Notes: Kirk was at Bristol at the end of May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified with a 7.50/185.78, and after an easy first-round win, he ran 7.57/184.72 over Morris Johnson Jr. in round two. In the semi-final, he beat Harold Denton with a 7.56/184.63. In the final, he was matched against Tommy Mauney, and Kirk slowed to 7.62/184.04 in a runner-up finish to Mauney's 7.52/187. The next IHRA event was the Gateway Nationals, held in St. Louis near the middle of June. Doug qualified #3 there with a 7.42 and beat Neil Moyer in round one. He lost to Terry Walters in the second round. His next stop was at New York International at the beginning of July for the IHRA Empire Nationals. He ran well, stopping Denton in round two with a 7.38/187.32. But in the semi-final, his 7.42 lost to eventual winner Mauney's 7.34. Still, with his semi-final finish, he moved into fourth place in the points. The Pro Stock cars were flying at Atco in August for the IHRA Eastern Nationals. Kirk's 7.35 (Low ET) at 189.69 qualified #1. He beat Terry Housley in the first round, and in round two, his 7.37/190.01 defeated Mauney. In the semi-final, Doug's 7.40/190 stopped Denton's 7.47. In the final, he went up against Tim Nabors in the final, and Kirk's late 7.38 finished runner-up to Nabors' 7.41. He scored a big win at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals and moved into second in points,20 behind Mauney. His 7.51/183.48 beat Carlton Phillips in the final. David Moseley built the car. |

Notes: Doug qualified #3 at the IHRA Winternationals and went on to win over Terry Adams. At Atco on April 27 for the IHRA Eastern Nitrous Nationals, he lost to Billy Ewing in the first round. He qualified #5 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 7.29/191.48 and he lasted until the semifinal where Steve Williford's 7.34 beat his quicker, but later 7.30. That was followed up by a big win at the fifth race of the season, the IHRA Empire Nationals, where a 7.23/193.69 beat Rickie Smith's quicker 7.21/192 in the final. A 7.11/193.96 qualified #1 at the IHRA World Nationals and he beat Floyd Cheek and Steve Williford before losing to Smith in the semifinal. On September 20, he finished runner-up to Harold Denton at the IHRA US Open. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals, he qualified third with a 7.17/192.64. In the first round, he set a 7.09 track record at 193.87 while defeating Charlie Garrett. He lost a close second round race to Billy Huff with Huff's 7.11/195 beating Kirk's 7.12/194.33. Kirk won the IHRA points championship in Pro Stock with 5,886 points compared to second place finisher Rickie Smith's 5,390. |

Notes: Doug ran hard on the IHRA trail in '92. At the season-opening Winternationals at Darlington, he qualified #13 with a 7.05/196.03. In the first round, he faced Billy Huff and lost with a 7.13/195.43 to Billy's 7.06/199. He won the next two IHRA events, the Nitrous Nationals at the 1/8 mile Huntsville track, where he qualified #2 with a 4.56/156.06 and made his way to the final where he met Gary Van Vallis and the Cornplex Nitrous Nationals where he qualified #7 with a 7.27/192.06 and in the final, his 7.24/192.71 beat a fouling Todd Tutterow. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals on May 31, Kirk qualified #8 with a 7.18/193.42. In the first round, a 7.16/194.26 advanced when Tutterow broke. In the second round, a 7.15/194.93 beat Jim Revis' quicker 7.11/194. In the semifinals, Rickie Smith's 7.09/195 beat Doug's 7.13/194.93. The next stop on the IHRA tour was in Canada for the Summernationals held at Cayuga on June 21. There, a 7.05/196.46 qualified Doug #5. A first-round 7.04/196.85 beat Sherrie Kamp, but in the second round, Carlton Phillips ran Low ET of the meet in beating him with a 6.99/197, stopping Kirk's 7.03/196.37. The IHRA Empire Nationals was the next race that ran on July 5. Doug used a 7.13/195.60 to qualify #8. A 7.22/185.45 advanced past the first-round when Steve Williford fouled against him. In the second round, a 7.17/194.88 lost to Huff's 7.10/196. Kirk qualified #7 with a 7.15/196.03 at the next race, the IHRA Northeast Nitrous Nationals at Epping, on July 19. He ran a first-round 7.21/195.14 over Robert McDonald's 7.20/194, but once again, he lost in the second round. This time, Harold Denton's 7.11/196 beat Doug's off pace 7.29/195.39. At Ohio Valley Raceway for the IHRA Bluegrass Nationals, another 1/8 mile race, a 4.59/155.17 qualified #4. He met Huff in the second round, and despite a quicker et of 4.58/156.16, he lost to Huff's 4.60/156. On August 16, he was at the Nebraska Motorplex for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals. He qualified #6 with a 7.12/195.31. Unfortunately, he met Huff in the first round, and lost a close 7.17/194 to Doug's 7.18/193.34. He ran well at the IHRA World Nationals, qualifying #7 with a 7.12/194.97 and running 7.17/193.09 over Kamp, a 7.16/192.14 single when Floyd Cheek broke, and another 7.16/193.00 in the semifinal over a tire shaking Jerry Yeoman. In the final, he ran Jim Revis, and Revis' 7.13/194 beat Kirk's 7.19/193.34. Up until this time, Doug had been running a relatively small 732 cubic inch motor, but back at Epping in September for the IHRA North American Nationals, he showed up with a 786. The extra cubes showed up in qualifying as a 6.95/200.75 was only second to Huff. A first-round 7.00/200.75 beat Joe Folgore's 7.23/192, and a 6.98/200.40 in the second round was good, but not good enough as Chris Hunt's 7.00/198 beat him to the finish. At the IHRA US Open at Darlington, Doug continued to run strong as a 7.02/198.76 qualified #6. He advanced past the first-round with a 7.12/193.97 when McDonald fouled, and a 7.09/196.54 got past Morris Johnson Jr's 7.16/191. In the semifinals, a 7.11/196.46 beat Jerry Yeoman's killing 15.70. In the final, he was up against Huff. Doug tried hard, but a 7.15/194.51 lost to Billy's 7.09/196. At the season-ending IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, Doug ran a 7.11/196.50 to qualify #9. He beat Hunt in the first round, with a 7.16/196.03 and an improved 7.08/196.89 got past John Nobile's 7.22 in the second round. Yeoman ran a 7.09/195 to put Kirk's 7.15/195.56 on the trailer in the semifinals. |

Notes: 1993 IHRA World Champion. Ran 786 inch motor, too. | Doug started his season at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He was running the 786 combo there to qualify #3 with a 6.93/199.82. He went on to win the race by stopping Roy Hill in the first round, with a 6.95/200.93, a 7.04/200.93 advanced past a broken Jerry Yeoman in round two, and a 6.94/200.93 stopped Terry Walter's 7.15/194 in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Tim Nabors and Doug ran a 6.96/198.15 to get the victory over Tim's 7.05/195. Kirk followed that up by winning the next IHRA event as well, the Bama Nationals in April. It was a 1/8 mile track and Doug set a new track record 4.49 (also a new IHRA 1/8 mile record) in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 159.77. Kirk was tough, running steady 4.5's to win. A 4.54/158.70 beat Terry Housley and in round two, a 4.59/158.87 beat Robert Patrick's 4.64/156. In the semifinals his 4.57/157.72 beat Charlie Garrett's better 4.53/157. This time he met Terry Leggett in the final. Terry was no slouch running 4.50 twice during the race, but in the final he fouled away a 4.52/157 that made Kirk's 4.51/159.60 the winner. He was hoping to make it three out of three at the third IHRA race of the season, the Springnationals at Bristol. He almost did it, coming away with a runner-up finish. Doug qualified #1 with a track record 7.02 at 197.88. He beat Chris Hunt in round one, with a 7.06/197.88 and in round two a 7.14/197.80 beat Darrick Nykaza. In the semifinals, he beat Floyd Cheek's Probe with a 7.10/197.67. This put him into the final against Rickie Smith. It was a close race, but Smith took the win with a 7.11/196 beating Kirk's 7.15/196.03. He returned to his winning form at the IHRA Empire Nationals where once again he reset the track record while qualifying #1 with a 7.02 at 197.32. He had a bit of luck when in the first round, he ran an off-pace 7.28/196.16, but still won over Yeoman who shut off due to tire shake. In the second round, he advanced with a 7.11/196.76 when Craig Hankinson fouled. Another 7.11 at 196.33 beat John Nobile in the semifinals. In the final he faced off with Cheek. Floyd was about a tenth off in performance and that’s how they finished with Doug's 7.15/196.67 scoring his third IHRA event win in four tries over Cheek's 7.22/191. Throughout these four races, Kirk had been running the 786 motor, but he went to an 802 in July for the Mountain Motor Nationals at Maryland International. The race was rained out, but not until after qualifying and round one of eliminations. Kirk qualified #2 with a 7.03/197.97 and he won his first-round race with a 7.06/197.23. Then the rains came and the race did not resume. Atco was the next stop on the IHRA circuit for the Summernationals. Doug continued his domination. He qualified #2 with a 6.93/198.67. He beat Nykaza in round one, with a 7.02/197.75. A second round 717/197.23 beat Hunt in round two while in the semifinals, both he and Hill ran 7.02 (Kirk at 197.80), but Doug got the win. In the final, he met low qualifier Harold Denton in the "Party Time" Firebird. Kirk gave Denton a bit of a driving lesson as his 6.99/198.67 beat Harold's quicker 6.97/205. After winning four out of five IHRA races thus far in '93, Doug looked like a sure bet to win the IHRA Northeast Nationals at New England Dragway. He went back to the 786 engine for this race and qualified #2 with a 6.96/200.93. All the other Pro Stock drivers must have let out a moan when in the first round, Kirk set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.93/201.47 while beating Nykaza's 7.08/197. He advanced past a fouling Mark Thomas in round two with a 7.02/201.25, but in the semifinals, Denton put him out with a 6.99/200 to Doug's 7.09/200.44. |

Notes: Doug set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.85 at 203. The 6.85 reset the IHRA ET record. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.91/201.92 beat David Jenkins' 7.11/195. However, in round two, his 6.96/200.93 was defeated by Robert Patrick's 6.92/201. In mid-April, he was at Carolina Dragway for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. Kirk qualified #9 with a 4.57/159.03. He didn't hang around in eliminations for long, as Billy Huff's 4.75/155 in the opening round defeated his 4.96/156.38. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. There he ran 7.05/198.85 to qualify #7. He and arch-rival Huff duked it out in round one, where Kirk's 7.08/197.67 sent Huff's 7.18/196 packing for home. In round two, Kirk's 7.12/197.02 lost to Craig Hankinson's 7.10/196. IHRA's next event was the IHRA Supernationals held at Alabama International on June 19. Doug ran 6.97/199.64 to qualify #4. A first-round 7.02/198.28 took out Mark Thomas' 7.20/197, but in round two, his late 7.03/198.67 lost to Charlie Garrett's 7.07/192. He got his first and only IHRA victory of the year at the IHRA Empire Nationals held at New York International. There, he had run 6.99/201.83 to qualify #2 behind Floyd Cheek's 6.98. He improved to 6.97/200.75 in round one, to stop Steve Williford's 7.11/196. In round two, he stayed consistent with a 7.00/200.57 to beat John Nobile's 7.07/199. Patrick fouled against him in the semifinals, so Kirk eased it through with a 7.92/163.30 to advance. He faced Cheek in the final, and Floyd had the advantage; he had run 6.97, 6.94, and 6.93 to reach the final. But Doug picked it up in the final and ran 6.91/203.11 for the victory over Cheek's 6.96/201. |

Notes: Doug started the 1995 season by winning the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. He set a new IHRA ET record of 6.77 in qualifying on the pole, and his speed of 205 on the run was a new track record. After an easy first round, he beat a fouling Charlie Peppers in round two with a 6.82/203.61. A 6.80/204.49 beat Robert Patrick in the semifinals, and in the final, he met up with Harold Denton's Firebird. Denton broke, and Doug's 6.78/204.45 took the victory. He ran well at the IHRA Supernationals in Alabama. In the second round, his 6.82/204.22 beat Carlton Phillips, but in the semifinals, both he and Jon Yoak ran 6.82s, with Jon getting the win by a light margin. Kirk won the third IHRA race of the season, the President's Cup Championships at Maryland International. He qualified #1 with a 6.80 (Low ET). Then he stayed in the low 6.8s to win. A second round 6.84/203.57 beat Billy Huff, while a 6.83/203.43 advanced into the final when Floyd Cheek broke. A final round 6.85/202.83 beat Williford for the victory. |

Upset No. 1 qualifier John Montecalvo (photo) in Round 1 with a 6.84/203 and Stewart Evans in Round 2 with a 6.86/202. He lost in the semis to Jerry Yeoman's holeshot, a 6.86/202 beating a 6.85/202. Ran 6.626/207.46 in pre-season testing at Darlington 1/14/98. Kirk really opened some eyes at Bradenton at the end of March for the IHRA Winternationals. He ran 6.76/202.88 to qualify #6 ahead of every GM product in the field and behind five Fords. As good as that was, he lost in the opening round, where his 6.85/202.74 fell to Carl Baker's 6.81/202. The second IHRA race of the year was the Southern Nationals held at Darlington early in May. Unfortunately, his 6.82/202.61 best(fifth alternate) failed to qualify. Things went better at Cordova, where a 6.85/201.25 qualified #6 for the IHRA Summernationals. An off-pace 6.99/199.46 lost to Ron Miller's troubled pass of 6.96/190. |
