Notes: Jim filled in for an ill Pat Minick at Irwindale on December 12 at the "Toys for Tots" race. He pleased the "Chi-Town Hustler" fans by doing the same long smoky burnouts that Pat was known for. Jim qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 7.40. He beat Jim Dunn's out of shape 'Cuda in the first round, with a 7.24/201.78. Unfortunately, the transmission refused to shift in the semifinals, and his 8.77/93 lost to Gene Conway's Corvette. |

Notes: Torqueflite transmission. 1980 lbs. ready to run. Also 7.14 at 210 and 7.15 at 204. NED 214.28 was a track record and won the NE Funny Car Nats that year. | As far as I know, this car never ran with a Chevy engine. It used only a Chrysler Hemi as even in late '69, his Nova switched over to a Chrysler. I understand that his second car used a Rat motor. | Jim started the season at Fremont's New Year's Day Championships. There were six cars running and Liberman beat Kip Brundage in his first race with a 7.45/189. A 7.83/189.46 lost to his close friend Lew Arrington's 7.55/184 in the second race and in his third he got out of shape and shut off against Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He was at Irwindale on January 26 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and his 8.82/177.68 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 7.69/184. He was still running his Nova when he failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The new Camaro was debuted at Lions on February 14. There were 30 cars attempting to qualify for the eight-car field and Liberman's 7.26 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 7.23. JJ soloed in the first round, with a 7.35 when Gene Conway broke, but he had problems in the semifinals and shut off to a 15.38 loss to eventual winner Minick. The following day (February 15), he was at the Northern Nationals at Fremont. Arrington lost a close first-round race to Liberman in his new Camaro. Jim's 7.57/195.22 beat Lew's 7.58/189.46. In round two, Jake Johnston fouled against him in "Blue Max" Mustang. He faced Tommy Grove's tough Cammer powered Mustang in the semifinals, but Grove broke so Jim advanced with a 7.43/200.44. This put him into the final against Minick. Once again, Pat got the better of him and JJ's 7.39/200.00 finished runner-up to Minick's 7.27/205. Early in '70, Jim bought up all of John Mazmanian's 392 Hemi motors and spare parts. In April, Liberman faced Don Schumacher in a best of three match at Capitol. Jim won two straight with times of 7.68/156.25 (over a fouling Schumacher), and 7.34/194.38. — Ron Howard |

Notes: JJ ran the Nova at Irwindale on January 26 and at the NHRA Winternationals on February 1, where he failed to qualify. He raced on February 14 at Lions, but we are not sure in which car. Considering that he ran the Camaro the next day, I would think the Camaro was first used around the middle of February, starting at Lions. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Jim started the '71 season by running at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. He qualified #10 with a 7.54 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he was caught napping by Ron O'Donnell, who put a 7.27/202 run on Jim's quicker but losing 7.23/202.70. He was at Fremont the next day for its Funny Car Championships. Jim Dunn and JJ had a tire-smoking battle in the first round, with Liberman's 8.25/187.88 coming out on top over Dunn's 8.36/182. In round two, a 7.42/189.46 beat Rich Siroonian, but he lost in the semifinals to Gene Snow. On January 10, he was at Lions for AHRA's first of ten Grand American races of '71. Jim qualified with a 7.01 and in the first round, ran his best ever (to this point) of 6.89 at 206.42. Unfortunately, even with that strong run, he was late off the line and lost to Leroy Goldstein's 6.96/207 in the "Ramchargers" car. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, Jim qualified with a 7.47 and, in the first round, ran 7.02/202.70 over John Lombardo. A 7.39 beat an out-of-shape Tom Sturm in round two, but a third-round 6.91/211.76 wasn't enough to beat Snow's 6.87/211. Early in March, Jim covered for a sick Pat Minick and drove the "Chi-Town Hustler" to win Southeastern Dragway's Spring Funny Car Championships. Late in March, he was back in his own car for a best-of-three-match race against Arne Swensen at Cecil County. Liberman reset the track record with a 7.08 at 179.64 to win the first race, and he made it two straight by winning the next race as well. Formerly listed 6.51/226.70 times, but those are very quick for 1971. We need confirmation. Jim ran a confirmed 6.78/217.39 and 6.82/201.79 at Atco. He ran 6.77/216.86 track record at NED on 9/19/71 in winning the New England Funny Car Nats and ran 6.95/211.26 (track record) at Epping on 7/04/71. |

Notes: This is my personal favorite of all the Jungle Jim cars. Built by Romeo Palamides of jet car fame in Chicago, painted by Bob Gerdes of Circus Custom Paint, then lettered by the infamous "Mr. J," it was a pretty trick piece at the time. Previously, Jungle bought cars from various builders and even built a few himself at his West Chester, Pennsylvania shop. This was Jungle's first store-bought piece in a long time, and he decided to take it out to Ontario, California, for the 1972 NHRA SuperNationals. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I do know that one pass that weekend was Jungle's personal best at the time. - Berserko Bob Doerrer | Jim ran 6.69 at OCIR and was featured in the film Funny Car Summer. He ran a confirmed 6.54/218.97 in winning the Epping Funny Car Nationals on September 10, 1972, but was that the Vega or his Camaro? | The NHRA qualifying sheets from Ontario 1972 show that Jim was the 12th alternate (no time). However, Frank Rupert was the 9th alternate at 7.143. We need to validate this 6.44/233. |

Notes: Liberman was known for putting a bunch of mix-matched engine parts together and making it run. He was running in a race and hurt something and not have the parts. Another racer might have this or that, and Liberman would throw it together and go win the race! Other times it would just blow up, but he was always a positive individual. The glass was always half full. His house was always open for other racers to stay, and they often did. His '72 season started with a win in February at the Miami-Hollywood Winter Championships. Gary Henderson, driving the "Super Duster," broke against him in the final. He competed at the IHRA Winternationals at Lakeland, where he qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.72/213.27. He beat Wayne Mahaffey in the first round, with a 6.91/213.27, but in round two, he got crossed up and shut down against Dale Pulde, driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Early in April, Jim was at Englishtown for a four-car show. He won all three of his races, running a 6.85/199.11 over Sammy Miller, a 6.78/215.31 over a motor blowing Jimmy King, and a 6.69/216 over Butch Maas driving the "Motown Shaker." An Atco match race time of 6.59/237.46 from July 12, 1972, would have been the fastest of the year and is pretty dubious. That date also would have been the Thursday before Englishtown, which is pretty suspect (the NHRA event ran from July 13 to July 16, 1972). The next fastest car in 1972 was Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer machine, who went 6.29/235.64 at the Supernationals in the fall and is recognized as the actual speed winner this year. (Info taken from an article on ATCO's 7th Annual Funny Car Championships, January 1973 issue of Rodder and Super Stock magazine. - Tom). Jim qualified #10 at the NHRA Summernationals with the Camaro at 6.745/214.79 but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round, 6.89/205 to 7.92/110. At some point after Englishtown, he switched to a new Palamides-built Vega. He qualified #14 (#9 for the East) at NHRA Amarillo (no time), and Jim won the first round over Twig Ziegler, 7.01/200.89 to 8.23/109. But Jim fell off to the eights in round two and lost to Jake Johnston, 6.61/220 to 8.03/195.22. He ran a confirmed 6.74/227 at Epping Grand American 1972 and won the Epping Funny Car Nats in late 1972 at 6.54/218.97. We need to validate whether Jim ran the post-Summernationals events in the Camaro or the new Vega. Jim ran the Vega at NHRA Ontario. |

Notes: "Jungle Jim" had a pretty good season in '73. His new Vega had been running well. He went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.58/214.79 to qualify #5 in the 32-car field. That was impressive considering there were 75 funny cars at the meet. He didn't just qualify well, he ran well in eliminations as well. An opening round 6.49/225.00 beat Frank Huff's 6.93/212 in the "King Cobra" and in round two his quick-leaving 6.60/211.76 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.59/217. Jim had another close race in round three that saw his 6.57/221.13 beat Mart Higginbotham's 6.62/218. His easiest run on his way to the final came in the semifinals where Jim Paoli smoked the tires against him. Liberman advanced with a 6.61/212.76. He faced Don Schumacher in the final and the "Shoe" had the edge. He had been running quicker and quicker in every round. His semifinal win came with a 6.42. Sure enough, Jim tried to get the power to the ground in the final and smoked the tires while Schumacher ran 6.44/220 or the win. Jim then went to Miami-Hollywood for its Funny Car Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show and Jim once again qualified #5, this time with a 6.86. He improved to 6.65/220.58 in the first round, to beat Pee Wee Wallace and in round two he beat Paul Smith in the "Fireball Vega", but Jim wounded his engine on the run and was unable to make it back for the semifinals. The NHRA Winternationals at Pomona was a mess. The track was horrible and it was rained out twice. Still, even with the tricky track conditions that kept a lot of strong teams from qualifying, Jim showed that he knew how to "read" the track and managed to qualify #14. Unfortunately, with the rain delay, Jim was unable to stay for eliminations and alternate Tom McEwen took his place in the field. He was back at Miami for its Winter Funny Car Championships. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.86 behind Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." He never ran that slow again during eliminations. He opened with a 6.72/197.80 to beat Al Marshall's 6.91/210 in the "Tyrant." Liberman had to race Marshall again in the semifinals when he got back in on the "break rule" and the results were the same. Jim’s 6.78/207.37 beat Al's 6.82/209. This put Jim in the final against Tharp. It was a close race, but JJ set Low ET and Top Speed in winning with a 6.65/216.80 over Tharp's 6.70/215. He then went to Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals where he qualified #3 with a 6.74/209.30. He dropped his ET by over two tenths in the first round, when he ran 6.50 to advance over a fouling Paul Radici. He took an easy second round win and then lost to Kelly Brown in the "Wonder Wagon" Vega in the semifinals. Jim’s 6.90/212.26 lost to Kelly's motor-blowing 6.88. Brown was unable to return to run in the final so Liberman was reinstated. It was a rematch of the AHRA Winternationals final, right down to the winner. Schumacher’s 6.55/215 beat JJ's 6.81/216.86 for the victory. In April he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He had a bit of luck in the first round, where his smoky 7.74/130.81 advanced when his competition, Harlan Thompson, had his transmission stick in low gear. After that, Jim ran strong. He set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.44/215.31 that beat Al Segrini. In the final, he faced Jake Crimmins driving the "Swensen & Lani" Mustang. Liberman picked up the win with a 6.48/215.31 over Jake's 7.03/167. On April 28, he was at Capitol, where although he failed to reach the final, he was one of four cars that ran 6.5's. The next day he won at Atco. He then won an Funny Car show at Aquasco in early May before going to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grand American race. He qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field and in the first round, he beat McEwen's 6.94 with a 6.82. A second round 6.70/205 advanced when Jim Nicoll broke and he shot to a 6.64/214.28 in the semifinals to beat Dean LaPole's Chevy powered car at 6.81. This put him into the final against Gene Snow. Gene had trouble and slowed to 14.11 while JJ picked up yet another win with a 6.86/200.44. Another win came in June over a sixteen-car field at Connecticut. There Jim ran his old friend Lew Arrington in the final. Jim was running too strong for Arrington on this day as JJ set Low ET in the final with a 6.59/213.27 that easily covered "Brutus" at 7.00/205. Liberman didn't fare so well at a best of three match race against Pat Foster driving the "Barry Setzer" Vega at Englishtown. In their first race Foster's 6.27/226 beat Jim's 6.55/220.58. In the second race, JJ's throttle linkage broke and he shut down on the line. No ET's were recorded in their third race, but Foster led them through at 227 while Jim crossed the line second at 218.44. It was a minor setback as then Jim went to Cayuga for the Canadian All-Pro Championships where he beat Bobby Rowe in the final with a 6.95/200.89. He lost early on July 4 at an eight-car show at Englishtown where Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" Demon beat him in the first round. He was back at Englishtown a couple of weeks later for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #11 with a 6.59, but a first-round 6.84/210 lost to Foster's 6.66/208. In Nov, Jim set Atco record at 6.45. |

Notes: Went 7.14/204.54 as runner-up at NHRA Englishtown 1974, where Jungle wheelstood all the way down the track. Also 6.76 at Seattle, but no doubt ran better numbers this year. |"Jungle Jim" performed really well this year, and he had to rank in the top ten of anyone's Funny Car list of '74. On May 11 he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. He had two of his cars there, the second one being driven by Roy Harris. Both cars made the final and it was strange to see "Jungle Jim" vs "Jungle Jim." Liberman started his march over the eight-car field by beating Joe Jacono in the opening round with a 6.69/192.30. In the semifinals, his 6.59/209.79 beat Jake Crimmins' quicker 6.55/215 in the Swensen-Lani Vega. The all JJ final was won by Liberman with a 6.55/210, but it was an easy win and Harris' transmission refused to shift out of low gear. The next day, Liberman was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified #8 with a 7.12/202.24. He failed to reach the finals. He won the Englishtown Memorial Day Classic Funny Car race by stopping Paul Smith in the "Fireball Vega" at 6.64 in the final with a 6.63. His next stop was at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. Things did not go his way there. He lost all three of his races. In his first race, he faced Don Prudhomme and Jim's 6.54/204.08 lost to the "Snake's" 6.49/217. He got out of shape and shut off in his second race against Charlie Proite and a 6.67/215.82 in the third race lost to Tom McEwen's 6.57/221. From there he went to New England for an eight-car show. He qualified #4 with a 6.67/192 and in round one, his 6.79/175 beat Pete Hill's 7.01/190, but he burnt a piston and was unable to run in the semifinals. Jim was back at Englishtown on July 3 for the Funny Car Spectacular. Ten Funny Car's were on hand and after the first-round, the four lowest ETs advanced to the semifinals. JJ won his first race with a 6.90/210.28 over Smith, but his ET wasn't low enough to advance to the semis. In a consolation race, he ran 6.87/208.33 over Roy Harris. Jim didn't run a lot of the big races, instead concentrating on his lucrative match race schedule, but he did race at the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.51 qualified #6, and he ran 6.85/177.86 over a tire smoking Smith in round one. A 6.54 beat Don Schumacher in round two, and he moved into the final by downing Tommy Grove in the semifinals with a 6.56/216.34. He lost to Al Segrini in the final where a full track wheelstand slowed him to a 7.14/204.54 that lost to Al's 6.83/152. On July 25 he was at Maple Grove for it's All-American Series Funny Car race. It was a sixteen-car field and Liberman showed up using a aluminum motor for the first time. He had a close first-round race with Bob Parmer that had both drivers run 6.68 (JJ at 200.44), but Jim got the win light. It round two he lost to Ed McCulloch. As you can tell, JJ was frequently at Englishtown. He was there again on August 14 for its Race of Champions event. Unfortunately, he lost an engine in the first round, while racing Raymond Beadle. He made a stop at New England for the Eighth annual Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32-car show. Jim beat Sammy Miller in the first round, with a 6.54/212 and in round two he and Pee Wee Wallace both ran 6.58 (Jim at 212), but once again Liberman got there first. In round three, his 6.68/187 lost to eventual winner Bill Leavitt's 6.47/214. He was at Bristol in September for IHRA's All-American Nationals. Jim qualified on the pole with a 6.53 and in round two he beat Ron O'Donnell in the "Damn Yankee" with a 6.56. In the semifinals he lost to Smith. Maple Grove held its Funny Car Grand Finale in October and JJ won it. It was an eight-car field and Jim started his day by beating Crimmins in the "Swensen & Lani" Vega with a 6.67. A 6.52/201 in the semifinals beat a crossed-up Bob Lagana and in the final, he set Low ET with a 6.44 at 207.30 to win over Leavitt. Connecticut was also holding its Funny Car Finale in October and JJ was there, but his ailing 7.13/182.55 in the first round, lost to Joe Jacono's 6.73/205. As the season wound down, Jim was still able to score another victory by winning the Lakeland National Open in November. There he set Low ET in the final with a 6.71 at only 167.91 to win over Segrini's 6.97/191. |

Notes: Summernationals Champ one year, runner-up the other. Confirm photo is from 1974 or 1975 (note says 1974 at York). | Liberman started his '75 season at Fremont's New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. He didn't get very far as in the first round, his ailing 8.17 lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.48. Jim qualified #1 with a 6.30 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. He made it into the second round before smoking his tires and losing to Jim Dunn. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified fifth, but lost early. A 6.33 at Pomona qualified him seventh for the NHRA Winternationals and he beat Leroy Chadderton in the first round, before smoking his tires on a 7.11/166 loss to Mike Miller's 6.50/217. Qualified at 6.306/227.27 at Ontario Finals. Was that in the Vega or the Monza? |

Notes: Any look back at 70s Funny Cars has got to begin with "Jungle Jim" Liberman from West Chester, PA. One of the top all time crowd pleasers and showmen in drag racing, Jungle's demand was such that at one time he had to field 3 funny cars scattered all over the country to cover his bookings. While not remembered as a frequent national event winner the first "official" NHRA Funny Car win (69 Winternationals) was recorded by Clare Sanders driving JJ's #2 car. JJ's only NHRA national event victory came at the 75 Summernationals (although JJ did win numerous AHRA flopper shows). Super Stock & Drag Illustrated said of him "He never won a World Championship. He would often arrive late at booked-in races. He would give track owners heart failure. But he would fill the stands with fans from coast to coast. They adored the harmonica playing kid from Pennsylvania." |

Notes: Jungle Jim had a great 1976 season. He started in Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Jim was running the Monza, and a 6.44/224.67 qualified #1. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.78 lost to Shirl Greer's 6.69. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he was the second alternate with a 6.370/227.27 best. Jim ran really well at the Bakersfield March Meet, winning the event. An opening round 6.38/219 beat Tom McEwen, and in the semifinals, his 6.42/208 beat Jim Dunn. He beat Gordie Bonin in the final. Shortly after that, Jim was at OCIR for its Fox Hunt race. He qualified with a 6.63 and lasted until the second round before losing to Chris Lane. Jim ran 6.19 twice (at 233.16) at Fremont WCS in March en route to a runner-up finish to Don Prudhomme. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 mph Funny Car Championships. The third 200 mph FC Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim led the field with a 6.04, followed by Tom Hoover at a 6.08 and Bob Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Tom Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Later in April, Jim was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. There, he lasted until the semifinals before eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.26 beat his 6.55. Another victory came at the Dutch Classic held in May at Maple Grove. A final round 6.30/226.13 (track record speed) beat Dodger Glenn. Earlier, Jim had reset the track ET record to 6.29. At Atco Dragway for the CAR'S Magazine Championships, he lost to Pete Hill's 6.82/209 with an off-pace 7.56/197.36 in the first round. Jim qualified #5 at the NHRA Summernationals at 6.412/226.70. He lost in the first round to Gene Snow via redlight. That was Jim's last NHRA national event for the year. He also ran 6.21/229.59 at another Englishtown event. Jim ran 6.24/222.22 at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet late in the year. The times at Green Valley were widely disputed in the sport, but they came up on the boards. After Tom Prock's 5.974 in March at the second series event, NHRA intervened and demanded that none of the Green Valley five-second runs counted toward the Cragar Five-Second Club. Notes: This was Jungle's last car. Jungle died in a head-on collision with a bus on September 9, 1977, at age 32. Photo from Englishtown, late Summer 1977, courtesy "Berserko Bob" Doerrer. | Liberman was at OCIR's season opener in January. Unfortunately, the car went up in flames on a 7.99/110 in his first-round race against Jim Dunn, who won with a 7.03/177. JJ was ok. At Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, an easy 7.07 qualified #10 for the show. But in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.82 lost to John Collins' 6.60. His next stop was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 6.340/222.22 qualified #9, but he smoked the tires to a 7.865/209.79 in the first round, that lost to the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.07/225. He was scheduled to appear at Fremont for the East vs. West meet, but he failed to show. Jim attempted to qualify at Columbus and Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals and Summernationals. His 6.54 at Columbus was the 7th alternate, and his 6.55 at E-town was the 3rd alternate. Jim ran 6.31 at Fremont per Mike Gagnon. | I saw Jim at Seattle for the SIR 64 Funny Cars event. I think it was Jungle's last west coast appearance. - Joe Moore |
