00 while beating Hubert Platt's 9.06/151. In the second round Bill took a nap and his 8.97/150.50 lost to Frank Iaconio's 9.12/151. Bill was driving less and less, and he hired Ken Dondero to drive at AHRA events as well as the NHRA Division 1 events. He still drove at most of his match races.

Notes: First Pro Stock with struts built by SRD. | From mid-'73 until the NHRA rulebook caught up to them at the end of the '75 season, the Fords owned Pro Stock competition. Many finals saw just two blue oval cars racing for the title. Chevy lovers had this man to root for. Jenkins was by far the strongest Chevy campaigner during this time. The '75 season was no different. He showed up at Pomona running a dry sump oiling system. In qualifying, his 8.84/154.90 was #3 behind the Fords of Wayne Gapp and Bob Glidden. Bill's opening round 8.87/155.44 beat alternate Mickey Mills' 9.25/145, and he ran 8.80/155.44 (again) in round two to beat Scott Shafiroff, who had just switched from a Chevy to a Ford. Jenkins' speed was a new NHRA record. He faced yet another Ford in the semifinals; this time, it was a low qualifier, Gapp's new four-door Maverick. Bill must have been a little concerned about the car as he fouled against him. As it turned out, Wayne had clutch problems on the run, and Jenkins probably would have won. It was also probably because of his light at Pomona that he let Larry Lombardo drive his car at the NHRA Gatornationals. Larry qualified third behind the same two Fords, and ironically, he fouled against Glidden in the semifinals. Bill was back behind the wheel for a best-of-three match race against Gapp at Cayuga. Things didn't go his way as he lost three straight with a best of 8.89/152.02. At the NHRA Springnationals, of course, Bill qualified #3 with a 9.01/150.75, but this time only Gapp's Ford was ahead of him. Dave Kanners slipped his Hornet into the #2 spot. Bill started eliminations with a 9.04/151.00 over Charlie Reed, while a second round 9.03/150.50 beat Wally Booth's 9.09/149. In the semifinals, his 9.01 beat future superstar Warren Johnson's 9.08 and moved him into the final against Roy Hill. Jenkins was the favorite as Hill qualified #16 and was at least a tenth off the pace, and it showed in the final, where the "Grump's" 8.98/152.28 got the victory over Hill's 9.16/149. Jenkins moved up a spot in qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 8.92/152.02 was second to Gapp's 8.89/152. These two would meet in the final. Bill started by running an 8.97/152.80 over Larry Huff's 9.15. A round two 8.92/154.63 beat Johnson's 9.11/149, and in the semifinals, his 8.94/152.54 advanced when Shafiroff's Mustang II broke. Bill tried really hard in the final, as he must have left a dent in the floorboard by the gas pedal. His 8.93/154.90 (Top Speed) lost to Gapp's 8.80/154.63. He was at Maryland soon after that, for the US Pro Stock Open. Bill set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.83 that beat Pat Musi. But in round two, the car broke while beating Bob Ingles, and he was unable to return for the semifinal. He expected his new Monza to be ready for the NHRA Grandnationals, and he had sold both his Vegas. Unfortunately, the Monza was not done, and Jenkins had to skip the Grandnationals as he had no car to race. The new Monza debuted in time for the PHR Championships later in August.

Notes: On June 21, "Dyno" Don Nicholson made history at a match race against Bill Jenkins at Englishtown. Don ran the first recognized seven second time in a Pro Stock car. In the first race of the match, his 7.99/162.45 beat Jenkins' 8.38/152. "Grumpy" won the second race with a holeshot 8.15/165 beating Nicholson's 8.10/164.53. But "Dyno" came back to win the match in the last race with an 8.01/166.35 over Jenkins' 8.19/166.

Notes: Bill Jenkins returned to driving in '79 after having a heated argument with his driver Larry Lombardo after Larry fouled in the final against Bob Glidden at the NHRA U. S. Nationals. The two exchanged some harsh words and Jenkins let him go. His first event behind the wheel since the '76 NHRA Winternationals came at the World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway. He qualified #9, which set up a first-round meeting against low qualifier Glidden. Bill’s 8.83/153.32 lost to eventual winner Bob’s 8.66/155.

Notes: The last car SRD built for Jenkins. Bill returned to driving after a three-year layoff. Confirmed 8.51/158 at Gainesville 3/80. Bill started his '80 season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.63/157.06. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kevin Rotty. Jenkins gambled on the tree and lost, fouling away an 8.65/156.52, while Rotty advanced with an 8.62/157. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with an impressive 8.51 behind Bob Glidden and Lee Shepherd. Unfortunately, he lost to Don Coonce in the first round. He ran 8.60/157.61 to qualify on the "bump" for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. It was a tough eight-car show. He picked up slightly to an 8.59/156.79 in the first round, to beat Larry Johnson's late 8.58/157. In the semifinals, he had problems and shut off to 8.82/139.53 in a loss to Frank Iaconio's 8.47/159. On May 4th, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. There, his 8.61/155.97 qualified #2 behind Iaconio's 8.55. These two would work their way to the final. Jenkins' 9.00/153.32 in the first round, beat Don Campanello's Arrow, while an 8.83/155.44 in the semifinals beat former driver Larry Lombardo's quicker 8.72/155. Facing Iaconio in the final was gonna be tough as Frank had run 8.58 and 8.51. Sure enough, Bill ran his best of eliminations at 8.73/157.06, but it was good for the runner-up spot as Frank took the victory with an 8.53/153. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Bill qualified #7 with an 8.73/153.84. He beat Morris Johnson's Vega in the first round, before losing to Iaconio in round two. He won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maryland International, stopping Iaconio in the final. Englishtown was the next stop on the NHRA circuit for the Summernationals. Jenkins qualified #8 with an 8.65/155.17. He ran 8.68/155.97 in the first round, over Coonce, but an 8.67/156.25 in round two could not beat his opponent's 8.64/157. He then went to Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open, where he finished runner-up to Shepherd at the eight-car show. Another runner-up finish came at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race. His 8.77/153.58 in the final lost to Iaconio's 8.58/156. He was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 9th. It was an eight-car field, and Bill's 8.74/154.63 qualified on the "bump." The race was postponed by rain, and Bill didn't return. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. An 8.72 qualified #7. He lost to Jim Kinnett's Volare in the first round. The NHRA Division 1 final was held at New England on August 17. Jenkins qualified #5 for the show with an 8.74/154.37. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Iaconio, who Bill had been having a tough time getting around. Bill took a shot and fouled, slowing to 9.01 while Frank advanced with an 8.60/157. Things went well at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Bill ran 8.62/155.44 to qualify #8. A first-round 8.68/155.17 beat Roy Hill's 8.74/158, and in round two, he showed he could still drive as his holeshot-aided 8.65/155.17 beat Andy Mannarino's quicker 8.52/157. Bill's fun came to an end in the semifinals, where eventual winner Shepherd ran 8.54/158 to beat his 8.61/155.44.
