Notes: George made his NHRA Pro Stock National debut at Topeka, Kansas, for the NHRA Western Nationals held near the end of June. Thirty-one cars showed up and attempted to qualify. He was the slowest at 7.57/184.31. He followed the tour to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where he was the seventh alternate at 7.79/177.30. Shortly after that (August 1st), George was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 7.38/188.99 was the eighth alternate there. He also failed to qualify at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals, where he was the seventh alternate with a 7.32/188.91 best. He skipped going to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals but made it to Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Marnell was the fifteenth alternate at 7.39/187.14. At the NHRA Keystone Nationals, held at Maple Grove, you could see George climbing the Pro Stock ranks. Although he still didn't qualify (the seventh alternate), his 7.30/188.79 was better than many known cars. Rusty Glidden, Don Campanello, Jerry Haas, and Harry Scribner, among others, were behind him on the qualifying list. At the NHRA Heartland Nationals, he ran a career-best (to this point),7.23/190.55. At this point, he had to be wondering, "what do you gotta do!!" But this field was tough, as that was only the seventh alternate. He was the twelfth alternate at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Chief Nationals with a 7.35/187.26. He ended his season by getting even closer to his goal at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals. His 7.23/190.31 was the third alternate for the show. His best times were at the Pomona Finals and Topeka at 7.234/190.55. |

Notes: Marnell started his season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.06/196.12. In the first round, his 7.08/195.65 lost to Ray Franks' 7.04/195. He failed to qualify at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 7.10/194.97 was the first alternate. He took a step backward at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There he was the eleventh alternate with a 7.12/196.20 best. Marnell got back into the show at Houston, where his 7.05/195.86 qualified #11 for the NHRA Supernationals (Slick 50 Nats?). After that, things went bad. He faced eventual winner Mike Edwards in the opening round, and Marnell crashed. The car started getting out of shape at about the 1,000-foot mark; he pulled the parachute, hoping that it would straighten the car out. The car ended up flipping and sliding through the lights on its roof. He was ok, not so much so for the car. His time on the run was a 7.13/175.30. Don Ness repaired the Cutlass in time for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. He ran 7.11 twice during qualifying with a best speed of 194.38, but it wasn't enough (fourth alternate) to crack the 7.09 "bump." The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Virginia Nationals held at Richmond. George's 7.11/194.76 best was the ninth alternate. He also failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he was the sixth alternate at 7.17/192.88. George was in Seattle in August for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. During qualifying, he ran 7.02 and a career-best (to this point) 7.012 to qualify #3. Another 7.02/196.50 beat Mark Osborne's 7.07/194 in round one, but he fouled away a 7.05/195.39 in round two against Kurt Johnson, who advanced with a 7.02/195. The following week (Aug. 18), he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. There, his 7.13/193.75 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he fouled again in the first round, where he wasted a 7.13/193.25 while his opponent, Steve Schmidt, advanced at 7.16/192. George set Top Speed at Seattle at 196.80. His best NHRA times were 7.010 at Ennis and 197.88 at the World Finals. |

Notes: Ed and Jack Maroney ran a 148" front engine dragster. The car was campaigned as a team car to Fred Rathbun and Jerry Forbes. These cars were known as the "Merrymen of Arizona." The car had a four cylinder Pontiac with a 4.71 blower on 30% Nitro. A Model B ford 3 speed with a Lakewood can transferred power to an Olds rear. The car ran in the 9-second range while using the clutch to shift. One of the last races in this car was Comp Eliminator at the 1972 AHRA Winternationals, Beeline Dragway in Phoenix. - MaroneyRacing.com |

Notes: 1973 - Short funny car ran as fuel altered. The brothers teamed with Mike Day and built a Vega Panel wagon funny car. The car was lettered with Maroney Bros. And Day, and Blind Faith on the front spoiler. The body was out of the same mold that Don Schumacher campaigned as the Wonder Bread car. This car had the drive train from Mike's Fiat. A 326 cu in Small block Chevy, injected on 95% Nitro. A Crower Glide, 2-speed Lenco and 9" rear got the power down. The car was very lightweight at 1400 lbs wet. 110" wheelbase with a torsion front end made the car fun to drive. The team held the AHRA record in B/FA at 8.26 with this combination. - MaroneyRacing.com |
