Notes: They competed in the 4-day race at Union Grove on July 4-6 in the Great Lakes National Championship and won the A/Comp class with 11.82 at 123.45 mph. On Aug. 24 at Cordova at the World Series of Drag Racing, he won the AA/Competition Coupe class and was awarded the best-engineered car. Notes: Gordon Swearingen drove this car early in the year before Leffler took over the driving chores. Neil was driving the car in June at Irwindale's Doubleheader event. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Dunn in the first round. Neil was at Irwindale on July 6 for the NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.70. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.05/179.28 lost to Roger Garten's 6.71/216 in the "Warhorse." He also competed at OCIR on July 26 for the PDA Championships, but he failed to reach the finals. In August, his next stop was at Seattle for its Seafair 64-car show. In round one, his 7.17/189 lost to Richard Rogers' 7.10/204. He beat Mike Van Sant's "Invader" in the second round with a 6.72. It was one of the first funny cars to use Marc Danekas "super blower," the earliest version of an 8/71. Grand Prix, Irwindale CA 8/74. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. |

Notes: Neil was at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race in January. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field. An opening round 6.33/218.97 beat Gary Densham, but in round two, he was shut off on the line with an oil leak, advancing Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" into the semifinals. The team then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals and qualified #1 with a 6.32 (Low ET). In the first round, he beat a motor-blowing Gordie Bonin with a 6.46/189.86. He got past a fouling Dale Pulde in the "Eastern Raider" in the second round, and a semifinal 6.72/199.10 beat Billy Meyer in Gene Snow's Vega. In the final, he ran Shirl Greer, and both had some traction problems, but Greer's 7.03/218 beat Neil's 7.08/220.58 for the win. Jim Terry and Leffler were hoping for more good fortune at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Once again, they qualified well, with a 6.333/225.56, taking the #6 position. In the first round, Neil slowed to a 6.88 that lost to Gary Burgin's 6.40. But Gary had crossed the centerline and was disqualified, and Leffler was back in the show. He didn't hang around for long, though, as he lost to a 6.37 pass by Don Prudhomme in round two. At the AHRA Grand American West at OCIR in March, 17 cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car show. Neil qualified #3 with a 6.66. A 7.21/196.50 beat a motor-blowing Bryan Raines in the first round, but his off-pace 7.56 in round two lost to Jim Dunn's 7.08. In May, Prudhomme reset the track record at Fremont with a 6.24, but Neil Leffler and Jim Terry amazed all by snatching it from him with a 6.18. By Indy, Neil was driving the California Charger car. |
