Notes: Jimmy qualified #1 for the 32-car field at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.93. In the first round, his 7.02/193.94 advanced. Unfortunately, he lost to Ron Goodsell in round two. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #23 with a 7.18/220.58. But in the first round, his 7.48/212.76 lost to Don Cook's 7.22. King borrowed Frank Federici's engine to put into his "Shark" Corvette at New England on May 11. Frank only made one pass, a 7.99/182. Maybe King and Marshall were thinking ahead about going FC racing. King and Marshall scored a big victory over Don Prudhomme on May 18 in New England. It was a best of three match, and the "Snake" won the first race with a new track record 6.82. In the second race, King reset the track record with a 6.76 at 218 to beat Prudhomme's 6.89/216. Jimmy won the match. On May 31, Capitol held an eight-car show, and Jimmy set Low ET at 6.97 in qualifying #1. He fouled against Bub Reese, who was driving the "Wheeler-Dealer" in the semifinal, but he got back into the final when Sarge Arciero blew his engine and crashed while winning his semifinal race. Once again, Reese and King lined up, this time for all the marbles, but Reese again got the win, with his 7.13/222 topping King's 7.30/216. Bristol was the next stop for the team for the AHRA Springnationals. Jimmy qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until round two, where his quicker 7.06 lost to Preston Davis' 7.09. On August 24, Jimmy went to Connecticut and set a 6.84 track record. He had already held the mph mark at 227.84. Also 220.58 at Pomona Winternationals 2/69. |

Notes: Jimmy qualified #17 at Pomona at 6.907/216.34. He upset low qualifier Norm Wilcox in round one with a 6.97/213.27 to 6.93 holeshot. He defeated Herm Petersen in round two with a consistent 6.93/213.27 to Herm's 7.40/213.77. King & Marshall kept on rolling in round three with a 6.82/218.44 defeat or Don Moody at 8.55/126.40. Kenny Safford ended Jimmy's day with his own holeshot in the semis, 6.85/217.91 to 6.79/218.44. The promise Jim showed at Pomona paid off in Gainesville. He qualified #4 at 6.590/221.13. In round one, Jimmy took out Jim Hundley, 6.67/225.56 to 6.88/220.58. Marvin Schwartz did not show for their round two matchup, and Jimmy rolled through at 7.25/139.96. He beat Bob Gibson in round three, 6.64/223.32 to 7.36/178.92. In the final, Jim was up against the always-tough Sarge Arciero. He strapped more than a tenth on him at the start, earning a 6.905/178.57 to 6.803/217.91 holeshot victory. King qualified #15 at the Summernatinoals at 6.895 (no speed). He lost to Jim Harnsberger in round one, 6.91/199.11 to 6.93 (no speed). That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. King & Marchall had blower straps before many other cars. Notes: King was in New England in June for its Spring Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the first round, his 6.95/193 beat Arnie Swensen's Mustang. In round two, a better 6.80/214 lost to the race's eventual winner Bill Leavitt's 6.70/211. Shortly after that, he was in Connecticut for its first sixteen-car show of the season. King ran 7.30/178 in the opening round to beat the "Freedom Machine," but he fell to Lew Arrington's "Brutus" in round two. It wasn't long before he was back in New England for another sixteen-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.13/199 advanced over Shirley Muldowney's ailing Satellite. But in round two, his 6.91/208 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.89/208. Back at Connecticut for its Summer Funny Car Championships, Jimmy didn't hang around long as his 7.11/199.55 in the first round, lost to Dean LaPole's 7.16/205 in the "King Camaro." King was at Englishtown on July 4 for its Funny Car Spectacular. But once again, he left early as his off-pace 7.93/161.29 in the opening round lost to Pat Foster's 6.36/209 in the Barry Setzer Vega. Jimmy had one of the four Funny Cars competing in a match at Connecticut in September. In his first race, he ran 6.76/200.89 over Raymond Beadle, driving one of Don Schumacher's cars. In his second race, King ran 6.65/215.31 to beat Bill Leavitt's 6.76/171, and he went unbeaten in his third race when Tom Prock broke, and Jimmy soloed with a 6.87/204.54. Match racer. The 130" WB was too long for legal Funny Car competition. |

Notes: Jimmy failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. New England held a Funny Car show in April, and Jimmy wasn't running too well, hitting a best of 7.15/199 and failing to reach the finals. Shortly after, he was at Maple Grove for its Spring Funny Car Championships. He made it into the final against Dodger Glenn, who was driving the "Frantic Ford," The two had one of the slowest Funny Car finals ever. King lost a clutch and ran 12.97 to lose, while Glenn broke a rear end and idled down the track at 12.52 for the victory. Early in May, he was at York US 30 for the Funny Car Nationals, but he lost to Glenn in the opening round. His next stop was at Lebanon Valley for the Ridgerunner Funny Car Classic. A first-round 7.04/206.89 advanced when his opponent Jimmy Byrd crashed, but in the semifinals, his off-pace 7.29 lost to the race's eventual winner Tommy Grove, at 6.99. Also, in May, he was in Connecticut for its Memorial Day Championships. All eight cars were to run two rounds of racing. Jimmy set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.76/210.77 over a crossed-up Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse." In the second round, he almost repeated those numbers with his 6.77/210.77 beating Arne Swensen's 6.86/183. |

Notes: Jimmy was at Atco Dragway in May for the CARS Magazine Meet. It was an eight-car show, and he blew the engine in the first round against Al Segrini. In September, King lost in the first round at the New England Funny Car Nationals. His off-pace 7.38/185 lost to Dick Custy's even slower 7.42/151. Jimmy blew the Satellite body off in midseason 1976 and finished the year with a new Monza shell. |

Notes: King debuted the new Monza at Epping on April 17 for its first FC Tourney race of the season. In the opening round, his 6.98/170 lost to Kosty Ivanoff's 6.32/205. In the second round, he improved to 6.60/200 to beat Les Cassidy's 7.08/168. Also 6.64 at Epping 1977. In this incident, pictured, King lost the reverser and was driving the car back to the starting line. When he swung around to return to his lane, he whacked the throttle and drove into his competitor's truck. |

An opening round 7.30/179 beat Dee Simmons' 8.24/174, and in round two, he fouled against Dale Pulde. King was in Connecticut in September for an eight-car show. An opening round 7.01 beat Rodalyn Knox, and in the semifinal, his 6.96/205.47 defeated George Johnson, who got out of shape. He faced Roy Harris driving the "Brutus" in the final. Notes: Jimmy qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.718/236.22. A first-round 5.733/220.58 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.40/262. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.691/241.02 qualified on the "bump spot." Gwynn got him again in the first round; this time, Darrell's 5.54/251 stopped Jimmy's 5.88/210.18 from advancing. The next major NHRA meet was the Southern Nationals in April. There, Jimmy ran 5.792/241.41 to qualify #15. He shut down in the first round and lost to Gary Ormsby. He had troubles at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, and his best of 6.107/220.26 failed to qualify. Jimmy was the fifth alternate at Columbus at 6.151/228.02. He qualified #12 at Sanair at 5.950/213.98 and lost to Shirley Muldowney in round one, 5.52/261 to 6.132/206.51. The team was back on the DNQ list at the Summernationals with a 6.34/158.50, finishing in the #8 alternate slot. The team found the fives again in Indy, but their 5.732/244.69 was the fourth alternate. Jimmy qualified #15 at Maple Grove at 5.698/243.50 but foulded away a 5.711/221.02 against Don Garlits in round one. At Ennis, Jimmy went 5.910/240.51 for the fifth alternate slot.
