Notes: Warren qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.65/180.50. He beat Joe Lepone in the first round, with a 7.70/180.94 while a second round 7.69/179.49 beat Rickie Smith's T-Bird. In the semifinals, Butch Leal fouled away a 7.72/180 while Johnson moved into the final with a 7.73/179.28. There he met up with Bob Glidden. Bob was on a roll here, resetting the NHRA ET record no less than three times during the event as well as setting a new speed record so the final was no surprise when Glidden got the victory with a 7.58/184 over WJ's 7.77/179.21. At the NHRA Gatornationals, WJ qualified #2 with a 7.63/183.00 just behind Glidden's 7.61/183. These two would once again work their way to the final. WJ ran 7.55 in all three of his rounds over Ken Dondero, a fouling Nick Nikolis over Gordie Rivera in the semifinal. His best speed was 184.35 in the semis. This time going into the final it was WJ who had the edge. Glidden had run 7.55 and 7.57 in the last two rounds so it would still be close. WJ got the victory with his slowest run of eliminations, a 7.60/183.82 that was still enough to cover Bob's 7.68/170. The battle between these two continued at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There WJ set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.65 at 181.08. A first-round 7.73/181.07 beat Gene Fasching, but in round two he came up against Glidden who qualified poorly (#13). Bob beat him with a 7.72/179 to WJ's 7.79/179.14. Glidden went to the final only to lose to Butch Leal. Next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was to be another WJ vs Glidden final. Warren qualified #2 with a 7.54/184.19, not behind Glidden, but behind Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison Camaro also at 7.54. Bob was third with a 7.58. WJ ran a first-round 7.63/181.81 to beat Don Coonce and in round two his 7.68/178.64 advanced when Jerry Eckman fouled. In the semifinals, his 7.62/181.52 sent Dondero packing. Bob had run 7.68/182 in his semifinal win so it would still be close. WJ picked up his second NHRA victory of the year with a 7.61/178.64 beating Glidden's 7.67/183. He didn't have to wait long for his third as it came at the next NHRA race, the Springnationals. There WJ qualified #3 with a 7.64 with a track record speed of 181.52. A first-round 7.70/179.78 beat Sam Gianino while in round two Rivera fouled against him and WJ moved on with a 7.64/180.65. In the semifinals, his 7.66/180 stopped Leal's 7.74/178. In the final he was up against Allen. Bruce had problems and WJ took his twelfth NHRA National event title with a 7.68/180.44. Where was Glidden? He lost to Leal in round two. Warren made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals where he dominated the race. He set track records of 7.61 and 180.72 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. Another 7.61 in the first round, beat Charlie Garrett and in the semifinals his 7.65/180.00 took out Dondero's 7.79/177. In the final he met Ronnie Manchester. Ronnie tried hard, but his 7.85/172 finished second best to WJ's 7.64/180.00. But then, just like that, the magic stopped. He would not win another NHRA National event in '85, and he would make only one more final round. Warren went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #2 with a 7.53/185.26 (Top Speed), but his first-round 7.62/180.36 lost to a quick-leaving Don Campanello who beat him with a 7.68/180. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #2 again with a 7.55/183.29. He lasted until the second round. Warren was #2 in qualifying again at the NHRA Mile High Nationals with an 8.00/172.41. He won his first two rounds with runs of 8.04/172.08 and 8.01/172.08 over Fasching and Frank Iaconio. In the semifinals, he became the only other Pro Stock driver to run in the seven's besides Glidden here when he ran 7.99/172.74. Unfortunately, Bob was in the other lane running 7.96/173 to win. He also made it into the semifinals at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 7.67/180.72, and he beat Dempsey hardy in round one, with a 7.59/182.55. In the second round, Stan Mizell fouled and WJ advanced with a 7.68/182.55. Once again he faced Glidden in the semifinals and once again Glidden came out on top with a 7.57/183 to Warren's 7.60/183.67. At Indy, he was in the Pro Stock Challenge race. A race for the top qualifiers in all NHRA National events for the past twelve months. It was an eight-car field and WJ's 7.60/185.03 in the first round, advanced when Rivera fouled. In the semifinals, WJ fouled away a 7.66/180.14 against Leal who won with a 7.67/180. For the actual NHRA US Nationals, a 7.60/184.04 qualified #3. In the first round his 7.63/184.19 beat Fasching. In the second round, Rivera's 7.80/176 lost to his 7.60/182.11, but a strong 7.61/182.40 lost to Glidden's holeshot 7.66/181. As you can see, even though he was not winning, he was still running strong. The next stop was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. A 7.52/183.59 qualified #2 behind Glidden's record-setting 7.49. He beat Dondero in the first round, by a tenth,7.57/183.15 to 7.67/179. In round two he carried over the same performance advantage over Iaconio with a 7.58/182.77 beating Frank's 7.68/180. It got closer in the semifinals where WJ's 7.61/182.33 beat Tony Christian's 7.65/180. This put Warren into the final against Allen. Bruce was sharp on the light and his 7.59/179 got the victory over WJ's quicker 7.57/182.70.

Notes: Ran 7.601/183.67 at Pomona Winters 2/86. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | WJ started his season by finishing runner-up to Frank Iaconio at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 for the show with a 7.60/183.67 then got by Bob Glidden's 7.55/176 in the opening round with a 7.53/184.04. Another 7.53 at 183.87 beat Bruce Allen's 7.64/179 in round two and a 7.58/184.42 in the semifinals took out Nick Nikolis' 7.62/181. This put him into the final against Iaconio's T-Bird. Warren was definitely the favorite as Frank was stuck in the 7.6's during eliminations. But in the final, Frank improved to 7.56/185 to win over Johnson's 7.77/181.45. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he faced Glidden again in the first round, as he had only qualified #9 with a 7.61/185.26 while Glidden had taken the pole with a track record 7.49. This time WJ fouled and his 7.79/183.29 lost to Bob's 7.51/183. Atlanta was NHRA's next stop for the Southern Nationals. Warren set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.53/184.80. Bob was right behind at 7.54/183. It seemed that these two would meet in the final and it should have worked out that was as Warren's 7.57/184 beat Allen in the semifinals, but Glidden crashed in his semifinal race while beating Butch Leal. So, in the final WJ soloed for the victory with a 16.91/51.32. He cleaned house at Baton Rouge as well for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 7.51/186.45 set both ends of the track record in qualifying #1, and he then ran 7.68/182.11 over Ken Dondero's 7.71/181. A round two 7.63/183.78 beat Allen's quicker 7.61/176 and in the semifinals a 7.60/180.90 aced out Joe Lepone's 7.62/178. This put him into the final against Leal. Butch pushed the tree to hard and fouled while Warren got another win with a 7.74/172.81. He almost got three in a row at the NHRA Springnationals. Warren's 7.52 (at 184.16) in qualifying #1 was a new National Trail track record. He then ran 7.60/182.22, 7.64/182.77, and 7.61/183.11 while beating Gordie Rivera, Allen, and Lepone (in that order) to reach the final. Johnson faced Leal for the title and WJ fouled away a 7.65 while Butch's 7.61 got him the win. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and WJ qualified #1 with a 7.53/185.18 (Low ET and Top Speed). He beat Dondero in the first round, but was upset by Joe Clark in the semifinals when his 7.77/182.55 lost to Clark's 7.76/177.51. Low ET and Top Speed was his at the NHRA Grandnationals where his 7.51/185.18 in qualifying got him the marks. But in the first round, he slept on the line and his 7.54/185.03 lost to Rivera's 7.62/179. Another win followed that where he won the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. There he qualified #2 with a 7.45/186.33 behind Glidden's 7.44/186. Warren held a lead in the NHRA points standings, but Glidden had recovered from his Atlanta crash and was now a threat. Both drivers made it into the semifinals where WJ's 7.45 beat Leal while Don Coonce upset Glidden. The final saw Johnson run 7.55/184.80 for the victory over Coonce's 7.63/180. Unfortunately, that was the last win for WJ in '86 as Glidden won all the remaining races except one. Warren still ran well, but Bob had the edge at this point. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals, they qualified one, two with Bob's 7.84/175 getting the pole over WJ's 7.89/175.88 (Top Speed). Of course, the two worked their way to the final with Johnson running 8.00/174.01 over Jerry Eckman, 7.98/173.84 over Lepone in round two, and a semifinal 7.98/174.18 took out Allen's 8.02/171. In the final, his 8.03/173.41 finished runner-up to Bob's 7.92/174. He lost in the first round, at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. There he qualified #3 with 7.66/181.81, but a first-round 7.76 lost to Stan Mizell's 7.72. Next stop was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Warren became the first 190 mph NHRA Pro Stock when he ran 7.50/190.07 to qualify #4. The speed was backed up for a new NHRA record. As good as his speed was, his ET was off as Glidden ran 7.37/189 to qualify first. Warren's 7.48/189.27 in the first round, beat Sam Gianino, but an off-pace 7.85/184.76 lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.64/180 in round two. It was then back to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. His 7.45/186.79 qualified #2 behind the T-Bird from Indiana that ran 7.41/187. But in the first round, Don Campanello's holeshot 7.58/180 beat WJ's 7.57/186.14. NHRA's next stop was at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. Warren's 7.51/185.79 took his customary #2 spot behind Glidden's 7.45/185. In the opening round, Mizell fouled against him and Johnson advanced with a 7.62/184.61. In the second round, Don Beverley fouled and Johnson's 7.55/184.53 moved on. He drilled Lepone in the semifinals where his 7.66/183.26 beat Joe's quicker 7.58/181. This put him into the final against Glidden. Bob had the performance advantage and Warren took a chance on the tree and fouled away a 7.56/183 while Glidden picked up his 50th NHRA trophy. Warren watched as his points lead over Glidden dwindled.

Notes: Warren Johnson started the '87 season by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #2 with a 7.43/188.20 (Top Speed and a new track record), behind Bob Glidden's 7.42/186. In the first round, he ran another 7.43 at 187.50 to beat Kenny Delco. In round two, he stopped Gordie Rivera's 7.50/183 with a 7.46/186.60. He then set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.403 (track record) at 186.91 to beat Larry Morgan. He faced Butch Leal in the final, and Leal hadn't been out of the 7.5s all day. But Leal was always sharp on the lights, so it would still be a good race. But Butch didn't get his usual starting line advantage, and Warren's 7.43/187.22 got the win over Leal's 7.52/184. After such a great start to the season, it was surprising that Warren failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was plagued by tire shake and then dropped a valve. His best of 7.56/187.03 was good for the third alternate. He made up for it by winning April's NHRA Winston Invitational race at the Texas Motorplex. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.33/187.30 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 7.31/189. Johnson then ran 7.37/187.42 over Don Coonce's 7.47/185 and 7.32/187.98 to beat Jerry Eckman's 7.42/184. He faced Joe Lepone in the final, and Warren's 7.38/187.57 earned the title over Lepone's 7.51/183. He then went into a long dry spell. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, he qualified #5 with a 7.49/186.10, and an opening-round 7.44/185.83 beat Steve Schmidt's 7.47/185. But in round two, his 7.55/184.95 lost to Glidden's 7.43/187. He debuted a new Don Ness-built car at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He ran 7.56/185.33 to qualify #5. A first-round 7.54/185.18 beat alternate Geoffrey Bailey, but Glidden again beat him in round two. Warren's tire-shaking 7.79/180.39 lost to Bob's 7.52/185. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals at Columbus. There, Warren's 7.53/182.74 qualified #3, but in the first round, both he and Bruce Allen ran 7.66 (WJ at 182.62), but Allen got to the stripe first. Although it wasn't an NHRA National event, Johnson got a badly needed win at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove in June. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with a 7.48/184.80. He made it look easy by beating Joe Sway's 7.67/175 in the opening round with a 7.55/182.92. A semifinal 7.53/183.61 took out Ken Koretsky's 7.63/183. In the final, he dropped Lepone's 7.72/178 with a 7.56/183.67. It was a much-needed boost, but it didn't last for long. At the NHRA Grandnationals, he "only" qualified #10 with a 7.62/185.83. He improved to 7.59/182.03 in the first round, when Eckman fouled away a 7.53 against him. In round two, his 7.62/184.50 lost to Leal's 7.53/184. Englishtown was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Summernationals. Warren qualified #2 with a 7.49/185.60. He beat Coonce's 7.65/180 in the first round, with a 7.59/184.23, but lost to Larry Morgan in round two. NHRA's eighth race of the season was its Mile High Nationals, held at the end of July in Denver. WJ ran 7.98/174.41 to qualify #6. He got some "revenge" on Morgan in round one, where his 8.02/173.31 stopped Larry's 8.07/170, but WJ fouled away an 8.07 in round two against Allen, who also ran 8.07 to advance.

Notes: Also Ran IHRA, which ran at 500 inches in 1988. Won 1988 IHRA Spring Nationals with a 7.500 at 184.35 and the IHRA Fall Nationals with a 7.426 at 186.18. Did Warren run 190.67 at the Winston All-Stars race in April? We need to confirm whether this was a different car than the Cutlass Ciera WJ started the year with.

Notes: Ran Cutlass Ciera to begin the year. We need to validate that this was NOT the Cutlass where he ran his season's best times at Houston Fall (7.282/189.91). The best times with the Ciera (assuming it was not the same car) were 7.355/189.47 at Gainesville. | Johnson qualified number two 7.351 188.24 IHRA Ennis 4/88

Notes: Won 89 IHRA Spring Nationals with a 7.502 at 184.35. Warren had a so-so year in '89. His performance was great, but he was only able to pick up two NHRA national event wins. He finished the season fourth in the NHRA Pro Stock championship points race. Don't get me wrong, other drivers would love to have a season like that, but WJ was so good that this was just not up to his normal consistently of big wins and Low ET's. He started the year by qualifying #7 at the Winternationals with a 7.37/187.53. He ran another 7.37/186.76 in the first round, to beat Gordie Rivera's 7.42/185. In round two, he picked up to a 7.35/187.53 to beat Jerry Eckman's 7.40/186. In the semifinal, a good 7.37/187.89 was no match for Bob Glidden's 7.33/188. From there it was on to Houston for the Supernationals. There WJ used a 7.33 to qualify #5. He lasted until the second round before losing to Larry Morgan. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #5 this time with a 7.35/187.53, and once again he lasted until the second round where this time, Glidden put him out with a 7.34/188 to his 7.42. The fourth run of the season was in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 7.35/188.08 qualified #2 and as in the last two events, he made it into round two before losing. At this race, Rickie Smith stopped him with a 7.47/184 to Warren's close, 7.48/186.10. Memphis was the next stop for the Mid-South Nationals. WJ ran a strong 7.32/189.03 to qualify #2. He advanced past the first-round when Morris Johnson Jr fouled against him. In round two, it was Butch Leal's who fouled against him. In the semifinals, he out drove Morgan's 7.35 with a holeshot 7.39. In the final he met Glidden and a 7.37 was only good for runner-up to the Ford's 7.28. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals and scored a win over Darrell Alderman in the final with his 7.50/184 beating the Dodge's 7.56/181. It was then back to the NHRA trail for the Cajun Nationals. He qualified back in the #5 spot with a 7.44/185.22 and in the first round, he lost to Smith. NHRA's seventh race of the season was the Springnationals at National Trail. WJ qualified #3 with a 7.37/185.41. He beat Jerry Eckman in the first round, before losing to Mark Pawuk in round two. It was then off to Canada for the Grandnationals where a 7.38/185.98 qualified #3. He and Alderman both ran 7.43 in the first round, but Alderman got to the line first. He lost in the first round, at the next event as well, the Summernationals where he qualified #7 with a 7.40/187.34. He was upset by Don Coonce. The next day he went to Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open. He qualified #1 with a 7.49/183.56. In the first round, he set Low ET with a 7.47 at 183.54 in beating Jim Revis' 7.73/178. He stayed consistent with a second round 7.48/182.92 that beat Eckman's 7.55/183. In the semifinal, a 7.49/182.85 advanced when Pat Musi fouled. WJ looked like a shoe-in for his first victory of the season, but it was not to be. He slowed down to a 7.72/179.29 in the final that lost to Terry Adams' 7.59/181. It was obvious he was not running as good as he should when he showed up at the Mile High Nationals and only qualified #9 with a 7.89/174.99. Warren was as good as anybody in the thin air and it was surprising to see the Cutlass that far down the ladder. He met low qualifier Glidden in the first round, and lost. At the California Nationals, he qualified #12 with a 7.38/188.08. He seemed a bit down on power when in the first round, he beat Joe Lepone Jr. with the slowest winning ET of the round, a 7.56/185.64. He had the slowest winning ET of round two as well with a 7.53/185.03 over a troubled Morgan at 7.66. In the semifinals, he cut a great light and beat Eckman's 7.46/184 with a 7.48/185.45. In the final, he ran Glidden and a 7.49/185.49 was only good for the runner-up spot behind Bob's 7.33/188. He got his first NHRA event win of the season at the next race, the Seafair Nationals. He qualified #10 with a 7.38/186.83. He was hard on the tree in the first round, and beat Lepone's 7.39/186 with a 7.42/186.10. In round two, a 7.42/186.14 beat Rivera's 7.43/185. He advanced past a fouling Leal with a 7.43/185.87 in the semifinal. This set up a final round meeting with Bruce Allen. Warren showed he could drive by running a 7.41/185.26 for the win over Allen's quicker 7.39/186. WJ debuted a new Cutlass at the Northstar Nationals and the new car blues held the car back to a best of 7.50/183.22 in qualifying. That just got him into the field (#16). He lost to Don Beverley in the first round. The new car ran much stronger at the US Nationals qualifying #6 with a 7.38/186.21. He advanced past a fouling Ken Koretsky in the first round, with a 7.39/186.02, but in round two his transmission broke and he slowed to a 7.90/148.80 loss to Morgan's 7.36/186. He got his first pole of the year at the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. A 7.33/187.57 got the position. Unfortunately, he fouled away an even quicker 7.32/187.61 in the first round, and lost to Beverley. His second NHRA win of the season came at the Chief Nationals. Once again he got the pole with Low ET at 7.27/188.28. In round one a 7.32/188.28 beat Coonce's 7.36/185. In round two, a 7.31/188.75 (Top Speed) beat Lepone's 7.37/185. In the semifinals, WJ out drove Glidden with a 7.37/187.73 beating Bob's 7.36/187. In the final, he met Morgan and once again he used his driving ability to cut a good light and run a 7.31/188.28 for the win over Larry's quicker 7.29/188. He almost got his third pole in a row at the Fallnationals, but his 7.40/188.25 took the #2 qualifying spot. He beat Beverley in the first round, and a 7.45/185 beat a quicker 7.44 by Allen in round two. But in the semifinal, a 7.42/185 lost to Glidden's 7.41/185. At the season-ending World Finals at Pomona, he qualified #3 with a 7.35/188.00. He beat Allen in round one, and Iaconio's 7.41/186 lost to Warren's 7.38/187.30 in round two. He left on Morgan in the semifinal and won with a 7.32/187.57 to Morgan's quicker 7.29/187. In the final, he met Glidden and pushed the tree too hard and fouled away a potentially winning 7.30/188.24 to Bob's 7.32/188. It was WJ's third runner-up of the year. 7.386 186.21 NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/89 (6th Qualifier/Second Round). - Danny White

Notes: Set speed record at Ennis. Rick Howard photo from 1990 NHRA Springnats, Columbus, Ohio. | After finishing fourth in the NHRA points standings in '89, Warren was determined to do better in '90. Things didn't go as well as he hoped as he only scored one NHRA victory in the year. He started his championship quest by qualifying #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.34/188.75. He improved to a 7.31/188.24 to beat Gordie Rivera's 7.37/187 in the first round, while in round two, his 7.34/188.36 took out Rickie Smith's 7.42/186. A 7.36/188.04 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.34/186 in the semifinals. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 7.28/188.99 qualified #2. He fouled in the first round, against Scott Geoffrion. Johnson got his lone win of the year at the NHRA Supernationals at Houston on March 4. He qualified #2 with a 7.23/189.67 and beat Steve Schmidt and Rivera in the first two rounds with 7.32/188.36 and 7.27/189.03 times. In the semifinals, a 7.24/189.23 ended Kenny Delco's day and Warren moved into the final against Bruce Allen in the "Reher-Morrison" Beretta. Allen had problems and shut off to an 8.50/117.21 while WJ got the victory with a 7.25/189.11. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #2 for the third straight NHRA event with a 7.30/188.63. He beat Per-Kristian Skinne in the first round, but in round two he lost to Delco. He slipped to #3 in qualifying for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta with a 7.26 at a track record speed of 190.31. Warren worked his way to the final by beating Morris Johnson Jr, Delco, and Jerry Eckman in the semifinals with a 7.32/188. In the final he faced Larry Morgan and WJ fouled giving Morgan an easy win. The NHRA tour then went to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. There, WJ lasted until round two where both he and Bob Glidden ran 7.33, but Glidden got the win. Next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Warren set a 7.28 track record in qualifying #1. His speed was tops for the meet at 189.71. In round one, he beat Buddy Ingersoll's Buick while a 7.39/188 in the second round beat Eckman's 7.43. He was a little slow off the line in the semifinals and his 7.41/188.95 lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.42/185. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 7.36 qualified him #2 in the show. He made it into the semifinals by beating Joe Folgore and Pawuk, but in the semis, he fouled against eventual winner Eckman. On June 23 he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Warren ran 7.33/187.05 to qualify #2. He beat Frank Sanchez in round one, but in the second round, "Tricky" Rickie Smith pulled a holeshot, and his 7.39/184 managed to beat WJ's 7.37/185. The tenth NHRA race of the season was the Summernationals at Englishtown, N.J. Warren didn't do so well, lasting until the second round before losing to Delco. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, WJ almost walked away with everything. He qualified #1 with a 7.76/177.65 (Top Speed and a track record). He beat Gary Herman, Pawuk, and Smith to reach the finals against Morgan. Both had been running 7.7s with WJ having the edge. In the final, Larry got a great leave and his 7.77/175 held off Warren's track record 7.74 at 176.92. Warren set another tack record of 7.28 at 190.35 in qualifying #1 at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. He beat Ingersoll in the first round, but in round two went into heavy tire shake and slowed to a 7.50 that lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.30. Early in August he was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with 7.30/188.75 times. He continued to look good in round one, with a 7.31/188.63 to beat Don Beverly, but he lasted until the semifinals where his Cutlass broke giving Pawuk a free trip into the finals. WJ must have been getting a little frustrated by the time the teams rolled into Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He was setting track records and running really good, but his finishes were not reflecting how good he was running. At Brainerd, a 7.36 qualified #3. He beat Luis Dayer in round one, and Glidden in the second round, but in the semifinals, he got left on by Allen and the little Beretta's 7.34 held on WJ's quicker 7.31.

Notes: Warren started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 7.21/192.76 (Top Speed) qualified #4. He repeated that number in the first round at 192.55 to defeat Gary Brown's 7.32/188. In round two, his 7.25/191.89 beat Scott Geoffrion's 7.29/191. But he slowed to 7.32/189.95 in the semi-final, and that wasn't good enough as he lost to eventual winner Jerry Eckman's 7.25/190. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #4 again with a 7.25/191.24. In the opening round, he set Top Speed with a 7.20/192.10 that took out Mark Pawuk's 7.24/190 effort. He slowed to 7.29/190.39 in the second round, but it was enough to get around Bruce Allen. In the semi-final, he got out of shape and lost to Eckman again, who ran 7.24/190 to win the race and take a huge points lead. The third NHRA event of the season was the Supernationals held at Houston in the first week of March. WJ slipped to #6 in the qualifying order with a 7.18/193.38 (Top Speed). Larry Morgan pulled off a big upset in the first round where his quick-leaving 7.25/190 beat WJ's 7.19/191.69. His first win of the season came at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals. A 7.15/194.46 (Top Speed) qualified #3, and a 7.14/193.84 in the first round beat Rickie Smith's 7.22/191. Another 7.14 at 194.04 in the second round beat Vince Khoury's 7.29/189. He got "revenge" over Morgan in the semi-final, where his third 7.14 at 193.75 beat Larry's 7.21/191. He finished it with yet another 7.14/193 in the final to beat Eckman's 7.16/192. WJ won his first NHRA Championship this year. He also ran 7.109 at Ennis Fall.

Notes: Warren started his '93 season on the right foot as he won the NHRA Winternationals. Not only did he win, but he also qualified #1 with a 7.16/194.04 (Top Speed). He also watched his son Kurt race in his first NHRA race and make it into the semifinals. Warren set Low ET in the first round with a 7.14 at 193.46 to beat Vince Khoury's 7.29/191. A 7.15/193.88 beat Bruce Allen's 7.24/191 in round two, and in the semifinals, his 7.18/192.84 beat Ray Frank's 7.26/189. In the final, he faced the Dodge of Scott Geoffrion. On this day, there was no catching WJ as his 7.24/192.02 beat the Dodge's 7.35/187. He qualified #1 at Arizona as well with a 7.21/192.30 for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. He then ran the race's best times in the first round, with a 7.15/193.05 over Franks' 7.32/189. He was late off the line in round two, and his 7.22/192.14 lost to Allen's 7.24/190. Johnson almost broke into the sixes at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. He reset both ends of the NHRA record with a 7.02/195.05 in qualifying #1. He beat Khoury's 7.25/191 in the first round, with a 7.11/194.09, but he fell to a Rickie Smith holeshot in round two that saw his 7.11/194.25 lose to Smith's 7.17/191. Warren found his way back into the winner's circle at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he qualified #1, this time at 7.06 (Low ET) at a national record 196.24 got him the spot. He beat a fouling Paul Rebeschi in the first round, with a 7.12/193.84, and in round two, his 7.14/192.47 took out Khoury's 7.22/191. In the semifinals, Mark Pawuk fouled against him, and Johnson advanced with a 7.13/193.59. He faced Larry Morgan in the final, and Larry got out of shape and slowed to 8.13/130 while Warren won his 46 NHRA National Event with a 7.14/193.17. He didn't have long to wait before he won again. The win came at the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. Johnson set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 7.09/195.05. He set a new track speed record in the first round, where his 7.10/196.20 beat Rebeschi. A second-round 7.12/195.65 beat Jerry Eckman and a 7.11/195.35 beat his son, Kurt's 7.15/193 in the semifinals. In the final, he met his nemesis, Bob Glidden, and WJ got the victory with a 7.12/195.39 over Glidden's 7.24/192. Rick Howard photo from 1993 NHRA Oldsmobile SpringNats, Columbus. Qualified No. 1 at 7.16/193.54 - Low ET and Top Speed - and ran the table by beating Todd Tutterow, Ray Franks, Lewis Worden and won the event when his son Kurt fouled in the final (photo).

Notes: What can you say about Warren Johnson? You either love him or hate him, but you have to respect him. His '99 season was nothing short of amazing. He won his fifth NHRA Pro Stock title. In NHRA's 22 race schedule, he was the only driver that qualified for every race. He also had the most wins, as his seven victories brought his career total to 79. He had qualified #1 at 15 of those 22 races and had set Top Speed at every one. He also set Low ET at 13 of those events. Since racing in NHRA Pro Stock, he qualified first 117 times and set Top Speed 173 times. Both were records. Notes: Confirmed 6.737 at Houston. Did Warren run 6.681 in testing somewhere this year? The best speed was 205.32 DNQ at Joliet. WJ started strong but slipped from the 6.70s to the 6.80s in the latter half of the season and failed to qualify at several events.
