Notes: Karp was in New England in May for its Potpourri Nationals. His 7.38/193.97 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but he hurt some parts and could not run in competition. He failed to qualify at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic but got into the show as an alternate. Unfortunately, he lost to Dale Hall in the opening round. He competed at the 1st annual Night of Thrills race at Englishtown. There were twelve cars there, and all were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars running in the final. Arnie set Top Speed in the first round, where his 7.32/199.11 defeated Bruce Pillar's 7.27/191. But once again, he had engine trouble and could not return for round two. Arnie qualified #30 at Indy with a 6.96 (need detailed times). He upset a broken Chuck Rearick in round one at 7.00/197.80. He ran a consistent 7.02/198.23 in round two but lost to Bill Wallace's 6.81/203. Confirmed 199.11 at Englishtown, but a for sale ad at the end of the year cited 6.96/200. Photo from 1977. |

Notes: Arnie was at York US 30 for its Sportsman Invitational. It was an eight-car show, and Karp's 6.85/212.25 in the opening round defeated Bob Dalton's 7.09/194. He had a close race with Phil Sebring in the semifinal that saw his 6.89/203.62 beat Phil's 6.92/204. He was to face Tom Musselman in the final, but the "Boston Strangler" broke, and Tom made a solo for the victory. |

Notes: Arnie was at Maple Grove on August 2 for the NHRA Eastern Regional. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.91/198.67. He had to run low qualifier Ken Veney in round one, and his 6.78/203.16 advanced when Veney fouled. In the semifinals, Jerry Gwynn broke and Arnie advanced into the final with a 6.96/201.34. He met Carl Ruth there, but Carl also broke and Karp ran 6.79/202.42 for the victory. He was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals the following week (August 9). A 6.82/205.01 qualified #4, and he improved to 6.75/199.11 in the first round, over Bob Elliott. A semifinal 6.79/193.96 beat Veney's 6.99/205 and moved him into the final against Frank Manzo. The two had a good race, but Manzo's 6.78/206 got the victory over Arnie's 6.81/201.34. He won the All-Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown and then won the NHRA Division 1 race at New England Dragway on August 23. There he qualified #1 with a 6.70/204.08. The field was short so Arnie got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 6.94/207.37. He met Manzo in the semifinals and got a good leave with his 6.82/206.42 beating Frank's quicker 6.69/206. He was to face Gary Southern in the final, but Gary had broken in his semifinal win so Karp soloed for the title with a engine saving 7.11/132.15. |

Notes: Al Cerrone also was a partner and sponsor. Arnie was in New England early in August for the NHRA Division 1 final. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.52/211.76. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.48/212.51 beat Dennis Bedrosian's 6.58/216. In the semifinal, John Samolyk fouled against him, and Arnie advanced with a 6.51/211.76. He faced Dick Bell in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Karp's 6.47/214.28 finish runner-up to Bell's 6.48/214. |

Notes: Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | The "Strangler" was at Maple Grove on June 22 for the third NHRA Division 3 race. A 6.53/209.80 qualified #7 for the eight-car show. In the opening round, Arnie ran another 6.53 at 211.76, but it wasn't enough to beat Bob Newberry's 6.45/212. Karp won the NHRA Northstar Nationals in August. He qualified #4 for the eight-car show with a 6.50/218.44. An opening round 6.45/217.39 beat Tommy Johnson Jr., and in the semifinals, he improved to 6.40/217.91 to beat Pat Austin's 6.45/218. He faced the always tough Frank Manzo in the final. Arnie ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.38/218.44, to win, while Frank ran his worst run, a 6.50/217, for the runner-up spot. | Ran NHRA Columbus OH 6/86, NHRA St Pie QU 6/86, NHRA Englishtown NJ 7/86, NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/86 |

Notes: Arnie was at Englishtown on May 3 for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.50/214.28 behind Frank Manzo's 6.40/221. These two would work their way into the final. Karp beat Ed Parker in the first round, with a 6.43/214.79 and a 6.45/213.77 in the semifinals beat John Samolyk. Manzo held his edge and beat Karp for the title in the final. At the IHRA Springnationals, he lasted until the second round before fouling against Bob Newberry. He did much better at the next IHRA event, the Summernationals at Atco. Karp's 6.39/218.97 beat Carol Burkett's quicker 6.37/218 in the final. He was in Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a 6.57/211.86 qualified #15. An opening round 6.54/214.38 beat Burkett's 6.55/212. A second-round 6.59/213.42 fell to Fred Mandoline's 6.50/214. The following week (June 21), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals, combined with a Division 1 race. Karp qualified #2 with a 6.45/215.31. Another 6.45 at 214.79 in the first round, beat Dick Bell's 6.49/214, but in the semifinals, his 6.41 (Low ET) at 216.86 lost to Pete Gallen's 6.42/217. The following week (June 28), he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Karp qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.51/214.74. In the opening round, his 6.58/213.06 defeated Herb Rogers, and in the semifinals, he ran 6.48/214.64, beating low qualifier Al DaPozzo's 6.57/209. He faced Gallen in the final, and Arnie fouled, shutting down to 12.91 for the runner-up spot. Shortly after that (July 5), he went to Milan Dragway and won the IHRA Northern Nationals. Steady 6.4's got him the win as he beat Dan Nimmo with a 6.42/220.04 and Don Gerardot with a 6.43/220.04. He faced Newberry in the final, and Bob had been advancing with 6.3's. But a quick leave, combined with a 6.43/217, got Karp the victory over Newberry's slightly better 6.42/221. Only fourteen cars showed at Englishtown in what was supposed to be a sixteen-car field for the NHRA Summernationals. Qualifying wasn't a big deal, but Karp still hammered out a 6.50/212.66 to qualify #6. He improved to 6.48/214.28 in round one to beat George Peters. He had a close race against Burkett in round two that saw his 6.50/213.42 fall to her 6.49/214. Brainerd was his next stop for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. This was an eight-car show, and he qualified #4 with a time of 6.47/215.10. Arnie was late off the line in round one, and his 6.44/214.38 lost to Danny Townsend's 6.50/212. He next stopped off at Norwalk at the end of August for the IHRA World Nationals. Karp ran as well as 6.46/220.05, but he lost to Bogie Kell in the final. Everyone was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Over 30 cars were attempting to qualify. Arnie's 6.35/221.18 qualified #10. In round one, he upset the #2 qualifier, Gallen, with a 6.39/223.04 to Peter's 6.42/225. But in round two, he was upset. The only Rodeck-powered car to qualify, driven by John Powell, ran 6.40/218 to beat his 6.39/219.72. Speaking about upsets, it was surprising that the "Boston Strangler" failed to qualify at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Karp's 6.44/215.77 was the first alternate for the eight-car field. The race was pushed back a week due to rain, so Arnie left and went to Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. There, he qualified #1. His 6.345/224.43 set a new IHRA speed record in the second round while defeating Newberry. Dal Denton fouled against him in the semifinal, and he advanced with a 6.42/222.77. He faced Greg Moss in the final, and Karp was unstoppable as he ran 6.34/220.58 for the victory. 6.354 221.18 at NHRA Indianapolis, IN 9/87. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Notes: The "Boston Strangler" team had one of its best seasons ever in '88. In mid-March, the season started with a runner-up finish at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.25/220 qualified #3. It looked like Karp's day was done in the semi-final when he smoked the tires and shut off against Art Hendey, but Art crossed the centerline, and Arnie found himself in the final with Dal Denton. Once again, the "Boston Strangler" had its tires go up in smoke, and Denton grabbed the win. The following week (March 20), the team was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Arnie qualified #1 with a 6.16/226.58. He beat Larry Reep in the opening round with a 6.18/227.04, followed by a 6.19/223.32 in round two that defeated Hendey. Bob Newberry's transmission broke in the semi-final, and Karp ran 6.17/226.52 to advance. He faced Pat Austin in the final, and Karp had problems and shut down to 10.72/77.92 in a runner-up finish to Austin's 6.19/226. Yet another runner-up finish followed on March 27 at DeSoto for the IHRA Supernationals, where he finished second to Hendey. In April, he was in Texas for the IHRA Texas Nationals. His 6.17/226.52 qualified #3, and he improved to 6.16/227 in the first round. He set both ends of the IHRA record in the second round with a 6.14/228.60. Unfortunately, he lost to Newberry's 6.15/226 on that run. On May 1st, he won the NHRA Division 1 opener at Englishtown. His 6.16/224.43 qualified #3. A 6.34/223.88 in round one beat Ed Parker's 6.56/215. He and the low qualifier had a great race in the semi-finals, where both ran 6.17 (Arnie at 227.27), but Karp got the "win" light. In the final, his 6.14/229.59 got the victory over Peter Gallen's 6.20/227. The following week, he won the Spring FC Nationals at Maple Grove. He set Top Speed at 225.00 before beating John Samolyk's 6.23/222 in the final with a quick-leaving 6.31/210.77. He also won the third NHRA Division 1 race held at Maryland International near the end of May. His 6.32/220.48 qualified second to Newberry's 6.28/223. In round one, a 6.35/220.75 beat Parker's 6.69/209. Gallen fouled against him in the semi-final, and Arnie advanced with a 6.34/216. It looked like he was in trouble for the final as he faced Newberry, who had run quicker and faster on every run. But Karp picked it up in the final, setting Low ET with his 6.27/222.77 defeating Newberry's 6.36/223. His next stop was at Atco in the first week of June for the IHRA Summernationals. He lasted until the semi-final before fouling away a 6.27/225 against Denton's 6.32/221. He qualified #4 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.30/223.26. In round one, he got a free ride when Al DaPozzo failed to show and ran 6.45/220.15. But he was late off the line in round two, and his 6.39/222.33 lost to eventual winner Tommy Johnson Jr's 6.42/218. The team was not running up to par near the end of the month at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. Karp's 6.44/217.39 "only" qualified #7 for the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.48/215.82 fell to Frank Manzo's 6.37/219. Manzo also got him in the first round at the NHRA Grandnationals. Arnie's 6.37/219.51 qualified #5 in the eight-car field, forcing him to run low qualifier Manzo in the opening round. Frank's 6.20 easily beat Arnie's 6.44. Photo from Columbus 1988. |
