Notes: The car ran 9.96/135.95 at the '70 Gatornationals in Gainesville and ran a best of 10.01 at the Summernationals in York, PA, winning the event. | In '70, every manufacturer had a strong standout driver. Chevy had Bill Jenkins, Ford had Don Nicholson, Plymouth had Ronnie Sox, and Dodge's man was Dick Landy. Dick started his Pro Stock season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 10.11/138.46. In the first round, his 10.19 beat Dick Loehr's Maverick at 10.27. A 10.21/135.95 in round two beat Bill Bagshaw, but he fouled in the semifinals against Bill Jenkins. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 9.96 qualified #4, and he stopped Rich Mirarcki’s Camaro in the first round, with a 10.30. He had a close race in round two where he and Arlen Vanke ran 10.20, but Landy won. Unfortunately, for the second race in a row, he lost to Jenkins in the semifinals. On February 22, he was at Irwindale for a Pro Stock event. He set Low ET of the meet at 10.05 in qualifying #1. The field was short, so he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 10.19/135.73. He had another easy run in round two when Darrell Droke fouled against him. Dick's first real race was in the semifinals, where he ran 10.17/135.33 to beat Bagshaw's 10.28/135. This put Landy into the final against Don Nicholson. "Dyno" had been laying down some good times, and it must have gotten Dick a little nervous as he fouled away a 10.24/135.50 while Don picked up the win with a 10.29/135. Landy got his first win in Pro Stock on March 8 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. There he set Low ET and Top Speed at 10.30/136.15. In the final, his 10.34/135.95 stopped Bob Lambeck's 10.46/135. A week later (March 15), he picked up another win. This one came at Sears Point for the San Francisco National Open. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field, and once again, the field was short, so he got the "odd-lot" single and ran 10.64/126.58. He only needed a 10.38 to advance in the semifinals when Ed Terry got out of shape and shut off. In the final, he faced Bob Jenkins' Dart. Dick set Low ET in the final with a 10.18 at 133.53 to win over Bob's 10.64/128. He then won the Seattle National Open setting Low ET at 10.11 and beating Lambeck in the final. His next victory came over an eight-car field at OCIR on April 4. A first-round 10.03/136.36 beat Jack Bayer's Camaro, and in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 10.00 at 137.19 over Bob Jenkins. He had it easy in the final, where he faced Bob Spears driving Jim Rangers' Maverick. Bob had his steering wheel come off in his hands, so Dick soloed for the win with a slow 10.64 at a fast 137.40 (Top Speed). He was out of the limelight for a while before getting his next win at the Colorado Pro Stock Championships at Continental Divide on May 17. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 10.77/127.44 in the high altitude that stopped Bagshaw for the money. He looked like he was on his way to another victory at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. His qualifying 10.13 held for Low ET, and he worked his way to the finals for a showdown with Ronnie Sox. Both had run 10.25 in their semifinal wins, so it was going to be close. Sure enough, the two had a good race, with Sox's 10.23/136 nipping Landy's quicker 10.21/135 runner-up effort. At Dallas, a week later for the NHRA Springnationals, he ran 10.13 to qualify #5 in the 32-car show. A first Round 10.19 advanced, but he lost in round two. On July 1, Capitol put on an eight-car show. Landy ran 10.15/135.95 in the first round, to beat Bernard Butler, driving Malcolm Durham's Camaro. In the semifinals, he sped up to a 9.94/139.10, but it wasn't enough to beat eventual winner Dyno’s 9.86/139. The highlight of Landy's '70 season had to be his win at the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #3 with a 10.10/136.36. In round one, his 10.08/136.57 beat Wally Booth's Camaro at 10.18/137. Another 10.08 at 136.77 in round two advanced when John Hagen fouled, and he picked up to a 10.01/137.82 in the semifinals to beat Dick Oldfield's 10.08/133 in the "Motown Missile.” This put him into the final against Herb McCandless driving a Sox & Martin prepared Duster. Herb had run a best of 10.06, so the final was close. McCandless must have thought so too, as he pushed the 'tree too hard and fouled, handing the win to Landy, who eased out to a 10.38/130.43 for the win. It was Landy's final NHRA victory and his only in Pro Stock competition. At the PHR Championships, Landy qualified #3 with a 10.06. After an easy first-round, he beat Ed Miller's 10.22/132 in round two with a 10.20/135.13. But in the semifinals, he fouled away a 10.14 against Oldfield's 10.07. Oldfield was pushing hard to be the strongest Dodge to displace Landy of that honor. Later in the month, Dick won the fourth NHRA Division 7 race held at Bonneville. Darrell Droke fouled against him in the final. At the NHRA US Nationals, the strongest Dodge in qualifying was Oldfield's. Dick had no trouble qualifying for the 32-car field, but his 10.04/136.15 in the first round, lost to Melvin Yow's 10.16/134. While I'm sure that loss hurt, he took some relief by winning the NHRA Division 7 final held at OCIR on Sept. 19. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 9.95. He then ran 9.95 and 9.97 to advance to the final. There he only needed a 10.26 to beat Rusty McGrath's Camaro. |

Notes: Also ran a legal 9.40 and 9.56 at PRA Tulsa, 9.60 at Minnesota, 9.741 at NHRA Pomona CA 2/72. On April 16, Landy was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he broke his driveshaft in his first-round race against Ed Schartman. Early in May, he was at Capitol Raceway for the second USRT race. All the cars were NHRA legal, but rosin was allowed to be laid down. Landy's 9.46 qualified #3. The top four qualifiers squared off for the first-place money. Dick's 9.47/145.20 defeated Schartman's off pace,10.29/109, and moved him into the final to face Bill Jenkins. The two had a close race, but Jenkins' 9.47/145 took the win over Dick's 9.48/144.96. Landy qualified #4 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Irv Beringhaus fouled against him in the opening round, and his 9.80/141.50 advanced. In round two, his 9.70-beat Carmen Rotonda's 9.76. But he got beat off the line in the semifinal, where his 9.79 lost to Don Grotheer's 9.80. There was a highly publicized match race between Bill Jenkins and Butch Leal run at OCIR on November 15. The track held an NHRA "legal" race that had over 30 cars attend along with the match race. Landy won the race running times of 9.31, 9.32, and 9.39 twice. Not sure if OCIR management was on the ball making sure the cars were 100% legal, or if Chrysler was really not as bad off with the NHRA rules as they would have led you to believe. |

Notes: Also ran 9.04 at Rockingham 1973 and 9.07/148.51 at Sacramento. Landy won the final OCIR All-Pro race of '73, stopping Butch Leal in the final with track records of 9.17/149.00. Set 9.07 AHRA national record at Fremont and won the AHRA World Championship. The car had to be rebuilt due to a towing accident that occurred on the way to Columbus. | Dick lasted until round two at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.34/148.51, and he beat Joe Satmary's 9.79/140 in the first round, with a 9.39/145.39. He lost to Ronnie Sox in the next round. He was at OCIR for its third All-Pro event. Landy qualified #1 with a 9.32 and picked up to a 9.27 (Low ET) at 146 while beating Sonny Bryant's Camaro in the semifinals. He also got Top Speed at 147.29, but in the final, he had problems and slowed to 10.35/101, which lost to Butch Leal's 9.44/146. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified with a 9.48/148.02 and a 9.70/145 advanced past round one when Jim Baker fouled. Dick got a single in round two when Mike Fons failed to show. He lost to eventual winner Don Nicholson in round three (32-car field) when his 9.60/145.86 came up second best to "Dyno Don's" 9.45/145 in his Pinto. As mentioned, he set both ends of the track record at OCIR at the final All-Pro race. Landy prevented Leal from making a clean sweep of the series. In March, he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Landy qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.16/150.25. He soloed with a 9.15/148.97 in the first round, when Monty Mantovan's Camaro broke. A 9.10/150.25 in round two beat Bob Lambeck, while a 9.07 (Low ET) at 149.75 took out Ken Van Cleave's Duster in the semifinals. Dick scored the win in the final by running 9.12/150.75 to drop Huff's 9.32/147. In April, he was at Tulsa for AHRA's Grand American race. He qualified #1 with a 9.25, but he failed to reach the finals. A few days later, he was at Sacramento for the California State Championships. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a 9.07/149.76. He went on to win the event with a 9.17/148.52 in the final that stopped Bill Bagshaw's 9.37/146. He had another good showing at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Landy qualified #2 with a 9.04/152.28 (Top Speed) behind Don Carlton's record-breaking 8.98. These two would work their way through the field to meet in the final. Dick started his march by running 9.11/148.76 to beat Don Grotheer's 9.34/146. He then beat John Brumley in round two before facing Sox in the semifinals. These two had a good race, with Dick's 9.08/149.25 coming out on top over Ronnie's close 9.11/148. In the final, Carlton ran another 8.98/150 to outrun Landy's 9.09/149.25. |

Notes: Landy was at Tucson Dragway in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.74/153.58, but an off-pace 9.23 lost to Gordie Rivera in the opening round. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 8.99 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he lost to Dave Kanners in the first round. Winner at Sacramento Raceway 2/76. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. An 8.85 qualified #2 behind Larry Huff's 8.82. He was upset in the first round, by Tom Chelbana. On May 16, Landy was at El Paso Dragway for the NHRA Division 4 race. He beat Paul Peyton's 10.10 in the first round, with a 9.49/136.04, and in the semifinals, his 9.48/142.18 beat Kelly Chadwick. He faced Lee Shepherd in the final, and Shepherd's 9.33/143 got the victory over Landy's 9.48/128.26 runner-up effort. The car was destroyed at OCIR during the PDA Championships on July 31. He had set Low ET while qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.87/154.63. He made an easy solo in round one, when Sonny Bryant's Camaro broke. In the semifinals, he ran 8.86/150.25 to beat Kevin Rotty's 8.96/153. But then all hell broke loose. A tire blew, and the car took a hard left into his guardrail. It then crossed the track and smacked the guardrail on the opposite side of the track. The car was a mess, but he was ok. Ran 8.79/155.79 at Fremont Raceway WCS 3/76. Ran 9.04/150.25 track record at Tucson 5/17/76. |

Notes: Lane was at Beeline in January for the Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #14, and in the first round, his 6.74/217.91 lost to Steve Harris' 6.60/215. Chris had his best-ever outing at the OCIR Fox Hunt race early in '76. Twenty-seven cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Lane's 6.49 qualified #5. He beat Tom McEwen, Jim Liberman, and John Lombardo to reach the final against Don Prudhomme. He ran a career-best 6.35/226.70 during eliminations. Although he failed to beat the "Snake" (few did) in the final, he made a good account of himself with his runner-up finish. Early in May, he was back at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #7 and lost to McEwen in the first round. He was at Bonneville Raceway for the final NHRA Division 7 race in August. He had set Low ET at 6.91 and was up against Frank O'Brien in the final. The "Phoenix" broke, and Frank soloed for the title. |
