Notes: Photo from 1978 US Nationals. Runner up at the Bakersfield March Meet. Ran a best of 5.94/231 at Indy 1978. Light started his season on a sour note when he failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Things were looking much better at the Bakersfield March Meet. He led early qualifying with a 5.90 and then returned to run 5.89/238.72 to show his dominance. Only a late afternoon blast of 5.85/239 by Don Garlits kept Graham from leading the 32-car field. Garlits banged a blower in the first round, and it sure looked like this race was Graham's to win. He made an easy pass in the opening round of eliminations when Bob Dell had problems. He set Low ET of round two with a 5.90/243.90 (Top Speed) that beat Dave Uyehara's 6.00/239 in one of the best races of the meet. In the third round, some of his thunder was stolen when Dennis Baca's 5.92 was tops for the round. Still, Light's 5.94/241.93 easily beat John Kimble's 6.08/232. Graham ran his best time of the weekend in the semifinals, using a 5.86/243.90 to beat Mike Reynolds' ailing car. He faced Baca in the final, and both had run similar times throughout eliminations. But Light smoked the tires badly coming off the line and shut down to 14.16/55.62 while the blower belt flew off of Baca's car, but he won the race with a 7.14/130. In May, Graham was at Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 opener. His 6.03/235.60 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, and a 6.06/233.76 beat Ernie Hall's 6.30/224 in round one. A 6.23/229.59 took out Jerry Olson's 6.68/214 in the semifinal. He faced Kelly Brown's strong running Donovan in the final. Kelly had set Low ET and Top Speed at this race. Graham was late off the line in the final, and his much better 6.15/238.09 lost to Brown's 6.26/211. |
