Notes: Warren Johnson had always run well in Pro Stock, but he really improved in '76. His season started well by winning the AHRA Winternationals in January at Tucson. He qualified #4 with an 8.74/152.02. After an easy first-round win, he beat Randy Humphrey in round two with a 9.05. He had to race Ken Dondero driving Bill Jenkins' Monza in the semifinals, and Warren proved up to the task, running 8.99/153.32 over Dondero's 9.04/150. In the final, he faced Lee Edwards in an all-Camaro battle. Johnson got a slight holeshot, and his 9.01/153.32 held off Edwards' 9.00/149 for the victory. His next race was the Phoenix Winter Classic. It was another sixteen-car field, and his 8.90 qualified #1. In the first two rounds, he dropped Gary Hansen and Humphrey before losing to Richie Zul's similar big-block Camaro in the semifinals. After that, it was off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A strong 8.79 qualified #2 behind Bill Jenkins himself, driving his Monza to 8.77 for the pole. Warren beat Edwards in round one, but in the second round, he lost to Wayne Gapp, who was still driving the "Gapp and Roush" four-door Maverick. At only his fourth-ever NHRA National event, he made it to his first Pro Stock final at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. An 8.80 qualified him #4, and in the opening round, he beat Paul Blevins. He picked up to 8.78/156.25 in round two to beat Zul's 8.83. Another 8.78 at 156.52 beat Dave Kanners' 8.84 in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Larry Lombardo, who was now driving Jenkins' car. Warren ran his best, an 8.76/156.25, but failed to beat Lombardo's Low ET (and new NHRA ET record) 8.71/155. On April 11, he was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. The times turned were unreal (never sure about the times turned at KCIR). Johnson ran 8.65 and 8.63 to reach the final, where he faced Dondero. Warren fouled in the final, wasting an 8.54/160.71, while Ken motored to the victory with an 8.80/156. He then won the NHRA Division 5 Opener at Denver. Only three cars attended, and Warren set low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with a 9.20 at 148.28. The speed was correction factored to 156.66 and became a new national record. In the final round, his 9.40/145.40 beat Dale Falk's 10.28/136.78. He won AHRA's third race of the season as well, the Okie Nationals held at Tulsa in May. Once again, it was a fight between WJ and Jenkins' driver, Dondero. Ken held the upper hand in qualifying, running 8.83/155, while Warren followed with an 8.90/155.17. Johnson picked up the pace during eliminations, running 8.87/153.32 and 8.86/155.17, while Dondero's best was 8.88. The two faced off in the final, and Johnson won with an 8.80 (Low ET) at 155.17 over Ken's 8.87/154. He got into another NHRA final at Columbus for the Springnationals. WJ's 8.84/155.17 qualified #2 behind Wally Booth's 8.82. These two would work their way into the final. In the first round, his 8.81/154.37 beat Gapp's 9.14/149. A second-round 8.87/153.58 took out Lombardo's 8.94/155. In the semifinals, an 8.83/153 beat Bob Glidden's 8.92/153. Booth had been running strong in eliminations, and in the final, his 8.74/154 easily covered WJ's 8.81/156.25 (Top Speed). Englishtown was his next stop for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #5 with an 8.76/158.45 (Top Speed and a new NHRA speed record). He lasted until the second round, where his 8.80/157.61 lost to Lombardo's 8.72/154. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with an 8.69/158.73 (Top Speed and another NHRA speed record), and he lasted until the semifinal, where his 8.79/155.97 lost to Booth's 8.69/155. After that, it was off to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He continued to qualify well with an 8.83 that got him the #3 spot in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round. Finished number 2 in 1976. Photo from the 1976 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. 156.23 Gainesville. 8.74 AHRA Tucson. 158.45 Englishtown Summernationals (National Record) at 156.25 NHRA Springnationals Top Speed.

Notes: Ran 75/79. Finished No. 2 in 1976. Photo from the 1977 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 8.83 at Pomona, 8.84 at Gainesville, 8.80 at Columbus, 8.81 at Englishtown, 8.74 at Indy, 8.640 at Seattle, 8.80 at Ontario. | Warren started his '77 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 in the field with an 8.91, and he beat Jim Basko in the first round, with an 8.98/153.28. Another 8.91 took out Kevin Rotty in round two, and a semifinal 8.95/153.58 put him into the final against low qualifier Larry Lombardo in Bill Jenkins' Monza. Larry won the race with an 8.82 (Low ET of the meet) at 153 over WJ's 8.99/153.58. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 but lost early. He also lost early at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his second round 8.93 lost to Lombardo's 8.75. He then went to Pueblo Raceway in Denver for the NHRA Division 5 race. A final round 9.20/147 stopped Lynn Harrison. This was WJ's eighth straight NHRA Division 5 race victory. Early in May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 8.84/154.37 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. The race was postponed due to rain, and WJ was unable to return for the rain date. Shortly after that, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.80/155.70 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Wally Booth, and his AMC. The two of them had a good race, but on this day, Booth had the stronger car as his 8.75/154 beat WJ's 8.87/151.77. Early in July, he won the third NHRA Division 5 race held at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD His quick-leaving 9.11 got the win over Richie Zul's 9.10. Johnson had some trouble at Englishtown during qualifying for the NHRA Summernationals. His 'chute failed to open during a pass, and he ended up with some front-end damage after he drove off the end of the track. He still managed to qualify #9 with an 8.82. But once again, that set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier. This time, Bob Glidden qualified #1, and Glidden ran a strong 8.68 to put WJ on the trailer. That was followed by yet another NHRA Division 5 race win at Brainerd. Early in August, he went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car show, and his 8.86/154.90 qualified #6. He had a strange first-round race against "Dyno Don" Nicholson. Don had run 8.67/155 but lost to WJ, who did not get any time or speed record on his run. In the semifinals, his 8.80/154.37 lost to Lombardo's 8.62/156. He then won the final NHRA Division 5 race held at Thunder Road Dragway, Colorado. A final 9.39/145.37 beat Harrison. The best national event times were 8.640 at Seattle and 157.61 at Pomona.

Notes: After a great '76 season that saw Warren Johnson finish second in the NHRA Pro Stock Championship,'77 was a letdown for him as NHRA changed the weight breaks and was combination wasn't as competitive. '78 was an all-new ball game for WJ. Johnson started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with an 8.62/158.45 (Top Speed) behind Bob Glidden's 8.59/156. Unfortunately, his first-round 8.65/157 lost to Wally Booth's quick-leaving 8.68/154. He won the Phoenix Winter Championships a week later with a final round 8.74/156.24 that stopped Kevin Rotty's 8.90/154. He qualified #1 at 8.70/157.06. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.68/156 qualified #7. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.70/156 beat Don Campanello's 8.84/154. A second-round 8.71/156 beat Lee Shepherd's off-pace 9.31/116, but he fell to Bob Glidden in the semifinals. In April, WJ won the NHRA Division 5 opener held at Pueblo Motorsports Park. In the final, he cut a great light, and his 9.19/147.23 hung on to win over Shepherd's better 9.13/147. At the end of April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was just an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with an 8.66/159.29. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Glidden. In their race, WJ slowed to 8.98/155.97, which lost to Bob's 8.69/154. The following week, he made the trip to Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. It was another eight-car show, and his 8.81/152.44 qualified second behind Shepherd's 8.80/152. An 8.85/155.44 in the opening round beat Phil Nichols, and in the semifinal, another 8.80 at 154.90 took out Jerry Janke. He faced the similar Camaro of Sonny Bryant in the final. WJ's car slowed to an 8.99/155.97 that finished runner-up to Bryant's 8.88/156. An 8.63 at NHRA Columbus set Low ET. Also, WJ ran 8.66 at Indy 1978. Photo from 1977.

Notes: Warren spent most of his time this season in IHRA competition. He didn't run at the first few NHRA events but was at Columbus in June for the NHRA Springnationals. His 8.82 (speed unknown) qualified #14. Andy Mannarino fouled against him in the opening round, and Warren advanced with an 8.888/150.50. He fouled against Larry Lombardo in the second round and ran 9.061/150.75. That was WJ's only NHRA national event this year. We formerly listed 8.63/157.34 times for this year, but that did not occur at an NHRA national event. We need to confirm.

Notes: Johnson was at Rockingham in April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 8.27 best was the first alternate. After that, he went to Darlington on May 4 for the rain-delayed IHRA Dixie Nationals. He set Low ET there and beat Rickie Smith in the final. Won 1980 IHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol with an 8.139 at 166.05. He qualified #1 at 8.09 (Low ET) at 167.59. He then beat Pat Patterson and Billy Ewing in the first two rounds. Ronnie Sox's transmission broke in the semi-finals, so WJ ran 8.16/163.33 to advance. He stopped Smith again in the final. The next IHRA race was the Northern Nationals held at Milan Dragway in July.WJ qualified #4 for the eight-car field with an 8.19 but was upset by John Brumley in the first round. In the first week of August, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He once again set Low ET while qualifying #1 at 8.07/167.56. He ran another 8.07 in round two when Harold Denton fouled against him. But the car broke against "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the semi-final. Then came his dominating performance at Maryland International for the Mountain Motor Nationals. He qualified #1 at 7.92, then ran 7.91/167 over Lee Edwards' 8.20/165 in round two. That was followed by a 7.82/175.43 (Top Speed) in the semi-final over Bill Jenkins' 8.18. He went up against Pat Musi in the final. Musi was the only other car in the sevens at this race. But Musi slowed to 8.04/171 in the final that finished runner-up to WJ's 7.82/175.09. Shortly after that,he was at Brainerd for a four-car battle during the Quaker State Championships. He and Nicholson really put on a show. Both were running 7.8's, with WJ running 7.89/173.74 over John Hagan in one race. The final came down to Nicholson and WJ.Johnson fouled away a 7.90/174.41 (Top Speed),while "Dyno" ran 7.87/174 for the victory. In September, he reset the IHRA ET record to 7.91, qualifying at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Oper. His speed on the run was 173.41.The nearest anyone could come to him during qualifying was Smith a 8.02/174.WJ lasted until the semi-final before his off-pace 8.21/170 lost to eventual winner, Musi's 8.14/168. 1980 IHRA Pro Stock world champion. Johnson was the second member of the Holley Seven-Second club with his 7.91 at Rockingham 9/80. Did the team run a hint of nitrous in Budds Creek?

Notes: Warren did not race at all the NHRA national events in 1981. He spent a large part of the year running the Jerome Bradford Monte Carlo on the IHRA trail. WJ's first NHRA event was in Atlanta in April. He qualified number 7 at 8.583/157.34. In round one, he lost to Bob Glidden, 8.50/158 to 8.632/156.24. At the NHRA SpringNationals in Columbus, Warren qualified number 14 at 8.686/156.52. Warren could not make it for the first-round, and Paul Gentilozzi took his spot against Bob Ingles in the field. At the NHRA Summernationals in Englishtown, Warren qualified number 11 at 8.552/158.73. Unfortunately, that lined him up against Bob Glidden in round 1. Glidden took an 8.53/159 to 8.656/155.70 victory. At Indy for the US Nationals, Warren qualified number 16 at 8.616/160.14. In round 1, David Hutchins ended Warren's NHRA season with an 8.50/158 to 8.810/154.37 shellacking. This year, Warren used a 340-inch engine, and it was clear the smaller displacement was not giving him the results his standard big blocks did.

Notes: Warren debuted Jerome Bradford's Monte Carlo at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals on March 22. He qualified #2 with a 7.93/171. He picked up to a first-round 7.87/172 over Sam Carroll's 8.17/168. A 7.91 took care of Paul Gant in round two, and in the semifinal, he beat Roy Hill's 8.17/167 with a 7.92/172. Unfortunately for Johnson, when the car was weighed after his semifinal run, the car was found to be too light. He was disqualified, and Hill was reinstated into the final. At the second IHRA event, the Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham, he qualified #4. He made it into the semifinal before losing to Rickie Smith's 7.96/173 with an 8.05/173.74. On May 17, Warren grabbed a big win at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. He qualified #4 with an 8.01/173.41 behind the seven-second Mustangs of Smith, Ronnie Sox, and Harold Denton. Johnson dipped into the sevens with a first-round 7.97. In the second round, a 7.99 beat Hill's 8.24. Sox was caught napping in the semifinal, and Johnson's 8.10 beat Ronnie's 7.99. Denton's former Don Nicholson Mustang lost the clutch in the final, and Warren motored to a 7.99/171.42 victory. In June, he was runner-up to Smith at the IHRA World Nationals and then traveled to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 7.93/172.09. No one else ran quicker than 8.10. He beat Jim Feurer's Zephyr in the first round, with an 8.03/170.13. In the semifinal, an 8.13/169.18 beat Chuck Aronson. A final round 8.37/167 gave Warren the win over Gary Duckworth's 8.61/159. Another win came at the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he stopped Sox in the final. At Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals, Warren used an 8.08/171.42 to qualify #3. He ran 8.09, 8.23, and 8.09 to make the final against Sox. Ronnie reversed the finish of the previous IHRA race by downing WJ's 8.11/168.85 with a 7.99/172. Sox kept the heat on Johnson by once again beating WJ in the final at the IHRA US Open, where his final round 7.89/174 thumped the Monte Carlo's shut off 8.25/161.87. Warren was running 8.0's there while Ronnie was running 7.8's. Warren also won the Atlanta Mountain Motor Challenge in October. He qualified #2 with 7.91/174 and won a critical semifinal race against Smith. Smith ran a quicker 7.92 but lost to WJ's 7.94. Warren beat Gary Brown in the final for the title. The car was too radical for NHRA tech. The 7.93 at Gateway was the first AHRA seven. Won IHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol with a 7.999 at 171.42. Also ran 7.93 at AHRA Gateway Nats 81 and 7.90/174.20 in Atlanta Mountain Motor Challenge race on 10/10/81 (won over surprise finalist Gary Brown).

Notes: Low qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.762/179.28. | Johnson failed to qualify at the Gatornationals. That performance would soon change as the little Starfire was one of the most feared cars by the end of the '82 season. At the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, he made the show and lasted until the semifinals before fouling against Lee Shepherd. He won the second Division 2 race, winning with a holeshot 7.95/166.66 over Wyman Barnett's Arrow at 7.91/168. He qualified for the Cajun Nationals with a 7.93 which was good for the #4 spot in the field. Once again he lasted until the semifinal before losing to Frank Iaconio. At Columbus for the Springnationals, a 7.87/174.75 qualified #4. He beat Alban Gauthier in the first round, and an 8.02/171.10 beat Dave Hutchens in round two. But in the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.96 that lost to Bob Glidden's 8.01. He raced at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove in June, but lost to Andy Mannarino in the first round. Warren made his first NHRA final of the year at the Grandnationals on July 4 in Canada. He beat Glidden's 7.85 in the semifinal with a 7.84, but a final run of 7.88/175 was only good for the runner-up position to Shepherd's 7.74/178. He broke through for a win at the next event. The Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 7.91/175.09. A first-round 7.87 beat Sam Gianino. In round two he beat Don Campanello, and a 7.91 in the semifinal advanced when Joe Lepone fouled. In the final, WJ took a satisfying victory over Shepherd with a 7.90/174.41 beating Lee's close 7.91/173. This was Warren's first NHRA national event win. At the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Mich., a 7.85/173.07 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Shepherd. In that first-round race, Lee's 7.83/174 beat Johnson's 7.87/173.41. During this time, WJ was tearing up the troops on the IHRA Pro Stock tour as well. At the next NHRA event, the Northstar Nationals in Aug, Warren qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 7.89/174.75. A first-round 7.93/173.07 advanced over a fouling John Lingenfelter. But once again he lost in the semifinals. At the US Nationals, his 7.762 (Low ET) at a new NHRA speed record of 179.28 qualified #1. Unfortunately, he lost to Butch Leal in the first round. He grabbed another win on October 3 at Fremont for the Golden Gate Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.660 and also ran 181.08, becoming the first NHRA Pro Stock to run 180. Once again he met and beat Shepherd in the final; this time his 7.69/179.28 beat Lee's 7.74/179. He wrapped up the NHRA season by setting Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.73, setting Top Speed at 178.92, and winning the World Finals at OCIR with a final round 7.78/176 over the Texas Camaro's (you know who) 7.86/177. Even though the NHRA season had ended he still grabbed off more wins such as the Turkey Trot National Open at Orlando Florida in November. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.89/178.57. He was the only pro stocker in the sevens at the event. A first-round 8.03/176.47 beat Billy Ewing and a semifinal 7.92/177.86 beat Reid Whisnant. In the final, he beat a fouling Harry Del Prete. He also won the Snowbird National Open at DeSoto. A 7.84/175.43 (Top Speed) qualified #1. A first-round 7.83 beat Ewing and another 7.83 beat Whisnant's 8.12. In the final, he set Low ET with a 7.79/175.78 over a fouling Bubba Corzine at 7.96/172.

Notes: Warren's little Starfire was a tough competitor on the IHRA trail in '82. He didn't run at Darlington for the season opening Winternationals, but he won the IHRA Pro-Am race at Rockingham on May 2. He qualified #6 and made his way into the final to face Rickie Smith. Both he and Smith ran 7.92 there. At Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, he ran 7.89 to qualify #4. He made it into the semifinals before fouling against Smith. He and Rickie met again at the next IHRA event, the Summernationals at Bristol. This time they met in the finals and Smith took the win. Warren was in the final at the next IHRA race as well, the Northern Nationals, where he got another runner-up finish. This time Ronnie Sox beat him in the final. WJ was dividing his time between the NHRA cars (and doing quite well), and the IHRA "monster motor" cars. In September he was at the IHRA US Open, where he set Low ET at 7.65 and went on to win over Sox in the final. - Ron Howard

Notes: Warren did not compete at the NHRA Winternationals. The reason for this was that NHRA did not approve his cylinder heads. He was at Moroso Motorsports Park for the NHRA Division 2 race held shortly after. This is where he debuted his new Cutlass and showed up with a new 18-wheeler to haul it in. It was an eight-car show, and WJ qualified #2 with a 7.91/174.41. He won his opening race over Russell Jung with a 7.85/175.09 (Low ET and Top Speed). Unfortunately, in the semifinal, his late 7.91/174.41 lost to Wayne Ellison's 8.04/171. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 7.71/178.57. He slept on the line in the first round, and his 7.73/177 lost to Carlton Phillips' 7.77/176. I believe he was still running the 500 cubic inch engine at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. His 7.77/177.86 qualified second to Lee Shepherd's 7.71/178.A 7.87/172.08 beat Phillips 8.03/174 in the opening round. He reached the final, where he ran Shepherd. The two had a good race, but Lee's 7.69/181 got the better of WJ's 7.72/180.36. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car field, and his 7.84/174.75 qualified #4. In the first round, he faced Phillips again, and WJ's 7.87/172.74 beat Carlton's 8.04/172. But in the semifinals, eventual winner Shepherd's 7.82/175 beat his 7.86/174.08. He had an interesting day at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He actually got beat twice. He lost to Shepherd in the semifinal, but Lee forgot to weigh in after the race, and WJ was reinstated. He went up against Rickie Smith in the final, losing for the second time.WJ then went to Baton Rouge at the end of May for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 7.69 (Low ET) at 177.86 qualified #1. In the opening round, his 7.75/177.16 beat Joe Lepone's 7.92/174. In the semifinal, the pesky Camaro from Texas beat him, Lee's 7.82/177 beat WJ's late 7.77/177.86. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He always ran well at Bristol, and '83 was no exception. His 7.86/178 qualified #3. His best run came in round two, where a 7.83/181.45 beat Roy Hill's Capri. But once again, he lost to Shepherd in the semifinal. WJ won the World Finals at OCIR, his first in exactly one year. WJ qualified his Hurst Olds third with a 7.658 and, in eliminations, ran 7.68, 7.70, 7.71, and 7.69, defeating Rickie Smith, Jerry Eckman, Bob Glidden, and Lee Shepherd (on a holeshot to Shepherd's 7.68). Warren's best NHRA speed was 181.08 at Indy.

Notes: WJ entered the season strong as he had won the season-ending NHRA World Finals in '83 and was looking for more in '84. At the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #3 with a 7.71. Johnson lasted until the semifinals before he fouled against Frank Iaconio. Still, he set Top Speed of the meet for the Pro Stock class at 180.36. He showed his stuff at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals, there a 7.662/181.81 qualified #4, and he went on to win. A 7.682/182.55 (Top Speed and a new NHRA record) beat a fouling Johnny Downey. His 7.677/181.45 took out Don Campanello, who also fouled in round two. In the semifinals, WJ slowed to 7.747/172.74, but it was still enough to beat Butch Leal's 7.75/175. This put him into the final against Iaconio. Warren made his best run of the weekend, a 7.643/180.72, to get the victory over Frank's 7.73/180. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. WJ set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 7.70/181.81. In round one, he beat Mark Yuill with a 7.75/179.64, but he lost to Lee Shepherd in round two. It was not without controversy as Shepherd's Camaro lost its hood on the run. Warren insisted on having the car weighed to assure that it still weighed in at the legal 2,350 lbs. Even without the hood, the Texas Camaro was legal. He was the top qualifier again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge with a 7.65 (Low ET) at 181.45. Unfortunately, he lost to Roy Hill in the first round. He had Low ET and Top Speed at the NHRA Springnationals while qualifying #1 with a 7.71/181.08. But once again, he lost early; this time, Gordie Rivera gated him in the second round, and his 7.83 beat Johnson's quicker 7.74. These early losses would come back to haunt Warren and the end of the year for the points championship. He pulled it all together at the NHRA Grandnationals, where a 7.68/182.55 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Joe Lepone, Ken Dondero, and Don Coonce to meet with Bob Glidden in the final. Bob's T-Bird was getting stronger as the year progressed, and in the final, his 7.69/180 narrowly lost to WJ's 7.68/182.18. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, Warren was finally out-qualified for the first time in four races. His 7.68/180.72 (Top Speed) was second only to Glidden's 7.67. He beat Rich Marino in round one, before losing to Shepherd in the second round. WJ was back on top at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where he set an 8.02 track record at 172.74 in qualifying #1. He beat Gene Fasching, Leal, and in the semifinals, he beat Glidden's 8.13/169 with an 8.06/171.10. In the finals, he met Shepherd. This was Johnson's day as he won with an 8.07/171.75 over Lee's 8.14/166. In August, Warren took his eighth NHRA National victory at the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. He had "only" qualified #3 with a 7.76/181.08 (Top Speed), but he beat Jerry Eckman, Coonce, and Glidden to meet Shepherd again in the final. It was a good race, but Lee's 7.76/177 finished runner-up to Johnson's 7.75/180.36. He was sure closing the points gap between himself and Shepherd with his late-season surge, and it continued at the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.66/182.18, and he improved to 7.63 in the first round, over Coonce. In round two, a 7.64/182.18 beat Ronnie Manchester, and in the semis, another 7.63 beat Rivera. In the final, he faced Glidden. Bob had been running about a tenth slower in eliminations, but in the final, he picked up to a 7.65/180 that almost beat WJ's 7.63/181.45. Surprisingly, for only the third NHRA National event of '84, Warren failed to get Top Speed of the meet. It looked like he had a good chance of winning the NHRA Pro Stock Championship going into the World Finals with a 42 point advantage over Shepherd. A 7.75/181.08 qualified #5, but things took an unexpected turn in the first round. Matched against Rickie Smith, the Oldsmobile could only muster a 7.97/175.09 that lost to Smith's 7.89/174. The season and any hopes for the '84 world championship came to a close. Still, it was an excellent season for WJ, his best since entering Pro Stock with five wins and a second-place finish in the points standings. Photo from Baton Rouge 84, where WJ was the low qualifier.

Notes: Warren qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.65/180.50. He beat Joe Lepone in the first round, with a 7.70/180.94 while a second round 7.69/179.49 beat Rickie Smith's T-Bird. In the semifinals, Butch Leal fouled away a 7.72/180 while Johnson moved into the final with a 7.73/179.28. There he met up with Bob Glidden. Bob was on a roll here, resetting the NHRA ET record no less than three times during the event as well as setting a new speed record so the final was no surprise when Glidden got the victory with a 7.58/184 over WJ's 7.77/179.21. At the NHRA Gatornationals, WJ qualified #2 with a 7.63/183.00 just behind Glidden's 7.61/183. These two would once again work their way to the final. WJ ran 7.55 in all three of his rounds over Ken Dondero, a fouling Nick Nikolis over Gordie Rivera in the semifinal. His best speed was 184.35 in the semis. This time going into the final it was WJ who had the edge. Glidden had run 7.55 and 7.57 in the last two rounds so it would still be close. WJ got the victory with his slowest run of eliminations, a 7.60/183.82 that was still enough to cover Bob's 7.68/170. The battle between these two continued at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There WJ set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.65 at 181.08. A first-round 7.73/181.07 beat Gene Fasching, but in round two he came up against Glidden who qualified poorly (#13). Bob beat him with a 7.72/179 to WJ's 7.79/179.14. Glidden went to the final only to lose to Butch Leal. Next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was to be another WJ vs Glidden final. Warren qualified #2 with a 7.54/184.19, not behind Glidden, but behind Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison Camaro also at 7.54. Bob was third with a 7.58. WJ ran a first-round 7.63/181.81 to beat Don Coonce and in round two his 7.68/178.64 advanced when Jerry Eckman fouled. In the semifinals, his 7.62/181.52 sent Dondero packing. Bob had run 7.68/182 in his semifinal win so it would still be close. WJ picked up his second NHRA victory of the year with a 7.61/178.64 beating Glidden's 7.67/183. He didn't have to wait long for his third as it came at the next NHRA race, the Springnationals. There WJ qualified #3 with a 7.64 with a track record speed of 181.52. A first-round 7.70/179.78 beat Sam Gianino while in round two Rivera fouled against him and WJ moved on with a 7.64/180.65. In the semifinals, his 7.66/180 stopped Leal's 7.74/178. In the final he was up against Allen. Bruce had problems and WJ took his twelfth NHRA National event title with a 7.68/180.44. Where was Glidden? He lost to Leal in round two. Warren made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals where he dominated the race. He set track records of 7.61 and 180.72 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. Another 7.61 in the first round, beat Charlie Garrett and in the semifinals his 7.65/180.00 took out Dondero's 7.79/177. In the final he met Ronnie Manchester. Ronnie tried hard, but his 7.85/172 finished second best to WJ's 7.64/180.00. But then, just like that, the magic stopped. He would not win another NHRA National event in '85, and he would make only one more final round. Warren went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #2 with a 7.53/185.26 (Top Speed), but his first-round 7.62/180.36 lost to a quick-leaving Don Campanello who beat him with a 7.68/180. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #2 again with a 7.55/183.29. He lasted until the second round. Warren was #2 in qualifying again at the NHRA Mile High Nationals with an 8.00/172.41. He won his first two rounds with runs of 8.04/172.08 and 8.01/172.08 over Fasching and Frank Iaconio. In the semifinals, he became the only other Pro Stock driver to run in the seven's besides Glidden here when he ran 7.99/172.74. Unfortunately, Bob was in the other lane running 7.96/173 to win. He also made it into the semifinals at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 7.67/180.72, and he beat Dempsey hardy in round one, with a 7.59/182.55. In the second round, Stan Mizell fouled and WJ advanced with a 7.68/182.55. Once again he faced Glidden in the semifinals and once again Glidden came out on top with a 7.57/183 to Warren's 7.60/183.67. At Indy, he was in the Pro Stock Challenge race. A race for the top qualifiers in all NHRA National events for the past twelve months. It was an eight-car field and WJ's 7.60/185.03 in the first round, advanced when Rivera fouled. In the semifinals, WJ fouled away a 7.66/180.14 against Leal who won with a 7.67/180. For the actual NHRA US Nationals, a 7.60/184.04 qualified #3. In the first round his 7.63/184.19 beat Fasching. In the second round, Rivera's 7.80/176 lost to his 7.60/182.11, but a strong 7.61/182.40 lost to Glidden's holeshot 7.66/181. As you can see, even though he was not winning, he was still running strong. The next stop was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. A 7.52/183.59 qualified #2 behind Glidden's record-setting 7.49. He beat Dondero in the first round, by a tenth,7.57/183.15 to 7.67/179. In round two he carried over the same performance advantage over Iaconio with a 7.58/182.77 beating Frank's 7.68/180. It got closer in the semifinals where WJ's 7.61/182.33 beat Tony Christian's 7.65/180. This put Warren into the final against Allen. Bruce was sharp on the light and his 7.59/179 got the victory over WJ's quicker 7.57/182.70.

Notes: Ran 7.601/183.67 at Pomona Winters 2/86. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | WJ started his season by finishing runner-up to Frank Iaconio at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 for the show with a 7.60/183.67 then got by Bob Glidden's 7.55/176 in the opening round with a 7.53/184.04. Another 7.53 at 183.87 beat Bruce Allen's 7.64/179 in round two and a 7.58/184.42 in the semifinals took out Nick Nikolis' 7.62/181. This put him into the final against Iaconio's T-Bird. Warren was definitely the favorite as Frank was stuck in the 7.6's during eliminations. But in the final, Frank improved to 7.56/185 to win over Johnson's 7.77/181.45. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he faced Glidden again in the first round, as he had only qualified #9 with a 7.61/185.26 while Glidden had taken the pole with a track record 7.49. This time WJ fouled and his 7.79/183.29 lost to Bob's 7.51/183. Atlanta was NHRA's next stop for the Southern Nationals. Warren set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.53/184.80. Bob was right behind at 7.54/183. It seemed that these two would meet in the final and it should have worked out that was as Warren's 7.57/184 beat Allen in the semifinals, but Glidden crashed in his semifinal race while beating Butch Leal. So, in the final WJ soloed for the victory with a 16.91/51.32. He cleaned house at Baton Rouge as well for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 7.51/186.45 set both ends of the track record in qualifying #1, and he then ran 7.68/182.11 over Ken Dondero's 7.71/181. A round two 7.63/183.78 beat Allen's quicker 7.61/176 and in the semifinals a 7.60/180.90 aced out Joe Lepone's 7.62/178. This put him into the final against Leal. Butch pushed the tree to hard and fouled while Warren got another win with a 7.74/172.81. He almost got three in a row at the NHRA Springnationals. Warren's 7.52 (at 184.16) in qualifying #1 was a new National Trail track record. He then ran 7.60/182.22, 7.64/182.77, and 7.61/183.11 while beating Gordie Rivera, Allen, and Lepone (in that order) to reach the final. Johnson faced Leal for the title and WJ fouled away a 7.65 while Butch's 7.61 got him the win. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and WJ qualified #1 with a 7.53/185.18 (Low ET and Top Speed). He beat Dondero in the first round, but was upset by Joe Clark in the semifinals when his 7.77/182.55 lost to Clark's 7.76/177.51. Low ET and Top Speed was his at the NHRA Grandnationals where his 7.51/185.18 in qualifying got him the marks. But in the first round, he slept on the line and his 7.54/185.03 lost to Rivera's 7.62/179. Another win followed that where he won the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. There he qualified #2 with a 7.45/186.33 behind Glidden's 7.44/186. Warren held a lead in the NHRA points standings, but Glidden had recovered from his Atlanta crash and was now a threat. Both drivers made it into the semifinals where WJ's 7.45 beat Leal while Don Coonce upset Glidden. The final saw Johnson run 7.55/184.80 for the victory over Coonce's 7.63/180. Unfortunately, that was the last win for WJ in '86 as Glidden won all the remaining races except one. Warren still ran well, but Bob had the edge at this point. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals, they qualified one, two with Bob's 7.84/175 getting the pole over WJ's 7.89/175.88 (Top Speed). Of course, the two worked their way to the final with Johnson running 8.00/174.01 over Jerry Eckman, 7.98/173.84 over Lepone in round two, and a semifinal 7.98/174.18 took out Allen's 8.02/171. In the final, his 8.03/173.41 finished runner-up to Bob's 7.92/174. He lost in the first round, at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. There he qualified #3 with 7.66/181.81, but a first-round 7.76 lost to Stan Mizell's 7.72. Next stop was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Warren became the first 190 mph NHRA Pro Stock when he ran 7.50/190.07 to qualify #4. The speed was backed up for a new NHRA record. As good as his speed was, his ET was off as Glidden ran 7.37/189 to qualify first. Warren's 7.48/189.27 in the first round, beat Sam Gianino, but an off-pace 7.85/184.76 lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.64/180 in round two. It was then back to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. His 7.45/186.79 qualified #2 behind the T-Bird from Indiana that ran 7.41/187. But in the first round, Don Campanello's holeshot 7.58/180 beat WJ's 7.57/186.14. NHRA's next stop was at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. Warren's 7.51/185.79 took his customary #2 spot behind Glidden's 7.45/185. In the opening round, Mizell fouled against him and Johnson advanced with a 7.62/184.61. In the second round, Don Beverley fouled and Johnson's 7.55/184.53 moved on. He drilled Lepone in the semifinals where his 7.66/183.26 beat Joe's quicker 7.58/181. This put him into the final against Glidden. Bob had the performance advantage and Warren took a chance on the tree and fouled away a 7.56/183 while Glidden picked up his 50th NHRA trophy. Warren watched as his points lead over Glidden dwindled.

Notes: Warren Johnson started the '87 season by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #2 with a 7.43/188.20 (Top Speed and a new track record), behind Bob Glidden's 7.42/186. In the first round, he ran another 7.43 at 187.50 to beat Kenny Delco. In round two, he stopped Gordie Rivera's 7.50/183 with a 7.46/186.60. He then set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.403 (track record) at 186.91 to beat Larry Morgan. He faced Butch Leal in the final, and Leal hadn't been out of the 7.5s all day. But Leal was always sharp on the lights, so it would still be a good race. But Butch didn't get his usual starting line advantage, and Warren's 7.43/187.22 got the win over Leal's 7.52/184. After such a great start to the season, it was surprising that Warren failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was plagued by tire shake and then dropped a valve. His best of 7.56/187.03 was good for the third alternate. He made up for it by winning April's NHRA Winston Invitational race at the Texas Motorplex. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.33/187.30 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 7.31/189. Johnson then ran 7.37/187.42 over Don Coonce's 7.47/185 and 7.32/187.98 to beat Jerry Eckman's 7.42/184. He faced Joe Lepone in the final, and Warren's 7.38/187.57 earned the title over Lepone's 7.51/183. He then went into a long dry spell. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, he qualified #5 with a 7.49/186.10, and an opening-round 7.44/185.83 beat Steve Schmidt's 7.47/185. But in round two, his 7.55/184.95 lost to Glidden's 7.43/187. He debuted a new Don Ness-built car at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He ran 7.56/185.33 to qualify #5. A first-round 7.54/185.18 beat alternate Geoffrey Bailey, but Glidden again beat him in round two. Warren's tire-shaking 7.79/180.39 lost to Bob's 7.52/185. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals at Columbus. There, Warren's 7.53/182.74 qualified #3, but in the first round, both he and Bruce Allen ran 7.66 (WJ at 182.62), but Allen got to the stripe first. Although it wasn't an NHRA National event, Johnson got a badly needed win at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove in June. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with a 7.48/184.80. He made it look easy by beating Joe Sway's 7.67/175 in the opening round with a 7.55/182.92. A semifinal 7.53/183.61 took out Ken Koretsky's 7.63/183. In the final, he dropped Lepone's 7.72/178 with a 7.56/183.67. It was a much-needed boost, but it didn't last for long. At the NHRA Grandnationals, he "only" qualified #10 with a 7.62/185.83. He improved to 7.59/182.03 in the first round, when Eckman fouled away a 7.53 against him. In round two, his 7.62/184.50 lost to Leal's 7.53/184. Englishtown was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Summernationals. Warren qualified #2 with a 7.49/185.60. He beat Coonce's 7.65/180 in the first round, with a 7.59/184.23, but lost to Larry Morgan in round two. NHRA's eighth race of the season was its Mile High Nationals, held at the end of July in Denver.WJ ran 7.98/174.41 to qualify #6. He got some "revenge" on Morgan in round one, where his 8.02/173.31 stopped Larry's 8.07/170, but WJ fouled away an 8.07 in round two against Allen, who also ran 8.07 to advance.

Notes: Also Ran IHRA, which ran at 500 inches in 1988. Won 1988 IHRA Spring Nationals with a 7.500 at 184.35 and the IHRA Fall Nationals with a 7.426 at 186.18. Did Warren run 190.67 at the Winston All-Stars race in April? We need to confirm whether this was a different car than the Cutlass Ciera WJ started the year with.
