Notes: Original Thunderbolt S/S car. Lawton reset the NHRA Super Stock record to 11.60 at Connecticut on September 20. The speed on the run was 126.05. Earlier set 11.69/122.64 National Records at Cecil County 1964. Lawton's Thunderbolt was tearing up the Hemis in October. He beat Al Eckstrand's "Lawman" three straight, and then the following week (October 18), he was at Charlestown Dragway in Rhode Island where he met up with Bill Flynn in the "Highlander" Plymouth. Lawton once again won three straight with a best of 10.9/130.61 (both track records). (It should be noted that match race times involved significant 'super tuning' - the 427 T Bolt S/S times were behind the Race Hemi ETs by the Indy Nationals - Lindamood in a Hemi won Top Stock with an 11.31). |

Notes: Bill started his season with a big win at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On Friday, his 11.07 was the second quickest Mustang behind Len Richter's 10.94. They were all chasing "Dyno Don" Nicholson, who had run 10.90 in his Comet. Thirteen cars showed for the Factory Stock Eliminator. Lawton was paired against Nicholson in the first round, as luck would have it. The Comet broke, and Lawton advanced with an 11.59. In round two, he improved to 10.95, and in the semifinal, his 10.93/127.84 beat Tommy Grove's 10.95/126.05. He faced Richter in the final, and Len's car failed to fire, so Bill ran 10.92/128.20 for the victory. The "Tasca Ford" was not run again until March 28, when Lawton showed up at Connecticut's opener. Ford had put a hold on match race competition for 30 days, and Bill was here for some text passes. His best times were 10.66/130.93. On May 30, Dover held a three-car race. Lawton came off the trail and warmed up with a 10.36. In his first race, his 10.35/134.20 easily covered Doc Burgess' 10.70/132 in the "Black Arrow." He ran the "Larsen Ford" Mustang driven by Bob Hamilton in the next race. Once again, Lawton made it look easy as his 10.37/136.20 covered Bob's 10.92/123. For the final race, he lined back up against Burgess' Plymouth. Lawton really laid down a number as his 10.31 beat Doc's 10.63. He ran Eddie Schartman's Comet at Connecticut on June 13, where he won all three races with a best of 10.53/132.25 compared to Ed's best of 10.82/125. Lawton was at Maple Grove on July 30 for what was supposed to be a match race against Bob Harrop's "Flying Carpet" Dodge. This was in the midst of the factory war between Chrysler's altered wheelbase cars and Ford's SOHC-powered Mustangs. Ford wanted the Dodge to run with more weight, and Chrysler said no. So Bill had no competition. But Malcolm Durham was there with his altered wheelbase Chevelle and said he would race in Harrop's place. So the two lined up for the first race, Durham fouled, but Lawton stopped and said they would try again. This time they left together, but Malcolm lost a clutch. The next race saw Malcolm foul again, and once again, Bill showed he was a sportsman by letting the two line up again. This time the Chevelle broke its rear end. After several hours to fix, the two came back for their last race. This time, there were no red lights, and Lawton's A/FX track records on 10.49/132.15 beat the Chevy's 11.16/125. Notes: Won inaugural NE Funny Car Nats. Injected fuel here. Ran on gas as well. AWB tube chassis. Car was probably run early 1967 too. Was "Mystery 9" early in 1966, "Mystery 8" late in 1966. Ran 8.43 at Townsend, MD, per 11/11/66 Drag News. Bill faced Ronnie Sox for a best of three match race at Capitol on October 2. Sox had lots of problems and broke in the first two races. Lawton won with times of 8.87/166.35 and 8.43/167.59. Sox was unable to run the last race, but Lawton decided to run a solo and try to hit 170 mph. I'm sure he was sorry he tried as he scattered his engine all over the track when a rod let go. | We need to sort out the various Mystery x cars and the timeline. Notes: Bill ran injected gas into at least the 9.70s. We need to confirm that Bill ran all these times on gas. Otherwise, edit the injected nitro entry to add these 8-second notes and revert to 9.73 at Irwindale 66 (2/18/66 Drag World) | 145.16 mph at Deland 66 (8/26/66 Drag News) for gas. He also ran the car on fuel. He may have run the car early in 1967. Tube AWB chassis. It started in 1966 as "Mystery 9," later was "Mystery 8." | Lawton had a great year in '66. It began by winning the Gas Funny Car class at the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Gas Ronda in the final with a 9.78/140.40, beating Ronda's 9.85/141. He was at DeLand Drag Stip in February for the NASCAR Winter Championships. Right off the trailer, he ran 10.03/142 on a warm-up run. He lost to fellow Ford runner Phil Bonner in the Handicap Ultra Stock eliminations. However, Lawton still wasn't out of it, as NASCAR had its Heads-Up class for the low eight stockers. Only three fuel-injected SOHC Ford's were on hand, and they all qualified easily. Bill then beat Melvin Yow and Bud Faubel to reach the final, facing Bonner again. He then ran 10.15/138 for the victory over Bonner's Falcon. The following weekend, the race at DeLand continued. In the Handicap class, Lawton lost to Dick Brannan in the semifinal. In the Heads-Up class, Bill went 10.06/145.16 over Faubel in the opening round, and in the semifinal, his 9.83/144.92 beat Dave Strickler's 10.25/136. Once again, the final was between Lawton and Bonner. Bill missed a shift this time and had to settle for the runner-up spot to Phil's 10.03/140. On April 10, he had a best-of-three-match race with the "Ramchargers" at Connecticut. Bill beat the "Ramchargers" driver Jim Thornton three straight with runs of 9.07/153.84, a 9.15/153.84 when Jim fouled, and a final 9.00/155.97 to take the match. On April 17, he beat Malcolm Durham three straight at Englishtown with a best of 9.14. The following week on April 24, he dumped Ronnie Sox three straight at Aquasco. His best there was an 8.97/153.06. He took a hit on his home track, Connecticut, on May 15 when Bill Flynn in the "Yankee Peddler" beat him three straight. He won the Cecil County Factory Showdown on May 22. He ran a 9.40 in the first round when the "Ramchargers" fouled. A second-round 9.16 beat Cecil County Yother, and in the semifinals, he got an odd lot single. He beat Phil Bonner in the final with a 9.04/155.44. He had a rematch with Flynn at Connecticut on June 26 and beat him. |

Notes: AKA Mystery 8. In January, for the AHRA Winternationals, Bill had led qualifying with an 8.76/163.63. He then set Low ET and Top Speed in the 2400-pound Funny Car class with an 8.53/167.59 that beat Gene Snow. He won his second-round race but blew his transmission and couldn't return for the next round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran an 8.58/167.91 and won the B/XS class with an 8.71/168.22. At the NASCAR Winter Championships, Lawton lost to Ronnie Sox in the first round of both Heads-up eliminator and Handicap Eliminator. He ran 9.69/141.50. On April 9 at Aquasco Speedway, Bill downed the Ramchargers two straight in a best-of-three match race. Lawton's best times at the match race were 8.52/164.93. NASCAR held a race at Capitol on May 13, and Bill ran as well as 8.63/158.45 in stopping Dave Strickler's Corvette, but he failed to reach the finals. The next day he was at Connecticut for a best of three match with Bob Sullivan's "Pandemonium" Camaro. The blown Hemi-powered Camaro had the speed, but it wasn't as quick as Lawton's Mustang. Bill's best was an 8.53/168.85 in the first race. Sullivan was after to win the second race, and Bill won the match by winning the final. On May 21, he was at Aquasco for a ten-car show. It rained out shortly after the first round, but Bill had run 8.89/149.50 over a fouling Bobby Wood in his race. Lawton was at Englishtown on May 28 for a best-of-three match against Malcolm Durham. Bill won the match two straight with times of 8.62/164.53 and 8.81/163.83. He won the big Memorial Day Funny Car meet in Connecticut on May 30. A final round 8.89/156.79 gave him the victory after earlier running a best of 8.60/160.71. He beat Joe Lunati at Connecticut in another match race shortly after that. Lawton ran a best of 8.59 there, and it was reported that it was the last run for the "Mystery 8" Mustang as a new car was replacing it. He was running 70 percent nitro. At Bristol in June for the NHRA Springnationals, Lawton debuted his new Logghe-built Mustang. He qualified #6 at 8.469/169.17. An 8.33/176.81 in the first round beat Ed Burnett's 10.43/137, but he lost to Tom Grove in the second round, 8.38/168 to a 14-second shutoff. Only two cars showed up on Friday, June 23, for the 2000-pound fuel class at Cecil for the Super Stock Nationals. The first run between the two was also the final. Lawton won when Ed Schartman fouled against him. The next day, twelve cars were competing in the class. Lawton's 8.44 in the opening round beat Paul Hatton's 8.84, but in the second round, his 8.32 fell to Maynard Rupp's 8.29. Connecticut held a race early in July, and Bill's 8.46/167.28 beat Steve Bovan's 8.90/167 in the first round. In the second round, his off-pace 9.66/95.54 lost to Malcolm Durham's 8.75/164. He was back in Connecticut a few days later for a twelve-car show. He was un-beatable this day as he reset the track record at will. His 8.35/170.45 over Bovan in the first round was a new track ET record, and he lowered it to 8.30 while beating Larry Reyes in the "Kingfish." He faced the "Secret Weapon" Jeep of Roger Wolford in the final, and Roger broke, so Lawton ran 8.32/171.75 for the victory. Soon after, Bill faced off against "Jungle Jim" Liberman at Aquasco. Lawton got the win by default after Liberman cracked a cylinder head while running a winning 8.91/150 in the first round. Lawton then made two solo passes to win, running a best of 8.21/172.14. He had a bad day at Thompson Dragway on July 23, where he lost three straight to Dick Harrell. He was late in their first race and shut off in the second round. In the third race, his 9.00/150.00 lost to Harrell's 8.43/165. Bill's Mustang was still unblown at the US Nationals, but he qualified #8 with an 8.30/172.74. Unfortunately, he came up against Doug Thorley's Corvair in round one. An 8.128/177.86 lost to Doug's 7.81/185. After Indy, the writing was on the wall: you needed to be blown. Shortly after this, a blower was installed. |

Notes: In the sixties, Bill Lawton was Rhode Island's most successful funny car driver. Teamed with Tasca Ford and tuner John Healey, Lawton won many races in the Super Stock, Factory experimental, and Funny Car classes. Lawton's biggest win came at the 1965 NHRA Winternationals, where he won Factory experimental. The win came in the "Mystery 8," so dubbed for the goal of running an eight-second time. Bill continued to race with Tasca until the "Mystery 7." Tasca left drag racing at the same time the Ford Motor Company did. Lawton continued to race funny cars on his own. Tasca returned to drag racing in the new century with an associate sponsorship for John Force. Tasca also raced a TA/FC with his son, dubbed the "Mystery 5." The photo shows the '67 Logghe-built Mustang, still running an injected SOHC 427, but the car would soon have a blower like the majority of the fuel funny cars. | Lawton was at Englishtown for a best of three match race against Roy Gay and his "Infinity" Firebird. In the first race, Bill won with an 8.09/180.72. Unfortunately, Roy lost an engine on his losing 8.19/172 pass, so Lawton ran a solo that set both ends of the track record at 7.85/185.56. He was going to make a third run attempting to better his record, but he lost a motor 500 feet off the line. Bill ran 191.48 at Crofton, MD, on June 1. On July 14, in Connecticut, Lawton ran 189.06 in a match race against Dick Bourgeois. The speed was a track record. Back at Connecticut on August 4, he raced Frank Federici in a best, two out of three match race. In the first race, his 7.68/171.75 beat Frank's 8.58/167. Frank's Corvette broke in the second race, and Lawton singled for the match race victory. He raced Roger Lindamood on August 11 for a best of three match at Norwood, Mass. It was a 1/8 mile track, and Lawton won the first race with a 5.31/145 over Roger's 5.37/152. Both ran 5.01 in the second race, but the "Color Me Gone" Charger got the win light. In the third race, Lindamood got the match race victory with a 5.14/153, beating Bill's 5.32/142. Bill was at Capitol Raceway on September 21 for a match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. In their first race, JJ's 7.64/190 came out on top over Lawton's 7.71/185.94. In the second race, Lawton fouled while the Nova blew its transmission and coasted to a 9.38 win. With Liberman winning two straight and now having the blown trans, no other runs were made. On November 24, the "Mystery "7" was at Connecticut for a match race against Malcolm Durham. The "Strip Blazer" had nothing but problems, and the Camaro lost three straight to the Mustang. Bill had run 7.80/187.50,8.30/189.46 and a 7.78/192.70 to sew up the match. His final speed was also a new track record. Photo courtesy Drag Racing Memories. |

Notes: Bill Lawton didn't tour much in '68 or '69, staying in the Connecticut area. His Mustang (updated for '69 with a Paul Shedlik Mach 1 body) was still a stout performer. At Connecticut on April 20, he ran a match race against Norm Weekly in the Mr. Norm Charger. Both cars had trouble in their first race, but Norm's 9.43/123.11 beat Lawton's ailing 10.47/91.64. In the second round, an 8.35/157.89 beat the Charger that lost a motor and slowed to an 8.83/138.21. Bill singled with an 8.08/172.24 to win the match. On April 27 at Connecticut, Lawton ran a best of 7.90/175.78 while losing three straight to a tough Charlie Allen, who lowered the track record on every run, dropping it to a 7.45/196.50. He lost a best of three match to Clare Sanders on May 17 at Pittsburgh. An off-pace 8.04/152.28 lost to Sanders' 7.86/182 in the first race, and in the second race, the Mustang broke, and Clare won by default. On June 1, Connecticut held its Memorial Day Championships, and Lawton won the race when in the final, both he and Al Graeber blew their transmissions. Bill won the coasting contest. Bill had run a first-round 8.08/177.10 and a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.56/194.80 in the semis over Charlie Allen's 7.60/191.05. Terry Hedrick met Lawton in Connecticut on June 22 for a match race. A 7.75/188.66 beat Hedrick's 7.81/189 in the first race, but Bill lost oil pressure in his transmission and shut off in the second race giving Terry a solo for the win. In the third and deciding race, a 7.57/187.50 beat the Super Shaker that got out of shape. On August 17 in Connecticut, Allen had a rematch against Lawton, and once again, Charlie won all three races. Bill ran a 7.70 best. Late in August, Detroit Dragway held an eight-car event where all cars made three runs. The car that won the most rounds won. Bill didn't do very well this day, losing all three of his races. He was quicker in his first race (8.28/154) than his competition (8.38/191), Terry Hedrick, but lost to a holeshot. In the second race, Larry Reyes' 7.44/193 beat Bill's 7.76/167. And in his last race, Roger Lindamood's 7.49/197 beat his 7.79/181. Connecticut held two days of Funny Car racing on September 7 and 8. On the 7th, eight cars competed. Bill ran 7.88/185.94 over Curtis Wasson's 8.83/134 in the first round, but Malcolm Durham's 7.77/192 beat his 7.83/190.66 in the semifinal. On September 8, fourteen funny cars showed at Connecticut, and Lawton's 7.90/185.56 lost to Mel Perry's 7.73/185.56 in the first round. On September 21 at Epping, N. H., for the New England Funny Car Championships, Lew Arrington's 7.32/195 beat Bill's 7.32/200.44 in the first round. The speed was Top Speed of the meet and a new track record. He also ran 7.36 at Epping. |
