Notes: One of 57 Z-11 Chevys built for the '63 model year. Z-11 was a stroked 409 (427 CID) with other race-only improvements in a body whose aluminum components included hood, front fenders and front and rear bumpers. Leal successfully switched to a Ford T-bolt the next year, and then made a long-term commitment to Plymouth in 1965. Unattributed times quoted below from Leal's recollections and may be approximate. - RT |

Notes: Plymouth welcomed Leal into its racing team for the '65 season, and he got one of the altered wb cars. He started the season by winning the Ultra Stock class at the AHRA Winter Championships held in Phoenix, Arizona. He had run a best of 10.76 there. As the season progressed, his times dropped into the 9.90s. He then hit the 9.80s and 9.70s on gas. The car was injected; Leal was wary of blowers. The quickest and fastest the car ran on gas was 9.69/144.92 (from Butch's website). Confirmed 9.75 at Lions 11/18/65 Drag News and 142.4 at Fremont 6/12/65 Drag News. - DL | He converted his legal S/S car to injected, AWB match race configuration in mid-season. - RT |

Notes: Leal had been driving Super Stock 409 Chevies in '62 and '63. For the '64 season, he switched to the Ford Thunderbolt with the 427. While he ran well with the Ford, he saw just how strong the Hemi's were and wanted one for the '65 season. Plymouth was quite happy to have Leal join their team as it got one of its main competitors on its side. Notes: Leal's first flopper: Hilborn-injected late hemi, TorqueFlite, Logghe chassis combo. Leal was leery of blowers. Butch ran this Logghe-built Barracuda in '67. B&N Fiberglass made the body. A stock stroke and bore 426 Hemi powered the car. He and crew chief Jack Smith built and maintained the engine. M/T supplied the rods and pistons while an Isky cam was used. The Hilborn injectors fed the 90% nitro mix to the engine. The transmission was a TorqueFlite built by Art Carr. This was one of the strongest unblown FCs in '67. Leal was at Fremont on April 2 for a best-of-three-match race against Mark Bloom, who was driving the "Bloomin' Bullet" Camaro. Leal won two straight with times of 9.51/165.13 and 8.59/170.77. Mark's best was 9.63. A week later (April 8), he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. There were two classes of FCs run, and he was in the 2,000 lb. class. Leal's 8.92/168.50 qualified #2 behind Jack Chrisman's 8.71/177. In the opening round, his 8.87/170.45 beat Steve Bovan. He reached the final to face Chrisman's Comet, but the 'Cuda broke and could not run, so Jack soloed for the money. Shortly after, he was at Gary, Indiana's US 30, for a four-car event. In his first race, Butch's 8.45/166.67 beat Roger Lindamood. In his next race, he ran Dean Nicopolis in the "Hemi Hunter" Camaro. Dean watched as Leal pulled away from him and won easily with an 8.28/178.27. There was talk about Leal being able to mount a challenge to the dominating Comets of "Dyno" Don Nicholson and "Fast Eddie" Schartman. On May 7, he was in Minneapolis, where he raced Dick Loehr. He won two straight with times of 10.30/113.92 and 9.44/173.07 on the cold track. The two strongest Plymouth FCs locked horns for a best-of-three match race at Lions on July 8. Fred Goeske's "Hemi-'Cuda" had been laying down big mph numbers for quite a while before Leal brought out his flip-ton car, so this would be a big match. Leal was more than up to the task as he won three straight with times of 8.03/171.75 (over Fred's 8.31/186),8.04/169.17, over Fred's 8.36 at a crazy 187.88, and another 8.03. On August 12, Leal was at Lions for a best-of-three match against Doug Thorley's new Corvair. The Chevy was supercharged and, as we know, would later prove to be a strong contender by winning the NHRA Nationals. But at this event, the hatchback stopped the Corvair two straight with times of 8.08/173.74 and 8.07. Doug's times were 8.21/184 and 8.10/181. On September 9, Butch went up against Don Gay at OCIR. Gay was debuting his new Firebird, so new car blues held back its performance to an 8.95 best, while Leal won all three races with times of 8.15/166.97, 8.14/174.08, and 8.08/173.07. He was back at OCIR later in the month for another best of three, this time against Gas Ronda's new Mustang. Ronda had just driven the car to some shake-down runs before their match but still ran a best of 8.38. But there was no stopping Leal as he went undefeated again, winning all three races with a best of 8.08/176.81. Leal campaigned the car until the end of the year and was having a new car built for the '68 season, but he saw the future of FC and realized that a blower was needed to stay competitive. He wasn't willing to go that route as he saw way too many blower explosions. This was 1967's quickest and fastest injected funny car at 7.82/181.90 (per Butch's website). He also ran 8.03/177.71 somewhere and 8.22/176.47 at the OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. - Danny White | The car was featured in the 12/67 issue of Drag Strip. - RT; Photo: Hot Rod Archive Series, no. 6, Hemi Power (Winter 2007), p. 32 -MB |

Notes: The 9.57/144.92 were both ends of the NHRA national record set in June 1971 at Fremont. 1971 NHRA Division 7 Champion. #4 at Indy 1971 at 9.668/142.63. 1971 Fremont World Championship Series Champion. 1971 Amarillo Texas World Championship Series Champion. 1971 OCIR Points Champion. Ran 9.531 and a string of 9.5s at NHRA Supernationals (at 144.23) but was disqualified for a wheelbase infraction. | Leal debuted his new Ron Butler-built Duster on May 15 at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 race. His first run off the trailer with the car was a 10.13/139.75. While he didn't win, he did set Low ET and Top Speed at 9.82/141.06. A week later (May 23), he took the car to victory at Bremerton's NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 9.74/142.18 that beat Ken Van Cleave's 9.94/139 runner-up effort. On May 29, he was at OCIR for the Hang Ten race. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, Leal set a new track ET record of 9.71 at 143.08. His 9.72 at 144.69 set a new track mph record in the semifinals, but he fouled on the run, advancing eventual winner Ken Dondero's 9.87/141 in Dick Landy's Challenger. |

Notes: Also, qualified at 9.534/144.23 at Tulsa PRA 8/72, and ran 9.46 during eliminations at that race. 1972 NHRA National Pro Stock Top Speed Record 145.86 (from Butch's website). 9.44/145.63 low qualifier at Lions Last Drag Race. 1972 NHRA Pro Stock Division 7 Champion. 1972 Drag News Pro Stock Driver of the Year. 1972 Popular Hot Rod Meet Champion. 1972 Bakersfield March Meet Champion. 1972 NHRA National Pro Stock Top Speed Record 145.86. 1972 OCIR All-Pro Championship Series. 1972 AHRA World Champion Fremont, California. 1972 AHRA Winter Nationals Pro Stock Champion at Phoenix Arizona. 1972 Bonneville World Championship Series Pro Stock Champion. 1972 Sacramento California World Championship Series Pro Stock Champion. 1972 OCIR Pro Stock Match Race Showdown winner. 1972 Las Vegas World Championship Series Pro Stock Champion. Won final event of the year in 1972 over Larry Huff at OCIR All Pro Series on 12/31/72 with a 9.41/145.86. | Leal was tough to beat in '72. Although he didn't win any NHRA National events, he won everywhere else. He started the season by winning the OCIR All-Pro Opener. On the way to the final, he reset the track mph record to 146.10. A 9.56/144.65 in the final beat Bob Lambeck. He followed that up by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline. There, he qualified #2 with a 9.62 just behind Don Nicholson's 9.60. "Dyno's" Maverick went out in the first round, with no oil pressure and Leal took over as the favorite. A first-round 9.61 beat Barrie Poole and in round two, he took out Reid Whisnant with a 9.57 (Low ET). He soloed in the semifinals and in the final, he was up against Bill Bagshaw. A 9.66/143.08 got the victory over Bagshaw's 9.75/141. At the second OCIR All-Pro race, he set Low ET and Top Speed in the final while beating John Petrie with a 9.58/144.00. On January 28, he was at Lions for the Grand Premiere race. His 9.54 qualified #1 and held for Low ET. Once again, he reached the final. There he ran Nicholson. Leal was late and Don left on time, recording a 9.59/142 for the win while Butch's 9.57/143.54 got him the runner-up spot. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field and Leal qualified #2. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the second round with a 9.58/144.69 over Mike Fons. But in round three, he lost oil pressure and shut off, giving Arlen Vanke a solo into the semifinals. The following week (February 13), he was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 9.58. Steady 9.7s in eliminations got him another win. A first-round 9.71 beat Lambeck while a semifinal 9.70/143.76 beat Bagshaw's 9.75/141. His final round opponent was Dick Landy. The two had a close race with Leal's 9.71/142.85 getting the win over Landy's 9.73/140. This was a pretty impressive track record considering it was only February. The winning continued in March when he won the Las Vegas National Open. He set Low ET and Top Speed as well. A final round 9.94 beat Don Lorentzen's Camaro. Then Butch went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Of course, he won again. In the semifinals, his track record 9.69 at 142.40 (Top Speed) beat Landy. In the final, Lambeck fouled against him and Leal won with a 9.72/141.95. His next stop was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.56, but he got quicker as the race progressed. A first-round 9.44/146.34 (Top Speed) beat Bob Anderson while in round two, a 9.60/141.73 took out Henry Ponzo. He had a tough race in the semifinals against Ken Dondero driving "Dyno's" Cammer-powered Maverick. Leal set Low ET with a track record 9.40/146.10 to beat Dondero's hard-charging 9.46/145. After that, you would think he would go on and win over Lambeck in the final. Not so, Leal fouled and Bob went on to win with a 9.52/142. He was at Gainesville the following week (March 19), for the NHRA Gatornationals. Butch qualified an uncharacteristic #7 in the sixteen-car show with a 9.64. Even more uncharacteristic was his first-round loss to Melvin Yow when he missed a shift and slowed to 14.59. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 25 and Leal set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 9.64. But once again, he missed a shift, this time in the semifinals against Ken Van Cleave. Even with the loss, Leal had racked up enough points to win the OCIR All-Pro Pro Stock championship. He was runner-up to Bagshaw at the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Irwindale. Won the last race of 1972 over Larry Huff at OCIR on 12/31/72 with a 9.41/145.86 in the 1972 car. |

Notes: 1972 UHRA Pro Stock Champion. At Detroit, Michigan, ran 9.29/148.20. Then, running 250 lbs. light and using rosin, ran an amazing 9.11/150.50. Also ran 9.32 at Martin, Michigan. Was that legal weight or the match race configuration? |

Notes: 1973 AHRA National Pro Stock record holder at 8.88/154.10. Ran 9.10/150.50 at Indy, 9.07/149.75 qualifying #1 at the Tulsa PRA National Challenge. Set NHRA National Record of 151.77 at Englishtown, after going 8.98/151. 1973 Grand American Final Fremont California Pro Stock Champion at 8.91/153.75. The photo from the 1973 Popular Hot Rodding Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. 1973 Popular Hot Rod Meet Champion. 1973 Drag News Pro Stock Driver of the Year. 1973 Irwindale California Grand Prix Pro Stock Champion. 1973 Pro Stock runner-up NHRA Summernationals. 1973 Pro Stock runner-up NHRA Springnationals. | Leal was pretty much unbeatable in the OCIR All-Pro Series in '73. The first of the four races was actually run on December 31/1972. Butch set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 9.41/145.86 to beat Larry Huff's 9.56/143 for the victory. The second race was almost a repeat of the first. Leal qualified #1, set a track speed record of 147.29 and then met with Huff again in the final. There he reset the OCIR track record with a 9.36 at 147.05 over Huff's 9.55/144 for his second straight series win. At the AHRA Winternationals, he blew two transmissions during qualifying. He figured that was enough and packed up. He was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. Once again, he reset the track record, this time to 9.32 in qualifying #1. This time he faced Dick Landy in the final. Landy had stolen his track record away with a semifinal 9.27 so it was a close race. But Leal prevailed, running a 9.44/146.81 to win over a troubled 10.35/101. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 9.52/146.34 qualified #7 in the 32-car field. He beat Gene McKinney in the first round, with a 9.59/145.86, but in round two his 9.64/145.63 lost to eventual winner Don Nicholson's 9.55/145. Butch then went to Famoso on March 4 for the Bakersfield March Meet. He ran well and probably would have won, but he broke against Bill Bagshaw early in eliminations. At OCIR's final All-Pro event, Leal again reached the final, but this time he fouled away a 9.34/147.29 while Landy picked up the win with a 9.17/149. Still, he was the OCIR All-Pro Pro Stock series champion. In April, he won the Las Vegas Open at Lions and another win came in May at the NHRA Division 7 race at Famoso. There he set Low ET at 9.41 and in the final beat Sonny Bryant. He was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The Mopars were strong there taking three of the top four spots in qualifying. Leal's 9.37/147.05 qualified #4. In the first round, his 9.48/145.86 beat Ronnie Sox's 9.51/144. In round two, he faced another Mopar, Bob Riffle's. This time Leal's 9.52/144.92 beat Riffle's 9.55/145. In the semifinals, a 9.42 beat Wayne Gapp's Pinto at 9.59. It was an all-Mopar final, with Leal facing Don Carlton and the "Mopar Missile.†Unfortunately, Butch fouled away a 9.44/146.81 while Carlton picked up the win with a 9.40/147. The following week (June 17) found Leal at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET at 9.22 in qualifying #1, and he lasted until round two where his 9.46/147.78 (Top Speed) lost to Sox's slower 9.55. He had the quickest Mopar in qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 9.18 got him the #3 spot in the 32-car field. For the second straight NHRA race, he worked his way into the final. A 9.22/149.25 beat Levi Holmes in the opening round while a second round 9.07/151.00 beat Landy. In round three, Butch's 9.12/150.75 took out Riffle and in the semifinals, a 9.09/151.51 trailered Melvin Yow's 9.15/151. He faced "Grumpy" Bill Jenkins in the final and Jenkins won with a 9.02/150 over Leal's 9.13/151.77 (Top Speed and a new track record). He followed the NHRA tour up to Canada for the Grandnationals where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 9.06. This was his race to win. He opened up eliminations with a 9.17/150.00 over Bert Straus's Pontiac. In round two, he outdrove Paul Blevins by getting off the line first and running 9.17/150.50 to beat Blevins' quicker 9.10/149. He had another close race in the semifinals where his 9.11/151.26 beat Nicholson's 9.15/147. This put him in his third NHRA event final in a row. He faced future superstar, Bob Glidden in the final. Leal's 9.13/151.00 scored the victory over Glidden's off-pace 9.40/135. Another win soon followed when he won the PHR Championships on August 12. It was another sixteen-car field, and he ran 9.20/149.50 over low qualifier, Nicholson in the first round. A second-round 9.17/149.50 beat Sox and a semifinal 9.15/150.25 beat Carlton's 9.18/147. In the final, he was up against Gapp, but Gapp lost a clutch and Leal's 9.18/149.50 got him the victory. Yet another final round showing came on August 26 at the AHRA National Challenge race. He led the 32-car field in qualifying with a 9.07 (Low ET) at 149.75. After an easy first-round, he ran 9.17/150 in round two over Reid Whisnant's 9.27/146. He beat Riffle on a holeshot in round three before surviving a close semifinal race with Nicholson. Leal's 9.15/150.00 just nipped "Dyno's" 9.16/148. It was Leal vs Jenkins again and once again "Grumpy" got the win with a 9.08/150 beating Butch's 9.16/149.75 runner-up effort. A week later (September 3), he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. His 9.14/150.50 qualified #5, and he was the quickest Mopar qualifier. He improved to 9.10 in the first round, to beat Sonny Bryant's 9.40. In round two his 9.12/151.00 beat Bobby Yowell, but in the third round, his 9.09/150.75 lost to eventual winner Glidden's 9.05/152. He went to OCIR for the AHRA Western Nationals. It was the ninth of ten AHRA Grand American races. Leal kicked, butt here. He qualified #1 with an 8.99/153. In the first round, his 8.98 advanced and in round two he soloed with an 8.96/152 when Larry Huff broke on the line. In the semifinals, he picked up to 8.92/153.58 while beating Landy's 9.18/150. He faced Bagshaw in the final, but there didn't really need to be a car in the other lane as Leal reset both ends of the AHRA record with an 8.88/154.10 to totally dominate the race. A side note had to be Bagshaw's sportsmanship. Butch's Duster ran out of gas on the line in the final and Bill could have soloed for the win, but he waited for Leal's crew to put fuel into the car and give the fans a race. Leal also went to Fremont for the AHRA World Championships. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.91/153.06. Only 13 cars showed, so he got the odd-lot solo in the first round, and cooled it with a 12.94. In round two he beat Lee Hunter's Pinto with a 9.00 and an 8.97/151.51 beat Scott Shafiroff in the semifinals. He faced Bagshaw in the final again and this time Bill fouled so Leal picked up another win. The wins kept on coming as in October. He won the Irwindale Grand Prix, stopping Landy's 9.16/151 in the final with a 9.00/151.77. |

Notes: 1977 NHRA National Record holder B/G 8.387/156.25 (confirm that it was Butch's Arrow and not Rodger Denney's). Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from Butch's website. Photo from the 1977 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Was the 8.38 in another class? Leal had the B/G at 8.87 156.25. |

Notes: Qualified #6 at first 500 inch Pro Stock race at the 1982 NHRA Winternationals, 8.033/172.08. Qualified 9th at Indy 82 at 7.919/173.07. | Mopar lovers couldn't wait for the '82 season to begin. It had been over ten years since the Hemi had dominated the Pro Stock ranks before it had been all but outlawed with a pencil. The rules hung more and more weight on the Hemi-powered cars until they became non-competitive. Now the rules were 500 cubic inches, 2350 lbs, gas, and carburetors. How could they lose? The problem was, in the last ten years, development work went on with the big block Chevy in Pro Stock. Even the Boss 429 Fords had a couple of years of development in the big cubic inch IHRA Pro Stock wars while little was done for the 426 Hemi in Pro Stock racing. The Hemi racers now had to catch up fast. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, four Mopars qualified for the field. Butch's was the second quickest of the bunch, running 8.03/172.08 to qualify #6 overall in the show. Unfortunately, another 8.03/170.45 lost to a quick-leaving Jerry Janke, who won with an 8.15/166. At the NHRA Gatornationals, only one Mopar qualified, and it was not Leal's as Butch failed to qualify. Ran 7.888 at NHRA Fremont for his best ET and 174.08 at NHRA Orange County Finals for his best speed. |
