Notes: Credited with a 7.72 in 1966. Can this be verified? | Not many gas dragsters had a Cadillac as a push car, but this one did. Tom Larkin had been racing for 11 years. He started with a '55 Chevy and moved up through the classes until he ran this Top Gas dragster in '66. It was based on a 132" chassis built by Roy Fjasted at Speed Products Engineering. The engine was a 392 Hemi that used a Delta stroker crank to achieve 462 cubic inch It used M/T rods and 7.5:1 pistons along with a Crower cam. Mondello was responsible for the porting and polishing of the heads. Both the intake and the exhaust valves were 2/1/16" and came from Donovan. An M/T manifold secured the Larry Bowers prepared magnesium blower that was overdriven 24%. The blower drive was from Delta. The power was put to the ground through an Olds rear with 3.90 gears. This was the third gas dragster to run a "seven.” It came at Lions on April 23 when Larkin ran 7.98. Tom reset the NHRA record to 8.11 on May 1 at Half Moon Bay for the NHRA Division 7 race. To prove it was no fluke, he also won Top Gas eliminator with a final round 8.01/190.66.

Notes: 142" SPE chassis. This is Big Tom Larkin (the older one). Larkin started the season at Lions for an eight-car show on Jan 7. He qualified #1 with a 7.90 and ran a best of 7.88 in eliminations on his way to a final round meeting with Norm Wilcox. Tommy took the victory with a 7.91. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Larkin qualified #5 with an 8.00/189.86. The car weighed in at 1,160 lbs. He improved to a 7.97/176.12 in the first round, to beat Bill Smith in the "Otie's Speed Shop" car, but an even better 7.96/189.06 in round two lost to Rich Rogers' Low ET of the meet blast of 7.86/192. On March 19, Larkin was at Irwindale for another eight-car show. His 7.93 qualified #1, but he fouled in the first round. He was at Riverside for the HRM Championships in April. In the first round his 7.98/174.41 beat Bob Dodge and in round two a 7.92/189.06 got around Larry Bowers' 8.05/193. Both he and Billy Scott ran 7.93 (Larkin at 189.06) in the semifinals, but Scott got to the finish line first. In a June '67 Drag News there's an ad for SPE claiming that Tom Larkin set the NHRA Top Gas record at 7.72 using their chassis. - RH

Notes: Larkin's 226.58 mph blast was the top speed registered during the 1968 World Series of Drag Racing at Cordova IL (a 1,000-ft track). -- RT | Former Top Gas car. Confirmed 7.056/221.66 (DNQ) at Indy 1968. Tom ran a 7.07 at only 189 at Riverside on 3/24/68. At the second annual Stardust National Open at Las Vegas, Tom qualified #2 in the sixteen-car show with a 7.11. In the first round, he put a holeshot on Don Prudhomme and held on to it for a win. In the second round, he lost to Tom McEwen. Larkin ran his first-ever "six," a 6.99 at OCIR on March 3 for the PDA Championships. Unfortunately, he failed to make the finals. He was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on April 6, where he lasted until the semifinals. He beat Mike Snively in the first round, with a 7.59/183.28, and in the second round, Norm Weekly fouled against him. Larkin was at Lions on May 11 for an eight-car show. He qualified #6, and in the opening round, his 7.25/178.21 beat Kelly Brown's late-leaving 7.12/212. He then lost to eventual winner Steve Carbone in the semifinal. Tom qualified with a 6.92/184.80 at the PDA Championships at Lions on July 20. A first-round 8.04 got him into round two, where Chris Karamesines' 6.76/218.44 (Low ET) beat his 7.12/166.97. Notes: Big Tom Larkin (the older one). Ran 6.82 at Lions Drag Strip. | Larkin ran a 7.04/213.77 to qualify #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he lost to the eventual winner John Mulligan's 7.12/221 with a 7.24/206.42. He ran really well at the Stardust Open at Las Vegas on February 16. Tom beat Don Garlits in the first round, and he made it into the semifinals of the sixteen-car show. In the semifinals, he lost a blower in the lights while losing to another eventual winner Don Prudhomme. At Bakersfield for the March Meet, he had more bad luck when he blew a motor in the first round, and slowed to a 7.52/146.23 loss to Ron Rivero.

Notes: Big Tom Larkin (the older one of two Tom Larkins in Top Fuel) switched from Top Gas to Top Fuel for the '70 season. Woody Gilmore of Race Car Engineering built him a 195" wheelbase chassis. The solid mounted rear end was a Dana carrying 4.10 gears. The engine was a 392 that kept its stock displacement. M/T rods and pistons were used as well as a Crower cam. A Cragar manifold held one of Larkin's own prepared blowers, and he chose Hilborn for injection. Tom qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Sears Point for the San Francisco National Open with a 7.17. He almost went all the way to the winner's circle. In round one, his 7.27 beat James Warren, who shut down to 8.08. In the second round, Bob Murray fouled, and he advanced with an 8.91. A 7.09 in the semifinal defeated Vic Brown's off-pace 7.95. He faced Jerry Ruth in the final, and despite running a 7.11/183.29, he lost to Ruth's 7.01/216. Larkin was at OCIR at the end of March for its final All-Pro race. He advanced easily in the first round when his opponent, Ron Manke, lost fire. In the second round, his ailing 10.43 lost to Jerry Vargas' 7.25. Early in May, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He qualified #7 with a 7.26 but hurt the car and could not run in eliminations. He was back at Irwindale on May 23 for the NHRA Division 7 race but failed to qualify for the sixteen car field that had a 6.98 "bump." During the '70 NHRA Springnationals at Dallas, Tom was attempting to qualify when his supercharger exploded at the 1,000 feet mark. The car went up in flames, and Larkin was unable to see. He got it stopped and got out, but he received burns to his hands and his knees. The injuries kept him out of the driver's seat for a few months.

Notes: The car debuted in late 1971 and was run at the NHRA Supernationals. Larkin was back and forth to Don Long’s shop for 39 weeks while the car took shape on the jig. Long didn’t want to put the canards on the car, but Larkin convinced him, though he felt later they should have been laid back more. The tail was Long’s idea. This was his first rear-engine car; the second was the Cerny & Moody car, which took only two weeks. The car ran poorly at OMS (7.03/163), darting around for unknown reasons, but once it made a full pass, Larkin loved it. No oil, no fumes, and he could see everything. The car later ran 6.79/212 at OCIR and 6.69 at Lions. JM

Notes: Big Tom Larkin (the older one). According to Tom Larkin, the canard wings were his idea, but Don Long didn’t want to install them. So he worked with John Mitchell to make them, and Long eventually put them on. He now realizes he should have laid them back more. They mounted the chute high for added stability, but probably should have had a wing. This car was built before Garlits built his rear-engine car and took 39 weeks to build because of all the new tricks being employed. The car ran in late 1971 at the NHRA Supernationals. Larkin says he sold this car to the Hilton family of Cincinnati, OH, and they did well with it. JM
