Notes: All fiberglass 109" Larson-built rectangular tube chassis. Larson ran this car on gas, alky, and fuel. These are fuel stats. He ran the car from 1966/68, then debuted his Camaro. Sold this car to Jim Maybeck, who ran it as the "Screaming Eagle" A/XS in 1968. Then Maybeck turned it over to Al Hanna late in 1968. The best times I've found for this car in 1966 on fuel are 9.2/150.00 at Englishtown, per 11/04/66 Drag Times. A 4/3/70 National Dragster Pro-File says the car went 8.50s at 167 in 1966, though they were notorious for having the years wrong. - JB (Note: Picture shows his rebodied '67 car, not the '66 as noted above. He ran each in successive years. - RT) |

Notes: Injected gas here. In 1966, also ran car on alky and on fuel. Fiberglass body-109" rectangular tube frame. Feature story reported car ran a 4-speed, but was to convert to Turbohydro. Larson ran this car into 1968, sold it to Jim Maybeck, who ran it as the "Patriot" A/FC in 1968. Maybeck sold it to Al Hanna, who ran the car late in 1968. - DD |

Notes: Bruce was at York US 30 in April to make some test runs with his Chevelle. He made three passes, a 9.10/155.44, 9.73/141.73, and 8.92/156.25. On April 23, he was at Delmar US 13 for a best of three match race against Tom Smith. Larson won all three races, running a career-best (to this point) 8.86/159.85. Those times were bettered on April 29 at York, Pa. He was there for a best of three against Dave Strickler. In their first race, Larson's 8.76/155.44 beat Dave's 8.91/152. Strickler evened things up in the second race when he drove his Corvette to an 8.89/157 to beat the "USA-1's" 8.94/148.76. Bruce ran a new personal best in the final race to win the match with his 8.66/160.42 coming out on top over Strickler's 8.78/159. |

Notes: Bruce Larson was one of the best Chevrolet funny car racers of all time. The "USA-1" 1967 Camaro was the second funny campaigned by Larson. It was one of the best in the northeast. The car featured a Logghe Stage II chassis and a 427 Chevrolet engine backed by an automatic transmission. The Camaro held the NHRA National record at 7.41 seconds in 1968 when he amazed everyone at SSDI Nats with the Low ET. That run hurt the motor and Bruce had to put in backup motor for the rest of the weekend (still went rounds). The "USA-1" 67 Camaro raced until 1969. Larson now makes exhibition runs with the restored car. (Photos provided by Mike Ditty. Info provided by James Ibusuki and draglist.com) | Capitol Raceway held its Mr. Chevrolet race on August 13 and it was fitting that Larson took the crown. He beat Joe Black in round one, with a 7.83/178.21 while in round two his 7.80/184.94 beat Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette. In the semifinals, he beat Mel Perry with a 7.90/182.18 to move into the final against Dick Bourgeois. Larson took the victory with a final round 7.90/189. Won NE Dragway Funny Car Nats in 68 at 7.71/189.87. Cecil held a best of three match race between Larson and Jim Liberman on October 6. Bruce won the first race with a quick-leaving 7.64/188.28 over JJ's 7.59/187." Jungle Jim's" 7.78/187 won the second race when Larson fouled away an 8.03/183.66. In the deciding race, both ran well, but Liberman's 7.81/183 won the match over Larson's close 7.82/186.72. Bruce set both ends of Maple Grove track record with a 7.62/186.72 in October. On October 13 he faced off against Clare Sanders driving Liberman's #2 car in a best of three match race at Englishtown. He lost the match when he fouled in the first two races although he had run the best time of the two at 7.78. The two came out for one more run and Bruce beat Sanders' 7.88 with a 7.65. The track record was 7.64 at the time. The two had a rematch on November 3 at New England. This time Larson won all three races with times of 8.23/155.97,a track record 7.59 at 184.42 and 7.98/171.42. Sanders was not running well, as his best was 8.23/177. He was at Irwindale on November 9 for the Mopar vs Chevy Funny Car Race. A tire-smoking 8.28/180.36 lost to Charlie Allen in the first round, while an 8.34 in round two lost to Steve Bovan's 8.33 in Nelson Carter's Charger in round two. Bruce got his lone win in round three where he beat Larry Reyes. He lost three straight against Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's "Cuda at Irwindale on November 28. Bruce smoked the tires in the first and third rounds while his best run, a 7.93/182.92 in the second race, lost to Siroonian's 7.88/186. At the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, Bruce broke a pinion shaft in the first round, against Leonard Hughes. In his second race, something in the drivetrain broke and his 8.39/176.81 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.69/193. He was unable to repair for his third race and Mike Burkhart replaced him. |

Notes: Strongest Chevy-powered Funny of '69. Ran a 7.60/191.88 at Englishtown in March. Set a 187.50 Maple Grove track record. On April 13, Larson faced Frank Oglesby for a match race at Cecil County. Bruce's 7.79/191.48 won the first race of the match when Frank's Cougar broke. Bruce made a second-round single to win the match when the Cougar couldn't be repaired in time. Another match race was run in April at US 131, Martin, Mich., against Ed Schartman. A first-round 8.29/187.88 beat Ed's 8.42/172.41. Larson had transmission problems in the second round, and Ed's 8.37/173.41 won. In the third round, Larson won to take the match. In May, he raced at Capitol's Mr. Chevrolet Invitational but fouled against Mel Perry in the first round. On May 24, he raced Schartman's second car driven by Arnie Behling at Suffolk for a match race. Larson beat Arnie two straight with runs of 7.80/154.10 and 7.56/180.00 to win the match. He was at Cecil County the next day for their Funny Car Manufacturers Meet. Bruce set a track record 7.46 at 193 (Top Speed), but he didn't make it past the first round as he fouled against Jim Liberman. Bruce cracked off the 7.33 at Budds Creek, Maryland, on May 30. It was during a six-car show that he set the track record. He won his first-round race with a 7.95/187.88 over Schartman's 8.11/178. In the semifinals, he ran the 7.33/189.46 to beat Liberman's 7.92/185. This put him into the final against Lew Arrington in the "Brutus." A final round 7.84/187.88 won when Lew got crossed up and shut off to 9.16/157. In June, he returned to Maple Grove for another match race with Schartman. This time, he beat Ed three straight with a best of 7.69/187.88 for the track speed record. On June 8, he ran at the New England Funny Car Championships, where a first-round single (7.98) advanced when Pete Gates lost fire on the line. In the second round, Liberman's 7.61/190 beat his off-pace 8.22/189. Another match race against Schartman was run at York US 30 on June 21. A big holeshot by Ed in the first race gave the Cougar a 7.86/182 win over Larson's quicker 7.62. Bruce lost fire on the line, so Ed raced the backup car of Al Graeber and won, giving him the match race win, but Larson wanted a final attempt at a win, so they lined up for a final race. Sure enough, Larson got out of shape, and Ed's 7.95/180 gave him three straight victories. Bruce did much better the following week on June 28 at Budds Creek, Maryland, where he beat Charlie Allen two straight. At Capitol's King of King's Funny Car race on July 16, Roy Gay's 8.03/179.28 beat his out-of-shape 8.11/180.72 in the first round. At the Cars Magazine Funny Car Nationals on July 20, a first-round 7.61/189.46 beat Ron Rivero (7.72/190.66), but in the second frame, Arrington's 7.50/192 beat Bruce's 7.77/171.16. A big win came at Sunset Dragway's fifth annual Funny Car Championships, where he set a 5.09 eighth-mile track record before beating Schartman in the final of the ten-car field. A match race against Jim Liberman was run on August 2 at York US 30, where Jim beat him two straight with two 7.56s at 191. Bruce's best was a 7.65/189. At the US Nationals, he was the top qualified Chevy with a 7.43/195.22 (qualifying sixth). He had the Chevy fans screaming when his first-round 7.43/194.38 advanced when Schartman fouled. He upset Don Schumacher, who lost a transmission in the second round with a 7.35. The fans were on their feet for the semifinal race between him and Danny Ongais. But Larson fouled away a 7.48; Ongais' 7.27 would've been hard to beat anyway. On September 21 at Epping for the New England Funny Car Championships, Paul Stefansky's 7.70/175 beat him in round two when Bruce lost third gear. On October 26, he won at Connecticut over an eight-car field, setting a 7.42 track record. He ran 7.42/194.38 and 7.50/196.50 before beating the Super' Cuda in the final with a 7.48/196.50. - Ron Howard | Ted Pappacena photo of the modern recreation of the car. |

Notes: Larson debuted his '70 Camaro on March 15 at York US 30 at a match race against Ken Safford in the Mr. Norm Charger. In his first race, he ran 177.12 that lost to Ken's 7.50. An improved 8.05/187.11 in the second race was still unable to beat the seasoned Charger's 7.44/189. And in the last race, the Camaro broke. York US 30 held an 8-car show on April 5. The finalists were based on the two rounds of competition, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Larson's 7.71/187.50 beat Arnie Beswick's 8.24/173 in the first round, and in round two, he fouled away a 7.71/185.95 opposite Charlie Allen. He still made the final due to his ETs, and there he laid down a 7.56 (Low ET) at 189.07 to beat Malcolm Durham's 7.64/191.89. A week later (April 12), he was at Columbus for a four-car show. In his first race, his 7.76/190.26 beat Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster.” The second race had him up against Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Minick's 7.45/197 beat Larson's 7.71/190.26. In his final race, he faced Johnny Wright in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. Bruce's 7.59/193.12 beat Wright's off-pace 8.00/165. On April 26, he ran a match race at Englishtown against Ron Rivero. Both cars ran 7.79 in the first race, with Ron's slower speed of 185, getting the win over Larson's slightly faster 186.33. Unfortunately, Larson could not run due to his engine quitting after the one race, and Rivero took the match. Bruce ran the Super Stock Nationals but lost early both days. He went up to Cayuga Dragway in Canada for an eight-car show in May and finished runner-up. He had beaten Clare Sanders' 7.81/188 in the Super Camaro with a 7.67/191.48 and a semifinal 7.71/191.48 advanced when Don Schumacher broke on the line. In the final, he ran a good 7.59/194.88 but lost to Phil Castronovo's Low ET and Top Speed run of 7.52/196.92. Phil got him again at Connecticut for a 16-car show on May 31. This time, the two met in the first round, with the same results. Castronovo's 7.56/175 beat Bruce's off pace 8.45/184.42. On June 7, Larson was on his way to the final after setting Low ET with a 7.14 at the New England Spring Funny Car meet. Unfortunately, after a strong burnout, his transmission let go, and this reinstated Rowe with the break rule in effect. Maple Grove hosted a match race between Larson and Tommy Grove on June 27. Larson's 7.75/173.41 won the first race when Grove blew a head gasket. He then won the second race and the match when he beat the backup Corvair of Ken Poffenberger with a 7.65/181.80. Grove got his car fixed in time for the third race and blasted a 7.39/190 to beat Larson's 7.49/190.26. On July 5, Connecticut held a 16-car show. In the first round, Paula Murphy's 8.10/189 lost to Larson's 7.54/192.71. He had to race her again in the second round when she got back in on the break rule. This time a 7.45/189.47 beat Paula's 7.79/192. In the semifinal, a 7.81/186.72 lost to Paul Stefansky's 7.69/195. National Trail hosted a match race between Larson and Rowe. A holeshot-aided 7.67/187.88 beat Rowe's quicker 7.55/202 in the first race. In the second race, Rowe came back with a 7.47/192 to beat Bruce's 7.54/195.22. In the deciding match, Larson's 7.54/195.22 beat Rowe's better 7.53/195. He competed at the NHRA Summernationals on July 19. A 7.67/191.89 qualified #5. He won his first-round with a 7.81/192.71 over Poffenberger's 8.28/186. In the second round, his 7.74/193.13 was far behind Gene Snow's 7.32/207. The Chevy-powered cars were feeling the pinch as it was getting harder and harder to run against the Mopars, especially once they started stroking the Hemis. Bruce was holding out exceptionally well, but even his "Rat" motors were being hard-pressed. Budds Creek held an Funny Car show, and Larson managed to make it into the final. He had beaten Pee Wee Wallace with a 7.96/190 and an 8.05 beat Al Graeber in the second round. He lost to Larry Reyes' 7.35/196 in the semifinal but got back in on the break rule to face Reyes again in the final. Reyes took the win. Another runner-up finish came on July 25 at the 1/8 mile Sunset drag strip's Funny Car Nationals. Larson ran 5.04, 5.08, and a semifinal 5.05 over Stefansky's 5.49. In the final, he ran his best ET, a 5.01, but lost to Kelly Chadwick's 4.97 Low ET of the meet. Larson was back in New England on August 9 for a match race against Lew Arrington. Both cars were off in their first race, with Lew's 8.21/191 beating Bruce's 8.85/166. Lew won the match when he beat Larson in the second race with a 7.57/188 over the Camaro's 8.1/183. Maple Grove held a 16-car show in August, and once again, Bruce was runner-up, this time to Leroy Goldstein in the Ramchargers Challenger. Larson really made the Chevy fans stand up and cheer at the NHRA Nationals. He was the only non-Mopar-powered qualifier with a 7.24 that held on for the "bump spot." He beat Tom McEwen's 7.21 in the first round, with a career-best 7.17/205. He improved his all-time best in the second round to a 7.161/205.94 while beating Bobby Wood's 7.22. All good things have to come to an end when in the semifinals, he fouled against Goldstein. Larson was at Englishtown for its Fallnationals. It was an eight-car show, and he beat Pete Hill in the first round, with a 7.69. A better 7.46 in the semifinals lost to Jim Liberman's 7.31. On September 20, he was at Epping for the fourth annual New England Funny Car Championships. It was a 32-car show, and Larson beat Kosty Ivanof in the first round, with a 7.66/202. In the second round, a 7.36/199.50 beat Paul Stefansky's Mustang, but in round three, he lost to Larry Reyes in the "Super Duster." |

Notes: Bruce faced off against Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" in a best of three match race early in the year. Rowe won the first race with a 7.39/198 over Larson's 7.57/191.08. Bruce evened up the score in the second race with a 7.36/202.70 (speed tied the track record) to beat Bobby's 7.51/191. Rowe won the match in the last race with a 7.17 track record at 200 to beat the Camaro's 7.50/184.04. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships on April 18, but he fouled in the second round against Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." A week later (April 25), he was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race. A first-round 7.39/194.80 beat Della Woods, but he shut off on the line against Ronnie Umbach in the semifinals. In July, Bruce was at Connecticut for a best of three match race against Jimmy King. Larson lost the first race when he shut down with problems, and in the second race, his 7.25/185.95 lost to Jimmy's 7.19/208. He was at Budds Creek for a sixteen-car show later in July. He failed to make the final, but in the second round, he beat Arne Swensen, who blew a motor, and his car went into a fireball. After Arne stopped his Mustang, Bruce helped to extract Swensen out of his burning car. Bruce was at Suffolk for a four-car show on July 25. In his first race, his 7.21/197.80 beat Frank Huff's 7.53/183 in the "Super Vega.” These two would meet again in their second race, and once again, Larson came out on top; this time, he improved to 7.12/197.36 over Huff's close 7.13/208. Larson then ran "Jungle Jim" Liberman in his third race, and despite running his best that day with a 7.11 at 187.50, he lost to Liberman's 6.93/209. He ran a best-of-three-match race against Frank Federici on August 15 at Numidia Dragway. Bruce won all three races, turning a best of 7.19/204.08. The speed was a new track record. On August 22, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. An opening round 7.32/194.80 lost to Tom Sneden's 7.21/200 in the "Bob Banning" Challenger. At the end of August, he was at Bristol for the IHRA All-American Championships. He lost to Bobby Rowe in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. Larson was true to Chevy motors in his Funny Cars for as long as he could. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, Larson failed to qualify with a 6.95 best. Rockingham was his next stop for the IHRA US Open. In the first round, he soloed when the "Hawaiian" broke, but he fell to fellow Chevy campaigner Kelly Chadwick in round two. He finally pulled the plug, dropped the Chevy motor, and installed a 426 Hemi by October. |

Notes: After burning his fuel funny car to the ground at Budds Creek in 1973, Bruce decided to go Pro Stock racing. He leased this Camaro from Bill Jenkins and ordered a Vega from SRD. He ran the venerable 70 Camaro through the end of 1973, then turned it back over to Jenkins. |

Notes: SRD delivered this car to Bruce at the end of 1972. Bruce had been running Bill Jenkins' '70 Camaro as a lease. Larson debuted his new Vega at the NHRA Springnationals in June. New car bugs kept him from qualifying for the show. It took a while, but by the end of August, Bruce really had his Vega flying. At the NHRA Pro Stock Circuit race at Englishtown, he only qualified #5 for the eight-car show, but he beat Frank Iaconio in the opening round, and a semifinal 9.34/145.16 beat Al Joniec's Pinto at 9.43/145. He faced Scott Shafiroff in an all-Vega final, and his 9.24/146.34 got him the victory over Scott's 9.41/145. At the NHRA US Nationals, his 9.364/144.46 qualified way down in the #27 spot. His first-round 9.35 lost to Bob Riffle's 9.22. The following week (September 9), he was at the NED Fallnationals at Englishtown. Once again, the final came down to the two Vegas of Shafiroff and Larson. And once again, Bruce outran Scott, this time a 9.19/148.27 (Top Speed) got the win over a 9.21/147. Shortly after that (September 15), he was at Atco for the NHRA Division 1 final. In the opening round of eliminations, his 9.41/147.78 beat Charlie Castaldo's 9.46/144. Bruce also ran 9.210 at Suffolk. |

Notes: Larson was at Englishtown in August for an eight-car unlimited Pro Stock race. In the first round, both he and Wayne Gapp ran 8.92 (Larson at 151.51), but the "win" light came on in the Ford's lane. He came back out for a couple of consolation races, and in the first of those, his 9.00/150.25 beat a fouling Tom Smallwood, and on the second, his 8.93/151.26 lost to Mike Fons' 8.67/157. 9.17 at Cecil County Co. 9.04/148.26 at NY National at 6.75#, CID. Where was this 8.84/148 run? A match race at light weight? Bruce has confirmed that he had a 'big' small block for the Vega that he used for match racing. |

Notes: Former Jungle Jim car. Bruce Larson debuted his new Monza at Budds Creek in April. He ran 7.59 in the first round, over Carl Ruth, but he lost to eventual winner Gene Altizer in the semifinals. Larson was at Budds Creek for a twin bill Funny Car show. Both fuel and alcohol classes featured eight-car fields. Bruce ran 7.25/188 in the first round, over Ray Sherman, but in the semifinals his 7.27 lost to Les Cassidy's 7.24. Shortly after this, he was at ESTA Drag Strip for another eight-car show. Once again, he beat Sherman in the opening round, this time with a 7.75/176, but in the semifinals, he developed transmission problems and slowed to 8.31/116.42 in a loss to Carl Ruth's 7.38/186. |

Notes: After playing around with alcohol for a while, Larson returned to the "wild side" and poured nitro back into the tank. He was at the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown, where he qualified for the eight-car show, but in the first round, both he and Pee Wee Wallace smoked the tires, and Bruce's 7.73/214.79 finished second best to Wallace's 7.30/207. The same thing happened at the next Division 1 race held at Cayuga. Both he and his first-round opponent, George Johnson, smoked the tires, and once again, Larson finished second. This time his better 7.37/208.33 lost to Johnson's quick-leaving 7.44/208. He did set Top Speed there, though, with his 218.97 from qualifying. Larson was at Maple Grove in June for yet another Division 1 race, where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. At the NHRA Summernationals, he was the second alternate with a 6.75 best. On July 24, he was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. It was a twelve-car show, and in round one, his 6.88/204.08 beat Tommy Grove's 6.90/221. But in the next round, he lost to Tom McEwen. Shortly after that, he was at Lebanon Valley's Summer Funny Car Championships. All eight cars ran three rounds, and in Bruce's first race, his 7.10/200.89 lost to Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car. He beat a crossed-up Pete Hill in his second race with a 6.76/205.01, and he ran his best time (6.73/214.28) in a third-round solo. Later in August, he was at Empire Dragway for the Gold Cup Championships race. An opening round 6.93/203.61 lost to the race's eventual winner, Kosty Ivanof's 6.74/191. Bruce was at the final NHRA Division 1 race held at Atco in September, but a shutoff,10.27 in the first round, lost to Ls Cassidy's 7.37. A week later (Sept 19), he was at Epping, New England, for its Funny Car Nationals. In the first round, his late 6.83/205 lost to George Johnson's 6.96/215. |
