Notes: Lovelean got the nickname "Farmer Jones" because of his bib overall attire. On Oct. 6 at Caddo Mills he won the A/G class with a speed of 109.22 mph. After making a respectable showing at the U.S. Nationals at Oklahoma City, speed shop owner Lovelean towed his car 1700 miles with his wife and two dogs to California. He qualified second in the A/G class during time trials with 108.43 mph. He was hoping to revenge his loss to Les Ritchey at the Nationals. Ritchey had turned 111 mph to Lovelean's 110 mph. At the Central California Drag Championships at Madera on Nov. 10-11, he turned 110.42 mph during time trials. Unfortunately, Ritchey did not come to Madera. Nonetheless, Lovelean won the A/G class with a speed of 112.26 mph. During record runs, he set a track record of 114.10 mph, which he backed up with 114.64 mph at 12.21. Notes: Dean was still in high school when, with the help of his dad, he built his street roadster. His dad had friends who helped, including Frank Kurtis, Vic Edelbrock, Harry Weber, Don Nicholson, Ak Miller, and Jack Lufkin. His dad knew people! At the beginning of the season, he began with a 265ci Chevy motor, but after a few months of mediocre performance, he switched to a 283ci Chevy. He ran in A/SR in the early part of the season with the 265ci motor. He debuted the car at an event at Taft. Then, at Pomona, he took an A/SR win with 13.77 at 98.46 mph on Jan. 15. Two weeks later, he improved with a class win in A/SR with 13.66 at 100.66 mph at Fontana on Jan. 29. He switched to B/SR by the end of the season. At Riverside on Nov. 5, he ran 121.96 mph. In the 1961 season, he began with a 265ci Chevy motor, but after a few months of mediocre performance, he switched to a 283ci Chevy. In prepping for the '62 Winternationals, he swapped out the carb setup for a '57 Corvette fuel injection unit. Don Nicholson advised young Lowe how to drive the car to get the lowest ET possible. It worked. Not only did Lowe win the B/SR class, but he set both ends of the national record. Dean recalled, "I was the happiest kid in school Monday morning. My roadster had won a class at the Winter Nationals, set a new class record, and lost to a car already becoming a legend [Doug Cook in the Stone-Woods-Cook B/GS Willys in a round of street eliminator]".
