Notes: M.A. Madden, the owner of Madden Poultry Company of Anniston, Alabama, built Willys gassers, all of which he named "Chicken Picker." His second, a locally competitive small-block Chevy-powered B/G car in the mid-1960s, had been a '40 Willys coupe that he called "Chicken Picker II." His third Willys gasser, he first called "Chicken Picker II," again ran in B/G and C/G in 1967. It was a unique '38 Willys 4-door sedan with a '40 Willys front end. In 1968, he freshened it up with a new paint job and a new name (sort of) called "The Chicken Picker." By this time, his son, Bill, was 18 years old and chomping at the bits to drive his dad's car. Right out of the gate, he was good at it-setting an elapsed time national record in D/G twice in one month. Notes: Madden was at Cayuga in the first week of May for the NHRA Division 1 race. His 6.51/222.65 qualified #6. He upset Arnie Karp in the first round when his 6.41/219.33 beat Karp's quicker 6.32/214. In the semi-final, he and Len Capone ran 6.26 (Frank at 222.05), but he was quick off the line and picked up the win light. In the final, he faced low qualifier, Bob Newberry. Frank hoped for another good light, but he pushed the tree too hard and fouled away a 6.39/224.15. Even then, he would have been hard-pressed to outrun Newberry's 6.25/202. Frank lost the NHRA Sanair second round to Bob Elliot after beating Arnie Karp in the first round. Frank qualified #1 at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with a 6.02/230.82. Notes: Frank qualified #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.03/232.13. An opening round 6.30/228.54 beat Jody Austin's 6.38/213, but he had some problems in round two. He had beaten Dick Bell in their race, but his car failed fuel check. Frank’s fuel tank was contaminated with water. He was disqualified and Bell was reinstated. Madden figured that the only way that water could have got into the tank was when they were pulling it into the staging lanes. They were late getting to the line so they drove through a puddle a little faster than they normally would have and he thought that maybe the water entered through the breather tube.

Notes: Only 19 cars showed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Unfortunately, Frank ended up as the second alternate with a 6.70/181.05 best. Frank was at Englishtown in mid-May for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals. Only 13 cars showed, and his 6.36/227.61 qualified last. Notes: Melvin Arnold Madden (called M.A.), the owner of a poultry processing plant in Anniston, Alabama, built Willys gassers, all of which he named "Chicken Picker." His second car, a locally competitive injected small-block Chevy-powered B/G car in the mid-1960s, had been a '40 Willys coupe that he called "Chicken Picker II." His third Willys gasser, which he first called "Chicken Picker II, " ran in B/G and C/G in 1967. It was a unique '38 Willys 4-door sedan with a '40 Willys front end. In 1968, he would freshen it up with a new paint job and a new name (sort of) called "The Chicken Picker." By then, his son, Bill, was 18 years old and took over driving his dad's car. He turned out to be very good at it, garnering a couple of national records right out of the gate, but in 1967, Dad did the driving.
