Notes: Waterman motor. This was Russell's first ride. He was a crewman for Don Schumacher before this. A 6.52 qualified #12 at the AHRA Winternationals on January 27. He shut off to a 9.45 in the first round, losing to Billy Meyer's 6.48/211. He was the sixth alternate at NHRA Pomona (times unknown). At Bakersfield on March 3, he qualified #7. The car was booked in for a best-of-three FC match against Billy Meyer at U.S. 30, Gary, Indiana, for April 21. The ad proclaimed he had run a best of 6.46/225 with the car. We need confirmation of those times. |

Notes: Dennis Fowler was one of the first to run the new Monza bodies in Funny Car competition. Driver Russell Long had it out in January at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where the team failed to qualify. They also failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, running best times of 6.58/199.11. The car took some time to sort out, but it ran well at an eight-car show at Irwindale in March. Long drove it to a 6.59/220.04 to beat Gordie Bonin in the first round, and he soloed in round two with a 6.52/219.51. This race had all cars run two rounds, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. As good as his runs were, they were not good enough to make the runoff. Sundance was one of the cars chosen to run on the Coca-Cola Cavalcade tour. At the Englishtown Cavalcade race, Long's 7.23/179.28 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 6.97/211 in the first round. In July, Atco held a Cavalcade race, and Russell's troubled 9.17 lost to Bourgeois' 7.20/221 in the opening round. Portland held its big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships, and all the members of the Coke Cavalcade drivers raced there. The format was three rounds, and then the two lowest ET cars met in the final. Russell ran 6.52/217.39 in his first race to beat Richard Rogers' 6.98/203, but after that, the car broke, and he could not make any more runs. He followed the Northwest swing to Edmonton, Alberta, for the Funny Car Spectacular event. In the first round of racing, his 6.95/182 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.56/200 in the "Blue Max." A 6.96/142 got him a win in round two when Roger Lindamood shut off early, and in the last round, he ran an easy solo when Al Bergler's Mustang II broke. The following week found the "Sundance" team in Seattle for the Seafair Funny Car Championships. It was another 32-car show with the two Low ET cars going to the final. In Russell's first race, the car got completely sideways, and he shut off to a 10.86 loss against Fred Goeske's 7.03. An off-pace 7.39 lost to Mike Miller's 6.48 in the "Green Elephant" in his second race, and the track's 11:00 pm curfew kept him from making a third run. On the Cavalcade tour, Fremont held a Coke race that had Long run 6.60/191.48 over Gordon Mineo and 6.80/194 over Paul Radici to reach the finals. There, he went up against Gary Bolger, driving the "Tyrant" Mustang of Dale Creasy. Unfortunately, Long crossed the centerline and had to lift while Gary picked up the victory with a 6.60. It should be noted that while the car wasn't consistent, it did show signs of strength with occasional 6.50s, which were very good for the time. At OCIR's Anniversary race, Russell lasted until the second round before losing to eventual winner Jake Johnston in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Vega. His second NHRA national event of the year was the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle, and he qualified #11 with a 6.639/215.31. He got out of shape in the first round and lost to Tom McEwen. At OCIR's East-West Championships, Russell beat Don Prudhomme in his first race with a 6.74/212.26, but his engine blew on the line against McEwen in his second race. More problems came for the team at Irwindale's 32-car show in October. Long broke in the first round, giving Tom Prock a solo. The team was a DNQ at the NHRA World Finals in Ontario (times not available). Dennis was from Alaska, but he housed the car in Phoenix. | I distinctly remember Russell and this car being credited with a 6.30/230 early in the 1975 season. We talked about it when he raced at the Thompson, Ohio, Coke Cavalcade race (which he lost in the final to Gordon Mineo). The team was cool, allowing my then 10-year-old brother Tim to polish the car. Who can validate my old memory? - BP |

Notes: Russell was runner-up to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham on April 4. He beat Ray Sherman in the semifinals with a 6.84/208.33, but his final round 6.90/197.80 lost to the "Max's" 6.38/226. At the next IHRA event, the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo on May 2, he repeated that finish. Even the victor was the same as Beadle's 6.36/216 beat Russell's 6.82/164.80. Earlier, Long ran 7.14 and 6.81 to reach the final. Sacramento held a Funny Car race, and Long picked up the victory there. His final round 6.31/221 beat Dave Condit's 6.37/221 in the "L. A. Hooker." The team also competed at the IHRA Dixie Nationals in Atlanta, but Russell lost early there. At the end of July, the team was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. All the cars made two runs, and Russell ran 6.58 and 6.71. | We need to confirm that Russell ran 6.18/237 this year (or is that a mistaken duplication of Ron Colson's similar numbers?) |

Notes: Paul was at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #4 for the sixteen-car field and beat Don Powell in the opening round. In the second round, his 6.21/207.79 defeated Pat Dakin's 6.41/216, but the run cost him an engine, and he was unable to return for his semifinal race against Jim Walther. He also competed at the IHRA Northern Nationals held on May 20. An easy 7.55 advanced in round one when Gary Dye fouled. In the second round, Paul's 6.70 beat Jack Mitchell. Unfortunately, he lost to Marvin Schwartz in the semifinal. Shortly after that, he was at Beech Bend for its Memorial Championships. His 6.4/223.32 fell to eventual winner Charlie Moulder's 6.35/223 in the first round. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He reached the final at the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Tri-City. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, he advanced when Walther fouled against him. Dick Lahaie also fouled against him in the semifinal, and Longenecker's 6.76 won over Dick's 6.63. He faced Jon Hansen in the final, and this time, it was Paul's turn to foul. He shut down to 6.70/151.00 in a runner-up finish to Jon's 6.55/224. The PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, had 40 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen car show. Paul's 6.34 qualified #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jim Bucher. The race did not go good for Paul as the car went into a wheelstand that just kept climbing high and higher until it went over. The car was destroyed. Chassis builder Mark Williams had done a good job as Paul was able to walk away from the crash. It didn't take him long before he had a new car in time for Indy on September 3 for the NHRA U.S. Nationals.Unfortunately, he failed to qualify at 6.40/221.13. Even with the 32 spots available, 85 cars attempted to make the field. The following week (September 8), he was back at Beech Bend for the final NHRA Division 3 race. He had more problems there as he was unable to break into the eight-car field's 6.59 "bump." |

Notes: Confirmed 6.02/230.76 from IHRA Bristol 1976 and 6.04/234.98 at Beeline Dragway Phoenix Winter Classic. | Paul started the '76 season by qualifying #1 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.03/229.00. The times held for Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. His 6.24/222.77 beat Dwight Salisbury, who smoked the tires in the first round. Another 6.24 at only 207.85 beat a tire-smoking Junior Kaiser in round two. In the semis, a 6.34/212.76 topped Bob Struksnes, who also lit up the tires. In the final, he faced the number two qualifier, Frank Bradley. In the final, Paul ran 6.31/224.43 but lost to Bradley's 6.15/222. Frank had Paul's number at the NHRA Winternationals, too, as Frank put him on the trailer in round two. The same thing happened at the Gatornationals. Paul qualified #3 with a 6.03/241.93, and in the first round, his 6.44/208.81 advanced over a tire-smoking Pat Dakin. But guess what? In round two, Bradley's 6.10/217 beat a tire-smoking Longenecker. He went to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals, where he made it into the semifinals before his 6.39/212.26 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.10/235. On April 11, he was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. Paul set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.97 over Dale Wilch. He lost to John Wiebe in the semifinal. Paul got another runner-up finish at the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo. In the first round, he ran a 6.25/219.61 that beat Tharp's quicker 6.18/231. He had an easy run in the semifinal and then faced Don Garlits for the money. Garlits' 6.11/231 beat his off pace 6.64/173.20 for the title. He repeated his finish at the next IHRA event, the Dixie Nationals at Atlanta, right down to losing to Garlits again in the final. This time his 6.28 lost to Don's 6.17/233. In June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals and qualified way down the list in the #13 spot. He lost a motor while winning his first-round race with a 6.22/216 that beat Kaiser. In round two, he lost to the eventual winner Shirley Muldowney, with his 6.51/180.72 falling to her 6.03/240. Paul ran well at the IHRA Springnationals but failed to make the finals. He won the WCS race at Maple Grove. Paul qualified #1 with a 6.02 (Low ET) at 231.36. He beat Bob Edwards and Larry Bucher before dropping Don Durbin in the final. In July, he made the trek to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, he qualified #9, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tharp. In that race, Tharp's 6.04/234 beat Paul's quicker 6.03/235.22. The following week (July 18), he took another WCS win. It came at the NHRA Division 2 race at Suffolk. He was really running well, beating Grant Stoms in the first round, with a 6.08/218, and in the semifinals, his 6.00 (Low ET) at 230 beat Tharp. He faced old pro Clayton Harris for the money, and Paul's 6.11 got him the victory over Harris' 6.27. The best NHRA times were 5.942 at Pomona and 241.93 at Gainesville. Formerly listed 5.905. Removing until we get confirmation. |
