Oft-reworked car was then re-christened Swamp Rat 1-B. – RT | Set NHRA national speed record on 9/59 at Dunkirk NY (at 195.63). - SK; Malone's run of 195.633 mph on Sep. 27 at Dunkirk Airport was not recognized as official because he ran too late in the day to back it up, so it was regarded as an unofficial record. He also set an unofficial elapsed time mark at Buckingham Field in Florida on Nov. 22 with an 8.19 clocking. Notes: Malone took the Top Fuel and Top Eliminator trophies and A/FD class win at the '63 AHRA Nationals. - RT | On February 24, 1963, Art Malone beat Tommy Ivo at San Gabriel for the No. 1 spot on Drag News Top 10. He won the West Coast Championships at Fremont in March. He beat Steve Porter in the opening round with an 8.29/187.88. In round two, his 8.02/189.06 defeated Don Garlits. In the final, he faced Chris Karamesines, and Malone took the win with an 8.26/187.10. A little rundown on what Art was using in '63: a 135-inch wheelbase, 1340-lb car using 16" M&H rubber. The engine was a Hilborn-injected .30-over 392 Hemi that used a Crankshaft Company crank. - RH |

Notes: Malone had one of the four FCs at US 30, Gary, Indiana, for a four-car show. The car did not run well. The Mustang got out of shape in his first race, and he shut off against Dean Nicopolis in the "Hemi-Hunter" Camaro. He only made one more run against Roger Lindamood, where he shut down early in a loss to the "Color Me Gone" car. Injected. The car was sold to Drake Viscome. | Malone dropped a best of 3 match race to Gary Dyer on 7/30/67 at Pittsburgh International Dragway.
