Notes: Lepone qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.90/172.41. An opening round 8.03/168.66 beat Harold Denton, but he lost soon after. At the rain postponed NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, a 7.98/168.85 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. He failed to reach the finals. The next stop for the Jenkins team was at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and his 7.96 qualified #5, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Lee Shepherd. He lost that race. At the NHRA Springnationals, the Camaro's performance was off. An 8.02/168.85 qualified #14 and an off pace 8.13 in the opening round lost to Don Coonce's 8.10. The team then went to Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Joe qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 7.96/170.45. In the first round, his 8.06/167.91 beat Joe Anderson, but he slept on the line in the semifinals, and his 8.04 lost to Andy Mannarino's 8.08. Joe qualified 14th at Indy 82 at 7.953/173.41. | The team finished 5th in NHRA points in 1982. | The way Lepone ran up the R's a second before taking off at the '82 Finals was cool. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Lepone could not run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals as "Grumpy's" new car wasn't ready. Joe qualified #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.73/177.16. A first-round 7.72/176.81 beat John Brumley's 7.92/174, but his 7.79/176.42 lost to eventual winner Lee Shepherd's 7.70/180 in the second round. The next NHRA race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, where the PRO fields were eight-car fields. Lepone had no trouble, running 7.82/174.41 for the #3 spot in the show. A 7.87/172.08 in the first round beat Johnny Dowey's 7.95/173. He got out on Reid Whisnant in the semifinal, and his 7.90/173.07 held on to win over the Mopar's 7.88/175. In the final, he ran Shepherd. Joe pushed the 'tree a little too hard and fouled, handing the win to Lee. Joe shut down to a 9.02. On May 1, he won the US Manufacturer's Championships at Maple Grove. He qualified second for the eight-car show with a 7.89. He made three 7.90 passes to win the race. He beat Wally Balchunas and Bob Harris before beating Ronnie Manchester's 7.98/170 in the final for the title. Lepone's final round times were 7.90/171.10. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car field; unfortunately, his 7.84/174.41 qualified #5. That was bad as it set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Warren Johnson. In the opening round, WJ's 7.75/177 beat Joe's 7.92/174.41. NHRA's next race was the Springnationals at Columbus. A 7.87/174.41 qualified #7. In the opening round, his 7.94/172.74 defeated Mark Yuill's 8.00/172. In round two, his 7.94/173.45 fell to Frank Iaconio's 7.84/173. He also qualified #7 at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but he didn't stick around long as he lost to eventual winner Shepherd in the first round. Early in P/S, Englishtown was a race where Bill Jenkins or his driver, Larry Lombardo, ran really well. The magic had gone away by the '80s, and in '83, things weren't any better. Joe qualified #9 with a 7.90/175.09 at the Summernationals, but in the opening round, Iaconio's 7.76/178 put his 7.89/175.43 on the trailer. Joe's best NHRA national event times came at the World Finals at OCIR at 7.662/180.00, where he went to the semis. Did he run 180.72 somewhere this year? Photo from Brainerd 1983. |

He beat Sam Carroll in the opening round, 7.82/177 to 7.89 (foul), before losing a close one to Bob Glidden in round two, 7.82/174 to 7.85/177. He continued to qualify well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 7.744/179.28 qualified #9. The only problem with that is that it set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Lee Shepherd. Joe must have been a little nervous as he fouled away a 7.91 while Shepherd ran 7.72 to advance. Atlanta was the next stop for the team for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, Joe got the car qualified, running 7.854/177.16 for the #11 spot. In the first round of competition, his opponent, Don Coonce, broke, and Joe ran 7.89/176 to advance. But in round two, Glidden had his number, and Bob's 7.74/178 beat Lepone's 7.85/176. Qualifying wasn't too bad at Baton Rouge as only 20 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Joe ran 7.825/178.57 for the #11 spot. But in round one, his 7.93/177 lost to the eventual winner Shepherd's 7.76/181. Joe qualified #9 again at Columbus with a 7.849/176.12, and WJ got him again in round one, 7.76/180 to 7.96/174. The team qualified #9 yet again in Quebec (7.765/178.92), and again, WJ won round one when Joe gambled and lost with a redlighting 8.04. The team qualified #12 at Englishtown with a 7.780/180.36. They upset DOn Coonce in round one, 7.79/177 to 7.94/163, and beat Gordie Rivera in round two, 7.80/176 to Gordie's redlight-initiated 7.84. Joe got the holeshot on Lee Shepherd in the semis, but the Reher-Morrison team came around him on the top end to take a 7.80/177 to 7.87/176 win. Joe qualified #3 at Denver with an 8.110/168.85. He made it to the semis with wins over Gordie Rivera and Rich Marino. But again, he faced Lee Shepherd and lost another close one, 8.12/168 to 8.19/171. They qualified #10 at Brainerd at 7.850/175.78, which put them up against nemesis Lee Shepherd (but in round one). Shepherd won, 7.80/176 to 7.85/176. At Indy, the Palmer Bros. Team broke into the top half of the field again, hissing 7.742/181.81 for #7. But Ken Dondero grabbed a holeshot win in round one, 7.82/180, to their 7.798/177. They raced at the World Finals to wrap up their NHRA tour. Joe ran 7.789/177.86 to grab the #11 spot. That put him up against - you guessed it - Lee Shepherd in round one. Again, close was no cigar, as Shepherd took the 7.71/178 to 7.79/177 win. A solid year for the team. Lepone finished eighth in NHRA's season-long points chase. Did Joe run 7.72 away from the NHRA tour? |

Notes: Joe qualified #1 at Pomona for the Winternationals at 7.528/182.55, but a first-round 7.67/177.86 lost to Dempsey Hardy's 7.63/175. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #10 and lost to Don Campanello in the first round. A 7.61/181.37 qualified #6 at Atlanta (with new paint) for the Southern Nationals. He beat Joe Sway in the first round but lost to Bob Glidden in the second frame. He ran well at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals, qualifying #3 with a 7.58/181.56. He beat Frank Iaconio in the first round and soloed in round two with a 7.59/178.74 when Gordie Rivera failed to show. In the semifinal, he faced Warren Johnson, and despite running 7.62/178.64, he lost to WJ's 7.60/180. He again qualified #3 (7.58/181.30) at the next event, the Springnationals in June. And once again, he made it to the semifinals. He started his march by beating Kenny Delco's 7.80/174 with a 7.70/180.36. A 7.63/181.41 beat Hardy's 7.79/173 in round two. In the semifinal, he lost to Johnson (again), with his 7.67/184.53 losing to WJ's 7.61/183. Lepone got a win over an eight-car field at the Super Stock Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.57/182.55 and beat Charlie Garrett in the first round. A 7.66/181.08 beat Delco's 7.76/177 in the semis. He faced Joe Clark in the final, whose Camaro was a tenth off Lepone's pace. Sure enough, Clark gambled on the tree and lost, giving Joe an easy 7.62/181.08 run for the victory. For the third NHRA race in a row, Joe qualified #3 (7.58/182.11) at the Grandnationals in Canada. | Joe qualified #8 at the NHRA US Nationals with a 7.543/185.91. Lepone lost in Round 1 to #16 qualifier Mark Pawuk. |

Notes: Joe drove the Beretta and the Giddings & Wells Camaro in 1987. Definitely drove the Camaro at Ennis Spring, but assuming he ran the Beretta everywhere else. Once this is verified, check DragStats to assign best times to the right car. 236 IHRA. The Drag Racing List, Winter 87/88, Volume 2, Number 9 had 188.28, but the best times for the year on the NHRA trail were 7.403/187.42. Ran 7.682/182.22 at NHRA Grandnational Molson 1987. |

Notes: 236 IHRA. Joe's new Beretta wasn't ready for this race, so he borrowed Tom Wright's Camaro and put his driveline into it. He qualified #11 with a 7.52/182.66, and in the first round, he beat Gary Brown. In the second round, his 7.58/180 lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.59/180. Car was sold to Carlos Gonzales in 1988. |

Notes: Joe was still driving the Camaro at the NHRA Grandnationals. His 7.43/184.95 qualified #7, but he lost to Morris Johnson Jr. in round one, 7.46/184 to 7.653/181.78. He lost to Morris Johnson Jr. in the opening round. 236 IHRA. Formerly listed 7.57/182.92 for this car. We need to validate which races Joe ran with which car: his Beretta, his Camaro, the Jerry Haas Camaro, and this car. |

Notes: Joe Lepone drove the 'Jerry Haas' Camaro at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. We need to confirm it was this car. Joe qualified #14 at 7.499/184.78 and won his first-round match with Harry Scribner on a massive holeshot, 7.517/183.71 to 7.453/186.14. He lost to larry Morgan in round two, 7.54/184 to 7.596/183.33. This year, Joe drove this car, the E-Z Wider Beretta and Camaro, and the Giddings & Wells Camaro. We need to know at which event each car was run. |

Notes: Photo from 1990 Grandnationals, Montreal. | Joe started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 7.31/187.65. Unfortunately, he slept in the first round, against Rickie Smith and Smith's 7.43/186 beat his quicker 7.35/187.50. At the Arizona Nationals, he ran 7.35/186.76 to qualify #10. In round one both he and Gordie Rivera ran 7.35's, but Rivera got the win. At the third race of the season, the Supernationals at Houston, a 7.32/187.22 qualified #12. But in the first round, he fouled away a 7.36/186.45 against Jerry Eckman. Later that month (March), he was at the Gatornationals where a 7.39/187.72 qualified #14. He lost to Bruce Allen in the first round. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. Joe qualified #4 with a 7.26/188.87 and in the first round, he beat Jim Yates. In the second round, he lost to Mark Pawuk. Joe was running really well, qualifying at all the shows, but he was having a hard time getting past the second round. Just qualifying for these fields was tough. Things went the same at Memphis for the Mid South Nationals. He lasted until round two before losing to Darrell Alderman. At the seventh event of the season, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Joe qualified #10 with a 7.37/187.85. This time he lost to Bob Glidden in round one. At the Springnationals in June, he lost to Smith in round two. In Canada for the Grandnationals, he continued to qualify well running a 7.35 for the #5 spot in the field. He lost to Pawuk in round one. Pawuk got him again at the next race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. This time it was in round two. In Denver for the Mile High Nationals, he stayed true to form. He qualified #10 with a 7.83/175.57. He beat Eckman in round one, before losing to Larry Morgan's 7.79 in round two with a 7.88. The California Nationals at Sonoma was the next race. A 7.33/189.67 qualified #9, but he lost to Alderman in the first round. He lost in the first round, at Seattle for the Northwest Nationals. A 7.41/186.29 lost to Morgan's 7.38/186. Race number fourteen of the season was the Northstar Nationals. Joe qualified #10 with a 7.41/184.04, but lost to eventual winner Allen in the first round. At the US Nationals at Indy, Lepone finally got past the second round. He qualified #9 with a 7.39. He lasted until the semifinals where he fouled away a 7.36 against Eckman's 7.46. |

Despite running a strong 7.19/193.46 in the first round, he still lost to Bob Glidden, who beat him with a 7.12/194. A 7.18/192.06 qualified #5 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. But once again, he had trouble getting past that first round. Smith got him with a 7.27/189, dropping his 7.32/190.19.
