Notes: Kalitta recorded the fastest speed at the 1962 Nationals on Saturday and Sunday, but relinquished driving duties to Don Garlits on Monday. Garlits set a new national NHRA Top Speed record of 180.36 mph. In the '63 Winternationals took runner-up honors to John Peters in Top Gas Eliminator. He briefly ran the car on fuel after the Winternationals before returning to the gas ranks. Photo: '63 WInternationals - MB |

Notes: Runner-Up at Pomona. Photo from 1963. | Connie Kalitta started the season running on gas. His runner-up finish at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals came when a water line broke in the final, and spewed water onto his slicks causing him to lose traction. Less than a month after that, finish he switched to fuel. The first time running fuel came at San Gabriel. The best run he made was 8.64. The day before, he had run 8.34 on gas so his debut wasn't the greatest. Two weeks later, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Unfortunately, he lost to Art Malone in the first round. Connie set a 189.48 mph Detroit track record on July 6. |

Notes: 144" Logghe chassis. First to run the new SOHC Ford in a dragster. Won Bakersfield. Confirmed 7.67 #6 qualifier at AHRA Beeline 1965. Kalitta made it to the second round at the AHRA Winternationals. Set National Record on 5/22/65 at Cecil County, MD (206.42). Best ET at Cecil County was a 7.60. Kalitta ran 207.84, 208.80, and 209.78 in June at Bristol. All speeds were above track record. Ran 7.63 at Indy. He was also the first to run 200 at Beeline earlier in the year with a 7.51/200.88 at the AHRA Winternats where he debuted the Ford-powered car. At Pomona, he qualified #5 with a 7.82/199.54 for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he beat Don Yates in the "Ramchargers" car with a 7.78/198.22. In round two, a 7.83/190 beat low qualifier Art Malone's 8.14/189. In the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.99/182 against eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the "Hawaiian." On February 21 he was at Carlsbad for a best of three match race against Danny Ongais. He lost all three races, running a best of 7.84/198.22 while Ongais won the match with a best of 7.54/206.88. He didn't win at Bakersfield (he had won in '64), but he did run speeds of 203.16, 203.76, and 206.42 (Top Speed of the meet). Kalitta faced off with Don Westerdale driving the "Ramchargers" factory-backed car at Detroit on April 11 for a best of three match. Conrad won the first race with an 8.38/188.66 when Don got out of shape on an 8.72 run. Unfortunately, Kalitta fouled out in both the last two races giving the match to the "Ramchargers." - Ron Howard |

Notes: For the NHRA Winternationals, Kalitta qualified #8 at 7.681 but lost to Tommy Allen in round one, 7.61/208 to 7.62/198.22. He ran 7.62/203.60 at Lions UDRA Winter Championships on 2/11/66 and 7.87 at Irwindale Dragway AHRA Winternationals. Connie qualified with a 7.51/208.32 at Famoso for the March Meet but lost in round two. He faced off against Bobby Langley for a best two out of three match race at Amarillo on March 27. Connie won all three races with a best of 7.67/205.57. He was in Detroit on April 13 for a four-car race. He lost to Chris Karamesines in his first race, and in the second race, his 7.73/208.32 lost to Garlits' 7.65/206. It was not Kalitta's day as in the third race, his 7.76/209.30 lost to Jimmy Nix's 7.85/210. Kalitta ran Bobby Vodnik at Atco on May 1 for a best two out of three match. He set both ends of the track record in the first race with a 7.67/215.30, but he had fouled, and Bobby won the first race. In the second race, Kalitta lost a blower and the match when Bobby's 8.05/197 gave him two wins in a row over the Ford. Kalitta bolted on another blower and soloed with a 7.76/208.80. Another big match race was run at Capitol on May 7 against the "Ramchargers" with Don Westerdale driving. Kalitta won the first race with a 7.35 track speed record of 221.12. In the second race, he fouled away a 7.61/211, letting the "Rams" 7.80/206 have an easy win. Don fouled in the final deciding race, and Kalitta powered through with a 7.49/215.82 match race win. The following day (May 8), Connie was at Madison for a match race against Marvin Schwartz. He beat Marvin two straight, setting track records of 7.92/200.88 to win the match. He was at Cecil County on May 15 for a best of three match against Don Prudhomme in the "B&M Tork Master" car. Prudhomme won the first race with a 7.46/216 over the Ford's 7.80/210.76. In the second race, Kalitta took the win with a 7.48/183.28 over the "Snake," who fouled. However, the slow speed resulted from a blown engine, and Connie could not run the final race. Don soloed to win the match. Richmond hosted the NASCAR Springnationals on May 30, and Kalitta lost a blower during qualifying and suffered slight burns. He was unable to make eliminations. At the NHRA Springnationals in Bristol on June 3, a 7.64 qualified him fifth. He won round one over Dave Babler, 7.549/190.26 to 7.67/208, but he lost to a huge holeshot in round two when his 7.522/200.44 couldn't catch Ray Marsh's 7.87/194. He faced Don Garlits for a best of three match at Detroit on June 11. He had some problems with his magneto in the first race and lost with an 8.67. After tearing the motor down and rebuilding it for the second race, it responded with a 7.99/201, but he still lost to Garlits' 7.65/209. A rematch between the two was run at New York on June 26, but once again, Kalitta had problems, this time, he blew a rear end in the first race, and he was unable to repair, so Garlits soloed to win the second race and the match. Another best-of-three match race was run at Connecticut on July 17 against Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." Connie won the first race with an 8.02/187.88, beating Mike's quicker 7.89/197. In the second race, Mike's 7.82/173 beat Connie's 7.99/189.46. Snively lost a motor in the last race while Kalitta won the match with a track record 7.77 at 194.38.There were no shortages of match races available as everyone wanted to see the big SOHC Ford take on the Chryslers. On July 23, Kalitta faced Tommy Ivo at Alton. In their first race, the Ford's 7.77/188.28 came out on top over the Chrysler's 8.07/197. Only one more run was needed to decide the winner, as Kalitta again led Ivo through the traps with his 7.81/192.30 winning over Tommy's 7.93/194. He won the Division 3 race at Bluegrass Dragway on July 24 with little opposition. Kalitta faced another tough opponent in the way of Don Prudhomme for a best of three match at Detroit on July 30. Conrad won the first race with a suspect 7.16/209.78, but Don's holeshot 7.83/200 in the second race beat his quicker 7.53/210, and in the final race, Don again proved why he was such a great driver with another holeshot win, 7.75/204 to Connie's much quicker 7.49/208. These two ran each other again at Capitol Raceway on August 6.This time Kalitta got "revenge" on the "Snake. In the first race, Kalitta won with a 7.45/207.36.Prudhomme came back to win the second race with his 7.50/205 edging the Ford's 7.69/188.28.But the last race was all Kalitta's, as his 7.44/213.28 won the match over Don's shut off 11.33.The SOHC had burned a piston on the last run while the "Snake" had lost an engine. On August 21 at the NASCAR Nationals at Dragway 42, Connie qualified sixteenth with a 7.89 and ran a 7.59 best before Pete Robinson beat him in the semifinals. Connie set the Pittsburgh track record at 200.08. At the US Nationals, Connie qualified #3 with a 7.398/212.76. He beat Val LaPorte in round one, 7.419/209.30 to 14.84/78 but lost in the second round with a 7.515/215.82 to a holeshot 7.558/211.76 by Don Prudhomme. Shortly after that, he went to Detroit Dragway for a best of three match against Nick Colbert. Kalitta lost the match. Connie was one of eight fuel dragster drivers selected to race at Cecil County on September 24 for the Mr. USA Fuel Championships. Unfortunately, the big Ford failed to fire in the first round against Tommy Ivo. This dragster's career came to a halt on October 9 in Connecticut. Kalitta was there to face Ivo in a best-of-three-match race. In the first race, he beat Ivo with a 7.27 track record at 204.54, beating Prudhomme's former 7.54 record. But the run came at a price as the big Ford blew and gave Connie an oil bath. He couldn't see through his oil-covered goggles, and he drove into a trench. The car flipped three times and was totally destroyed. He was lucky enough to walk away with some bumps and bruises. Kalitta had to borrow a chassis to stuff his Cammer into for the NHRA World Finals on October 30 since he had wrecked his car. He qualified #6 at 7.387/204.08 but lost to Pete Robinson in round one, 7.20/188 to 7.537/181.08. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Connie ran then-quickest 7.17 at Winternationals in 2/67 but did not back it up. Won Triple Crown (all 3 Winter events that year). Qualifying numbers were 7.401/219.50 at Pomona Winters 67. | Connie qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternats with a 7.46. He advanced past the first-round when Dave Powers fouled and then ran Low ET at 7.44 in beating Chris Karamesines in round two. He beat Leroy Goldstein in the third round and John Mulligan in the semifinal. In the final, a 7.63/196.00 beat Bob Downey's 8.05/196. The numbers mentioned above qualified #16 at the NHRA Winternats at Pomona on February 5, and he went on to win. He opened up with a 7.289/214.28 to beat Chuck Griffith, while in the second round, a 7.249/214.78 beat Mike Snively's 7.35/212 in the "Hawaiian." In round three, the car continued to run quicker, hitting a 7.220/214.78 to stop John Mulligan's 7.39/212 from advancing. He faced the only other SOHC-powered car to qualify, Pete Robinson, in the semifinals. Pete got out of shape and shut off while Kalitta moved into the final with a 7.231/215.82. He ran Creitz and Greer's car in the final with Gene Goleman driving. For the final, Connie upped the nitro percentage from the 85% he had been running to 1988%. He took the victory with a Low ET shot of 7.173/218.43. It was interesting to note that the car was running a stock displacement 427 with aluminum heads. Ford had dynoed the engine at 1,640 hp on 85%. It weighed 1,280 lbs. Kalitta then won the NASCAR circuit opener at West Palm Beach. He bypassed the Bakersfield Meet to run at Deland for the NASCAR Winter Championships. He ran 7.29 (Low ET) at 205.46 in the opening round to beat Karamesines, a semifinal 7.44/202.70 defeated Joe Jacono, and a final round 7.44/207.80 beat Chuck Kurzawa in the Probe for the title. On April 2, at Fremont, Tommy Ivo ran Connie in a best-of-three-match race. Kalitta's 7.49/205.94 beat Ivo's 7.54/206 in the first race, but he failed to start for the second run giving Ivo a win even though he blew his blower on the single run. On the tie-breaker, Ivo's 7.74/210.28 beat Kalitta's 7.86/209.30. On April 8 for the HRM Championships, Kalitta (7.37) lost a close first-round race to Mike Sorokin's 7.36. At Oklahoma City on April 23, the two Winternationals finalists met for a match race. Gene Coleman won the first race with a 7.25/210.76 over Connie's 7.39/198.22. The Bounty Hunter took the second race with a 7.27/206.88 over Gene's blower-popping 7.36/184. Connie won the match when Gene was unable to run the final race. On May 14 at Motor City Dragway, Michigan, Karamesines met Kalitta for a match race. Connie won the match in three straight with a first-round 7.92/207, beating a sleepy Chris at 7.49/194. In the second race, the Greek fouled, and on the third run, Connie soloed for the win with a 7.75/200. Another best of three match race was run at Milan where he faced Dick LaHaie. In the first race, Dick soloed for the win when Kalitta's Ford failed to fire. After Dick ran, Connie fired the car and ran a 7.67/208.76. He evened up the score in the second race, winning with a 7.32/209. But in the last race, the big Ford came up ailing running on only seven cylinders. Kalitta attempted to make a race out of it, but when he saw the oil pressure at zero, he shut off to an 8.20 loss. On May 28, Connie set a 7.16 track record at Union Grove during the Olympics of Drag Racing. He made it into the final against another SOHC Ford, Pete Robinson's. In the final, Pete ran a 7.17/219 over Kalitta's off pace 7.61/195.65. On June 11 at Bristol for the NHRA Springnationals. Connie was one of only two drivers that qualified not using Goodyears. He and Tom McEwen were using M&H's. After qualifying #8 at 7.251/222.22, a first-round 7.199/193.96 beat an out-of-shape Al Friedman, but in round two, a holeshot 7.13/215 from Mike Sorokin beat his quicker 7.079/218.96. On June 25 at Tri-City, he won again for the NHRA Division 3 race. Kalitta found himself at Englishtown on July 26 for a best of three match against Snively.Mike fouled in their first race, and Kalitta won with a 7.53/204.54.The "Hawaiian" lost fire for the second race, and Conrad shut it down to 8.45/182.18 to win the match two straight. They both came out for a final run, and this time Kalitta fouled, although he turned the best times, a 7.48/212.26.The speed was a new track record. On August 13 at Pittsburgh for the All-American Fuel Championships, he ran a 7.42/204.08 best but failed to make the finals. At Indy, he qualified #3 with a 6.817/208.32 and made it to the semis. Connie won round one at 6.850/208.80 over Wayne Griffiths at 7.27/207. Earl Binns did not show for their race in round two, and Kalitta coasted to a 9.42/92 win. He beat Chuck Hepler in round three with an 8.87 shutoff when Hepler fouled. Connie fell off to a 13.13 in the semis, losing to James Warren. Another win came at the NASCAR season finale at Atco, where a final 7.03/213 beat Ron Rivero. Kalitta had run a 6.97/208.80 in the first round. At the NHRA World Finals at Tulsa, Connie was the third alternate at 7.500/210.00. Rick Howard photo from Don Garlits Drag Racing Museum. |

Notes: Kalitta's '68 season was nothing like his winning season of '67. He ran well, setting track records, but the big wins eluded him. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, the race he won the previous year, he was hard pressed to qualify. 80 cars attempted to make the 32-car field and Conrad's 7.21/217.90 qualified #27. In the first round, a 7.46/218.96 beat Ray Ayres' 7.46/222. He advanced past round two with an 8.01 when Mike Snively fouled against him in the "Hawaiian." But in round three, his 7.23/219.50 lost to Ron Rolstad's 7.20/222. Early in March, he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. This was a crazy 64-car show. Once again, he lasted until the third round before spinning a bearing and losing to Kenny Safford. Surprisingly, he did not make the trek to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet (he didn't in '67 either). In May, Kalitta was at Pittsburgh for the Eastern Fuel Championship Meet. He set a track record 7.10, but lost to Vic Brown driving the "Creitz & Greer" car in the first round. At Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals, Kalitta was embarrassed when his best of 7.13 failed to make the sixteen-car field. Connie did set both ends of Tri-City, Saginaw, records at 7.06/226.21. On July 27, he had a best of three match race with Snively at York US 30. Kalitta won the first race with a 7.21/212.26 when Mike fouled. In the second race, it was Connie's turn to red light and his 7.34/206.88 lost to the "Hawaiian's" 7.24. Connie won the match with a 6.89 in the third race. Back at Pittsburgh later in '68, he again set the track record, this time with a 7.02. On August 28, Kalitta debuted a new lightweight Logghe built car at Cecil County for the Mr. USA Fuel Meet. He was having trouble getting the dragster to launch straight. In the first round, he faced John Mulligan. Connie gambled on the tree and lost, fouling away a 7.42. John ran 7.14 for the win. After he failed to qualify at the Springnationals, it was nice to make the field easily at the US Nationals. His 6.97/215.30 qualified #19 for the 32-car show. A first-round 7.36/212.76 advanced past Mulligan, but in round two he fouled against Bennie Osborn. - Ron Howard |

Notes: In July, Connie was growing frustrated with the performance of his Boss 429. He installed one of his SOHCs and set a 7.32/196.50 Tri-City track record. He continued to run the SOHC as when he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, pictures from the race clearly show that he was running the "Cammer" at the event. His 7.43/191.89 qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.47 defeated Marv Eldridge, who blew a transmission. He had a really close race with Rich Siroonian in round two that saw his 7.54 lose to the 'Cuda's 7.53. - Ron Howard | A 216.21 at the Super Stock Nats at York was suspect. - Danny White | Kalitta was also part of a Lions East vs. West meet later that year at Lions, that included the Super Shaker Nova and Gene Snow's Rambunctious Charger. I was too small to remember any ETs. - Joe Moore |
