Notes: Injected fuel. Ran car on alky at times too. This is the car he ran late in 1965. Later in 1966, he sold the car to Jim Lovett and Winston Lane. Loehr had purchased the Dick Brannan-Hubert Platt long-nosed 1966 Mustang, and finished 1966 and part of 1967 with it. Lovett & Lane ran this pictured car as an A/FC on the UDRA circuit in 1967. Was stll called "Stampede." - DD |

Notes: Injected fuel 427 Cammer, C-6 trans by Art Carr-124" Race Car Specialties chassis, Cal Automotive body. Car was built for Hubert Platt in 1966, finished shortly before he was asked to take over Dick Brannan's new Holman-Moody long-nose Mustang. Sponsor said he couldn't run both. Platt drove his RCS car once before selling it to Loehr. The chassis, sans body, was featured on the cover and 2-page feature of the 10-66 Hot Rod Parts Illustrated. Entire car featured in 5/67 Popular Hot Rodding. - RT | Loehr started 1966 in the 1965 Mustang coupe he ran in 1965. Raced the stretched '66 car through 1967. Notes: Still running the former Hubert Platt RCS-chassis '66 car with injected Ford Cammer power. Feature on car (still with Cammer) in 5/67 Popular Hot Rodding. - RT | I don't think this car ever had the early Hemi in it, as Dick had a new Mustang built for '68 and he debuted it late in '67. That '68 Mustang ran the Hemi and it ran the last few races of '67. Super Stock, March '68 has an article on the car including a cutaway showing chassis detail. This '67 car was Dick's third Mustang Funny Car since '65. His major sponsor was Max Curtis Ford, a Lansing, Michigan, dealer. Race Car Specialties built the 124" chassis. Cal Automotive manufactured the fiberglass body. The 427 SOHC engine was built by John Skiba. The bore was stock, but a Crankshaft Company 3/8" stroker crank gave the "Cammer" 468 cubic inch The rods were M/T and were intended for the Chrysler Hemi, but the crank was turned to accept these rods. Forgedtrue 10.8:1 pistons were used. Skiba also polished the heads. Twin Crane 612-A cams were used. The 85% nitro was fed to the engine by Hilborn injectors. Horsepower was estimated to be about 900. Art Carr modified the C-6 automatic transmission and it transferred the power back to a 3.89 rear end. Overall weight was just 1,950 lbs. The bright orange paint was sprayed on by the Alexander Brothers. | The car’s first time out came at Phoenix for the AHRA Winternationals where Loehr was having rear suspension problems and lost to Charlie Allen in the second round of the 2400 lb. Funny Car class when he lost traction and smoked the tires. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Dick made it into the final of A/XS only to have a rod let go. He finished runner-up to Hubert Platt. Still, his early season runs produced a best of 8.45/166. He was at Indy with the SOHC. Dick qualified it with an 8.29, but lost to Jack Chrisman in the first round. |

Notes: B&N '68 Mustang fiberglass body on a 124" Racing Enterprises (of Lansing, Michigan) chassis. Stock displacement 392 hemi, TorqueFlite trans by Art Carr. The car was the subject of a cover feature in 3/68 SS&DI and also a 6-page feature in 4/68 Drag Strip. Said to have been completed in 90 days. Probably debuted late in the season. - RT | Dick Loehr was one of many funny car drivers based out of Michigan. An engineer by trade, Dick used his job connections to get sponsorship and assistance for his racing operations. In 1967, Loehr had a new Mustang funny car built. The Max Curtis Ford "Stampede" was much lower than most of its competition. That car debuted with a 427 SOHC engine, which a reliable 392 Chrysler Hemi later replaced. Loehr ran a best of 7.86 at 189.70 with the car at Orange County. The car was replaced by a new, lighter Mustang in 1969. Dick Loehr eventually left funny cars for Pro Stockers. - BS | Confirmed 7.95 and 8.08 at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on 11/25/67. - BM |

Notes: Dick Loehr was one of many funny car drivers based out of Michigan. An engineer by trade, Dick used his job connections to get sponsorship and assistance for his racing operations. That car debuted with a 427 SOHC engine, later replaced by a reliable 392 Chrysler Hemi, Torqueflite combination. Loehr ran a best of 7.86 at 189.70 with the car at Orange County. The car was replaced by a new, lighter Mustang in 1969. Dick Loehr eventually left funny cars for Pro Stockers. - BS | Dick started the season on New Year's Day at Irwindale, where an 8.40 qualified tenth in the sixteen-car field. He ran a first-round 8.18/180 but lost to Don Nicholson's 7.99/172. At OCIR on January 14 for an eight-car show, he qualified seventh with an 8.29/177.86, but Terry Hedrick's first-round 8.28/182 beat his 8.43/168.22. On January 28 at Lions for the AHRA Winter meet, he qualified third with a 7.79/178.92 and ran another 7.79/176.12 over Mike Burkhart in the first round. A second-round 7.92/179.78 beat Kelly Chadwick's 8.44/162. He had an easy third-round win before meeting Don Nicholson in the semifinal. Both cars lost transmissions, but Don coasted across the line first. Shortly after that (February 4), he went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. NHRA did not have a Funny Car class at this time, so the cars had to qualify for Super Eliminator. Unfortunately, Loehr failed to qualify. On February 25, Loehr singled in the opening round with an 8.98/141 when Jack Chrisman had injector problems at the South Coast Funny Car Championships. An 8.14/169.17 beat a tire-smoking Clare Sanders in the second round. In the semifinal, he broke on the line against Roger Lindamood. On March 3, Irwindale held a sixteen-car show, and Dick's 8.21/180.72 qualified seventh. He lost a blower belt and the race in the first round when Fred Goeske's 8.03/182.18 beat his 8.23/153.74. A big win came at Riverside on March 24 for the HRM Championships. On April 13, Loehr was at OCIR for an eighteen-car show. All cars were to run the first round, with the eight lowest ETs advancing into round two. Dick's 8.30/175.78 beat Joe Pisano and advanced into round two. His opponent, Steve Bovan, broke, so he soloed with a 10.62. He faced Goeske in the semifinals. An 8.04/182.54 finished second best to Fred's 7.93/179. Another win came at OCIR for their Funny Car Team Championships on May 4. He ran as good as a first-round 7.86/188.66 before winning the final when Charlie Allen broke a rear end. He failed to win on May 10 at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships, but he set Top Speed at 185.16. He was at Detroit Dragway on June 28 for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships, but an off-pace 9.90/132.35 lost to Pat Minick's 8.12/172 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Cecil County in July for the CARS All-Star International meet, Dick ran a first-round 7.79/179.28 over Dick Bourgeois' 8.38 and went on to win the final Saturday with a 7.86/182.54 over Frank Federici's 8.25/181. He was at an eight-car show in Gary, Indiana, on July 30. He ran 7.80/188 (Top Speed) in the opening round of eliminations to beat Pat Minick's 7.99/182 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, his 7.77/185.71 beat Ed Schartman's 7.92/160. He faced Don Schumacher in the final, and another strong 7.76/175.47 gave Dick the title over Don's 7.97/183. On September 1 at Minnesota Dragways for an eight-car event, Dick lost to Tommy Grove in the first round, Tom's 7.62/191.88 over Dick's (8.02/175.43). Another win came on October 5 at the Irwindale Grand Prix. On November 16, Irwindale held a Ford vs. Mopar Championships, and Loehr's first-round 8.08/177.86 beat Larry Reyes' 8.10/181.08. A second-round 7.87/188.67 beat Fred Goeske's 7.99/182.18. He lost his third race to Dave Beebe's 8.36/185.33 when he got up on two wheels and shut down to a 13.47. He won two of his races at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on December 1, running a best of 7.95/179.28 over Goeske. |

Notes: Loehr ran this car, his fourth and last Mustang funny, for a year before selling it to Bob Veselka (Corpus Christi, Tex.). Veselka ran it for a few months in 1970 as the "Going Texas Mustang." Like many funny car pilots, Loehr abandoned floppers and moved to Pro Stocks in 1970. - RT | After running a 392 Hemi-powered Mustang with great success in '68, it was a little surprising that Dick went back to the temperamental SOHC Ford engine for '69. It almost paid off, as near the end of the season, he had one of the strongest funny cars in the nation when it was running right. The Chapman-built 125" wheelbase chassis was unusual as it was built so that Dick could relocate the engine forward or backward in the frame. A hydraulic cylinder did this. This could be done right from the driver's seat while staging the car. The idea was to aid in weight transfer depending on the traction at the strip on which he was racing. The driveshaft was splined to fit all engine locations. The SOHC engine used M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. Crew Chief John Skiba ported and polished the steel heads, and a pair of Isky 650 cams were used. Skiba also prepared the blower. A Hilborn injector fed the 68% nitro mix to the engine. Fiberglass Ltd. made the Mustang body, and the whole car weighed 1,800 lbs. | Dick qualified at the March Meet at Bakersfield and beat Larry Christopherson's Nova in the first round, with a 7.90/188.67. He broke in the semifinal, however, letting Rich Siroonian single into the final. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify at the HRM Championships. He also failed to qualify on March 22 for an eight-car show at Lions. In April, Loehr was in Connecticut for a best-of-three match against Frank Federici in the "Shark" Corvette. The Mustang was having bad handling problems, and he lost two straight. He was still ironing out the bugs in his car when he was paired up against Jim Liberman for a match race at Aquasco on April 20. Liberman beat him two straight for the match race win. He had a rematch against JJ on May 14 at US 131 Martin, Mich. Jim's 7.80/188 won the first race when Dick fouled away a 7.86/189.06. Dick won the next two races to win the match with runs of 7.72/186.72 and 7.77/185.94 over Liberman's 7.95/189 and 7.76/188. He lost in the first round, on May 16 at the UDRA race at Union Grove, when Clare Sanders beat him in Liberman's second car. On May 29, back at US 131 in Martin, Mich., for another UDRA race, Loehr got sideways in the first round and lost to Pat Minick's 7.72/184. At St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 1, they held a four-car race with the winner being decided by the number of rounds won. Dick won his first race with a 7.75/184.80 over Clare Sanders' 7.91/184. He got crossed up and shut down to an 11.09 to lose to Terry Hedrick's track record 7.56 at 192.70. In his third race, a 7.59/193.54 beat Don Schumacher's out-of-shape run. Hedrick was declared the winner for winning three rounds, while Loehr had won two and was runner-up. He went to Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals and bagged a win, running a first-round 7.61 and a second-round 7.71 over Fritz Callier. In the final, a 7.72 beat Roger Lindamood for the title. A 7.82/196.07 qualified him fifth for the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, but Callier's 8.03/172 beat Loehr in the first round. This was followed by another win on July 3 at US 131 at Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race where he set a 7.36 track record and Top Speed of the meet at 202.78. The next day (July 4), he won another UDRA race at Cordova, setting another track record at 7.41. On July 6, a match race was run at Milan against Lindamood. Roger won the first race with a track record 7.41/200.44 over Dick. At the PHR Championships, a 7.67/189.47 beat Hank Clark's Rebel in the first round. In round two, he advanced when Tom McEwen broke. But in the semis, a 7.49/202 by Minick beat Dick's 7.54/191.48. At New York on August 17 for the AHRA Nationals, Dick Harrell ran a 7.48/200 in round two to stop Loehr's 7.68/190. He ran a 7.35/200.44 at the US Nationals to qualify fifth, but he slept on the line in the first round and lost to Jack Chrisman's 7.66 with a tenth quicker 7.56. An early '70 issue of National Dragster had an article on Loehr, which mentioned that he had run a best of 7.20/205 in this car. Best NHRA national event times of 7.354/200.44 at Indy. Notes: Loehr was the top qualified Ford at the NHRA Winternationals when he ran a 10.36/133.92 to qualify #12. He lost early in eliminations. On February 15 for the NHRA Gatornationals, he again led the Ford runners with a 10.12 that qualified #9. In the first round, he repeated that number but lost to low qualifier Ronnie Sox's 9.94. Loehr was at Donnybrook International on July 26 for the fourth NHRA Division 5 race. In the opening round, his 10.56/132.93 beat Bill Hielscher. In the semifinal, his 10.45/132.72 fell to Dick Oldfield's 10.11/136. Ran 10.080/136.98 at Indy to qualify #13. Steve Hubler surprised him in round one, with a 10.22 to 10.17 holeshot upset. |
