Notes: Injected fuel. Jungle Jim's first funny car. Have read that this had a 426 Dodge Hemi in it, 427 on the fender would indicate otherwise. - Dennis Doubleday | Dennis is right, that had to be a Chevy. Direct drive in '65? NO WAY. A Torqueflite most likely, possibly a turbo hydro. A bucks down guy like Liberman would have gone with a proven Torqueflite. No direct drive for an injected car then. Only tire smokers like Chrisman and Garlits' Dart were direct drive. - Norman Hechtkoff |

Notes: First Jungle Jim Funny Car was a steel body that ran off the end of Fremont. 2220 lbs. 110" box tube AWB. Liberman started 1966 in "Hercules" Chevy II, then teamed with Lew Arrington on "Brutus" GTO, then debuted this Chevy II late in 1966. These stats are on fuel, but ran alky in car to begin with. August 1970 Car Craft interview says car ran a best of 8.19/182 in 1966, but that sounds more like 1967. I've found an 8.48/169.54. End of year for sale ad claims 8.19/177.86 best, so that is the winning combo until further info is found. | Jim Liberman was only 21 when he built this car, but he already had years of experience with these types of cars. He only took six weeks to build this Nova. A stock-sized 427 Chevy powered the car. M/T rods held Venolia pistons and the cam came from Crower. The heads were modified by Mondello. A Hilborn injector sat on top of the GMC 6/71. The rest of the driveline consisted of a TorqueFlite transmission and an Olds 3.90 rear end. Jim did all his own work including the aluminum for the interior. The second run ever on the car came at Lions where he ran 8.83/161.77 on 25%. That was really flying at that time, even more so for a Chevy when the Mopars and Fords were dominating. |

Notes: Car started its life with a 421 Pontiac punched out to 440" and running ultra-ultra-rate Mickey Thompson hemi heads before reliability dictated the switch to an early 392 Hemi. An Irwindale ad says this car ran 8.55, and the Hot Rod Yearbook #6 says the best speed was 164.97. (We need confirmation of those times, slightly better than the timeslip-derived numbers provided here.) Liberman started 1966 in his "Hercules" Chevy II before teaming up with Lew Arrington to make his name with this car. He finished 1966 behind the wheel of his new Chevy II. Liberman did drive the GTO early in 1967, as did owner Lew Arrington. The car was sold to Don Williamson in 1968, and was destroyed in a crash later that year with future altered driver Jim Trillo at the wheel. - RT and DD | Jim had Lew's car out at Irwindale for some test passes on June 18. He made three runs with times of 10.25/146.10/10.16/151.51, and a 10.03/141.50. The next day (June 19), he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. Jim really picked up the pace, running 9.39/147.05 in his first-round solo followed by a 9.45/150.75 in the semifinals that lost to Dick Landy's 9.19/154. Landy's car had problems and was unable to make the final so Liberman got back in on the "break rule." He faced Jack Chrisman in the final. Jack was on a tear, running 8.7's throughout eliminations. The final round was no different as Jack took the victory with an 8.71 over Jim's one second slower 9.70. On June 25, Liberman faced Al Vanderwoude's "Flying Dutchman" in a best of three at Irwindale. Liberman won the match by winning all three races with a best of 9.41/155.97. As the season progressed, "Brutus" continued to get stronger. At Irwindale on July 23, Jim beat Roger Wolford in the "Secret Weapon" Jeep two straight, running 10.15/157.06 and 9.41/160.14 to win the match. After the match race, Jim made a single run at 9.19/161.29. The following day (July 24), he won the AHRA World Championships at Lions. An 8.91 in the first round, beat Dee Keaton's Comet and in the semifinals, he recorded a 9.17/161.87 to beat Steve Bovan. He faced Wolford in the final and the Jeep lost a clutch so Jim grabbed the win, hitting 162.16. By September, the eights were the norm for "Brutus." A rematch between Liberman and Vanderwoude was run at Fresno on September 17 and Jim won two straight over the "Flying Dutchman" with times of 8.85/161 and 8.88/161.57. After winning the match he came back out and ran a single at 8.59/163.93. Another rematch was held at Lions on September 24 against the "Secret Weapon" of Wolford. Jim again won the match, running an 8.84/162.16 best. Jim took a loss on October 9 at Carlsbad. It was a best of three match against Gas Ronda's SOHC Mustang. Jim won the first race when both ran below normal times. Liberman's 9.26/158.45 beat the unblown Mustang's 9.49/152. But Ronda came back to win the next two races and the match. An 8.89/160 beat Jim's 9.05/159.01 in the second race and in the third race, Liberman'S 8.99/160.71 lost to Gaspar's 8.90/160. Jim's own car was nearing completion and his days of driving for Arrington were numbered. On October 15 he drove the "Brutus" to a best of three match race victory over Maynard Rupp's "Chevoom," a rear-engined, Hemi-powered Chevelle. Jim won the match two straight, running 8.89/144.69 and 8.77/162.72. |

Notes: Ran 8.06/182.92 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. | Jim was at Irwindale for the New Year's Funny Car race on January 2. He qualified #7 in the eight-car show with an 8.91/166.66, but he lost in the first round. He was at Fremont on January 7 for a best-of-three match race against Ed Schartman. Ed "rattled" his cage, winning three straight. Schartman's best was an 8.14 while JJ's best was an 8.61. He competed at Pomona in the S/XS class for the NHRA Winternationals. Jim beat Pete Gates in the first round, before losing to Roger Wolford's 8.47/172 in the second round with an 8.79/167.59. On March 19, Carlsbad held an eight-car event, and 15 FCs attempted to qualify. Jim ran an 8.84 for the #5 spot. He beat low qualifier Steve Bovan in the first round, with a 9.00/164.23. In the semifinal, he ran his best (to this point) 8.45/164.23 to beat Fred Goeske in the "Hemi-Cuda." In the final, he was to run Randy Walls, but Walls had blown his transmission in the semis, so Liberman soloed for the victory. On April 1, Jim was driving the "Brutus" GTO at a match race against Malcolm Durham at Capitol. He blew the GTO's engine in the second race, and he pulled his Nova out of the truck to race against Durham in the final race. It paid off as the two had both won a race each, and in the decisive last race, the Nova hustled to an 8.75/162.74 for the match race win. Jim ran Schartman at York, Pa., for a match race on April 29. He won the first race with an 8.63/163.04 when Ed lost a rear end. In the second race, Schartman set an 8.17 track record over JJ, who lost a transmission. In the third race, Jim wrapped up the match with a blower exploding in the lights pass of 8.54/163.04 that just beat Schartman's 8.54/151. On May 10, he was at Cecil County for the Factory Showdown. He crossed the center line in the first round, on an 8.31/171.10 pass against Jack Chrisman. After his first-round loss, he came out and ran a solo pass of 8.19. It was his best to this point. Set Maple Grove track records of 8.29/172.85 on May 13. Also ran a 7.83 Irwindale track record. On May 26 at Gary, Ind., US 30 for the UDRA Championships, ran 8.40/168.59 over Roger Wolford's 8.66/168.54 in the semifinal. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Jim started his '68 season at Irwindale's New Year's day race by qualifying third with an 8.08 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 8.18/180 beat Lew Arrington's 8.40/175, but he failed to make it into the finals. He qualified #1 with a 7.88/180.72 on January 14 at OCIR for an eight-car show and his first-round 7.85/183.28 beat the New Breed. A semifinal 8.02/181.08 beat Gas Ronda's 8.33. In the final, Jim's 7.86/183.28 beat Clare Sanders' 7.71/187.91 in the Limefire. He then went to Lions for the AHRA Winter meet where he qualified way down in twelfth place with an 8.52/141.50 in the 32-car field. He had an easy first-round race, but then ran his best time ever at 7.75/184.80 in round two over Marv Eldridge's 8.08/174. In the third round, he advanced with an 8.18 and in the semifinal, an 8.05 beat Gene Snow's 8.91. He was to face Don Nicholson in the final and Jim was good enough to give Don extra time to fix his transmission he blew in the semis. But the starter signaled for the backup car of Snow to fire just as Nicholson came out of the pits. There was a lot of yelling by racers, officials, and fans, but Liberman beat Snow for the win with a 7.84. On February 24, Lions held a sixteen-car show and an 8.39 qualified Jim eleventh. Arrington ran a first-round 7.95/183 to drop his 8.39/177.86 in the first round. The following day on February 25, he set Low ET at 7.83 in the final while beating Roger Lindamood who fouled in the final at Carlsbad's South Coast Funny Car Championships. A first-round 7.89/182.92 beat Steve Bovan (8.32), a second round 7.84/183.28 beat Ray Alley (8.35), and a semifinal 7.86/180.72 beat Arrington (8.20). Thirty funny cars showed to qualify on March 3 for a sixteen-car field at Irwindale and Jim qualified third with an 8.12/178.21. A first-round 7.99/174.41 advanced when Eldridge's Corvette lost fire on the line. A second round 8.18/171.10 beat Fred Goeske's ailing 8.73 and in the semis, he lost to Steve Bovan. In May at Pittsburgh for their Funny Car Championships, he made it into the finals only to lose to a Terry Hedrick holeshot. Jim's better 7.88 lost to Terry's 7.92. Another runner-up finish came on May 18 at Cecil County's Fuel Showdown. He ran well, posting a 7.79/182.18 first-round win over Bill Lawton's 7.96/180, and a second round 7.92/182.18 over Arnie Beswick's 8.17/174. But in the final a 7.85/182.92 was no match for Tom Grove's 7.65/192.70. Another win came on May 30 at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. His final round 7.88/183.28 beat the Kingfish. Aquasco held their third annual Funny Car Invitational in June and a first-round 7.98/181.80 beat a fouling Beswick, but the rest of the meet was rained out. On June 19, Liberman and Grove had a match race at Cecil County. In the first race, Tom's track record 7.52/197.36 beat Jim who fouled away a 7.85/181.08. In the second race, Tom got Jim two straight with a 7.81/193 over JJ. He did better against Nicholson who debuted his new Cougar at a match race at Capitol. Jim won the first race with a 7.66/187.88 when Don blew his trans and rain washed out the other two races so Liberman won the match. At the Cars Magazine meet on July 27, he broke on the line in the first round, advancing Tony Wahlay. He was at Detroit Dragway on August 6 where he drove off the track to avoid hitting some people that were on the track. He was OK, but the car was damaged. Jim ran 185.92 on September 22 for a Maple Grove track record in a match race against Eddie Schartman. JJ's 7.72/184.80 won the first race over Ed's 7.95/177, but another 7.72/185.92 was foiled by the evil red light. Ed won the last race and the match. Another match race was run against Larry Reyes on October 4 at Norwood, Mass. Reyes beat JJ two straight before Jim won the final with a track record 4.94 at 152.54. He then took on Bruce Larson for a best of three match at Cecil on October 6. Jim lost the first race when Larson got a good jump and his 7.64/188 held on to win over JJ's quicker 7.59/187.50. But Jim came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 7.78/187.50 and 7.81/183.66. At the Lions Funny Car Championships on November 16, Jim set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.65/187.50 and went on to win over Jack Chrisman in the final. He won both his first and semifinal rounds with 7.65's. At the OCIR Manufacturer's meet, he ran a 7.89/181.44 best, but failed to run fast enough to make the final. He qualified second with an 8.20/185 (Top Speed) at Sacramento for the Drag Racing Magazine meet, but lost to Kip Brundage in the first round. Jim won the final race of the year he competed in, the first OCIR All-Pro event of '69, which was run on 12/29/68. He qualified third with a 7.80/182.30 and advanced past the first-round when Charlie Allen broke. He had another easy run in the semis when Randy Walls fouled against him. In the final he ran his all-time bests of 7.53/193.12 to beat Don Schumacher's 7.57/196.50. — Ron Howard |

Notes: Russell "James" Liberman topped the 60sFunnyCars.com poll as the number one funny car racer of the 1960s. Not much more can be said about Russell Liberman, the man. Liberman ranked number 17 on the list of top NHRA drivers, had two NHRA national events victories (one of those as an owner), and an infamous legacy rivaling that of a rock star. Russell began his funny car career in such cars as the "Hercules," the "Gypsy" Corvette, and the "Brutus" GTO. Russell's stardom skyrocketed when he built the first "Jungle Jim" Chevy II. By 1969, "Jungle Jim's" long, smoking burnouts (some preceded by a fire burnout), high-speed backups, and long, twisting wheelstands had cemented his place as a popular racer with the fans. The showmanship had previously been backed up with average finishes, but these stopped in 1969. Russell had two Chevrolet-powered Novas in 1969 with Clare Sanders in the second car. The two started the year off with a bang with Sanders beating Jungle at Pomona for the Winternationals title. Liberman then went on the match race circuit to win countless races, running bests of 7.28/198.64. By the end of 1969, Jungle had one of the most successful years in history for a Chevy-powered funny car. Liberman knew that the day of the successful Chevy powered engine in AA/FC was limited. By the end of the next year, "Jungle" had switched to a Hemi. (Info from Dennis Doubleday). | JJ started his season by qualifying #13 at the Irwindale New Year's Day race and a first-round 7.67/191.08 beat Fred Goeske's 7.88/184. In the second round, his Nova came up ailing against Don Schumacher who unloaded a 7.52/198 to put Jim on the trailer. He faced off against Charlie Allen for a match race on January 12 at Irwindale and won his first race with an 8.12/191.08 over Allen's wheelstanding Dart. Allen came back with a 7.74/182 to win the second race over Jim who broke a rocker arm. JJ won the deciding match with an 8.23/190.26 when Charlie pulled another wheelie and lost. At the AHRA Winternats, Jim beat Tony Wahlay and Allen before meeting Clare Sanders in his second car in the semis. He beat a motor blowing Clare, but since they were taking turns driving each of the cars he let Sanders drive in the final. He qualified #7 with a 7.74/186.32 on February 9 at the second OCIR All-Pro race. It was an unusual event for Jim, and he ended up getting beat twice. In the first round, he lost to Danny Ongais' 7.60/160 in the first round, with a 7.69/191.88. But Ongais lost an engine in his Mickey Thompson owned Mustang and was unable to repair for the semifinals. This got JJ reinstated, and he faced Don Schumacher in the semis. He ran a good 7.74/192.30, but it wasn't good enough to get around Schumacher's 7.43/198. JJ raced at an eight-car show at Lions on February 22 and ran a first-round 7.72/184.42 over Steve Bovan. He lost to Rich Siroonian's 7.71 in the semis with a 7.82. Another match race was run this time against Sid Foster in the Super Cuda at Cecil County in March. JJ won the first race with a 7.83/171.11 beat Sid's 8.10/183 and Jim wrapped it up in the second race with a 7.60/187.10 to beat Foster's 8.07/169 and win the match. On April 6, he ran Schumacher at Connecticut and beat him three straight setting a 7.62 track record as well. He then took on Ron Rivero on April 13 at Atco where he won his first race with an out of shape 8.34/172.41. Ron won the second race with an 8.06/187 when JJ shut down early, and he went on to win the match with a 7.81/196 when Liberman crossed the centerline in the last race. He got back into his winning ways on April 19 at Blaney when he took on Schumacher. JJ won the first race, but Don won the second race with an 8.00/191 beating JJ's 8.07/182. Both were up for the final, but Jim had a good leave and won the match with an 8.00/182 that beat Schumacher who set 7.94/190 track records in losing. Another match race win came the next day on April 20 at Aquasco where he beat Dick Loehr two straight with a best of 7.89. He lost a match race on May 3 at York US 30 when Pat Foster beat him three straight. Jim got out of shape on his first race and lost to Pat's 8.11/175. In the second race, Jim fouled away a new track record 7.66 at 191.48 against the Mustang's 7.82/189.86. In the last race, Foster reset the track record with a 7.63/188.28 over Jim's 7.71. He traveled to Aquasco the next day (May 4) for an eight-car show, where a first-round 7.84/187.88 beat Malcolm Durham's 8.13/180. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 7.81/189.06 over Don Schumacher's 7.98/191. He faced Tommy Grove in the final, but Grove fouled and Jim ran 7.86/189.06 for the win. On May 14 he met Dick Loehr at Martin, Mich for a match race. Jim won his first race with a 7.80/188.28 when Loehr fouled (7.86/189.06). Dick came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 7.72 to JJ's best of 7.76/189.86. Way up north, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, he had a match race against Pat Minick. The Chi-Town Hustler was running strong beating Liberman in all three races with track records of 7.45/196. He went back to Aquasco for another eight-car show on May 27, and again he won, beating a fouling Durham in the final. Back at US 131 in Martin, Mich., on May 29, for a UDRA race. Dick Harrell ran a 7.84/192 to just nip JJ's 7.85/184.04 in the first round. Early in June, Larry Arnold in the Super Cuda met JJ at Suffolk for a best of three match. Jim ran 7.72/189.86 over Arnold's 8.16/179 in the first race, a 7.54/194.80 over Arnold's 7.66/190.26 in the second race and a 7.52/193.54 to make it three straight over Larry's 7.66/191. Another match race followed on June 7 at York US 30 against Grove's Mustang. Once again JJ won three straight with times of 7.61/191.70, 7.65 and a 7.70. The following day (June 8) he ran the New England Funny Car Championships at Epping. A first-round 7.69/187.90 beat Al Hanna and a 7.61/190.22 beat Chevy foe Bruce Larson in round two. In the semis, JJ needed only a 7.95 to beat Roger Lindamood's ailing Charger at 11.37. In the final a 7.73/189 beat Paul Stefansky's 8.18 for the win. At an eight-car show at New York, he set Low ET at 7.49/193.54 while beating Frank Oglesby, but while lining up for his semifinal race the Chevy lost oil pressure and Jim shut off. Aquasco held their President's Gold Cup Championships on June 22.
