Notes: The Ford SOHC motor was now at a stage where it was becoming a collector's piece more than a race car engine. But a few continued to run it in drag racing. Phil was one of them. The engine could perform. He was at Irwindale in January for the Grand Premiere race. His 7.08 qualified #10, but his 7.18/191 fell to eventual winner Don Enriquez's 6.77/193 in round one. Early in June, Lukens was at Fremont for a sixteen-car show. He beat Jeff Good in the opening round with a 6.92/201, but in the second round, his 6.89/201 lost to Derry O'Donovan's 6.72/203. At the OCIR PDA Championships, Lukens ran 6.91 to qualify #4. He ran Low ET of the first round with a 6.90 to advance, and in round two, he again had Low ET of the round with a 6.85 to beat Chuck Beal. This was at a race that had some big names in the field, such as Billy Williams, Jim Scott, and Walt Rhoades, to name a few. Notes: Keith Martin lived in LA. He was from Norman, Oklahoma. His cars were "Shyster" because he was a full-time lawyer with only spare time on hand. He typically built one engine to go and one gutted engine for show. His driver had to use the one engine for the whole season because the other engine was not really a spare engine, having had no pistons, cam, valves, etc. He built the transport trailer in his garage. The spare engine sat in the trailer to make it look like he had a spare engine for the competition. The others he was running against could sometimes afford two or three engines for the weekend, while his engine had to last the whole season. During the off-season, he would build up a new motor, which had to be used throughout the next season without any major repairs. He quit driving himself because he was 6 feet 6 inches and weighed over 300 pounds. He just built the cars and, when he could, would attend the races to tune up the engine and do minor repairs. His daughter, Kathy, would tag along. She still has a Smokey and the Bandit Firebird with a shaker hood in her garage, gathering dust. Considering the low budget and part-time effort, he did quite well against the full-time professionals. He built a few engines for other people, including some in NASCAR.
