Notes: 1976 NHRA Pro Stock World Champion. Ran 8.71 (National Record) at Gainesville 3/76, 8.68 (National Record) at Englishtown 7/76. |Larry Lombardo drove Bill Jenkins' Monza at NHRA events. He did not race it at any IHRA or AHRA sanctioned events as Ken Dondero drove Jenkins' other car in AHRA competition and they did not compete in IHRA. Larry started the season at the Phoenix Winter Classic in January It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #4 with an 8.92. Lombardo improved to the meet's best numbers for Pro Stock at 8.78/155.17. He stopped Wayne Gapp in the semifinals and faced Richie Zul in the final. An 8.80/154.37 got him the victory over Zul's 8.94/153. At Pomona, car owner Bill Jenkins jumped back behind the wheel, but at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Larry took over. There he qualified #1 with an 8.73 and in the first round, he beat Don Nicholson. His opponent, Shelby Jester, fouled against him in round two and Larry advanced with an 8.81/153.84. In the semifinals, he beat Bob Glidden's 8.83 Pinto effort with an 8.74/155.70. This put him into the final against Warren Johnson who was competing in only his eighth NHRA national event. Larry's final round 8.71/155.70 reset the NHRA ET record and got the win over Johnson's big block Camaro at 8.76/156. Another win came at the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown. There his final round 8.74/155 stopped Zul's 8.83/154 for the victory. Larry also won the next NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga as well. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.93 qualified #6 and in round one, his 9.06/154.37 beat Tom Michalek, but in round two an 8.94/155.97 lost to Johnson's 8.87/153. A week later (June 20), he won the Division 1 race at Maple Grove where a final round 8.76/154.10 beat Dave Kanners' 8.82/155. Best times in the final of the Sanair event at 8.590/157.89. |

Notes: Larry Lombardo was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals in January. He qualified #1 with an 8.88, and in the first round, he soloed with an 8.92/153.84 (Top Speed). In round two, his 8.84/153.58 beat former Jenkins team driver Ken Dondero's 9.10/151. He got his first "real" race in the semifinals when Lombardo's 8.86/153.06 beat Lee Hunter's quicker 8.84/150. Larry faced Warren Johnson in the final, and he improved to 8.82 (Low ET) at 153.52 to win over Johnson's 8.99/153. It was an excellent way to start the year, but it got even better the following week at Pomona. An 8.72/159.01 qualified #2 behind Don Nicholson's 8.70/158. These two would work their way into the final. Larry set a new NHRA speed record in the opening round with his 8.74/159.29 that beat Hunter. In the final, "Dyno" fouled, running 8.77/157, while Lombardo set Low ET at 8.610/158.73 while winning his second big race of the year. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Larry qualified #3 with an 8.79 behind Nicholson and Wally Booth. A first-round 8.83 beat Andy Mannarino and an 8.75 in round two stopped Johnson's 8.93. But in the semifinals, Nicholson got some "revenge" from Pomona as Larry ran a tenth slower than "Dyno." He took and chance on the tree and fouled. The team then went to Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 with an 8.89/155.17. He easily made it into the final, where he faced Dondero in the "Gapp and Roush" Pinto. An 8.82 got the victory over Dondero's 9.00. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 opener on May 8. Lombardo's 8.64 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Iaconio's 8.59. These two would meet in the final, with Frank taking the win. The two switched roles at the next NHRA Division 2 race at Cayuga on May 22. There Lombardo picked up another victory. They could not race at Baton Rouge for the rain-delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals as it conflicted with the AHRA Gateway Nationals. At St. Louis, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.77/155.98 in qualifying #1. Once again, he easily made it into the final to face Dondero again. Larry ran an easy 8.87/138.89 to win over the Ford driver's 9.35/145. At the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.68/157.06 qualified #2 behind Wally Booth's AMC at 8.64/155. An opening round 8.79/155.44 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.92/153. But in round two, his 8.81/153.84 lost to Iaconio's 8.76/154. Another win came at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals on July 3. Larry set Low ET in qualifying at 8.83. He ran times of 8.92 and 8.90 to reach the final. Another 8.83/155.60 (Top Speed) won over Bobby Marriott. Don Campanello lost to Larry in the final at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maryland International. Back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Lombardo ran 8.75/156.79 to qualify #5. He improved to 8.62/159.01 (Top Speed) in the opening round to beat Roy Hill. In round two, his 8.66/156 beat low qualifier Bob Glidden. Another 8.66/158 beat Andy Mannarino in the semifinal. He faced Iaconio in the final, and Larry took the victory with an 8.68/158.73 to beat Frank's close 8.68/156. He also stopped Iaconio in the final at the fourth NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on July 23. Lombardo qualified #1 and set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.58/157.89. A final round of 8.62/157.61 got him the win. Shortly after this(July 31), "Team Jenkins" was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. Lombardo set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with an 8.71/160.42. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 8.83/156.29, and another 8.83 at 159.01 in the semifinals beat Rich Smith's 9.30/149. He faced Dondero. But the Monza broke and slowed to 19.87/39.07 while Ken got the win with an 8.92/153. Breakage also came into play in the final at the NHRA Grandnationals. Larry qualified #4 with an 8.70/156.79. An opening round 8.75/154.90 took out Andy Mannarino's 8.92/151. A great 8.62/156.52 in the semifinal beat Warren Johnson's 8.80/154 and gave him lane choice over Glidden. However, the car broke, and Bob ran 8.63/156 for the win while Larry rolled across the line at 10.12/93.55. Larry won the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown over Frank Iaconio. He was runner-up to Bob Glidden at Sanair and made it to the semis at Indy (in Ronnie Manchester's car). Won NHRA Winternationals. Won NHRA Phoenix Winter Open over Richie Zul at 8.80/154.37. Larry ran 8.610 at Pomona, 8.75 at Gainesville, 8.68 at Columbus, 8.62 at Englishtown. Did Larry run 8.525 in this car this year (at a Divisional event, perhaps)? Removed that ET until we get confirmation. |

Notes: Entering into the '78 season, Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Monza, was still the Chevy to beat in Pro Stock competition. But that changed during this season with Frank Iaconio and Lee Shepherd pushing hard to displace Jenkins' car for the #1 Chevy spot. Larry started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and all qualified cars were Chevys. Larry ran 8.93/152 to qualify #4, and he lasted until the semifinals before his 9.01/146.37 lost to eventual winner Kevin Rotty's 8.99/150. The Jenkins team figured that they ran far better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. They didn't. In fact, Jenkins waived his points at this race because of Lombardo's poor qualifying position (#12 at 8.83/154). But Lombardo made up the difference with his driving ability. In the opening round, his quick-leaving 8.80/154 beat Sonny Bryant's quicker 8.77/152. A second-round 8.76/154.63 beat Mark Yuill's 8.83/153, and in the semifinals, he stopped Gordie Rivera's 8.82/155 with an 8.77/153.84. I'm sure that Bill would have gladly kept his points by now. But he still had to face Bob Glidden's low qualifying Pinto in the final. Bob was the only car to run 8.5s at Pomona, and his slowest run in eliminations was his semifinal 8.69, so Larry knew he had to be sharp in the final. Both left together, and Glidden's 8.67/156 gave Larry's 8.78/155.70 the runner-up position. Shortly after that, he went to Phoenix for the Winter Championships, where although there were two Chevys in the final, Jenkins' car was not one of them. The next NHRA race was the NHRA Gatornationals. This is the race where Iaconio won his first NHRA event and started pushing Lombardo for the #1 Chevy Pro Stock title. Larry qualified #4 with an 8.64/155 behind Glidden, Iaconio, and Rotty (in that order). A first-round 8.72/156 beat Richie Zul's 8.82/155, and in round two, Larry's 8.68/156.79 beat Rivera at 8.86/155. But in the semifinals, the two Monzas of Iaconio and Lombardo lined up, and Frank outright beat Larry's 8.70/155 with an 8.68/155. To make matters worse, the following week (March 19), Larry made it into the final at the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace only to lose to another Chevy upstart, Lee Shepherd. The final round times were 8.61/160.71 to 8.73/149.35. Lee had topped 160 on three consecutive runs. Team Jenkins was now falling behind. They weren't yet overly concerned but perhaps became so after failing to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals eight-car show. At this time, they laid off racing at any more AHRA events, using the extra time to develop more power, and it paid off. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown, the team won over Iaconio, who broke in the final. Even more astonishing was the Low ET time slip Larry was given: an 8.44. The speed was not given, but Zul had Top Speed at 159, and to run 8.44, it was thought the car would have had to do more than 160. Lombardo never ran anywhere near that time again at legal NHRA weight. True or a figment? The next Division 1 final at Cayuga came down to Iaconio and Lombardo again with the same results. Larry's 8.59/157.89 (Low ET and Top Speed) stopped Iaconio's 8.61/157 for the money. The next event was the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. Larry qualified #8 with an 8.74/158.45 (Top Speed). But he was upset in the first round, when Bobby Yowell's 8.85/154 nipped his 8.86/156.79 to the finish line. The third NHRA Division 1 race saw another Iaconio-Lombardo Pro Stock final, and Lombardo now made it three straight with a final 8.61/156.25 that covered Frank's 8.68/155. The fourth NHRA Division 1 race was held at Maple Grove, and this time, Lombardo faced a different challenger in the final. It was Division 4 regular Lee Shepherd. Lombardo got a good light, and his 8.76/154.63 held on to win over Lee's quicker 8.72/153. Earlier, Larry had set both Low ET and Top Speed at 8.62/156.25. It didn't matter who was driving for Jenkins, but his cars always did well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. 1978 was no different. Although he only qualified #4 with an 8.66/155.97, Larry managed to make his way into the final. He improved to 8.65/155.70 in the first round, to beat Don Nicholson's new Fairmont at 8.75/153. A second-round 8.64/156.52 beat Andy Mannarino's AMC at 8.79/153, and he improved even more in the semifinals, where an 8.63/155.77 stopped Joe Satmary's 8.69/155. The only trouble was, Glidden also debuted a new Fairmont and was running 8.5s at will. The final was a foregone conclusion, with Bob's 8.55/154 winning easily over Lombardo's 8.71/155.17. These two would also meet in the final at the NHRA Grandnationals run in Canada. Only seven cars showed for the eight-car field, and Larry's 8.66 got him the #4 spot. He beat James Cook in the opening round with an 8.79, and a semifinal 8.66/155.44 took out Dempsey Hardy's 8.76/154. Once again, Bob made it look easy, he even pulled the 'chute way early, and his 8.55/144 beat Lombardo handily at 8.72/155.17 (Top Speed). Photo from 1977. |

Notes: Larry qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.71/158.73. Richie Zul fouled against him in the first round, and his 8.85 advanced. Larry faced a low qualifier in round two, Bob Glidden and his new Arrow. Lombardo's 8.70/156.52 was no match for Glidden's 8.50 at only 144. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.58/157.06 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 8.52. In the first round, Dempsey Hardy fouled against Larry's 8.64/154.37, but he lost a close one to Ronnie Sox in round two. Lombardo's 8.62/156.79 lost to Sox's 8.61/155. A runner-up finish to Frank Iaconio came at the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown. The "Jenkins" team did not run at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as rain postponed it. Another runner-up finish came at the NHRA Springnationals. Larry qualified #2 behind Glidden's Arrow with an 8.62 at a track record speed of 159.85. An 8.76/155.70 beat Wally Booth's 8.86/153, and in round two, his 8.72/155.44 advanced when Warren Johnson fouled. It was just like the old days in the semifinals when "Grumpy's Toy" was matched against "Dyno Don" Nicholson. This time Lombardo's 8.72/154.90 won over Nicholson's 8.89/149. This put Larry in the final against Glidden. Bob was pretty much unbeatable at this stage, and his 8.61/157 got the win over the Camaro's 8.76/151.51. Shortly after that (June 24), Lombardo picked up another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maryland International. His final round 8.65/156.25 lost to Iaconio's 8.64/154. The Jenkins team did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Considering how well "Grumpy" always did at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, the '79 event was a let-down for the team. Larry ran well in qualifying, hitting an 8.60, which was good enough for the third spot in the field. He defeated Roy Hill in the opening round, but the engine broke a pushrod in the second round, and he lost to Nicholson. Most of the Pro Stock teams then went to nearby Maryland International for its annual U.S. Open Pro Stock Championships. Lombardo was no exception. It was a sixteen-car show, and in round one, Larry's 8.77 beat Tom Gray. In round two, sneaky ol' "Dyno" got him again; this time, the Ford driver's 8.70 took out Lombardo's 8.80. That was followed by a big win at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Larry qualified #3 with an 8.71/153.58. He picked it up to 8.68/154 in the semifinal to beat low qualifier Joe Satmary's 8.74/156. He faced the strong AMC of Booth in the final. The two had a good race, but the Camaro was strong, and Larry set Low ET while winning with an 8.65/154.90, topping Booth's 8.71/154. In early August, the team traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Larry qualified #4 with an 8.64/155.70. An 8.68 in the opening round beat Jim Cook but despite running a strong 8.54 in the semifinal, he lost to Iaconio's even better 8.48. More problems for the team came at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. Lombardo had set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1. But in the first round, the car broke a lifter, and Larry lost to Larry Sengstack. The so-called "straw that broke the camel's back" came at Indy during the running of the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Larry qualified #6 for the race with an 8.67/157.61. He beat Satmary in round one, and in round two, he got a bit of "revenge" over Iaconio by beating him with an 8.67 that stopped Frank's quicker 8.66. A so-so 8.70/153.84 got the better of Mark Yuill at 8.82/157 in the semifinal. The problem was, Glidden had just won his semifinal race with an 8.58. Every run Bob had made in eliminations was between 8.56 and 8.58. That had to be weighing in heavily on Lombardo going into the final. He needed to somehow pick up over a tenth to win. So he gambled on the tree and lost. He ran 8.61/154.63 while Glidden got the victory with his slowest pass of the day, an 8.61/143. But the action didn't end there, unfortunately. Jenkins and Lombardo exchanged heated words, and as a result, Larry was fired from driving the car. AKA the Lotus Car with ladder bar suspension. |
