Notes: Larson competed at the Spring All-Pro Funny Car Championships held at Maple Grove in April. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, of eliminations, his 6.84/201.34 beat Bob Beaulieu's 6.83/192. In the semifinals, his 6.63/217.91 lost to the eventual winner Gary Burgin's 6.48/201. Suffolk held an eight-car show shortly after that where Bruce competed, but he lost early in eliminations. On April 29, he was at York US 30 for its eighth annual Funny Car Nationals. In round one, Bruce's 7.61 beat Pete Hill's 7.74. But in round two, he lost to Dodger Glenn, who was driving the "Frantic Ford." Luckily for Larson, Roy Harris had won his second-round race but had hurt some parts and could not return for his semifinal race. The break rule was in effect, and since Larson was the low Et loser from round two, he was brought back into the field for the semifinal. Once again, he had to race the "Frantic Ford," and this time, he won with a 7.00. He faced Dick Rosberg in the final, and Bruce set Low ET with a 6.30 to get the victory. Bruce was at Englishtown on May 7 for the NHRA Division 1 opener. He ran well, stopping Harris' 6.63/203 in the first round, with a 6.50/220.04 before falling to the eventual winner Jake Crimmins' 6.47/213 with a 6.55/215.31 in the semifinals. He won the Factory Funny Car Showdown at Atco. Times there were not that great. A 7.18/216.34 beat a blower-popping Les Cassidy in the first round. Glenn got sideways in the semifinal, and Larson advanced with a 7.21/171.75. The final didn't look good for Larson as he faced Burgin, who had set Low ET at 6.44. But both drivers smoked the tires in the final, and Larson's 7.56/199.11 got the win over Gary's 7.84/214. He was at Englishtown on June 21 for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. Larson's late 6.37/222.77 lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.42/193 in his first race, and in his second race, a quicker 6.56 lost to Al Hanna's 6.60. Bruce won the NED Gold Cup Championships at Empire Dragway in New York in July. A final round 6.68/215.31 beat Tom Prock. In August, he was at the New England Championships, where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Pete Williams in the "Chi-Town Hustler."Atco held its Funny Car Championships shortly after on a Wednesday. It was an eight-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, Bruce's 6.88/206.42 beat Roy Harris'quicker 6.78/208 in the "Brutus" Mustang. In the semifinals, Larson's 6.57/205.01 lost to Jim Adolph's 6.56/191. He then went to New England for the NHRA Division 1 final. But in round one, his 6.59/218.44 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.32/224. |

Notes: Larson was at Maple Grove in May for the Dutch Classic. He ran well, reaching the final against Gary Burgin. There, his 6.42/219.51 lost to Gary's 6.33/231. Bruce attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but his 6.51 (unknown speed) fell short of the 6.33 "bump." In October, Larson drove this car to a career-best of 6.30 at Englishtown for the Fall Funny Car meet. A semifinal 6.50/209.30 got him into the finals against Roy Harris. A crossed-up 10.03/84.82 finished runner-up to Harris' 6.33/223. Bruce Larson still has this car, original, unrestored, and in excellent condition, looking ready to race - most recently seen at NHRA Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green. |

Notes: Bruce was at the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 4. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.53/230.76. Larson took it easy on a solo run in the first round, when Frank Oglesby broke. In the semifinals, his 6.71/198.67 beat low qualifier Rick Johnson, putting him in the final against John Speelman. Bruce had problems in the final and shut off to 7.47/136.57 to log a runner-up finish to Speelman's 6.43/229. Later in May, he was at Maple Grove for the Jungle Jim Memorial race. It was a six car show and all cars made two passes with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Larson had problems getting hooked up here as he smoked the tires to a 7.06/200.89 that lost to Roy Harris' Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.13/233 in his first race. In his second, he again broke the tires loose and his 7.17/219.51 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.26/232. We needless to say, he failed to reach the final. |

Notes: Bruce faced Al Segrini in a best of three match race at New England in June. It wasn't a good match for Larson as he lost three straight. He ran 6.48/193.54, 6.24/211.76, and 6.40/223.32 compared to Segrini's best of 6.10/231. |

Notes: The story I got is: Bruce didn't make the qualified field for the race, came out Sunday for an exhibition run, did a quarter-mile burnout - actually to the finish line - came back and ran his first 5-second run. - Curt Swartz | Not only did Larson run his first 5-second pass of the weekend for the Nitro coupes, but he would have been the pole-sitter by a bunch, according to the screaming announcer over the PA system. Nobody caught the numbers after a loud roar went up after Bruce hit the chutes. Dale Pulde and Don Prudhomme held the top 2 spots at 5.94 and 5.95 respectively. Pulde later set Low ET at 5.86 in a semifinal win over John Force. So, it's anybody's guess what Bruce actually ran that morning. I searched for years to find that time, but it was not to be. We needless to say, the crowd went nuts. - Rick Howard | Just to add one more take to this story, Bruce did fail to qualify for the eight-car field at ADRA's first race, the Grandnationals, at Dragway 42. But the following day, he made a 6.03 pass that was a career-best (to this point). |

Notes: ND reported that Bruce debuted his "all-trick 1985 USA-1 Corvette at the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza with a best of 6.50, 207.61 in two losing efforts." It said, "Larson built the car himself, which should be his best entry yet. The car launches hard. Bruce lost the new Fugure Force of Chuck Etchells with new driver Lester Cassidy at the wheel." Atco held its May Madness race, and Bruce was there in his new Corvette. It was a four-car show, and Larson won both his races with a 6.10/230.75 over Chuck Etchells and 6.37/226.13 over Dominic Santucci. Bruce was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals in June. He ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.90/238.72 in qualifying. In the first round, he ran a tire-shaking 6.46/223.32 that lost to Tim Grose's 5.82/241. On August 10, he raced at the Maple Grove Funny Car Nationals. Bruce made it into the finals where his 5.84/243.90 finished runner-up to Dale Pulde's 5.76/240. We need to validate that Bruce built the car per the ND story. Leaving Pat Foster as the builder for now. Photo from 1985 IHRA World Nationals, Norwalk, Ohio. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Drag Racing List has 5.845/250.69 times from Maple Grove national event. | Larson attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.31/168.53 failed to make the field. In March he faced off with Dominic Santucci for a best of three match race at Englishtown. Larson won two straight running times of 6.28/230.76 and 6.17/238.09. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his best of 6.28/225.79 failed to qualify. He competed at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.22 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.00 before losing in the semifinals. Bruce got into the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 6.25/220.26 held the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Johnny West in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He qualified #13 with a 6.02/237.21 at the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Magazine Nationals and Larson was there, running a 6.03/233.76 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier (5.62) Kenny Bernstein. Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.00/144.69 that lost to Kenny's 5.75/254. In late June he followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. Only twelve cars showed for the sixteen-car show so qualifying wasn't a problem. Bruce ran a 6.12/240.12 to qualify #11. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off, losing to Billy Meyer's ailing 9.22/91. On July 2, Englishtown held its Funny Car Spectacular. Larson lost to West's 5.78/258 in the first round, with a 6.31/184.04, but he got back in on the "break rule." So in round two he ran Roy Harris, but Bruce had problems and shut off to a 9.10-86.04 that lost to Roy's 6.39/180. He was back at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals where he ran a 5.99/243.11 to qualify on the "bump." In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover. On August 3, he competed at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #8 with a 6.20 in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Scott Kalitta in the first round. The following week (August 9), he was at the US Funny Car Nationals where he ran a 6.19/236.22 to qualify #6 in the six car show. He lost early. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, his best of 6.07/237.59 was good for the sixth alternate spot. He also attempted to make the show at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but he had problems and failed to qualify with a 7.32/118.18 best. In the season long NHRA points chase he finished #19. |

Notes: Teamed with Joe Amato. Photo from Columbus 1987. Bruce had been running his Corvette for the early part of the season until he debuted his Beretta at the NHRA Springnationals in June. It did well during qualifying, running 5.74/249.93 for the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he lost to Jim Head in the first round. The following week, he took it to Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. A 6.16/166.66 qualified #5 in the eight-car field setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein. Larson improved to 5.85/232.55 in their race, but Kenny's 5.71/244 got the win. Bruce went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Qualifying was easy as only 15 cars showed. Still, Larson laid down a 5.88/244.83 to qualify #7. He had a close first-round race against Tom McEwen that saw his 5.93/247.72 lose to McEwen's 5.91/240. Closer to home, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.75/248.55 qualified #10, but a 5.87/251.81 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.64/251 in the "Candies and Hughes" car in round one. He followed the NHRA tour to Denver for the Mile High Nationals where he qualified #6 with a 5.85/244.56. But in the opening round, he smoked the tires and lost to Steve Hodkinson. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, a 5.75/251.18 qualified #12, but again he lost in round one. This time Don Prudhomme's 5.73/253 beat his off-pace 6.08/234.92. Bruce was one of eight-cars that had run well enough to qualify for the "Big Bud Shootout" held in conjunction with the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. But his first-round bad luck persisted when he smoked the tires and shut of to 6.95/135.29 in a loss to Billy Meyer's 5.71/259. For the US Nationals the next day, 21 cars attempted to qualify for the show. Larson qualified #9 with a 5.72. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bernstein where once again Bruce went into tire smoke, and he lost to eventual winner Bernstein. | 261.02 was at the 1987 NHRA Motorcraft Gatornationals Gainesville with the Corvette. He ran 256.33 at Phoenix for the NHRA Castrol GTX Fallnationals on 10/18/87. Just looking for the Fastest Speed recorded in 1987 for Bruce with this Beretta. - Rob McCabe |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1988. | Bruce stepped up his act in '88 and it showed when he won his first NHRA National event this year. He made the switch from Chevy bodies cars to Oldsmobile. His season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.54. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ed McCulloch. In that race, Ed smoked the tires while Larson motored into the second round where his 5.58 lost to John Force's 5.42. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.69. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. He did not race in the IHRA events this year so the next big event he attended was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta where he lasted until the second round where Oswald's 5.55 stopped his 5.62 from advancing. Oswald got him again at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, only this time it was in the first round. Bruce qualified #12 there with a 5.72. Larson got his first NHRA win at the Cajun Nationals at the end of May. He beat Tom Hoover and a fouling Force with a 5.60/254 in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he beat McCulloch and in the final, it was Kenny Bernstein he beat for his first victory. After that, it wasn't long before he was in another NHRA final; in fact it came at the very next race, the Springnationals at Columbus. Bruce qualified #4 with a 5.51. He took out Chuck Etchells in the first round, and a 5.50/268 beat John Martin in round two. In the semifinals, Mike Dunn smoked the tires against him and Bruce's 5.54/254 run moved him into the final to face Force. It was not much of a race in the final; when Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.69/50.65 while John ran 5.52/262 for the victory. Bruce followed the NHRA tour up north to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.65/263.00 and lasted until the second round when eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.50 beat his 5.59. Then came another final round appearance at the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.49/261.55 qualified #5, and he beat Frank Kramberger in the first round. A second round 5.59/260 beat Force's 5.65/251, and in the semifinals, a 5.57/260 beat Bernstein's 5.62/255. In the final, he ran Prudhomme who had been running steady 5.4's. Bruce tried hard, running a 5.63/260, but it finished second best to the "Snake's" 5.41/257. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals where he qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 5.55/254.95. R.C. Sherman fouled against him in the first round, and Bruce advanced with a 5.68/251.29. In the semifinals, he soloed with a 5.76/254.23 when Tim Grose broke and was unable to run. He found himself in another final, and while it wasn't a national event, I'm sure he still felt good. In the final, he faced low qualifier Bernstein. Kenny got the win while Larson got another runner-up finish. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals in Aug, everyone was running 5.3's in qualifying, except, it seemed, Larson. He qualified #8 with a 5.45/267.30. In the first round, he showed he could run with the big dogs by beating Bryan Raines with a 5.35. In the second round, a 5.52 beat a tire smoking Oswald. He was surprised by a quick-leaving Brad Tuttle in the semifinals and his 5.59 couldn't catch Brad's 5.62. |

Notes: Larson had his best season ever in '89. He and crew chief Maynard Yingst jelled, and he went on to win the NHRA Funny Car World Championship by winning six events in eleven final round showings. He started the year by qualifying #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.38/269.62. He improved to a 5.32/259.81 in the first round, to beat Don Prudhomme's 5.50/263. Another 5.32 at 256.41 beat John Martin in round two, while in the semifinals, Bruce eased to a 12.89/54.76 to advance when Jim White broke in the "Hawaiian." In the final, he grabbed his first victory of the year with a 5.63/231.24 over Kenny Bernstein. To show it was no fluke, they then went to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where a 5.30/275.06 qualified #5. He beat White in the first round, and in round two, he reset the NHRA ET record to 5.27 while beating a tire-smoking Prudhomme. (The "Snake" had set Low ET at 5.19 in qualifying but failed to back it up for a record). Mark Oswald smoked the tires in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals, and Larson was in his second final of the new year. Unfortunately, he blew a head gasket in the final, and his 5.58/207.32 finished runner-up to Scott Kalitta's 5.57/264. He was in another final at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.33/276.07 qualified #2, and in round one, he advanced with a 5.40 when Tom Hoover fouled. His 5.33/273 put Bernstein on the trailer in round two, while a great 5.31/275.48 took out Chuck Etchells in the semifinals. Things were looking good for another victory when he faced Ed McCulloch in the final. Ed had been having a hard time getting his Larry Minor-owned Cutlass down the track. The "Ace's" last two runs were 6.47 and 9.76 in the semis, so Larson was the favorite. Unfortunately, Bruce crossed the centerline on a 5.67 run in the final, and Ed's 19.70 got the victory. Still, three finals in three NHRA races was nothing to laugh at. They were tough. The fourth NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Larson qualified #1 with a 5.38/266.82. He beat Oswald in round one, but lost to Mike Dunn in the second round. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, they qualified well with a 5.35/268.69 for the #3 spot, but in round one, Larson smoked the tires and lost to Tony McCallum. The team continued their short dry spell at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bruce qualified #5 with a 5.55/268.73, but he only made it as far as round two, where his 5.50 lost to Prudhomme's 5.44. They rebounded from their slump at the NHRA Springnationals. There, Larson qualified #2 with a 5.30/271.32. He reset the NHRA ET record in the first round, with a 5.25 at 271.32 to beat Art Hendey. In round two, he set the track speed record with a 5.35/276.75 over a tire-smoking Johnny West, and in the semifinal, Etchells also smoked the tires against him, and his 5.33/270.27 moved him into the final against Hoover. In the final, Tom had problems and slowed to 6.79/135 while Bruce motored to his second win of the season with a 5.52/275.31. It was a dominant performance. The NHRA teams then headed to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Larson again qualified well, running 5.52/269.38 for the #3 spot. In the first round, he picked up to a 5.49/265.72 to beat White, but the Cutlass broke in round two against Prudhomme, giving the "Snake" a solo into the semifinals. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 5.39 qualified #6 for the show. He beat R.C. Sherman in round one, but his quicker 5.50 in round two lost to a quick-leaving McCulloch at 5.56. Maynard tuned the car to a 5.55/251.53 in Denver's thin air for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Bruce beat Kalitta in the first round, and White in the second with a 5.65/248. His 5.54/249 in the semifinals beat McCulloch and Bruce found himself in his fifth final round of the year. He made the best of it, running a 5.66/255.97 to beat Oswald's quicker 5.62/255. At the end of July, the NHRA tour was at Sonoma for the California Nationals. Larson qualified #6 at 5.42/276.07. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. Another win came at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.31/277.00. On his way to the final, he ran 5.31/271.98, 5.35/270.10, and 5.37/271.57 to beat Kalitta, Densham, and White in that order. In the final, he faced Bernstein, and once again, Larson used his reflexes to get the victory; his 5.40/271.08 beat Kenny's 5.37/273. 1989 World Champ. Photo from Columbus 1989. Great 5.247/274.72 at 1989 Chiefs was the quickest side-by-side pass (Mark Oswald, 5.232/281.60). Ran 5.282/276.92 at Indy 1989. |

Notes: After a great '89 season that saw them win the NHRA Funny Car Championship, Larson and crew chief Maynard Yingst put forth another strong effort in '90. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.37/273.97 qualified #4. Bruce improved to a 5.34/277.43 in the first round to beat Al Hofmann, and a further improving 5.31/271.16 in round two stopped Scott Kalitta's 5.44/250. But in the semifinals, an off-pace 5.54/267.06 lost to K.C. Spurlock's 5.39/276. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Larson qualified #5 with a 5.34/273.14. He set a track record 5.24 in the first round, while beating Johnny West. In the second round, he ran a 5.26/272.72 solo when Glenn Mikres broke and could not run. In the semifinals, he met Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" Probe. Both drivers had problems, and Larson recovered first to win with a 6.43/147.05 over Mark's 10.97/71. In the final, he again had problems and shut off to 13.18, while Dale Pulde won a 5.37. He got into the final at the next NHRA event as well, the Supernationals at Houston. Bruce qualified #2 with a 5.30/277.69. He got lucky in round one, where his 6.63/186.11 advanced over a troubled Al Hofmann. In round two, he picked up the pace to a 5.31/265.72 to stop Spurlock's 5.34/275. Ed McCulloch smoked the tires against him in the semifinals and his 5.32/268.97 advanced into the finals. There, he ran John Force. Unfortunately, Larson smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.70-98.72, while Force won with a 5.36/272. The Gatornationals at Gainesville was the next stop on the NHRA tour. Bruce ran 5.48/271.00 to qualify #8. He beat Richard Hartman in the first round, while a strong 5.28/272 beat Mikres in round two. He got out of shape and shut off in the semifinals, losing to McCulloch's 5.44/265. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Larson set a track record of 280.89 in qualifying. The accompanying ET of 5.24 qualified #2. He lost a motor in the first round, but his 5.26/273 still beat Doc Halladay. After putting in a new bullet, a 5.28/269 in round two beat Jerry Caminito. But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner McCulloch. The Mid-South Nationals at Memphis were next on the NHRA schedule. A 5.28 qualified #3 in the field. Larson lasted until the semifinals before his 5.50 lost to Oswald's 5.40. At Baton Rouge, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 5.47/273.63 qualified #5. He beat Tim Grose in the first round before losing a blower and the race to McCulloch in round two. Tim Richards gave tuning tips. Photo from the 1990 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. |

Notes: Inaugural Funny Car Reunion: Bruce Larson then brought out the famous and fabulous "US A-1" 1968 Camaro. After a crowd-pleasing burnout, Jungle Pam herself backed Bruce up, the unique "LOPE. LOPE. LOPE." of the blown Chevy piercing the Englishtown air. Bruce nailed it at the green and was on a fantastic pass, but (seemingly reluctantly) shut if off at half-track, as the safety rules state he must with an absolutely period correct piece. The times: 8.054 at 135.37 mph. - Bill Pratt |
