Notes: Quickest ET at the time, Beeline AHRA. Chris qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with the 7.42 but lost to Tom Hoover's 7.78/193.96 in the first round, with a 7.80/196.92. He also qualified #1 with a 7.76 (Low ET) at Pomona on March 28 for a sixteen-car UDRA meet. Bill Leavitt's 7.89/192.70 stopped him in the first round, but Chris' losing 7.95/203.16 held for Top Speed. In June, for the NHRA Springnationals, a 7.67/202.70 qualified Chris third, and on Saturday's AA/FD class runoffs, a 7.80/200.88 beat Danny Ongais (7.99/192.70), who fouled. A second-round 7.67/202.70 advanced when the Ramchargers broke, and a 7.93/202.70 got him into the class runoff with Maynard Rupp. There Chris' engine let go, and Rupp won with a 7.99/142.40. Made the finals at NHRA Bristol 65 with a 7.67/202.70 best. Photo from 7/67.

Notes: Also 7.76/198.72 at Bakersfield 3/66. | Chris started the year with a semifinal finish at the AHRA Opener at Beeline. At the NHRA Winternationals, a 7.72 qualified #15 in the 32-car field, but he lost early. The following week on February 26 he was at Lions for the UDRA Winternationals where a 7.61/205.94 qualified #6 in another 32-car field. Once again, he failed to make the finals. He ran well at Bakersfield lasting until the semifinals of Sunday's program before losing to James Warren's 8.02/205 with an 8.05/181.44. Chris didn't run any of the weekly shows at Lions or Irwindale, but concentrated more on the "big events" and the more lucrative match races. On May 1 he was at Island Dragway facing off against Don Westerdale in the "Ramchargers" car. He lost two straight carding a best of 8.0/197. A week later (May 7), he was at Atco for a match with Don Garlits. He lost three straight with a best of 7.89/189. On May 14th he had a rematch with the "Ramchargers." Westerdale won the first race although the "Greek" ran 7.67/204 and in the second race the candy-striped car lost it's 'chute out of the gate and Chris took the win. In the third and deciding race, Karamesines ran 7.70/201.78 to win the match over Westerdale's 7.95/202. Another Match race was run at Minneapolis on May 29 where Tom Hoover was his opponent. Chris won the first race with a 7.81/209.30. In the second race, despite a good 7.80/205, Tom beat him. In the deciding third match, Karamesines had his parachute fall out giving Tom the match race win. At the UDRA Summernationals at Union Grove on May 30, he set Top Speed at 208 and finished runner-up to Don Prudhomme. He beat the "Ramchargers" in a best of three match at New York National on June 11. The "Rams" arrived late and they failed to fire for the first race. Chris soloed for the win with a 7.85/196.92. In round two, the "Ramchargers" blew an engine while beating the "Greek's" 8.62/187.10 with an 8.44/166.87. With the "Ramchargers" out with a blown engine, Karamesines soloed for the win by smoking the tires the length of the track to an 8.05/199.10 for the match race win. The "Snake" fell to the "Greek" three straight at Alton on June 25. Prudhomme fouled in the first race, then broke in the second. Meanwhile, Chris ran 7.61/198.11, 7.51/204.08, and a solo 7.71/189.46 in the third race when Don was unable to repair. The following day he was running at the AHRA Grand American Championships. He soloed with an 8.27/196.72 in the first round, when his competition failed to show, but in round two his 8.24/197.84 lost to Prudhomme's 7.91/203. - Ron Howard

Notes: Chris started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. His 7.86 qualified #19. In the opening round, a 7.77 advanced over Don Johnson, but he lost to eventual winner Connie Kalitta in round two. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 7.310/214.78 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he fouled against John Mulligan in the first round. He slowed to a 7.652/207.84 on the run. That was Chris's last NHRA national event of the year. Karamesines bypassed the Bakersfield March Meet, going to Deland for the NASCAR Winter Championships instead. While he didn't make the final, he set the meet's Top Speed at 208.54. On April 2, he beat Emery Cook three straight at Hollywood. His best time came in the second race, where a 7.41/200.44 beat Cook's 8.18 in Don Garlits car. He wrapped up the match with a 7.53/200.88 in the final race where Cook fouled. The "Greek" found himself at Tampa on April 9 for a match race against Val LaPorte. Things didn't go in his favor there as he first fouled away a 7.56 against Val's 7.80. And then a 7.60 in the second race lost the match to Val's 7.40. On May 7, he was at Gary, Indiana's US 30, for a rematch against Cook. It was just not Chris' day as he got out of shape in their first race and shut down while Cook ran 8.18 to win. Chris shut down again with problems in the second race, and Emory won the match two straight with an 8.01. Another best of three match was held at Motor City Dragway where Karamesines faced Kalitta's Winternationals winning Ford. Chris was very late in their first race, and his 7.49/194.38 lost to Kalitta's 7.92/207. Chris fouled in the second race and ended up losing the match. He was at Cecil on May 21 for a best-of-three-match race against Joe Jacono. In their first race, Jacono broke while Karamesines ran 7.62/199 to win. Joe could not run after the first race, so Ron Rivero took his place. Ron then won the second race with a 7.49/206. Chris did not get an ET, but his speed was 199 again. Chris wrapped up the match in the final race by running 7.54/199 when Rivero fouled away a 7.46/206. On May 30, Karamesines was at Gary, Indiana, for the UDRA Championships. His 7.41/205.46 beat Don Garlits in the opening round of eliminations. In the second round, his 7.47/205 beat Dave Powers, but in the semifinals, his 7.39/205 fell to the eventual winner Vern Anderson's 7.19/214. Garlits was Karamesines opponent on June 25 at Milan, and the "old man" proved to be tough to beat. Something Chris did not do on this day. In their first race, his 7.73/152 fell to Garlits' 7.44/208. Chris improved to 7.48/205 in the second race, but Don also improved to 7.37/207 to win. Even though Garlits had already won the match, the two lined up for one final race where Don ran 7.23 to win while Karamesines ran his best speed of the day at 208.80. He got payback on LaPorte on July 9 at St. Thomas, where he beat him in their match race and set a track record 7.75/195.64. The following week (July 15), he was at Lions for the big 64-car PDA Championships. His 7.38/209 defeated Tom Toler in the opening round of eliminations. Unfortunately, he lost early as Dave Beebe beat him in the next round. He also competed in the Mr.USA Top Fuel Meet at Cecil County on July 29. He caught a really good light in the first round, where his 7.47/197 beat Walt Kinsley's 7.22/210. But he tried to do it again in the second round and fouled against eventual winner Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." AKA the red We needle Nose car.

Notes: Chris was at Beeline in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. It was quite a show with 92 cars attempting to qualify for the 32-car field. His first-round 7.14/203.60 advanced when Kelly Brown lost fire, and he advanced past round two when his opponent fouled. Unfortunately, he lost in round three. He then went over to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was disappointed when he failed to qualify for the 32-car field. He was running really well on March 3 for the 64-car show at OCIR's PDA Championships. Chris ran 6.88 in round four over Tom McEwen before fouling away a 6.90 in the semifinals against eventual winner Vic Brown. It was strange not to see him running at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he did not attend the event in '68. On May 29, he was at Pittsburgh for the Eastern Fuel Dragster Championships. He fouled away a 7.43/203.16 in the first round against Scott Wilson, who advanced with a 7.55/205.46. He also ran 218.44 mph at Long Beach, CA 7/20/68.

Notes: Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from Drag Stat 1969. | Karamesines had some firsts for himself with this car. For one, he had never before run the 426 Hemi engine, and it was his first drag car with a transmission. Kent Fuller built the 1,900 lb. car.

Notes: Chris qualified third with a 7.00 at the AHRA Winternationals. In the third round of eliminations he blew his engine while winning over James Warren. After a mad thrash to change engines for the semifinal, he was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals on February 2, a 7.17/214.79 qualified Chris #22 in the show. He ran a first-round 7.40/209.30 that lost to Dave Beebe's 7.15. On April 26, Tommy Ivo faced Chris for a best two-out-of-three match race at York US 30. Chris won the first race with a 7.18 at a track speed record of 216.88 over Ivo's quicker 7.08/183. Ivo evened the score in the second race when his 6.56/215 beat Chris, who again reset the speed record with a losing 217.38. Chris lost fire in the final race giving Ivo a single for the match race win, but Chris later refired and ran a 6.95/213.28. | Also 6.743 ET at Indy US Nationals 69.

A newspaper report from 1971 notes that Vic Brown's 6.55/228.42 at Union Grove (Wis.) on 5/30/70 broke a track record set the previous Labor Day by Chris Karamesines (6.56/227.31). - RT | Also 6.755/202.70 original listing and 6.56 at New York National. Karamesines was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field. In the opening round of eliminations, he fouled against Dave Chenevert. Chris did not race at the Bakersfield March Meet, choosing to run at Lions for the AHRA Grand American run on the same weekend(March 8). There, his 6.94 beat Frank Rupert in round one, but in the second round, his 6.77 lost to Jimmy King's 6.69. In April, he was at LaPlace's Spring Drag Festival. It was only an eight-car show, and Chris ran 6.92 to qualify #6. A first-round 8.77 advanced when Mike Tarter broke on the line, and in the semifinals, his 6.90/207.84 beat Cliff Smith's ailing car. Not sure what happened in the final (maybe he fouled?), but his 6.85/208.80 finished runner-up to Chip Woodall's 7.54/166. On April 19, the "Greek" was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. Unfortunately, he broke against "Sneaky Pete" Robinson in the first round.

Notes: Chris qualified #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals at 6.832/216.34. He had a wing over the engine (front engine and a separate entry?) He won round one over Paul Schoenfield, 7.53/203.16 to 8.09, but Kenny Safford got to him in round two, 6.91/212.76 to 7.29/214.79. That was the Greek's last NHRA national event in Top Fuel, but he ran his funny car at the Gatornationals. Chris also ran 6.595 at Long Beach and 206.89. | The original rectangular Milodon decal before the bowed shape. I remember the Milodon ads (and T-shirts at the track) in the Lions-era Drag News, with a hand holding a full-stack '92. The first Howard's Cams decal with the cursive writing across the gear was the best one. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ran 6.36 at Marion County, 6.85 at Pomona, 6.47 at Gainesville, and 6.31 at Tulsa. | Chris made history on September 18 by running a 6.44 to qualify #6 at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. What's so special about that? Well he did it running the first Milodon Aluminum 426 Hemi. He switched back to a steel motor for eliminations. He equaled his qualifying effort with a first-round 6.44/218.97 over Jim Hundley, but in round two he lost to Tommy Ivo.

Notes: Chri's 6.117/236.84 just barely lost to Don Garlits' 6.059/243.24 in the first round at NHRA Gainesville on March 18, 1973. The Greek qualified #10 at 6.235/234.37. Chris was the fourth alternate at NHRA Englishtown (times unavailable, but the bump spot was 6.324). At the 1973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway. Top Fuel Eliminator Chris Karamesines, the third qualifier at 6.38/228.43. 1973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway. Top Fuel Eliminator, Round 1. Chris Karamesines (near lane) loses to Texan Don Hand with a supercharger explosion. Chris was the fifth alternate at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73 at 6.32/225.00. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. Chris was at Tulsa in April for the AHRA Grand American. He qualified for the sixteen-car field, but he lost to Don Cook in round one. He also raced at Green Valley for the next AHRA Grand American race. He lasted until the semifinal, where he went into a wheelstand against Dave Settles. A big win followed that at Dragway 42 on May 24. He was there for the AHRA Grand American race. This was an eight-car field, and he qualified #3. In the opening round, he and his opponent, Lou Novotny, had problems, but the "Greek's" 7.17/198.23 crossed the stripe ahead of Lou's 7.15/149. In the semifinal, John Wiebe had problems and slowed to 7.10/204 while Chris ran 6.71/206.42 to win. He faced Jim Walther in the final, and Jim had won his semifinal race with a 6.45. But again, troubles interfered; Jim slowed to 18.03/40 while Karamesines got the victory with a 7.35/141.28. Shortly after that (June 3), he was in Denver at Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals.A 6.64 qualified #4 for the sixteen-car field. He lasted until the second round, where he fouled against Wiebe.

Notes: Karamesines attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He had a blower backfire and explode during qualifying, and he failed to make the show. He was the second alternate at Gainesville with a 6.28 (no speed reported). Chris qualified #24 at Indy at 6.18/223.32 but did not make round one. Hank Endres raced as his alternate. That was Chris's last NHRA national event of the year. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1978 (far lane).

Notes: Chris started the '80 season by qualifying #4 at the AHRA Winternationals. He lost to Shirley Muldowney in the first round. A week later (February 3), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.028/232.55 qualified on the "bump." He lost a motor in the first round and the race. Both he and Bob Noice ran 6.100 (The Greek's at 234.37), but Bob got the win light. He made an amazing pass at the Bakersfield March Meet during qualifying. The car got completely sideways at around 150 mph, but Karamesines somehow saved it. In June, he was in St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. His 6.34/218.98 qualified #5. He lasted until the semifinals before his 6.52/214.80 lost to Jody Smart's 6.39/224. Karamesines qualified #7 in the eight-car field at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Chris won round one over a broken Mark Oswald at PHR championships at 6.06/226.70. In the semifinal, an off-pace 6.48/227 lost to Don Garlits' 6.34/238. Qualified 16th at Indy 1980 at 5.923/236.22 in the last 32-car show there. He fouled against Junior Kaiser in round one and lost despite running quicker, 6.09/229 to the Greek's 5.985/230.76. Pomona and Indy were his only two NHRA national events of the year.

Notes: Karamesines was at Fremont for its East/West meet early in the year. While he didn't reach the final, he set Low ET at 5.85 in a field that included Don Garlits and Jerry Ruth. In May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified second behind Garlits and just ahead of Shirley Muldowney. He lasted until the final, where he finished runner-up to "Big Daddy." In June, he also raced at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, but his 6.79/207.38 in the opening round fell to Fred Snavely's 6.73/192. Chris did not race at any NHRA national events this year.

Notes: Chris started the season at Tucson in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He beat a tire-smoking Johnny Abbott in the first round, but his 6.24/225.56 in the semifinals lost to Shirley Muldowney's 6.03/236. Chris also raced at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.25/227.27 lost to Frank Bradley's 6.15/233. In June, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Muldowney beat him in the first round, with a 5.94/230 to his 6.19/216. The lady had his number as she got him again at the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City. This time it was in the semifinals. Chris' 6.10/231.36 lost to Shirley's 5.95/229. On August 15, AHRA held its Western Nationals at Bonneville Raceway. Karamesines beat low qualifier Bradley with a 6.03/219 to Frank's 6.16/230. In the semifinals, his 6.16/194.31 lost to the pink car of Muldowney that ran 5.89/233. He qualified for the field at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals, but breakage kept him out of the show, and Arley Langlo replaced him. Chris did not run the NHRA tour this year. | 6.13 242 AHRA US 30 1982 losing in the first round. (Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds). - Danny White
