Notes: AKA Matawan Missile. Photo from the 1977 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida, where Frank ran 6.92. Frank was at York US 30 on April 30 for its Seventh Annual Funny Car Nationals. Sixteen cars ran the first-round, with the Low ET moving into round two. From there, the two Low ET cars ran in the final. Manzo set Low ET in his second race with 7.08/201.34 to move into the final. There he faced Glen Lazzar, who had run 7.09 to reach the final. But the final wasn't good for Frank as he had trouble and shut off to 13.62/61 while Lazzar ran 7.16/191 to win.

Notes: Frank was the number one qualifier at the NHRA Summernationals at 6.625/211.76 and also ran 6.568/209.78 and 6.704 at NHRA Englishtown. He ran 6.63 to set a new track record at Maple Grove in early August. Frank was runner-up to Steve Group at PHR Championships in August with an off-pace 7.37/133.92. He won NHRA Brainerd. Manzo qualified #1 at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with a 6.46. Frank set a national record at 6.55 this year after the former record expired (which NHRA did with Sportsman records).

Notes: Manzo debuted his new Bob Jinkens-built Firebird Trans Am at Englishtown on April 14 for the Spring Funny Car Bonanza race. It was an eight-car show, and the new car performed well, setting Low ET at 6.65 before breaking while winning his semifinal race over Dennis Bedrosian. The following week (April 21), he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.54/214.59 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round and shut off to a 7.57 loss to Terry Mullins, who advanced with a 6.75. He almost won the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 5. There Manzo had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.43/220.31. He made his way to the final by running 6.62/218.18 over Dick Bell in round one, while a 6.55/218.97 beat a fouling Carol Burkett in the semifinals. His final-round opponent was Bob Newberry. The two put on a great race, but Bob's 6.49/216 got the victory over Frank's 6.53/217.64 runner-up effort. He then went to Maple Grove for the Spring Funny Car Nationals. The race was run with all eight cars making a run against each other, with the four lowest ETs advancing to the semifinals. Manzo's 6.41 at a track record 218.97 was the quickest of the eight. He ran the identical numbers in his semifinal race over Pat Walsh and then went on to win by running 6.37 (Low ET) at another new track speed record of 219.51. He then went to Atco for a best of three match race against Newberry. It wasn't his day as in the first race, his 6.68/215.82 lost to Bob's 6.60/214, and in the second race, he smoked the tires to a 6.94/187.11 that lost the race and the match to Newberry's 6.73. On June 2, Manzo went to Beech Bend Raceway for the NHRA Sportsnationals. A 6.47/217.70 qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field. But Frank was unable to run in eliminations and was replaced in the field by first alternate Pat Austin. | At the NHRA Molson Grandnational in Sanair Frank qualified #3 for the 8 car field with a 6.343/226.70. In round 1 he faced #7 qualifier Arnie Karp & Manzo ran 6.444/221.02 to Karp's losing 6.587/211.96. In the Semis, "Ace" ran #1 Qualifier Bob Newberry, Manzo ran 6.426/222 in his losing effort to the eventual winner Newberry's 6.338/221.45. At the next NHRA National Event, the Budweiser Summernationals at Englishtown, Manzo qualified #2 for the 16-car field with a 6.328/221.89. He would defeat #10 qualfier Carl Ruth in round 1 6.365/221.13 to Ruth's losing 6.63/212.76. #6 qualifier John Samolyk in Round 2 with a 6.504/216.45 & #4 Qualifier Carol Henson in the Semis with a 6.518/216.03 to Henson's losing 6.685/215.31. In the final, Once again he would Face Bob Newberry the #3 qualifier. Manzo would win the event with a 6.417/217.91 to Newberry's 6.478/216.03 but was overshadowed by Newberry's car becoming a blazing inferno in the shutdown. | He was the second alternate at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with a 6.50/215.82 best. Frank won the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. It wasn't apparent that he would win when he qualified last in the eight-car field with a 6.39/220. He advanced past the first round with a 6.75 when Arnie Karp crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, he stepped up to a 6.34/221.56 over Gary Cellone's 6.41/216. In the final, he won easily with a 6.39/221.13 when final round opponent Vern Moats broke.

Notes: Manzo was a formidable competitor in the alcohol Funny Car ranks. On May 18, he was at Cayuga for the second NHRA Division 1 race. His 6.70/211.26 (Top Speed) qualified #1. Only seven cars had shown for the hoped-for eight-car field. He got the "odd-lot" solo in round one, and ran 6.71/209.79 to advance. Manzo improved to 6.68/210.77 in the semifinal to stop Larry Dobbs' 6.85/203. He faced Bob Newberry in the final, and Bob cut a great light that saw his 6.72/209 hold off Frank's 6.64 (Low ET) at 211.26 runner-up effort. He was at Brainerd on August 17 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. "Ace" qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 6.44/219.51. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.37/218.97 that beat Bret Williamson, and in the semifinals, his 6.40/219.51 beat Vern Moats' 6.56/218. This put Manzo into the final against Arnie Karp, who also ran 6.40 in his semifinal race. The two had a good race, but Karp's 6.38/218 beat Manzo's 6.50/217.39 for the title. Notes: Photo from the 1992 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Frank qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.01/236.46 (Top Speed). He beat Bob Gottschalk in the opening round with a 6.10/236.22, but in the second round, he had severe tire shake against Danny Townsend and shut off to 8.16/113.43. He was at the second NHRA Division 1 race held at Sanair in May. Only three cars showed, and Frank's 6.22/229.24 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He soloed with a 6.29/227.04 and then beat Pete Brozene in the final. He also qualified well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.02/234.49 got the #2 spot in the field, but a 6.14/230.35 in the first round, lost to Todd Paton's 6.13/230.
