Notes: Number 4 qualifier at Bakersfield 69 at 6.79. | After spending four years sorting the 427 SOHC engine out and making it live in Top Fuel racing, Ford wanted Kalitta to run its new Boss 429 engine. The 429 was probably the most misunderstood engine. It made lots of horsepower in NASCAR, more than the 426 Hemi. It forced Chrysler, who at the time could not afford to tool up for another engine, to develop the Daytona and the Superbird to even out the hp advantage the engine had. But that's a whole other story. With the theory that an engine is just a pump limited to how much fuel and air you could get in and out of it, the 429 should have dominated the drag strips. The intake valves were huge, at 2.28, even the exhaust was impressive at 1.90. But instead, the engine was labeled as a dud. Car magazines at the time blamed the oversized valves, reporting that they were way too big for drag racing applications. But even the 426 Hemi took over three years to develop before it became the engine of choice for Top Fuel racers. Like the 429, it ran great in NASCAR, but the 392 Hemi was still superior at the track. But several factors kept the engine from doing what Ford had meant for it to do, that is, pick up where the "Cammer" left off. But only Kalitta and Tom Hoover and a couple of Funny Car teams ran the engine. Most of the Ford campaigners stuck with the tried and true SOHC. Much like during the 426 Hemi's development, only Don Garlits and the "Ramchargers" were instrumental in sorting out the Hemi. But Ford pulled the plug on its "Total Performance" program early in '70. They dropped NASCAR and almost all their drag racing teams. The engine didn't stand a chance. Conrad had a series of blower explosions and fires that nearly killed him, and the engine never did run as good as the "Cammer" he had replaced with it. His SOHC had been running steady 6.7's easy in '68. Now he was forced to start all over. Connie debuted his Boss 429 powered car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He just made the show with his 7.289/209.30 qualifying on the "bump spot" of the 32-car show. He had some problems when he attempted to fire the car and crashed into a fence during qualifying. The front end was badly wrecked, but Mickey Thompson helped with his shop and got the car "right" for eliminations. In the first round, he beat Carl Olson's 7.37 with a 7.130/189.08, but again he had trouble with a piston melting on the run. Connie was unable to repair in time for the second round. Kalitta wrecked this car at Cecil County on June 21 at the East-West Meet. In the first round, he was up against John Mulligan. John won with a 6.70/222, but Kalitta had his supercharger explode near the top end of the track. Oil was spraying on his goggles, and he was unable to see. He sideswiped the guardrail and beat up the dragster pretty bad. He was OK. |

Notes: After Ford pulled the plug on its racing support early in '70, the Ford racers were forced to "go it alone" for the season. Up until the axing of its racing operations, Ford was still doing well in drag racing. But this was a severe blow as Ford had asked Kalitta to sort out its Boss 429 for fuel racing. The car was not responding well with the 429, and at numerous races, he reverted to the 427 SOHC to stay competitive. Parts for that engine were now scarce, so after Ford bailed, he switched to a 426 Hemi to power his TF dragster and the Mustang FC. In one of its earliest outings with the Hemi, Kalitta was at New York National Speedway in mid-May for its Springnationals. His 8.59 beat Arnold Arnold in the "Super Cuda," which had transmission trouble in the first round. Rain disrupted the race, and in between, they kept trying to run it until finally completing it on Sunday, May 24. Conrad did not reach the final; he had transmission problems himself, and his best pass was 7.92/179.09. Maple Grove held a sixteen-car show on Wednesday, August 12. Kalitta lost to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein in the second round. Conrad was at Tri-City in September for an eight-car show. He soloed in the first round with an 8.12/123.62 when the "Hawaiian" broke on the line. In the semifinals, his 7.43/173.74 beat Roger Lindamood. In the final, he faced Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Pat got the win when Kalitta lost a clutch to the line. We need confirmation of the listed 6.93. (See the other entry for the Boss 429 times). |

Notes: Ran 6.86 at Detroit. | Kalitta quit running the Ford engines in '70 when Ford pulled out of racing. For '71, he unveiled a new slippery Mustang powered by a 426 Hemi. On May 27, he was at Atco for a best of three match race against Tom Sneden in the Bob Banning Challenger. Kalitta won three straight with times of 7.26/204 on a solo when Sneden broke, 7.05/189.47, and 7.06/202.70. Conrad was at Tri-City in June for an eight-car race where all eight-cars were to make three runs. In his first race, a 7.35/191.89 lost to Mike Burkhart's 7.07/207. He won his second race with a 7.12/207.85 over Frank Oglesby's 7.54/201. In his third race, he lost with a 7.26/168.22 to Gordon Mineo's 7.04/193. |

Notes: Conrad failed to qualify at NHRA's first two national events, the Winternationals and the Gatornationals. Early in April, he was booked in for a four-car race at Edgewater. He won all three of his races over Kenny Safford (Mr. Norm), Clare Sanders (Chi-Town Hustler), and Ron Potter. Times were not impressive, as a 7.63 beat Sanders, who lost a transmission. Another four-car show was run at Tri-City late in May. His 7.23/172.74 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 6.90/208 in the first race. In his second race, Butch Maas' 6.80/204 in Al Bergler's car beat Kalitta's 6.95/206.89. He ran his best time in his final race, a 6.86/217.91, but it wasn't enough as Jim Paoli drove the "Ramchargers" car to a win with a 6.74/218. It was strange to see his Mustang competing in Capitol Raceway's Mr. Chevrolet race, but that's what happened. Malcolm Durham's Camaro was supposed to run, but he had problems so Kalitta took his place in the field. Chevy lovers didn't have to worry about him winning as in the first round, his 7.12/192.23 fell to eventual winner Maas' 6.70/204. | Kalitta got indefinitely suspended by NHRA this year following a dispute with a security guard at the US Nationals. |

Notes: Note the similar paint scheme to Muldowney for that year. Kalitta showed up at Edgewater for the Division 3 race in May. Only four cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car show. In the opening round, his 6.37/224.43 fell to eventual winner Bill Pryor's 6.11/227. While he didn't win or even make the finals, he was happy to be back behind the wheel. It didn't take long to win either, as he won the opening UDRA Circuit race held in Milan, Michigan. At Union Grove's Drag Racing Olympics, he didn't run on Saturday but was there on Sunday, where he did quite well. Kalitta had the lowest ET in the qualifying round with a 6.04, and he showed that he was consistent with a 6.05/244.56, beating Marvin Graham's 6.23/221 in the semifinal. Connie faced the "Old Man," Don Garlits in the final, and they had a great race with Don "schooling" Kalitta by getting out first and winning with a 6.10/238 over Kalitta's slightly quicker 6.09/241.28. He was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals on June 11, where he qualified #8 with a 6.02/243.90. In the first round, he ran 6.25/233.16 to beat a tire shaking Graham at 6.39/215. In round two, he ran another 6.25/233.16, but he lost to Frank Bradley's 6.26/225. Conrad won the Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan, on June 24. It was a surprising victory considering that he qualified only eighth in the eight-car show with a 6.42. But he picked it up n the first-round with a 6.23/233.16, beating Dick LaHaie's 6.22/222. Garlits fouled against him in the semifinals, and Kalitta ran an easy 6.79/163.33 for the win. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.06/243.24 in beating Jeg Coughlin in the final. Since he had been running so well, it was surprising that he failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 6.32 best was far from the 6.15 "bump." The following week, he also failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the IHRA Northern Nationals. He did not race at the NHRA Grandnationals but was back at Martin, Michigan, on August 13 for the PHR Championships. His 6.20 qualified #13 and an off-pace 6.43/233.72 in the opening round lost to Pryor's 6.12/222. Of course, with Kalitta and Shirley Muldowney's recent breakup, everyone wanted the two for match race competition. The two got together for a best of three match at Detroit Dragway. Chalk one up for Shirley. Connie won the first race with a 6.09/231.95 over her 6.18/229. He blew a head gasket and could not run the second race, so she soloed for the win. In their final race for the glory, Shirley's 6.08/233 beat his 6.13/225.56. He qualified #10 at Indy in the 32-car field for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.02/242.58. Paul Romine lost to his 6.07 in the first round. In round two, the spectators got what they wanted, where Kalitta was paired up against Muldowney. Once again, she got the upper hand as her 5.97/240 beat his 6.01/234.98. Seattle was his next stop for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.11/231.95 qualified #8. In round one, he improved to 6.07/235.60 to take out Mike Palmer. Connie ran another 6.07 at 237.46 in round two, but it wasn't enough to beat Rob Bruins' 6.03/240. Connie's best NHRA times were the 6.010 in eliminations at Indy and the 243.90 from Columbus. | The Newport 'News last published in the Summer of '78, including a re-licensing report from Detroit Dragway: "Kalitta runs 6.00, 199." - Joe Moore |

Notes: AKA Bounty Hunter. Connie qualified #9 at Pomona at 6.040/241.28. He lost to Gary Beck in round one, 5.90/242 to 6.302/191.08. Connie qualified #13 at the Gatorantionals with a 6.123/240.64. Kelly Brown beat him in the first round with a 6.04/243 to Connie's off-pace 6.58/237.46. He got into the top half of the field in Columbus with a #8 qualifying 6.020/239.25. This led to a first-round victory over Pat Dakin, 6.120/228.42 to 10.99/71. Don Garlits got the win in a great 6.01/241 to 6.085/239.36 match in round two. Connie qualified on the bump in Denver at 6.180/225.56. He beat Bob Noice in round one, 6.30/233.16 to 6.52/190, but dropped a 6.06/227 to 6.15/213.95 decision to Rob Bruins in round two. Connie ran a strong 5.897/242.58 to qualify #6 at Englishtown. But Johnny Abbott surprised him in round one, 6.16/243 to 6.21/238.72. Connie's best event this year was NHRA Sanair. He qualified #4 at 5.921/237.45. Bill Pryor broke against him in round one, and Connie took a 5.99 (no speed) win. He then stepped up to a 5.83 Low ET of the Meet in round two to take out Dwight Salisbury's close 5.87. In the final, Connie lost a 5.86 to 6.06 decision to Richard Tharp to claim runner-up honors. Connie qualified #14 at Indy at 5.919/238.72, but Jeb Allen got the first-round win, 5.92/237 to a 6.067/212.76. Connie's next and final event was the World Finals at Ontario, where he was a second alternate DNQ (no times reported, but the first alternate was Rance McDaniel at 6.219). | 6.21NHRA Englishtown NJ 7/79 |

Notes: Conrad's new dragster ran its first laps at the OCIR Super Bowl race. He ran 5.85/227. Kalitta qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals and lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to Jeb Allen. He also qualified #1 at Pomona with a 5.852/244.56 for the NHRA Winternationals. He eased it through the first-round with a 6.28/172.08 when Rob Bruins fouled. A 6.01/238.72 beat Gary Beck's 6.02 at the same speed in round two. In the semifinals, a 5.98/238.09 beat Richard Tharp's 6.11/243 in the Candies and Hughes car. In the final, he faced former girlfriend Shirley Muldowney. Shirley had been running quicker all though eliminations and that's the way the final ended. Her 5.94/247 grabbed the win while Conrad's 6.03/233.76 got the runner-up spot. He won the Bakersfield March Meet on March 9. He set Low ET at 5.81, and in the semifinals got a measure of satisfaction when he beat Shirley's 5.83/226.70 with a 5.98/243. In the final, he faced Graham Light. Graham smoked the tires to a 9.86/82 while Kalitta chalked up the win with a 6.10/224.43. The following week (March 16), he qualified #10 at the NHRA Gatornationals. He lost to Allen in the first round. He made another final round appearance at the next race, the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.03 and then worked his way into the finals where he met Tharp. Connie smoked the tires in that final round racs and shut off to a 7.25/132.45, losing to Richard's 6.05/243. He qualified #2 behind Tharp with a 6.18 at the NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley. He made it into the finals by making a single in the semifinal when David Pace broke in the "Carroll Brothers" car. Kalitta ran a 6.37/230.17 on the solo, but he parachute failed and he crashed into the safety net. The car was too badly damaged to run in the final and Gary Beck singled for the win. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, he ran 5.97 to qualify #4 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he slowed to a 6.14 that lost to eventual winner Bob Hilton's 6.08 in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals in early June. He qualified in the "unlucky" #9 spot with a 6.01/235.72. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tharp. Kalitta was up to the task, running a 5.97 to beat Richard's 6.03. He got to run Muldowney in round two and he was a bit slow of the line and his 6.00 lost to Shirley's 6.02. He qualified #7 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 5.97. He had an interesting run in round two; he went into tire shake against Shirley and it looked like she would get the win, but then the Pink car slowed at 3/4 track, breaking something in the drivetrain and Conrad motored past for the win with a 6.31. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Dick LaHaie. The following week (July 20), he was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.87 qualified #2 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, a 6.12 in the first round lost to Mark Oswald's 5.93. Connie didn't run a lot of AHRA races, but he was at Dragway 42 on July 27 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He didn't hang around for long; he qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 6.07 and then left, not bothering to stay for eliminations. Back at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals in early August, a 6.08 qualified #5 in the eight-car program. He broke in the first round, and slowed to a 10.17 that lost to Tharp's Low ET run of 5.86. At the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove, Kalitta made it into the final before he smoked the tires to a 6.20/190.27 runner-up finish to Hilton's 5.88/236. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.89/237.46. He beat Oswald's 6.15/234 in the first round, with a 6.02/205.94. Hiss 6.07/231.36 beat Tharp, who smoked the tire in round twos. In round three (32-car field), his car broke on the line and advanced Junior Kaiser into the semifinals. Bakersfield and Pomona were his best times at 5.81/244.56. |

Notes: Kalitta's best of 6.06/233.76 failed to qualify at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals (3rd alternate). He went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.05/235.60 qualified #11 in the field. He faced his former girlfriend Shirley Muldowney in the first round, and his tire-smoking 7.15/220.04 lost to her 5.96. A week later (March 15), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 5.832/245.90 to qualify #8. A first-round 5.848/241.28 beat Kerry Sweigert, but in the second round, Kalitta again faced off against Muldowney. And once again, the results were the same, with Shirley's 5.74/250 beating Conrad's 6.135/215.82. Kalitta was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but his best of 5.945 was good for the sixth alternate in the eight-car show. On May 3, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Kalitta qualified #7 in the eight-car show and lost to Jeb Allen's 5.85 in the first round, with a 6.20. Connie qualified #13 at Columbus with a 5.981/233.96. He lost to Terry Capp in the first round, 5.98/219 to 6.096/238.09. He qualified #7 at the Mile High Nats with a 6.06/237.46 but lost a close one to Johnny Abbott on a holeshot in round one, 6.012/235 to 6.003/236.84 (.023 seconds - about 7 feet). He qualified #4 at Englishtown with a nice 5.821/239.99. But nemesis Terry Capp upset him in round one, 6.03/233 to 6.165/229.59. Connie upped his game at the Grannadional Molson, grabbing the #2 qualifying spot at 5.770/245.23. But he got bit again in round one, as Richard Tharp took a 6.04/243 to 6.129/240.00 decision. Connie qualified #12 at Indy with a 5.762/245.23. in round one, his 5.743/246.57 victory over Jerry Ruth's 5.772/239.99 was the quickest side by side pass in drag racing history. Shirley could not show for their second-round race, and he coasted to a 7.13. But Connie lost fire against David Pace in the semis, ending his day. Connie ran 5.837/231.95 at the Golden Gate Nats to qualify #10. He upset Gary Beck in round one, 5.82/235.60 to 6.09/213, and he improved to 5.76/240.00 to take out Frank Bradley's 5.98/227 in round two. Marvin Graham beat him in the semis, however, as Connie shut off to an 8.70. At the OCIR World Finals, Connie went 5.815/235.60 to qualify #12. Jerry Ruth returned the favor from Indy by taking him out in round one, 5.72/242 to 5.834/236.22. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1981. |

Notes: At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Kalitta ran 5.831/240.00 to qualify #13. In the first round, he improved to 5.719/243.24 to beat Jim Barnard's 5.78/246. In round two, Connie fell off to 6.099/237.46 and lost to Jeb Allen's 6.07/238. He faced off against Lucille Lee in a best of three match race at OCIR. He won two straight with a best of 5.86/229. His next stop was Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.815/243.24 qualified #8. He beat Jim Head in round one, 5.836/239.36 to 6.01/238, and a 6.158/234.98 in round two topped Allen's slightly quicker 6.132/224, but he lost to eventual winner Shirley Muldowney in the semifinals when he shut off. The following week, he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He lost to Barnard in the semifinals with an ailing 16.01. Next, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 5.83/207 in the first round, beat Mark Prudhomme, but in round two, Shirley's 5.78/243 beat his early shutoff 6.38/154.37. Kalitta was impressive at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. The Nitro classes were only eight-car fields, and many "name" drivers failed to qualify. Connie's 5.767/236.84 qualified #3, and a first-round 5.837/234.37 beat Muldowney's 5.93/245. In the semifinals, his smoking 6.431/208.81 lost to Steve Hodkinson's 6.12/211. He made it to the final at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 5.90 in the final lost to Gary Beck's 5.86. Connie qualified #13 at NHRA Columbus at 5.900/240.00. In round one, he lost to Muldowney again, 5.84/238 to 5.955/227.27. At Sanair, Kalitta qualified #4 at 5.880/223.88. He beat Jeb Allen in round one, 5.791/240.00 to 5.89/240, and best Joe Amato in round two, 5.771/240.64 to 6.15/198. In the final, he got the win over Muldowney, 5.758/241.28 to 5.85/220. Connie qualified #7 at Englishtown at 5.736/243.90. In round one, he got the holeshot on Dick LaHaie, but Dick came back to claim a 'dead heat' decision on a 5.93/236 to 5.946/236.84 (the margin of victory was .000 seconds)! Connie qualified #6 at Brainerd at 5.756/241.28 but fouled against Shirley in round one, and lost a 5.88/236 to 5.903/203.61 duel. At Indy, Connie qualified #11 at 5.762/238.72, but he dropped a hammer in round one, with an out-of-nowhere 5.560/241.93 that took out Frank Bradley's otherwise solid 5.767/239.99. In round two, Connie kept it going with a 5.634/240.64 decision over a broken Dick LaHaie. He put a tenth on Gary Beck on the starting line in the semis and then extended that into a 5.687/244.56 to 5.76/240 decision. His final-round opponent, former girlfriend Shirley Muldowney, ran 5.60s herself all day. She got a slight jump on Connie and duplicated her qualifying time to take a 5.570/251.39 to 5.669/241.28 decision. rnThat final round served as the quickest side-by-side pass in history to that point and is considered one of the iconic drag races of all time. Kalitta qualified #2 at the Golden Gate Nats with a 5.653/230.76. In round one, he beat Jim Barnard, 5.640/238.72 to 5.95/235, but took out Dwight Salisbury in round two, 5.754/240.64 to 5.99/189. In the final, Connie took the measure of Gary Beck's shutoff run for a 5.593/241.28 victory. He qualified #7 at the World Finals at 5.757/236.84. Connie beat Dave Braskett in round one, 5.710/236.84 to 6.15/201, but he had troubles and shut down to a 7.37/133 against's Jody Smart in round two. Connie had a unique tune-up this year. He ran great ETs but did not mile per hour much at all. |

Notes: Kalitta did not have a good weekend at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On his first qualifying pass, he ran 7.29. Then he returned and ran 6.29 and followed that up with a 6.19. This must have been frustrating as his son, Scott, was running 5.88 and 5.87, and both had Ron Barrow turning the wrenches. Finally, on a last-ditch effort, Connie ran a 5.88/241.28 for the #14 spot. In the first round, he lost to Gene Snow when his motor came up ailing and could only muster a 6.36/181 to Snow's 5.88/241. At the Gatornationals, a 5.65 qualified #4, and in the first round, he raced his son Scott. Conrad won with a 5.85 over a tire-shaking 6.29 by his son. In round two, a 5.72/248.61 beat Jody Smart's 5.81/247. Kalitta had a smile on his face when his 5.66/250.69 beat Shirley Muldowney in the semifinal, but he had problems in the final and slowed to a 7.19/128.20 runner-up finish to Gary Beck's 5.49/251. He finished one spot better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals when he ran a 6.18/243.90 in the final to beat Jim Barnard's 6.29/241. In the semifinal, he defeated low qualifier Richard Tharp with a 5.81. Earlier, Kalitta had set Top Speed at 245.90. On April 17, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car show, but Kalitta managed to qualify #7 at 5.74/241.93. He beat a tire-smoking Joe Amato in the first round with a 5.73/245.90 before losing to Beck's 5.56/246 in the semifinals with a 5.73/241.93. The following week (April 24), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #4 with a 5.70 and beat Jack Ostrander in the first round before losing to Smart in the semifinals. Things didn't go too well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he was the first alternate for the eight-car show with a 5.82/237.46. Shortly after that (June 5), he was in Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. It was another eight-car field, and he qualified #5. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Beck. Connie tried hard in their race, but his 5.75/235.60 was no match for Gary's 5.62/246. A week later, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Kalitta qualified #4 with a 5.73/247.25. A 5.74/247.25 in the first round beat Danny Dannell, but a 5.86/236.84 in round two lost to Doug Kerhulas' 5.82/233. Kalitta was still sitting in sixth place in the NHRA TF points standings. Early in July, he made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field but went home early after his 6.72 in the first round fell to Beck's 5.68. A week later, he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. This was another eight-car show, and his 5.71/241.93 qualified #3. He beat Jim Head in round one before losing to the eventual winner, Tharp, in the semifinal. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he ran 5.88/242.58 to qualify #11. He improved to 5.81/244.56 to defeat Denzer Shultz's 6.15/181 in round one, and in round two, a 5.97/220.58 stopped Head's 6.01/234. The car broke against Smart in the semifinal. Kalitta did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Notes: Kalitta was at Firebird Raceway in Jan during the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event, testing his car. He ran times of 5.61/249.30 and 5.63/237.46. Connie qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/236.09. He beat Shannon Stuart in the first round before his 5.69/202 lost to Joe Amato's 5.49/264 in the second round. At the Gatornationals, he ran 5.68/230.65 to qualify #8. He beat Jack Revelle with a 5.63/212.36, but in the second round, his parachute released early, and he lost to Dick LaHaie. Kalitta attempted to qualify for the eight-car show in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, but his 5.75/250.97 best was good for the first alternate. In May, he was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show, but this time he qualified. In the first round, he ran Don Garlits, and although they both ran 5.77s, "Big Daddy" got the win. The next stop for the NHRA tour was Columbus, Ohio, for the Springnationals at National Trail. Kalitta qualified with a 5.70, putting him in the dreaded #9 spot. That spot put him in the first-round race with low qualifier Amato, a race that Joe won. At the end of June, NHRA went to Canada for the Grandnationals, where Kalitta ran 5.58/255.68 to qualify for #4 in the eight-car show. A first-round 5.54/260.26 beat LaHaie's 5.60/259, and he made it past the semifinals to run against Garlits in the final. There, Conrad ran a good 5.62/256.41, but it wasn't good enough as Garlits took the victory with a 5.48/262. In qualifying for the Summernationals at Englishtown in July, Kalitta ran a career-best (to this point) 5.52 at 254.09 to qualify #4. He beat Chris Karamesines in the first round, and in round two, a 5.57/259 beat Amato. He lost to Darrell Gwynn in the semifinals. Conrad took a big win at the next event, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. He qualified #2 with a 5.63/259.36 and made his way to the finals of the eight-car field. He faced Bill Mullins and beat him with a 5.62 to Mullins' 5.68. Things continued to go well when he also racked up the Northstar Nationals win. At Brainerd, he qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 5.551/258.62. He ran career bests of 5.458/264.70 (track records), beating Garlits' 5.576/259 in the first round. A semifinal 5.531/236.22 advanced when Gary Ormsby fouled. In the final, he met another long-time racer, Gene Snow. Kalitta's 5.523/260.86 took the victory over Snow's 5.63/255. Kalitta hoped to make it three in a row when they rolled into Indianapolis for the US Nationals. A 5.61/261.62 qualified #7 for the show. He had the second Low ET of the first round when his 5.60/259.06 beat Junior Kaiser. Unfortunately, a strong second-round run of 5.65/257.28 lost to Garlits' 5.63/261. The next event on the NHRA schedule was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. It was a tough show to make with the eight cars all qualified at 5.53 or better. Kalitta was in the middle of the pack with a 5.50/256.41 that qualified #5. He lost to low qualifier Gary Beck in the first round. At the Fallnationals, Connie qualified #4 with a 5.54/241.93. |

Notes: Kalitta was at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.73/230.76, and in the first round, a costly 5.68/241.93 beat Gene Snow. It was costly as he had blackened a crank and changed engines for his semifinal race. His 5.77/242.58 lost to eventual winner Bill Mullins' quick-leaving 5.79/255. Conrad started the NHRA season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.50/261.62. He improved to career bests (to this point) of 5.42/267.06 in the first round to beat Don Durbin's 5.73/233. In the second round, Gary Beck smoked the tires against him, and Kalitta moved on with a 5.52/253.52. He took out Joe Amato in the semifinals with a 5.54/265.48 to Joe's 5.59/260. This put him into the final with Darrell Gwynn. Connie slowed to 5.72/209.79, while Gwynn got his first NHRA Top Fuel win with a 5.46/257. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he again qualified #6; this time, a 5.57/263.62 got him the spot. A 5.50/257.58 beat Gary Ormsby's 5.69/215 in the first round, but in round two, his 5.60/255.24 lost to Gary Beck's holeshot aided 5.63/257. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Kalitta was slightly off in qualifying when he ran 5.67/243.11 for the #9 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Amato. Sure enough, Amato's 5.61/253 beat Kalitta's 5.69/256.41. He qualified much better at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where a 5.52/254.30 qualified #2. Unfortunately, he lost to Ormsby's 5.57/251 in the first round, with an off-pace,6.00/182.77. Things all fell into place at the NHRA Springnationals. There, he qualified #5 with a 5.56/248.75. He advanced past a fouling Chris Karamesines in round one with a 5.76/212.86, while in round two, his 5.70/243.90 got around Ormsby, who smoked the tires. Dan Pastorini hazed the tires against him in the semifinals, and Conrad moved into the final with a 5.61/253.02. He was to run Amato for the title, but Joe broke, so Kalitta ran 5.65/217.91 to score the victory. At the end of June, the NHRA tour was in Canada for the Grandnationals. Once again, Connie qualified in the top half of the field with a 5.60/253.80 to give him the #6 spot. An improved 5.51/261.32 in the first round beat Bob Simmons, but his engine gave up in round two, and he slowed to a 6.25 that lost to Dick LaHaie's 5.43/257. Kalitta's best times of the year came in qualifying at Ennis with a great 5.397/272.47. At the world finals, Connie qualified ninth at 5.496/261.24, the exact ET and speed as number eight qualifier Eddie Hill, but he ran it after Eddie, thus getting the worse slot. However, Connie did not allow that to stop him, taking an upset win over Larry Minor in round one. He fell to Dick LaHaie in round two. |

Notes: Connie started the 1988 season very slowly but found the combination at the final few NHRA national events. He started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #7. In the opening round, he lost to Gary Ormsby. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the fourth alternate at 5.54/254.38. He also attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he was the second alternate at 5.46/266.74. The IHRA Texas Nationals was rained out. The day before the race was run, the teams were allowed a test and tune run. Kalitta ran a career-best (to this point) 5.22. He had actually qualified #10 in the field with a 5.29/263.34. However, his 5.32/258 in the opening round fell to Gene Snow's 5.20/274. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, his 5.40/260.94 qualified #11. Once again, he lost in round one, where he shut down to 14.56/49.41, losing to Mike Brotherton's 5.82/249. Shortly after that (May 22), Kalitta was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #5 and couldn't shake the first-round blues as his 5.53/249.44 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.40/269. The following week (May 29, he was in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Kalitta's 5.33/273.80 qualified #8. But as was the case later, an off-pace 5.73/203.16 in the first round lost to Bill Mullins' 5.62/242. | 4/09/1988 - Connie Kalitta wins the inaugural Winston Invitational, 5.19 seconds at 276.0 mph. His 5.09 at the Supernationals was half the quickest side-by-side pass (Amato 5.071). He ran his best times of the season there in qualifying #4 at 5.06/283.01. He also ran 5.080 at the World Finals. Notes: 5.05 at Winters was half of the quickest side-by-side race (LaHaie 5.091). Photo from Columbus 1989. Ran 5.13 on the 291.54. | Connie found some speed going into the '89 season. It came from one of Sid Waterman's new gear-driven fuel pumps. After Connie had made two qualifying passes at Pomona for the Winternationals at 286 and 288, Sid asked him to try one of his larger fuel pumps. Kalitta installed the pump, and with no other changes, he went out and qualified #3 with a 5.06/291.54 (Top Speed and a track record). He beat Dick LaHaie's 5.09/277 in the first round, with a 5.05/288.64. Unfortunately, he lost to Frank Hawley in the second round. He again qualified #3 at the next NHRA event, the Supernationals at Houston, where he ran a 5.02 for the spot. He lasted until the second round, where he smoked the tires and lost to Hawley. He set Top Speed at the Gatornationals when he qualified #4 with a 5.12/286.98. Kalitta broke in the first round, against Shirley Muldowney. He didn't qualify that well at the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, running a 5.25/274.22 for the #12 spot. He lost to Gary Ormsby in the first round. He lost to Dick LaHaie in the first round, at the next race, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #14 with a 5.18/283.82. Conrad qualified in the top half of the field at the Cajun Nationals when he ran a 5.21/279.24 to qualify #7. He beat Jack Ostrander in the first round, but in round two, he first smoked the tires and then tried to get back on it and went into a wheelstand before finally shutting off and losing to Gene Snow. He sidestepped the NHRA schedule for running the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, and while he failed to make the finals, Kalitta set Top Speed of the meet at 271.05. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.10/281.77 but lost to Hank Endres in the first round. Connie traveled up to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he qualified #14 with a 5.37/271.98. A first-round 5.45/270.43 lost to Dennis Forcelle's 5.27/268. He had a bad outing at Englishtown for the Summernationals. His best of 5.33/280.72 failed to qualify, only being good enough for the second alternate. At the tenth race of the season, the Mile High Nationals in Denver, Connie made the show with a 5.44/261.32 (#11). He lost to Ormsby in the first round. He picked it up at the California Nationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.10/284.99. But once again, he lost early when he smoked the tires against Mike Brotherton in the first round. Connie qualified #5 again at the next meet, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. A 5.06/281.25 gave him the spot. But it was a repeat of the last event when he smoked the tires and lost to Brotherton in the first round, again. Kalitta finally made a few rounds at the Northstar Nationals. He used a 5.26/280.11 to qualify #10. He was fortunate in the first round, when Ormsby crashed into the guardrail and his 5.19/281.25 advanced. In the second round, he nipped Lori John's 5.27/264 with a 5.26/278.37. In the semifinals, he met Muldowney, and both ran 5.25 at 277, with Shirley picking up the win. After that good run, it was hoped that it would continue at the US Nationals. It didn't. A 5.12/282.66 qualified #15, and he lost to Eddie Hill in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. Kalitta qualified #11 with a 5.08/277.77. He fouled against Ormsby with a 5.09/263.77 in the first round. |

Notes: Fourteenth member of the Slick 50 300 mph Club on February 20/1994, with a 300.60 at Phoenix. ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Also 4.789 at Houston 94 and 4.807 at Arizona 94. Photo from 1994 US Nationals. | Conrad started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 4.97/271.32 was good for the sixth alternate. He ran much better at Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals where his 4.82/294.69 qualified #5. He beat Bob Vandergriff's 5.05/282 in the first round, with a 4.89/300.60. In round two, a 4.83/298.11 beat Mike Dunn's 4.88/289. Kalitta ran a personal best ET (up to this point) in the semifinals with a 4.80/298.90. Unfortunately, it came in a loss to eventual winner Cory McClenathan's Low ET of the meet 4.74/298 mph blast. |
