Notes: Photo from the 1978 NHRA Gatornationals on Saturday. Later that day, during a qualifying run, Frank Mancuso got out of shape at the hit of the throttle, crossed the center line, and went over the guardrail, coming to rest in the fenced-off photographers' area. No one was hurt, but the car was damaged and didn't run again that weekend. Frank was back at the NHRA Summernationals, but a solid 6.410 (no speed recorded) did not qualify. Frank won the third NHRA Division 1 race held at Budds Creek. A final round 7.11/120.16 beat Ric Deschner's 9.41/96. Shortly after the Summernationals, he went to Maple Grove for the fourth Division 1 race. He had run 6.58/218.44 in the first round, to beat Tom Prock's 6.60/181. Notes: Frank was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 6.255/234.98 ended up as the first alternate.But he got into the field when Tim Grose had problems and was unable to run in eliminations. He got to make an easy 7.097/133.33 solo when Paul Smith failed to show in round one but lost to Kenny Bernstein in the second round, 5.97/241 to 6.602/218.97. That was Frank's only NHRA national event this year. It looks like the Gatornationals in the photo, but Frank did not appear on the DNQ list there.

Notes: Frank was the second alternate at NHRA Gainesville with his best times of the year, 6.098/237.46. He qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.150/222.77. In the opening round of eliminations, he got crossed up and shut off to 8.52/88.06, which lost to Mark Oswald's 6.19/240. Frank ran 6.335 at Sanair for the sixth alternate slot.
