Notes: This quarter-mile run at Fremont - at 6.99 claimed to be the first six-second time ever cut - was Leasher's first time in the car, per article in May 5/1962, issue of Drag News. (Speed on this record run was 207.36 mph.) "Just wait until we get to Bonneville," was a phrase heard frequently in the ecstatic Palamides pits, according to the article's author. Four months later, Leasher was killed in a spectacular accident at Bonneville while piloting another Palamides racecar, the Infinity LSR machine. - RT

Notes: The UDRA held a two-day show at Fontana on January 2 and 3. Bill was there and ran both days. On Saturday, he lost in round one when his 7.89/187.50 fell to eventual winner Danny Ongais' 7.78/194. The following day, he ran 7.80/191.48 to get past round one, but a great 7.79 in round two lost to the even greater 7.53 posted by Larry Faust. He failed to qualify for an eight-car show at Pomona on January 17 when his best of 8.10/189 left him as the first alternate for the show. He won a sixteen-car show at Fontana on January 24. He beat Norm Weekly in the final. Leavitt faced off against Dick Lechien in a best two out of three match at Lions on January 30. Bill won the first race with an 8.90/140.62 when Lechien fouled away an 8.28/197. In the second race, Bill had problems, and his 8.45/154.63 lost to Dick's 7.93/195. He lost the third race and the match when his 8.13/190.26 lost to Lechien's 8.09/182. The next day (January 31), he was at Fontana for a sixteen-car show. A quick-leaving 7.98/192.70 beat Nick Marshall's quicker 7.94/190 in the first round, but he lost to Paul Sutherland in the second round. On February 13, he was at Lions for a sixteen-car show. He qualified with a 7.90/196.92, and in the first round, his 7.96/197.36 advanced. In the second round, his 8.09/196.96 beat Tom McEwen's late 7.99/205. In the semifinals, he again won with a holeshot when his 8.08/195.27 beat Mike Snively's quicker 8.01/197 in Ed Pink's "Old Master." In the final, he was up against the Low ET car of Rick Stewart. They both got off the line well, but both cars broke and coasted to the finish, with Rick winning. Bill was running well at Carlsbad on February 28. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, his 7.68 beat Tom Brown, who fouled. In the semifinals, he ran his best ever (to this point), a 7.65 at 197.36, but it came with a loss as Ongais beat him with a track record 7.50. Bill qualified at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, and in the opening round, his 7.89/183.66 beat Maynard Rupp's 8.08. In the second round, he had problems and slowed to 9.11/116.27 in a loss to Bobby Langley's 7.88/188.

Notes: Bill qualified #7 with a 7.97/189.86 at Pomona on Jan 9 for the Jackpot Pro Circuit Fuel race. He beat Don Prudhomme in the first round, before losing to Tommy Allen in the semifinals. Another Pro Circuit Fuel race was run at Pomona on January 23. Once again, he qualified with a 7.97, but it was good for the #14 spot this time. He lost early. At Lions on February 26 for the UDRA Winternationals, a 7.90 just made the show in the #32 spot. Once again, he lost early. Bill qualified #5 at a sixteen-car show at Lions with a 7.86 on May 14. In the first round, he improved to a 7.80/196.92, and he ran an even better 7.77/188.28 in the second round but lost to Ken Safford. He was back at Lions on May 28 for another sixteen-car show, and a first-round 7.82/200.00 beat Rick Stewart, but Leavitt's motor blew, and Stewart got back in under the "break rule." He finished runner-up to Allen on June 25 at a Top Fuel show at Carlsbad. Lions held an eight-car show on July 9, and Bill qualified #5 with a 7.63/204.54. He advanced past the first-round when Bob Downey failed to fire in the "Howard Cam Special." He only needed an 8.81/128.36 when Don Hampton shut off with no oil pressure in the semifinals. In the final, he ran an 8.07/166.05 for the runner-up spot to Dave Beebe's 7.47/191. On August 15, Bill was at Carlsbad for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he ran an off pace 8.26/184.42 in the first round, and lost to Allen's 7.60/180. The next day (August 16), he was at Lions for an eight-car show. He had trouble and was unable to run in the first round. On August 26, he was back at Carlsbad, but his bad luck persisted when he broke in the first round. Irwindale held an eight-car show on Dec.10, and 25 cars showed up and attempted to qualify. Bill qualified on the "bump" with a 7.50/205.00. Unfortunately, he fouled against eventual winner Leroy Goldstein in the opening round of competition.

Notes: First in 6.40s. WITH a 354" Chrysler punched out to 371 inches. Only NHRA national event appearance was at the Ontario Supernationals where he qualified #2 with a 6.917/205.94 and went two rounds. Quite an ET drop a few weeks later. | Although Goldstein’s 6.80 ended the year as the national record, I’d be remiss for not mentioning Bill Leavitt, who ran a stunning series of passes — 6.48, 6.51, and 6.53 — at Lions’ Grand Finale in December, though national records were not available for those runs. - Phil Burgess, National Dragster

Notes: Bill entered the '72 season as the quickest in the class due to his 6.48 run at Lions in December. There was nothing "trick" about the car; it used a 118" Byron Blair chassis. The engine was a '58 354 Chrysler Hemi punched out to 471 inches built by Leavitt. Internals included Crower cam, Howards rods, and Venolia pistons. Cragar supplied the blower drive, manifold, and headers. The injection was by Crower. A Lenco transmission transferred the power back to a quick change rear end. Leavitt had a good season in '72. He started it the right way by winning the New Year's race at Fremont. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #1 with a 6.75. An opening round 6.67 beat Ed McCulloch, and in the semifinals, Bill's 6.76 beat Gene Snow, who had a transmission failure. He faced Twig Zeigler in the final, and he set a track record of 6.64 in winning. Leavitt's speed on the run was 208. He lost early at the AHRA Winternationals, where Leroy Goldstein stopped him. He also lost early at the second OCIR All-Pro race, where he had problems in the first round, and shut off to a 10.96 loss to eventual winner Snow's 6.69. The following week (January 28), he was at Lions for the Grand Premiere event. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.11/169.17 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.79/215 in Mickey Thompson's Pinto. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (times not reported). He had Jim Nicoll's name on the side of the car there. That was Bill's last NHRA national event of 1972. Leavitt set a 6.47 track record at Atco and a 6.45 Maple Grove track record in July. Bill ran 6.818/196.50 at Tulsa PRA in September. Bill qualified #10 for the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 (times unknown). In round one, he beat a broken Danny Ongais with a 7.27. In round two, Billy Meyer nipped his 6.87 with a 6.81.

Notes: At the twice rain-delayed NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, Leavitt qualified #7 with a 7.462/194.38. The car came up ailing in round one, running an 8.369/131.77 that lost to Tom McEwen's 7.60. Shortly after that, he went to Irwindale for its Night Opener. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 7.15/182.92 defeated Don Prudhomme, who shut down with problems. Bill Frederick was there with his rocket car, and he accidentally spilled rocket fuel all over the left lane, making that lane useless. In the semifinal, Leavitt's 8.21/103.68 beat Jim Dunn, skating all over the track in the left lane. In the final, he was to face Sush Matsubara, and track management decided to make each car run down the right lane, with the lowest ET being declared the winner. Bill ran 6.83/206.89, but then Sush ran 6.64/224 for the victory. Bill qualified #2 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.90. Unfortunately, in the first round, he fouled against Ed McCulloch. OCIR held an eight-car show in March, and Leavitt qualified #3 with a 6.79. He beat Joe Lee's 7.22/199 in the first round, with a 7.04/189.87, but he broke and could not run in the semifinal. He was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race, where he qualified #10 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.89. But he lost to eventual winner McEwen in the opening round when he went into a wheelstand and shut off. He was in Connecticut for a four-car show in April. Bill was deemed the winner after running a best of 6.63/211. On April 29, he was at Atco for the Funny Car Factory Showdown. It was an eight-car field, and Bill did not have a good day. in the opening round, his troubled 9.07/87.50 lost to Pat Foster's 7.16/205. He then ran in a couple of consolation races. In the first consolation race, his 7.80/189.98 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.16/219, and in the other, Tom Prock smoked the tires against him, and Bill got his only win of the day with a 7.26/199.55. In May, National Trail hosted the second NHRA Division 3 race. Bill qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In the first round, a 6.89/207.85 beat Bob Durban and in the semifinals, a 6.92/205.94 lost to Al Segrini's 6.65/218. He won the Connecticut Memorial Day Championships, where he ran a final round 6.82/206.89 over Al Segrini. He also won the Spring Funny Car Championships held at New England Dragway early in June. This was a sixteen-car field. His 6.69/211 defeated the "Freedom Machine in round one." A second-round 6.70/211 took out Jimmy King's 6.80/214. His 6.68/221 beat Prock in the semifinal, who went up in smoke in the "Custom Body" car. He faced Rowe in the final. Rowe was the favorite based on his 6.47 semifinal time. But the "Cuda lost a blower belt in the final and slowed to 6.87/163 in a runner-up effort to Leavitt's 6.66/215. In June, he was back at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #7 with a 6.837/206.42. In the first round, an off pace 7.023/190.67 lost to Larry Arnold's 6.87/218. He got a big win the following week (June 17), when he claimed the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. He beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" Charger, Jim Paoli with a 6.76, and Larry Fullerton in that order to meet Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the final. Colson's supercharger exploded on the line, and Leavitt singled for the victory with a 6.71/207.89. He was back in Connecticut for its Summer Funny Car Championships. It was another sixteen-car show, and he beat the "Freedom Machine" in the first round, with a 6.88/195.22. He dropped a close one to Jake Crimmins in the "Swensen-Lani" car in round two. Bill's 6.78/209.79 narrowly lost to Jake's 6.77/212. Early in July, Leavitt was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He received no ET in the first round, but his speed was registered at 203.16 while beating Fred Goeske. His 6.90/193.96 fell to Pee Wee Wallace's 6.74/219 in the "Alabamian" in the semifinal. Bill failed to qualify when he returned to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals (times unavailable). His next stop was at New England for its fifth Funny Car Tourney race. In the opening round, a 6.68/205 beat Pete Hill's 6.82/206, but he lost to eventual winner Segrini in round two. At the Rockford Manufacturers Meet, he failed to run quick enough to make the finals, but he beat Don Schumacher with a 6.79 and a 6.70 beat Colson. On July 25, he was at Maple Grove for the All-American Funny Car Race. He lost to Roy Harris' 6.90/209 in the first round, with a 7.09/195.65. Bill was the sixth alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.56/215.82. New England held its Funny Car Nationals on September 16. It was a 32-car show, and Bill won his first-round race easily. In round two, Al Bergler lost a supercharger on the line, and Leavitt singled with a 6.54/201. He lost in round three with a sub-par 7.19/126 that fell to Pee Wee Wallace's 6.60/213.

Notes: Bill was in New England in June for its Spring Funny Car Nationals. The race had been delayed one week due to rain. It was an eight-car field, and Leavitt's 6.75/183 qualified #1. But that was as "slow" as he ran at this race as he kept getting quicker. In the opening round, his 6.46/205.47 defeated Joe Jacono's 7.10/172. In the semifinals, Jimmy King's 7.10/197 fell to his 6.45/205.94. Jacono had gotten back into the show on the "break rule" for the "Frantic Ford." It was Joe that Bill ran in the final. Bill was not to be stopped on this day as he set a 6.28 track record (at 212.26) in the final to beat Jacono's 6.77/182. Shortly after this, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.63 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. His first-round opponent, Charles Lee, was shut off on the line for leaking oil. Bill ran a solo 8.13 to advance. In the second round, his 6.50/208.81 beat Tommy Grove's 6.57/214. He lost to Al Segrini's 6.38/227 in the semifinal. Bill ran 6.40 at PRO Long Island NY 8/18/74. He also won the Epping NE Funny Car Nats with a final round 6.54/192.30 and a best of 6.47.

Notes: Who had the strongest Donovan-powered Funny Car in '75? It had to be a toss-up between Leavitt and John Lombardo. Bill was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with a 6.66 but lost to Billy Meyer driving Gene Snow's Vega in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his low qualifying 6.21 held for Low ET. He made it into the semifinals before he smoked the tires to a 6.72 that lost to Mike Miller's 6.44 in the "Green Elephant." At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bill qualified #14 with a 6.57. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.59/159 that lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.73/211 in the "Blue Max." Shortly after this, he was at the Englishtown Opener, where he got crossed-up against Tom Prock in the first round, and shut off. In April, he was at the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. He qualified #4 but failed to reach the finals. His next stop was at the Cecil County National Open. He made it to the final by beating Tom Raley (George of the Jungle) in the first round, and running an easy single in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Joe Jacono, and Leavitt's troubled 9.50 got the runner-up spot to Jacono's 6.86. Back at Maple Grove for the fifth annual Dutch Classic, Bill went into a huge wheelstand against Al Segrini in the first round, and shut down. Leavitt was at Atco for the CARS Magazine Meet in May. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, he beat Jacono's 7.15/213 with a 7.12/204.08. In the semifinals, his Mustang broke and coasted to a 10.27/86 loss to Segrini's 6.55/200. In June, he went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he failed to qualify for the show. Shortly after that, he beat Jacono in the final to win the New England Funny Car Championships. He qualified #1 for the eight-car show with a 6.75/183, and in round one, his 6.46/205.47 beat Jacono. A semifinal 6.45/205.94 beat Jimmy King's 7.10/197 and moved him into the final. Jacono was to be his final round opponent as he had gotten back into the show on the "break rule" when Dodger Glenn had his throttle stick open in the first round, and ended up smoking the pistons in the "Frantic Ford." Bill really picked up in the final, running a track record 6.28 at 212.26 to claim the victory over Joe's 6.77/182. Later in the month, he went to Suffolk, where he reset the track record to 6.18. Near the end of June, he was back in New England for a Wednesday night race. While he didn't win or reach the final, he was right in the thick of things, running 6.46/197. The month of July didn't start out the greatest for Leavitt as he went up to Canada for the Gold Cup Championships held at Cayuga and lost all three of his races. All the cars were to make three passes, and on Leavitt's first race, his 6.62/215.82 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.59/221. In his second race, he ran 6.84/194.80, but Don Prudhomme beat him to the finish line with a 6.76/205. For the last race, he faced Tommy Grove, but the "Quickie Too" broke on the line. He qualified #10 with a 6.50/216.34 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, he lost fire on the line in the first round, giving Gary Burgin a single into round two. Leavitt won the Connecticut Summer Funny Car Championships. He had a little luck along the way. An opening round 6.63/210.77 beat Jacono's 6.91/193, but in the semifinals, his 7.08/215.31 lost to Segrini's 6.91/166. These two would race again in the final when Kosty Ivanof broke after winning his semifinal race. Bill returned via the "break rule." He beat Segrini's 6.63/209 in the "Black Magic" Vega with a 6.49/215.82. Bill used the same old 1971 Blair chassis with a new body.

Notes: Sold car to Rodalyn Knox. Ran 6.76 DNQ at NHRA Summernationals 76. We need to confirm if it was this car or the Mustang II. Al Segrini also drove. Car indicated a Donovan 417 motor on the car's lettering, but Bill switched to a Milodon just before selling it to Rodalyn.

Notes: Bill was at Phoenix in January for the Winter Classic. He qualified #11 and, in the first round, fouled away a 6.58/220.04 in a loss to Tom Prock. He was the fifth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.490/222.22 failed to make the show. He also failed to qualify at Gainesville (#2 alternate) for the Gatornationals with a 6.62/206.42 (although Al Segrini did qualify Bill's other car, the Mighty Monza). Bill was at Englishtown for its Spring Funny Car Bonanza race in April, but the Mustang broke on the line in the opening round against Prock. He competed at Maple Grove for its Dutch Classic in May, but the car caught fire on the line in the opening round of competition. Bill was OK, but his opponent, Arne Swensen, made a solo to advance. Bill also failed to qualify at NHRA Columbus, finishing at #3 alternate at 6.763/219.57. That was Bill's last NHRA national event in 1976. | Had he switched to a Milodon for 1976?

Notes: Leavitt was at Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.69 won his first-round race over Al Hanna, but he smoked the tires in the second round and lost to Billy Graham's 6.43. He competed at the Canadian Gold Cup Championships in Cayuga, Ontario, in July. It was an eight-car field, and in the opening round, his ailing 8.18/123 lost to Bruce Larson's 6.85/203. He came back out later for a consolation race against Tom Prock, and despite blowing his engine, his 6.74/196 beat Tom Prock's 8.07.
