Notes: The car was known as the Dick LaHaie / Go Shop / Original Road Runner. LaHaie ran a lot of UDRA circuit races in the midwest. He was on his way to one on April 14 at National Trail when he got into an accident. His tow rig was completely demolished, and his whole family had to go to the hospital to get checked out. Everyone was ok, but he obviously did not make the race at Columbus. He was at Muncie on June 9 for one of the circuit races. His 7.79/199.54 lost to Jim Lutz's 7.45/194 in the Creasy Brothers car in the opening round. On June 22, the UDRA held another race at Cordova. It was an eight-car show. They ran 1,000 feet, and he got an easy pass in the first round when Noel Mauer fouled. In the semifinal, his 6.69/192 beat Ron Colson's sleepy 6.44/189 in the "Sterling Speed" car. He faced Mauer again in the final after Mauer had got back into the show. Once again, Dick caught a good light, and his 6.61/166 beat Noel's much better 6.48/201. The following week, he was at Edgewater for a circuit race. Unfortunately, he lost in the opening round with an off-pace 7.89/176.81. The next stop for the circuit came at Martin, Michigan. He lost in the first round again, where his 7.22/214.28 fell to eventual winner Dave Powers. His speed was the best of the race. |

Notes: Ran 6.19 at Tri-City, 6.31 at Columbus, 6.23 at Englishtown, 6.38 at Indy, 6.24 at unknown location. | Dick was first alternate at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a best of 6.37/227.27, but he got into the show when Dwight Salisbury broke. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.26/229.00 failed to get past Gary Beck's 6.15/231. He went to Pomona, but failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals. At the NHRA Division 3 Opener, Dick's 6.37 qualified #5 in the eight-car field forcing him to run low qualifier, Billy Campbell in the first round. In that race, Campbell’s 6.18/222 got the win light over his 6.40/223.88. The NHRA Springnationals saw a 6.31 qualify him in the #12 spot in the show, but a first-round 6.37/224.43 lose to Herm Petersen's 6.30/227. Dick's next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He led qualifying on Friday with a 6.23/233.16, but when qualifying ended, the time held for the #4 spot in the field. Things didn't go to well in round one, however, as he smoked the tires to 6.51/208.81 that lost to Pat Dakin's 6.26/227. A week later (July 21) he won the Beech Bend All-American race. There he beat Flip Schofield in the final. 6.31 223.88 1974 NHRA US Nationals. |

Notes: This car was destroyed in a top end accident at the 1975 NHRA US Nationals. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Qualified on the bump at the 75 Winters with a 6.09. | Dick failed to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals his 6.09 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. A 6.20/235.60 in the first round, beat Shirley Muldowney, but in round two Don Garlits' 6.00/234 beat Dick's 6.33/184.42. The NHRA Gatornationals is a race LaHaie would rather forget. He debuted a new Logghe built car there, but during qualifying he crashed. He had just made his run and pulled the 'chute, his helmet filled up with air pressure and forced his head back against the roll cage. At that time the throttle stuck wide open, and he went through the timing lights at 6.47/234.76. He continued off the end of the track where he crashed the dragster into some trees. He came out of it with a broken left arm. Dick was not able to drive for awhile, but he was back behind the wheel in June for the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. |

Notes: LaHaie attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.05/231.36 failed to qualify (first alternate). He did manage to qualify #9 at the Gatornationals, but he lost to Gary Beck's Low ET shot of 5.71/243 in the first round. Dick went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he broke in the semifinals while facing off against eventual winner Richard Tharp. He did win the Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins with a final round 6.24/204.08. The second Division 2 race held at DeSoto Memorial only had two Top Fuel cars show. So to win, Dick just had to beat Bob Strauss, which he did with a 6.33/226.13. He almost did as well at the next Division 2 race, taking the runner-up spot to Jeb Allen at Gulfport International. Unfortunately, a best of 6.15/228.42 failed to make the show (third alternate) at the NHRA Springnationals. Dick rebounded by winning the next Division 2 race at Blaney with a final round 6.24 over Bob Strauss. He got his first NHRA National event win at the Summernationals on July 13. He qualified #5 with a 5.94/233.76 and a first-round 5.99/236.84 beat Bob Simmons. In the second round, a 6.00 took out Tharp in the "Candies and Hughes" car, and in the semifinal, he beat a tire-smoking Connie Kalitta. Facing him in the final was Jeb Allen, who had set Low ET at 5.85. Dick ran a consistent 5.95/235.60 to win over Jeb's 6.04/238. The following week (July 20), Dick was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.99 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, and he lost to low qualifier Marvin Graham in the first round. At the end of July, he was at Union Grove for the NHRA Division 3 race. Dick qualified #2 with a 6.06, and in the first round, his 6.25 beat Lou Novotny's 6.47. In the semifinals, LaHaie ran 6.11 to beat Luigi Novelli. In the final, he ran Shirley Muldowney, and despite running a 6.03, he lost to Shirley's 5.90. He then went to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. A 6.02 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he ran 6.08/226.70 to take out Allen, but he lost to Muldowney again in the semifinals. We formerly listed 5.705/240.00 for Dick this year. His best times in NHRA national event competition were 5.910 in Seattle and 238.72 at Englishtown. We are listing those as his best times until we can get confirmation on the 5.70/240. Won Division 2 in 1980. Dick also a 5.991/231.36 at Sanair. When he won the Summernationals over Jeb Allen, going 238 mph, it was the first time he had driven a fueler through the lights under power since his crash in 1975! - Dick LaHaie, Racing & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 |

Notes: Dick started his '81 season by qualifying #1 at the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Shirley Muldowney in a close first-round race with a 6.35/218 beating her 6.37/218. But he lost in the semifinal. Shortly after this, he had all his spare parts, tools, and fire suit stolen from his trailer. He had to borrow equipment to run at Pomona. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #14 with a 5.97/227.84. He ran an off pace 6.07 in the first round, that lost to Johnny Abbott's 5.89/243. At the NHRA Gatornationals in March, he used a 5.85/234.98 to qualify #11. In the first round, Dick ran a strong 5.92/234.37 but lost to Jody Smart's 5.81/245. The following week (March 22), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.00/230 to qualify #4 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.18/224 beat Bobby Hilton's off-pace 6.54/218 in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. In the semifinals, he ran 6.05/231 but lost to eventual winner Richard Tharp's 5.97/232 in the "Candies and Hughes" machine. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. It was a tough field to break into as it was only an eight-car show. Dick's best of 5.90 was good for the third alternate, but he was in good company as Gary Beck, Mark Oswald, Tharp, Connie Kalitta, and others failed to qualify. |

Notes: Dick started the '82 season by qualifying third at the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson Dragway in January He beat Johnny West in the first round, with a 6.12, but fell to Don Garlits in the semifinals when his 6.15 lost to "Big Daddy's" 5.79. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #14 with a 5.85/238.72. A first-round 5.88/234.98 beat Marvin Graham while a second round 5.92/233.76 got around Jody Smart. In the semifinals, he beat a tire-smoking Lucille Lee with a consistent 5.93/234.98 to advance into the final to face Shirley Muldowney. The race failed to materialize when Shirley lost fire on the line and Dick soloed for the victory with a 6.11/231.36. After winning the Winternationals, it was surprising to see LaHaie's name among the list of non-qualifiers at the Gatornationals. His best of 6.014/236.84 in qualifying left him as the second alternate for the show. Dick qualified #15 at Englishtown at 5.839/238.09. He Beat Connie Kalitta in a terrific first-round matchup, 5.932/236.22 to 5.946/236.84. A Kalitta holeshot made for a theoretical dead heat! But Dick got the win light. Jim Barnard beat him in round two, 5.75/238 to 5.878/236.84. Dick qualified #7 at Indy at 5.699/245.90. He beat Jim Head in round one, 5.781/244.56 to 8.06/104. Connie got some revenge in round two, taking a 5.63/240 win when Dick broke. That was Dick's final NHRA national event of the year. | 5.95 252 AHRA US 30 1982 defeating George Tolon in the first round, 5.92 248.96 loss to Bradley in the semis Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds). - Danny White |

Notes: Dick qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.80/242.58. He beat Dick Phillips in the first round, with a 5.73/238.95, but another 5.73 at 240.89 lost to Don Garlits' 5.50/262 in the second round. Things went LaHaie's way at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he used a 5.63/244.56 to qualify #4. He beat an off-pace George Tolon with a 5.72/247.93, and in the second round, he improved to 5.62/252.50 over Connie Kalitta. Dick cut a good light in the semifinals, where his 5.70/250.00 held off Gary Ormsby's quicker 5.57/259. This put LaHaie into the final against Joe Amato. It was a close race, but Dick got the win light with a 5.65/248.69, beating Joe's 5.69/243. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Qualifying was challenging as it was an eight-car show with seventeen cars attempting to qualify. Dick made the show with a 5.65/249.85 that put him in the #5 spot in the field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Garlits. LaHaie ran well in their match, but his 5.75/249.03 finished second best to Don's 5.62/261. He then made a stop at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals, where he won over an eight-car field. He beat Chris Karamesines in the final with a 5.87 Low ET of the meet. LaHaie then went to Alamo Dragway for another eight-car show on May 19. He qualified #1 with a 5.86/238.09 and another 5.86 at 226.70 in the first round beat Bruce Burleson. He picked up slightly to 5.83/236.84 in the semifinals to beat a tire-smoking Karamesines. He got Low ET of the meet with a final round victory over Buddy Warren with a 5.75/223.32. With all his success, it was surprising that the following week (May 26), he failed to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His best of 5.78/240.00 was good for the first alternate. Dick made up for his non-qualifier by running a career-best (to this point) 5.59/253.52 to qualify #2 behind Amato's 5.58 at the NHRA Springnationals. He had some tough competition here as his first-round 5.65/251.81 beat Frank Bradley's 5.73/246. In round two, a 5.66/253.52 beat Darrell Gwynn's 5.69/216. Even his semifinal 5.66/251.81 was good, but he lost to a quick-leaving Bill Mullins, who won with a 5.71/258. LaHaie then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with his 5.62/259.36, and in the opening round, his slightly better 5.60/259.96 fell to eventual winner Garlits' 5.54/260. Dick ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.470 at 259.36 to qualify #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals behind Garlits' 5.43/260. In round one, he beat Dan Pastorini before his 5.62/250.83 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.59/253 in a very close race. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but his 5.83/233.16 failed to qualify for the eight-car show (second alternate). He did not compete at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals as he blew an engine at Kansas City on the Wednesday before the race. He had lots of trouble keeping all eight cylinders lit at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. All three of his qualifying passes came on seven cylinders. He ran 5.67, 5.61, and a 5.60/255.24 that put him into the show in the #6 spot. In the first round, his 5.64/247.66 defeated Pastorini's 5.73/241. In round two, his 5.70/251.25 lost to Gary Ormsby's 5.63/256. Even his two runs in eliminations came on seven cylinders. Dick must have gotten things straightened out by the time he got to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He broke 260 for the first time when he ran 5.51/260.26 and 5.54/261.17 in qualifying. The 5.51 placed him #6 in the eight-car field. In the opening round, a troubled, shut-off 8.37/87.09 lost to Gwynn's 5.60/232. Dick ran 5.51/259 at ADRA Kansas City. |

Notes: Dick started the '86 season by setting Low ET while qualifying #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.40 at 264.70. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round and crossed the centerline, losing to Gary Beck. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.49/258.62. He made his way into the final by stopping Earl Whiting in the first round, with a 5.54/254.66, while a round two 5.54/257.58 beat Darrell Gwynn. Dick stepped up to a 5.47/258.76 in the semifinals to beat Beck's 5.51/260. This put him into the final against Don Garlits. The two had a good race, but Garlits' 5.50/268 beat Dick's 5.56/259.36. Dick ran 5.41 as one-half of the quickest side-by-sider at that point (with Darrell Gwynn at 5.326). Dick qualified #5 at the World Finals and made it to the semifinals with best times of 5.410/261.39. Photo from 1985 Nationals. |

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1988. Finished #5 in 1988. Low qualifier at Gatornationals at 5.154. Also 5.09 at Indy, 283.55 at Gainesville. | The Miller American cars were owned by Dick LaHaie, not Larry Minor. Larry had the sponsorship deal and got Dick to run his car under the colors while Minor raced his own (ex Gary Beck) car and the funny cars. - Dick LaHaie, Racin & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 | Dick started the '88 season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at Firebird Raceway in January He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.22. In round one he set Low ET of the meet with a 5.17 at 269 to beat Dennis Forcelle. A semifinal 5.23/271.90 beat a tire smoking Gary Ormsby and advanced him into the final against Joe Amato. In the final, Amato broke and LaHaie ran 5.24/272.72 for the victory. He followed that up by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. A 5.19 qualified #3. He beat Dan Pastorini in round one, and a 5.24/276 took care of Frank Bradley i round two. In the semifinals he had a close race with Eddie Hill as Dick's 5.21/276 beat Eddie's 5.22/284. In the final he met Amato again, and once again it was the same results. Dick got the victory with a 5.13 (Low ET of the meet) at 275. Dick did not run any IHRA events except for the Chief Nationals in October, so his next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.15/282 got him the pole, but in the first round, Hill stepped up to a 5.08/285 to beat his 5.18/283.55. He also lost early at the next NHRA race, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta where he smoked his tires in the second round and lost to Darrell Gwynn. Memphis was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Mid-South Nationals and Dick's bad luck streak continued. He qualified #4 with a 5.29, but he lost to Forcelle in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals where Gwynn stopped him. Things weren't any better at the NHRA Springnationals where he qualified poorly (#10) and Hill beat him in round one. After early season success, it was a disappointing mid-season, but at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, Dick made it into the final. He qualified #4 for the show with a 5.25/272.06. He beat Pastorini in the first round, while in round two his 5.25/269 beat Hector Pickering. In the semifinals a 5.26/270 dropped Gwynn. This put him in the final against Gene Snow. Gene was running his direct drive car and was running extremely well, hitting 5.17 in his semifinal win. So in the final Snow had the edge and he held it with a 5.19 beating LaHaie's 5.23. At Englishtown he qualified #5 with a 5.24/273.63. He beat Jack Ostrander in the first round, but a 5.33/265 in round two lost to Hill's 5.27/270. The next stop was at Seattle for NHRA's Seafair Nationals. Dick ran a great 5.10 at 279.76 to qualify #3, but in the first round, he went into a wheelstand and shut off, losing to Hill. At the NHRA Winston All-Stars event, he again qualified #3 and again lost in the first round, this time to eventual winner Snow. He made it into another final round at Sears Point for the NHRA California Nationals. LaHaie qualified #2 with a 5.20/272.89 and he beat Tim Morgan in the first round, while in round two a 5.27/271 beat Glenn Mikres. In the semifinals, his 5.30 beat a tire-hazing Frank Hawley and advanced him into the final with Amato. The two had a close race, but Joe's 5.17/274 beat Dick's 5.18/272. |

Notes: Ran 4.983 at NHRA Indianapolis on September 3/1989, to become the sixth member of the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel. Photo from Columbus 1989. Confirmed 287.63 mph at Ennis Fall 89, but mph from Drag Racing List Volume 5, Number 1., Winter 89/90 listed 287.90. Where was that run? | The Miller American cars were owned by Dick LaHaie, not Larry Minor. Larry had the sponsorship deal and got Dick to run his car under the colors while Minor raced his own (ex Gary Beck) car and the funny cars. - Dick LaHaie, Racin & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14 | LaHaie finished the season third in points. I'm sure he went into the year expecting to win more than the three national event wins that he got. But it was still more NHRA wins than he had gotten in '88. The season started with Dick running 5.16/279.32 to qualify #11 at the Winternationals. He lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.05/288 in the first round, with a 5.09/277.43. At the Supernationals, a 5.07 gave him the dreaded #9 qualifying spot and setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Joe Amato which he lost. He qualified in the top half of the show at the Gatornationals when a 5.13 was good for the #6 position. He got past the first-round for the first time this season, but in the second round, he had a tire-smoking battle with Hank Endres and lost. Things had to change and they did at the next event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. LaHaie took the pole with a 5.10/281.69. He beat Frank Bradley's 5.23/277 in the first round, with a 5.15/282.92 (Top Speed). In round two a consistent 5.16/278.46 beat Frank Hawley and in the semifinals a 5.18/279.32 beat Lori Johns. He went on to take his first victory of '89 with a final round 5.13/281.77 over Eddie Hill's 5.19/267. The NHRA tour then swung to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where Dick qualified #6 with a 5.10/284.18. He beat Kalitta in the first round, and a 5.08/284 beat Johns' 5.19 in round two. But in the semifinals against Hill, he had a strut that held the rear wing in place break. It unloaded the car and LaHaie did a great job in bringing the car to a safe stop. The sixth race of the season was the Cajun Nationals. Once again he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.24/277.09 setting up a first-round run against low qualifier Frank Cook. This time, LaHaie won the first-round race and in round two he left on Bradley and won with a 5.22/277 to Frank's quicker 5.19. He overpowered the track in the semifinals and smoked the tires to a loss against Gene Snow. A 5.10/286.07 qualified #8 at the next race, the Springnationals. He beat Paul Smith in round one, but in the second round be lost to Jim Head when they both smoked the tires. It was up to Canada for the Grandnationals in late June. He ran a 5.21/280.54 to qualify #5. A first-round 5.20/279.67 beat John Carey. He improved to a 5.13/282.13 in round two to beat Bradley's 5.17/279. In the semifinals, Amato's 5.25/268 fell to Dick's 5.14/279.58. In the final, he ran Gary Ormsby and a 5.21/274.55 was good for the runner-up spot to Gary's 5.15/278. LaHaie got his second win at the next race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 5.10/283.37 and took out Carey in the first round. In the second round, he ran a solo 5.19/275 when Cook was unable to show. In the semifinals, a 5.15/280 beat a tire-smoking Hill. In the final, he reversed the outcome of the last race when he met Ormsby. A final 5.11/282.04 gave Gary's 5.24/271 the runner-up spot. The thin air of Denver was the next stop for the Mile High Nationals. Dick ran a 5.26/270.51 in qualifying #4. He beat Mike Brotherton in round one, and a 5.35/244 beat Darrell Gwynn in round two, but in the semifinals, both he and Amato ran 5.22's with Amato getting the win. From there it was off to Sonoma for the California Nationals where a 5.06/283.64 qualified #3. He beat Lori Johns in the first round, with a 5.07/281.60, but he broke and was unable to run Gordie Bonin in round two. Dick was runner-up at the next stop, the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. He qualified #6 with a 5.09/285.53 and in round one, a 5.11/283.82 beat Bonin's 5.52. In round two, a consistent 5.10/282.84 beat Bradley's 5.19/278. A semifinal 5.11/281.42 beat Cook's 5.22/275. But even though he stayed consistent in the final with a 5.10/278.98 he lost to a strong running Amato at 5.01/278. At the thirteenth race of the season, the Northstar Nationals, Dick qualified #1 with a 5.12/279.85. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires to a 6.33/160.82 first-round loss to Dennis Forcelle. He ran Indianapolis' first four during qualifying, a 4.98/285.44 that eventually held for the #2 qualifying spot. LaHaie beat Pat Dakin in the first round, and in round two, a 5.06/276.20 beat Johns' 5.13/274. In the semifinals, a 5.01/280.72 beat a tire-smoking Amato. In the final, he ran Darrell Gwynn and he overpowered the track to a shut off 17.11/48.44 while Darrell took the win with a 5.04/280. |
