Notes: Had one of the few two-speed transmissions of this era. | Lee qualified on the "bump" at an eight-car show at Lions on February 9 with a 7.31. A first-round 7.34/213.27 lost to Mike Snively's 7.18/220 in the "Beaver Brothers" car. Joe was back at Lions for an eight-car show on April 12, but he qualified to qualify. He did run 220.04 in his non-qualifying pass. A sixteen-car show was run at OCIR on May 17. Joe beat Rick Ramsey in the first round, with a 7.01/196.06. He singled in the second round, but in the semifinal, his off pace 7.65/202 lost to Gary Cochran's 7.24/225. At the PDA Championships at OCIR in July, Joe qualified #22 in the 32-car field with a 7.09. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. A big win came on August 2 at Irwindale's second annual Gold Cup Championships. A first-round 7.14 beat James Warren's quicker 7.14. In the semifinals, a 6.97/212.76 beat Bobby Hightower and in the final, he soloed when Tom Ferraro lost oil pressure and shut off on the line. Abbott and Lee qualified #3 with a 7.00 in an eight-car show at Irwindale on August 23. A first-round 6.89/213.76 beat Frank Pedregon, but a second round 6.98 lost to Warren's 6.79. On August 30, Joe ran at Lions for the Drag News Nationals. In the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.67/211.76 beating Wayne King, but the run hurt the motor and he saw unable to run the second round. Joe won a Top Fuel show at Carlsbad the next day (August 31). On September 6, Lee was at Lions for another eight-car show. A first-round 6.78/218.44 beat the Caspary-Hampshire car, but a semifinal 6.80/216.86 lost to John Collins' 6.74/228 in Dave McKenzie's car. September 13 saw the Abbott and Lee car at an eight-car show at Irwindale where Joe ran a 7.15 to qualify #6. He hurt the engine on the run and was unable to continue. He was replaced in the field by alternate Pete Roger's "Bad Trip" car. Joe ran at Irwindale's big 32-car show for their Grand Prix race on October 4. Unfortunately, on his burnout for his first-round race against Ramsey, the rear end let go. He won an eight-car show at Lions on October 11. A first-round 6.86/214.28 beat Jim Dunn while a semifinal 6.70 (Low ET) at 214.79 beat a tire smoking Warren. In the final he met Ron Hampshire. The Caspary-Hampshire car had engine trouble and slowed to 9.71/93 while Lee ran 7.17/145.16 for the win. He qualified #1 with a 6.79 (Low ET) at an eight-car show at OCIR on October 25. He ran another 6.79 in the first round, to beat Don Prudhomme, but he smoked the tires in the semifinal and lost to Billy Tidwell's 7.02/216.

Joe had run a 7.54/208.33. In the semifinal, he caught another break when John Wiebe fouled. Joe again went 7.54/177.16. Notes: Lee started his season on January 7 at Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car show, and in the first round, he got crossed up and shut down to 10.46 in a loss to Mert Littlefield. Lee went to Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals, but unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the 32-car show. OCIR held an eight-car show in March, and Joe qualified #7 with a 7.04. A first-round 7.22/199.11 lost to Bill Leavitt's 7.04/189. He was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race, where his 7.47 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He shut down to 9.82/90.18 in the first round, losing to Leroy Chadderton driving the "Hawaiian." Next up was Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.72 and improved to a 6.70/208.33 over Paula Murphy in the first round. Unfortunately, he was shut off on the line with an oil leak in the second round. His next stop was at Muncie for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #6 with a 7.10 and lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.93/204.54 fell to eventual winner Jim Paoli's 6.72/209. He then scored a victory at the OCIR Hang Ten race. Joe qualified #2 with a 6.72 and a final round 6.68/214.28 beat Pat Foster's tire-smoking 8.43/108.43 in the Barry Setzer Vega. Runner up to Mert Littlefield at Irwindale 8/04/73 at 6.86/209.30.

Notes: Lee was at Irwindale on January 12 for its Grand Premiere race. He qualified #12, and in the opening round, his 7.29 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.64. Joe's 6.96 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. That was a pretty good showing considering that the likes of Sush, Matsubara, Pat Foster, and Dale Emery, among others, failed to qualify. He picked up to a 6.84 in the opening round, but it was not enough as Tom Hoover beat him with a 6.79. On April 6, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. Lee lasted until the second round before losing to Bob Pickett in the "Lil Demon." At the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships, he beat Pickett in the first round, with a 6.75/206.89, but in round two, he lost to Pat Foster driving John Lombardo's Vega.
