Notes: Before the Probe, Chuck drove a Competition Roadster with Lou Smith. Lou bought the Probe, and dad got the ride. Then that's how he later got the ride with the Ramchargers. - Chuck Kurzawa III, Draglist LIVE, 2/27/23 | Kurzawa was at Detroit Dragway on May 28 for a best-of-three-match race against "Sneaky Pete" Robinson. The race didn't go Chuck's way, and he lost two straight to Pete, running an 8.64/190.26 best. Chuck raced at the NHRA Springnationals in Bristol on June 5. He beat Joe Schubeck in the Ramchargers car on a holeshot in round one, 7.843/206.42 to 7.829/208.80, but broke in round two against R.L. Peyton. Early in August, he was in Pittsburgh for a NASCAR Circuit race. He was running well; his 7.86/197.36 beat Wilson and Carey in the semifinal. He faced Val LaPorte in the final, and Val got the jump, and his 7.88/197 held on to win over Chuck's 7.74/199.10. The NASCAR Summer Championships were held at Dragway 42 on August 21. The "Probe" qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.6. In the opening round, his 7.80/205.46 fell to Connie Kalitta's 7.74/202. He won the NASCAR Circuit race at Maple Grove on October 9. Although he had "only" qualified with an 8.09, he set Low ET in the first round on a 7.67 solo when Ray Marsh was shut off on the line with an oil leak. A 7.68/197.80 defeated Ron Rivero in the "K&G" car in the semifinal. Al Daurenheim failed to fire in the final, and Chuck ran 7.68/196 for the victory. |

Notes: Chuck was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against Don Prudhomme in Lou Baney's Ford. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #15 with a 7.140/221.60. His 7.283 defeated Bob Mayer in the opening round, but he fouled against Ron Rolstad in round two, wasting a 7.25/220.58. The team was at OCIR for the 64-car PDA Championships in March. The cars all made runs during qualifying. With 80 cars there, Kurzawa had the best average speed of two runs at 225.28. He lasted until round four, where his 7.08 lost to Don Garlits' 6.86. On May 29, Chuck won the Pittsburgh Eastern Fuel Dragster Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 7.19/215.30 beat Tom McEwen. In the semifinal, his 7.20/208.80 defeated Larry Bucher. He faced the always-tough Vic Brown in the final. The two had a good race that saw Kurzawa reset the track record, with his 7.09 at 209.78 beating Vic's 7.15/216. The team's next stop was at New York National for the Smokers Meet. While Chuck didn't reach the final, he set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 6.67 and 230.76. The "Ramchargers" did not have a good day at Englishtown in the middle of June for the NHRA Springnationals. Kurzawa blew two engines in qualifying. His 6.838/220.58 held up for the pole for the sixteen-car field. The team installed another engine for his first-round race against Mike Snively, driving the "Hawaiian." Not only did Chuck foul, but he also blew the team's third engine of the weekend as he laid down a 6.778/216.86 with the engine going away 300 feet before the finish line. Chuck qualified #3 at Indy at 6.810/225.56. He beat Mike Snively in round one, 7.63/216.34 to 8.41/165.44. In round two, he beat Wayne King, 6.87/223.32 to 6.98/229.00. Tom Hoover ended Chuck's day in round three, 6.83/214.28 to 7.06/219.50. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Chuck qualified #27 with the new Logghe Bros. car at Pomona at 7.230/212.74. He won round one over Kelly Brown, 7.00/202.70 to 7.10/213.27, despite a massive engine explosion. Chuck could not show for round two, sending Leroy Goldstein to an 8.01/136.98 solo. That was the last NHRA national event for the team this year. | The paint was not even dry on the car when they went to Pomona. A huge explosion in round two sawed the car in half. Notes: In 1982, Chuck built four identical cars, one for Connie Kalitta, Scott Kalitta's first car, George Tolon's car, and Stan Rosen's Ego Trip. Chuck did not run any NHRA national events in 1983. | The car was his, and Stan Rosen owned the motor. The Popular Hot Rodding event in 1983 was the last event he ran. He later sold the car to Jack Ostrander. - Chuck Kurzawa III, Draglist LIVE, 2/27/23 |
