Notes: Tony debuted at Houston in October 1988. He qualified at the Supernationals with a 5.535/253.02 but lost to Mike Dunn in round one, 5.59/241 to 5.818/166.82. That was his only NHRA national event in 1988, but he had a successful 1989 season. Tony died in a car crash a couple of years later. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Tony had a great NHRA season, qualifying nearly everywhere and running some stout numbers. He drove a Thunderbird through Columbus, where a blower explosion destroyed that body. Was the Daytona just a new body? Notes: Tony qualified #16 at Pomona at 5.529/252.45. In round one, he lost to John Martin, 5.63/260 to a 9.397/86.08 shutoff. He qualified #14 at Houston at 5.690/213.77 but lost to Scott Kalitta in round one, 5.41/277 to 5.727/218.12. Tony qualified #14 at the Gatornatioanls with a 5.518/252.17. In round one, he lost to Kenny Bernstein, 5.39/269 to 5.585/212.21. He was still driving the T-Bird at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 5.617/257.65 qualified #13. In the first round, he lost to eventual winner Mike Dunn in a great race, 5.461/263.69 to 5.482/260.71. He also qualified the car at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, where a 5.493/252.38 was #11. In the opening round, he beat a tire-smoking Bruce Larson at 5.618/240.19, but in round two, his 5.606/250.13 fell to Ed McCulloch's 5.55/273. Shortly after that (May 21), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, which was pretty good considering that 21 cars were attempting to make the field. He started his day by running 5.76/247.71 over Jim White's 6.33/181 tire-smoker. That was followed by a 5.71/253.53 over Tim Grose's 5.78/237 in the semi-final. He was supposed to race Scott Kalitta in the final, but Kalitta had just blown his third engine of the weekend and decided that enough was enough, and he failed to show for the final. Tony made a 5.74/247.51 solo pass for the victory. He qualified at the Cajun Nats with a 5.620/260.42 for the #13 slot. In the first round, his off pace 6.312/164.23 lost to Bruce Larson's 5.46/261. The final race for the T-Bird came at Columbus in June for the NHRA Springnationals. He had run 5.558/259.14 in qualifying and came back out to better his position in the field. The car's supercharger exploded, and the body was destroyed. His earlier time held for the #15 spot in the field, but White took his place in the show due to the damage. Tony raced at NHRA Englishtown and went 5.429/243.27 for the #9 position but fouled against Don Prudhomme in round one, losing a 5.32/272 to 5.844/201.52 decision. We are assuming that was the new Daytona. He definitely was in the Daytona at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals at the end of July.

Notes: Hart's potent Chrysler engine helped McCandless to numerous victories in the Stripped Coupe O.H. class at Santa Ana in '56. On Jan. 22, he won the class with a track record speed of 119.47 mph. On Feb. 5, he took another class win with another track record speed of 123.64 mph. A week later, he set another track record and class win with 124.84 mph. On Feb. 26, he took a class win with 120.48 mph. At San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip, he took a win in the B Altered coupe-sedan class with 109.89 mph. On June 24, he was back at Santa Ana for another win with 118.42 mph. Notes: Hart primarily ran this potent coupe at Santa Ana during the 1957 season. On Jan. 6, they won the Strip Coupe, O.H. class and took the trophy for the meet's top speed with 129.36 mph. They took top eliminator honors on Jan. 27, but rain-soaked timing equipment kept racers from learning their times. When Santa Ana joined the fuel ban and ran gas-only races, Hart had to conform and run gas instead of fuel. He won the Strip Coupe, O.H. class, running on gas, with 126.20 mph which was the top speed of the meet on Mar. 17. He was barely nosed out by Rice Auto's Merc-powered A/D in top eliminator. In a losing effort he turned 11.2 at 126.06 mph, while Rice Auto ran 124.00 mph to win. At the big meet at Santa Ana on Mar. 24, they ran, but were beaten during the races by Bader & Ferreira and had to bow out. On May 5, he won the Modified Coupe class with 127.62 mph. He then faced the Hess and Winslow B/R for the top eliminator final. Hart took the win with 124.50 mph. In an earlier elimination run, Hart beat the Walker & Rurup A/D with 122.05 mph. Notes: Charles McCandless and Jack Hart ran this radical Bantam-bodied competition coupe with Doug Hartelt's Potvin-equipped blown Chrysler. The team had previously run both a Willys coupe and a '32 5-window coupe but switched to this lighter car for the NHRA '57 Nationals. At the Drag Racers, Inc. Gas Invitational Championships on Oct. 27, McCandless took top eliminator honors, but not without challenges. He took a class win in Modified Coupe with 11.57 at 121.46 mph. In the final round of top eliminator, he faced Jim Nelson in the Masters Dragliner, which had already notched the meet's top speed with 132.11 mph. Most thought the Dragliner would win easily, but when the flagman started the race, the dragster remained at the starting line while McCandless left him in the dust. Upon returning to the starting line, McCandless, in a show of good sportsmanship, said he was amenable to giving Nelson a second shot. The second run was identical, with McCandless making a good run and Nelson still sitting on the starting line. McCandless was the top eliminator. Notes: On Jan. 6 at Santa Ana, McCandless won the Stripped Coupe OH class and took the meet's top time with 129.36 mph. He was beaten for Top Eliminator honors by Bobby Sir Kegian riding his Vincent fuel bike. The Jan. 27 race at Santa Ana was beset by terrible weather conditions with intermittent rain and, at one point, even a smattering of snow. Because of the soggy conditions, no time was recorded for McCandless's top eliminator victory. He took a win in the Strip Fuel Coupe class. There were conflicting reports about what engine he was running: Drag News reported he ran a blown Olds motor, while the Santa Ana Register said it was a blown Chrysler.
