Notes: In 1969 Gene Snow had R&B Race Cars build a narrowed Charger with direct drive and hired Jake Johnston to run the car on the match race circuit. Gene was one of the first funny car racers to seriously evaluate direct drive and was quite successful. Jake would drive the Blue Max in 1970, but would return to drive for Snow in '71 and '72. Molded in color like a boat.

Notes: Captured top honors at the famed Manufacturers Meet at Orange County International Raceway, where Johnston ran the lowest elapsed time in class history, 6.72, and, in the final, beat Rich Siroonian in Big John Mazmanian's Barracuda on a holeshot, 6.89 to 6.88. Also, Top Speed at the 1970 Winternationals at 203.61. - Phil Burgess, NHRA | Jake started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals on January 25. He made it into the finals by beating Dick Harrell's 7.92 with a 7.70. In round two, Don Schumacher broke a transmission and the "Max" advanced with a 7.77. He got another break in the semifinals when Gene Snow's car started leaking oil and was shut off on the line. Johnston soloed with a 9.16. In the final he was matched against Tommy Grove's strong Cammer powered Mustang. Jake ran a 7.67/198.23 that finished runner-up to Grove's 7.54/196. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 7.55/201.34 qualified #3. He lasted until round two where Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car dropped him with a 7.44 to Jake's quicker 7.40/203.61 (Top Speed). On February 15 he was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals. A first-round 7.32 beat Dick Bourgeois' 7.42 in Don Cook's Corvette. But in round two he fouled against Jim Liberman. The following week (February 22), he won the third OCIR All-Pro event. Johnston actually lost to Gene Conway's 7.33/200 in the first round, with a quicker 7.28/181.08, but he got back in on the "break rule" as Low ET loser when Dave Beebe broke. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 7.26/170.77 over a fouling Clyde Morgan. In the final, he ran Conway again and a 7.37/189.47 took the win over Gene's quicker 7.35/201. | Best NHRA times were 7.361/201.34. Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/70

Notes: Jake's new ride for '72 was this Charger built on a 118" Logghe chassis. Fiberglass Ltd built the body. It used a 426 Hemi with a Moldex stroker crank that brought it up to 474 cubic inches. The blue car 6.687/209.30 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge 8/72. He ran 6.518/222.77 at NHRA Amarillo 1972 in a runner-up finish for his best NHRA national event times.

Notes: Johnston signed on with Cragar on a new project, a Funny Car that ran on bottled air that was pressure-fed into the manifold in place of a supercharger. According to the May 1974 issue of Drag Racing USA, the system, developed by Bob Keane, fed a mixture of pure alcohol and cold air into the engine through onboard tanks. The car would be fired, do its burnout, and launch on just the alcohol, but the blown system would kick in seamlessly shortly after the launch. Horsepower was advertised at about 2,000 at 30psi of boost, with the boost being scalable up top 45psi. Benefits were reduced engine heat (temperatures at the manifold were -10 degrees, which kept the engine and the oil at “warm”); a fuel cost savings of 80 percent (alcohol over nitro); and, of course, the removal of the potential for devastating blower explosions and/or blower belt breakage. Notes: Photo from 1975 US Nationals. Jake drove for Pisano at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He was substituting for Sush Matsubara due to injuries Sush had received from a motorcycle crash the week before. The car suffered a bad fire at the Bakersfield March Meet. Jake qualified the Vega with a 6.46/203.16 for the #8 spot in the twelve car field. A first-round 6.29/225.56 beat Gordie Bonin's 6.46/223, but in round two, his 6.71 lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde's 6.46 in the "Eastern Raider.” Unfortunately, at the top end of the track, a gasket let go and the car went up in flames. Jake got it stopped and got out OK, but the car was charred pretty good. It didn't take the team long to repair the damage as just two weeks later (March 16), they were at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West. It was a sixteen-car show and Johnston qualified #4 with a 6.70. He made his way to the final by beating Leroy Chadderton with a 6.86/208.81 followed by a 6.90/187.50 in round two over Bob Pickett who was driving the "Lil' Demon.” A semifinal 6.95/186.33 trailered Gary Densham and moved him into the final. His final round opponent was the #1 qualifier (6.57) Tom McEwen. The edge would have to go to McEwen as he ran a best of 6.58 during eliminations. The final turned out to be close; Jake improved to 6.78/220.04, but still lost to McEwen's 6.77/213. He lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round, at the Northern Nationals at Fremont. In May, Jake won the Irwindale Fox Hunt race, stopping Gary Burgin in the final. Another win at Irwindale came in June at its Doubleheader event. It was an eight-car field and Johnston beat Densham and Fred Mooneyham to reach the final. There he faced Jim Dunn. The two had a good race with Jake's 6.57/223.26 (Top Speed) getting the measure of Dunn's 6.67/220. Jake qualified #13 at Indy at 6.368/223.32. He lost a close first-round match to Gene Snow, 6.283/230.17 to 6.322/214.28. The team qualified #10 at Ontario at 6.331/225.00, but again, lost in the first round. Notes: Finished number 8 in NHRA championship points in 1976. Photo shows the Jake Johnston driven, Revell sponsored "Pisano & Matsubara" Chevy Monza in the staging lanes at Indianapolis Raceway Park during the 1976 NHRA US Nationals. Jake qualified #5 with a 6.148/228.42 pass and lost in the first round, of eliminations to Gordie Bonin when his 6.552/191.08 was no match for Gordie's 6.347/225.56. - Tom Nagy | Jake debuted the new Monza for Pisano and Matsubara in January at the Sixth annual Nitro Bowl at Fremont. The race was run differently with all 14 cars making three runs and the winner based on the number of wins in competition. Johnston set Low ET in his first-round win with a 6.45 over Roger Garten, who was driving the "Warhorse." In his second race, he got out of shape and shut off, losing to Ed McCulloch. The team hurt some parts on that run and was unable to run their third race. He then went to OCIR for the season opener. A 7.03 was all that was needed to advance in the first round, when Don Prudhomme failed to show and a 6.39/203.16 got around McCulloch in the next round. In the final, Jake faced off against John Lombardo, who debuted a new Mustang II here. He wasn't even supposed to be in the show, but when the "Hawaiian" blew during warmups, Lombardo filled in. Jake tried hard in the final, but there was no stopping John this day as he had earlier set Low ET at 6.30 and he almost duplicated it with a 6.31 in the final to take the win. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.228/204.54 qualified #4. A first-round 6.365/202.24 beat a blower-popping Dale Pulde, but in round two, Johnston slowed to an off-pace 6.822/169.81 that lost to Gene Snow's 6.623/212.76. In March, Jake competed at OCIR's Fox Hunt race. There were 27 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Johnston's 6.62 got the #8 spot. He failed to reach the final, but ran well. He was back at OCIR on May 8 for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #5, forcing him to run low qualifier Lombardo in the first round. John smoked the tires while Jake ran 6.37/218 to advance. In the semifinals, he outran Tom McEwen's 6.50/206 with a 6.42/223. He faced the "Blue Max" driven by Raymond Beadle in the final and Beadle took the win with a 6.28/227. The team qualified #9 at Ontario at 6.327/222.22. They lost a first-round decision to Don Prudhomme, 6.211/222.22 to 6.421/225.56. Formerly listed 229.00 best speed. We need confirmation of that.

Notes: Jake qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 6.364/223. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round, 6.296/201.76 to 8.978/80.93. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Johnston qualified #2 with a 6.20 and lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against Pulde. He then went to OCIR for a sixteen-car show. While he didn't reach the final, he did run a best of 6.27. On March 27, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 opener. He ran well there, lasting until the semifinal before the eventual winner Don Prudhomme, beat him. He also competed at Irwindale's 64-car show on April 9, but he failed in his attempt to reach the final. Jake was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Rain postponed the race until June 4, and Johnston's 6.430/224.43 (Top Speed) qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind John Lombardo's 6.42. He beat Eddie Pauling in the opening round with a 6.61/172.41 to a 6.91/145.65. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires, and his 6.97/151.51 lost to eventual winner Johnny White's 6.43/213.77. Joe Pisano did not run any additional NHRA events this year. Formerly listed 233.00 mph. We need confirmation of that (Bakersfield?)
